THE COGSWELL EXPERIENCE is truly extraordinary. We dig deep into the creative process. Our students are given a rare hands-on approach to the practices demanded by today’s creative industries. They are given the support they need to innovate, connect, and make things happen. They can walk into chaos and create order. They can take a conventional idea and create a remarkable one. At Cogswell, we realize the best ideas start with a sketch.

MEET A COUPLE OF COGSWELL ALUMNI WHO ARE NOW AT WORK DOING WHAT THEY LOVE KATIE FORTUNE
DIGITAL ARTS & ANIMATION ENTERTAINMENT DESIGN
“Working with people is a really good learning experience,” said Katie Fortune (class of ’15). “Before coming to Cogswell, I really hadn’t worked with a team before. Now, I really like seeing how the other members of my team do what they do. I’m learning from them as well as working with them.”
Katie was hired as a 2D artist at MZ, which produces such hits as Game of War, Mobile Strike and Final Fantasy XV. She says she loves working in games and making things that inspire others while working with people who inspire her as well.
Katie always loved to draw, and her desire to become an artist attracted her to Cogswell after high school. She particularly enjoyed developing concept art. “One assignment was to draw a steam-powered transportation device. I drew a couple of sketches and was really fond of the creepy crab-chair kind of thing I came up with.” While at Cogswell, Katie was asked to provide art direction and was recruited onto project teams. This opened her eyes to the skills of her peers as well as the processes used to build large-scale projects. She says, “Sometimes, they will ask me about my artistic opinion on things. I am always honored when they do.”

COMPUTER SCIENCE SOFTWARE ENGINEERING Bakari was working as a high school physics teacher when a representative came to his school and spoke to his class about Cogswell. He decided to enroll and pursue a second career. “I have always loved video games, and the thought of making games was more powerful than just playing them.” After spending a summer working at Sony PlayStation as an intern, he was hired as a developer support engineer.
Bakari is now a Software Engineer at Roblox—a massive, multiplayer online game creation platform where users can play and design their own games.
The internship experience revealed to Bakari the value of becoming a full-stack developer, capable of building back-end engines and connections as well as user experiences. He finished his Cogswell degree in Software Engineering which included a demonstration of physics working under dynamic “bouncy balls” artwork.
Have a look at how Bakari describes his experience at Cogswell, working on teams and developing the skills needed to launch his career.
