Senior Pipeline Tidings...

Open Activities

By: Maurine LeCocq, Senior Center Journalist I recently had the privilege of visiting with a group of ladies who meet every Wednesday at the Senior Center to make Caring Covers. Some of these ladies are knitters, some crochet. Their goal is to make something for others to let that person know someone cares about them during a time of stress, illness, concern, sadness, etc. They don’t just volunteer their time here at the Senior Center, they take their projects home and spend additional hours in order to complete their project. The ladies of Caring Covers make three different styles of prayer shawls; triangular, oblong, and rectangular. They also make baby covers, afghans, and hats. The projects they were working on the day I visited, were all different, yet each was incredibly beautiful. I could see that a lot of love and care was going into each one. Several of these ladies have been knitting or crocheting for 40-50 years. Others are new to the craft. Rhonda Tackett, Peggy Johnson, and Roxanne Granlund are left handed and have to transpose patterns they intend to make. I didn’t know that patterns are all printed right handed. Rhonda and Roxanne use the European method of crocheting which requires less wrist action. Barbara Johnson showed me the Caring Covers supply room. Let me tell you, these ladies have been very busy. They have several tubs of completed projects to draw upon when a need

arises. Best of all are the plastic containers they have organized by color and type of yarns that have been donated to the Senior Center. Any time you are cleaning out your yarn at home, and wonder what to do with that extra yarn, bring it to the Senior Center. You can be assured it will be used for a worthwhile project for others. Since February 2012 these ladies have given out 39 Caring Covers. Each cover is hand delivered in a custom sewn bag designed and made by Carolyn St. Clair. Jane Stiles helps out with delivering the Caring Covers when needed. Rachael Jackson, Barbara Johnson, and Shirley Fink were the organizers of this group and it hasn’t taken long for others to find their home with these wonderful ladies. Carolyn Campbell recently joined them and is very excited to be a part of this group. As one of the ladies said, “It’s a hug to whoever receives one of these.” If there is someone at the Senior Center who you think might need a prayer shawl, or one of the other items these ladies make, please give that information to a staff member and they will pass it on to the ladies making the Caring Covers. Kudos to volunteers Carolyn Campbell, Shirley Fink, Roxanne Granlund, Rachael Jackson, Barbara Johnson, Peggy Johnson, Carolyn St. Clair, Jane Stiles and Rhonda Tackett for the gifts they provide to our Senior Center Family during a special time of need.

MEMBERSHIP at the Senior Center is required and is open to Seniors ages 55 & over.
