yourtown KATIE TAYLOR CONFERRED WITH FREEDOM OF COUNTY WICKLOW World champion boxer and Bray native, Katie Taylor, was conferred with the Freedom of County Wicklow by Wicklow County Council today in recognition of her outstanding sporting achievements. Katie, who was conferred with the honour at a special ceremony in Wicklow County Campus in Clermont College, Rathnew, was only the second recipient of this unique honour: Oscar-winning actor and Wicklow resident, Daniel Day-Lewis, was the first in 2009. Katie has proved herself to be a wonderful ambassador for Ireland in the field of sport and everyone in County Wicklow is immensely proud of her remarkable achievements. As a memento of the occasion, Katie Taylor was presented with a piece of art, entitled the Sun Disc, specially commissioned by Wicklow County Council from local artist Brian Hackett. The Sun Disc created by Brian Hackett is made of sterling silver and is based on a Bronze Age pin. The disc may have been used as a tool for navigation, measuring time or event astronomy. Using a lode stone to find North, by counting the rings on the edge of the disc it was possible to give directions and navigate safely.

2011 GENERAL ELECTION, WICKLOW
WICKLOW IS MULTIPLE AWARD WINNER AT INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT COMPETITION County Wicklow scored two major victories in the international Liveable Communities (LivCom) awards that were presented recently in Chicago, USA. This is the second time that entries from Wicklow have won awards in this very prestigious competition that attracts entries from all over the world. A gold medal award was presented to Wicklow together with the town of Norwich (United Kingdom) in the category for cities and counties with a population ranging from 75,000 to 150,000. The submission from County Wicklow had to meet a stringent set of criteria that included aspects such as: Enhancement of the Natural and Built Landscapes, Environmental Best Practices and Community Participation and Empowerment. In addition, a silver medal was also won in the Natural Category by the East Coast Nature Reserve in Newcastle for work there by Birdwatch Ireland in reclaiming land and restoring the fen. Endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme, the LivCom awards is the only competition focusing on Best Practice in the management of the local environment. The objective of the competition is to improve the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of “liveable communities”. Representing Wicklow at the awards ceremony in Chicago were Cathaoirleach, Cllr Tom Fortune; Cllr George Jones and Ms Grainne McLoughlin – a former Greystones Town Councillor. County Wicklow was previously successful in the LivCom Awards in 2008 when Greystones won the international Liveable Communities Award in the under 20,000 population category.

After much speculation we have now been finally given a date for the next General Election and Friday February 25th next will see the people of Wicklow going to the polls to have their say on the formation of the next Dail. The political landscape in the Garden County has altered dramatically over the past three years and we are in line for an intense election campaign with many new faces putting themselves forward for nomination both nationally and in the South East. Fianna Fail endured a disappointing – yet not unexpected – defeat in the most recent local elections and their prospects do not seem much better for the General Election. Candidates declared so far for Wicklow include: Andrew Doyle, Billy Timmins and Simon Harris of Fine Gael. Dick Roche and Pat Fitzgerald of Fianna Fail. Conal Kavanagh (son of former Minister Liam Kavanagh), Tom Fortune and Anne Ferris of Labour. John Brady of Sinn Fein. Independents include Bob Kearns and Stephen Donnelly, while sitting Independent TD Joe Behan is yet to declare. Niall Byrne looks set to be the solitary representative for the Green Party. There are sure to be further names added to the ballot paper though as polling day draws nearer.

ACHIEVE A FITTER, HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER YOU
hile the arrival of a New Year brings hope and a sense of optimism for most of us, it also signals the arrival of the dreaded New Year resolutions. If you’re the kind of person who decides to quit smoking, lose weight or even finally paint the living room on the first of January every year, then you know exactly what we’re talking about. Whatever bad habit it is you’re trying to kick (or good habit you’re aiming to create) New Year resolutions aren’t always the best place to start. Once-a-year plans are the worst laid plans; they’re made in a rush of optimism and usually abandoned within a fortnight. But what about making some New Year resolutions that you can actually stick to? How about setting goals that are not only believable, but actually achievable?
inWICKLOW February 2011
Of all the New Year resolutions that are made, losing weight, getting fit and eating right are the most popular. These top three are quickly followed by reducing stress, quitting smoking, drinking less alcohol and saving money. Further down the must-do list are taking more holidays, getting a better job and volunteering. Life changing resolutions are always difficult to come to terms with, particularly one that takes away what might be one of life’s few pleasures, such as eating sweet treats. When it comes to weight loss, many of us are trapped in a vicious circle of diet-denialbinge that achieves nothing but an increased lack of self-esteem and morale. Most of us look on dieting as a method of depriving one’s self to the point that we’re hanging on until the diet is over, and we can start treating ourselves again.
newyear TOP TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER YOU TAKE A CLASS Whether it’s Pilates, Yoga or Meditation you’re interested in, making a concentrated effort to get off the couch and get out meeting people is a good way to start building a better body image. Not only will you have more energy and a better outlook on life, interaction with new people is always a good thing. EAT FRUIT, VEGETABLES AND WHOLE GRAINS Are you getting your 5-a-day? As well as consuming a healthy amount of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis, you should be tackling couscous, oats, brown rice, bulgur wheat and wholewheat pasta. If you’re unsure of quantities or how to cook unfamiliar foods, buy a cookery book to help you out! Trudie Lawless is an experienced Massage Therapist located in Wicklow Town who provides a personalised service from her dedicated therapy room. EAT LITTLE, AND OFTEN This is a great rule! Reducing the size of food portions and eating at regular intervals mean you never get to the point of ‘hungry’, which can lead you to overeat. Also, eating slowly and recognising when you’re full will give your brain a chance to catch-up, and send a signal to your tummy that you’re ‘full.’ DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS Many adults don’t realise that when we’re ‘thirsty’ we’re actually dehydrated. Rather than wait for your body to recognise that it needs fluids – get them in advance. Adults need to drink at least 1.5 litres of fluids every day and whether it’s plain tap water or the bottled stuff you prefer, water will also give you clear skin and sparkling eyes. GET ACTIVE Whether it’s walking the dog, walking to the school or just walking round the block, always make sure you get twenty minutes of physical activity each day. Don’t wait for the bright evenings, wrap up warm and get in a good walk, starting from today. If you’re planning on power walking, jogging or running, always remember to warm up beforehand and cool down after with some simple stretching exercises. These will introduce the body gently to your new fitness levels without any need for aching muscles the following day.
A healthy attitude and positive planning are key to successful New Year resolutions. Rather than thinking about ‘dieting’ for the foreseeable future, consider each day as it arrives. Think ‘what can I do today’ instead of ‘how will I do this for the rest of the year’. Don’t declare that you’re never eating chocolate again, instead, make chocolate a twice-weekly, well deserved treat, instead of a guilty pleasure. Always combine a healthy eating plan with a light exercise plan. Getting fit isn’t about pounding the pavements first thing in the morning or last thing at night, but rather, is about getting fresh air and stretching your muscles on a regular basis. Quitting smoking is known as one of the hardest goals to achieve but help is at hand. Smokers needn’t feel alone in this difficult task; talk to your doctor, get advice and work on the effort involved, one day at a time.

newyear ARRIBA WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE Congratulations to all the participants in the Wicklow and Greystones Arriba Weight Loss Challenges who lost a staggering 42 stone between them during the twelve week programme from September to December, last. stablished in 2003, Network Fitness Supplies was set up by Greystone’s native Gordon Shaw. Gordon worked as a Manager in many Leisure Club’s including the Glenview Hotel in Co. WHY BUY A HOME GYM?
The quality of home gym equipment has gone up ten-fold over the past 4 years with now features that where only seen on gym quality units now seen on the most basic home models. High quality home equipment means that you get the same results as using a gym. The cost has come down a lot too! When you compare a gym membership over a 5 year period to a piece of home equipment the cost difference is staggering. The membership on average in Wicklow is €400 per annum, totalling €4,000 over a 10 year period. You can now buy a cross trainer & treadmill from €1,000 to €1,800 dependant on the quality. The €1,800 option comes with a lifetime warranty on the motor, 5 years other parts and should last at least 10 years. Network Fitness also offer a everything from a basic fitness program to Personal Training at competitive prices. WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT NETWORK FITNESS SUPPLIES?
In late 2010 Network Fitness Supplies launched its new website www.neworkfitness.ie with a clear objective: to provide high quality fitness equipment available to purchase online at prices that are comparable to UK websites. Network Fitness offers a full showroom available to view our best-selling products. You arrange an appointment in advance and you get to meet the owner Gordon Shaw who has 17 years’ experience working in all areas of the Leisure Industry and not a young staff member as with other suppliers. Gordon will use his experience to find you a piece of equipment that suits your needs. Our products come with Industry leading warranties with some products offering 10 years on parts and lifetime on motors and frames. That’s how good our products are. A lot of companies will allow you deal with the manufacturers that are based in the U.K. and they simply sub-contract service work to a engineer who is based in Ireland. ROMANTIC GIFT IDEAS FOR THAT SPECIAL SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS Traditional and uninspired as it may seem, all females adore being sent flowers – without exception! While it may seem contrived to men, for you to be sitting at your desk at work or occupying children at home only for a delivery of roses to arrive with your name on is one of the nicest feelings in the world. Flowers really do say that you ‘care’. Wicklow has tons of local flower shops selling everything from traditional roses and and lillies, along with teddybears, chocolates and champagne. Add a personal message to a bouquet you know she’ll love and you’re definitely onto a winner.
hether you love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day comes round like clockwork on the 14th February every year and is celebrated by millions of couples around the world, all intent on declaring their love for each other. The ultimate festival for love and romance, Valentine’s Day provides each of us with an opportunity to spend quality time with our loved one, and show them how much we truly care. If you’ve a first date planned for Valentine’s Day be sure to keep the mood positive and the coversation light. Don’t mention ex partners and don’t run through your mental check list of ‘must-haves’ for the person sitting in front of you. Sit back, let the night develop naturally and most of all, try to enjoy yourself. If you’re in a long-term relationship, then Valentine’s night is not the time to talk about worries or issues; leave financial problems, irritations and chat about in-laws or the kids at home, you’re out to concentrate on each other, for one night only. If you’re single on Valentine’s night and not overly happy about it, how about celebrating with a few friends, or taking a parent or sibling out for dinner? ‘Single Parties’ were all the rage last year, and will no doubt get another airing this February. Although Valentine’s Day is usually aimed at budding relationships and couples, there are also cards and mementoes on the market for godparents, grandparents and child minders. Make someone smile this Valentine’s Day, whether they’re loved up or not.
inWICKLOW February 2011
SAY IT IN A LETTER Hallmark may hold the market on Valentine’s Cards, but writing a personalised letter is still cool and if you haven’t already tried it, give it a go! To really impress that special person in your life, visit your local specialist stationer and pick up some beautifully designed paper and envelopes, to demonstrate just how thoughtful you are. Don’t forget to buy an extra special pen while you’re there, this is not the occassion to be writing with any old biro. For extra bonus points, spray a tiny bit of your favourite scent on the letter before posting, your love letter will become something that will be treasured for ever. CANDLE-LIT DINNER Most of us are so stressed out, overworked and underpaid at the moment that it really means something to know that your partner has taken the time out to show exactly how much they care. If you’re not a natural cook, don’t try attempt something that you haven’t done before. Steak, a baked potato and some greens impresses pretty much all of us, but rather than buying from the supermarket, pick up some quality steak from your local butcher, who’ll have plenty of tips on exactly how to cook the meat. Make a trip to your Farmers Market to pick up some seasonal veg too, the difference is in the taste. Light candles all over the house and turn the lights down low for added impact. With just a little effort and careful consideration, you can create a Valentine’s night to remember.
A BOUQUET OF WISHES If you can, fill your partners car with balloons that say exactly how much you care. Even though it’s a bit of a crazy idea, it’s a unique and surprisingly thoughtful gesture for anyone with a little silliness inside. To create a really spectacular effect, go for balloons in your partner’s favourite colours or call into your local balloon shop and see about having a personalised message printed on the balloons don’t forget to take a picture!
BAGS OF SPARKLE Jewelery isn’t always about making a ‘serious’ statement, a tiny bit of sparkle can be lots of fun, too. With shops like Accessorize, Monsoon, River Island and local boutique and jewelery shops offering everything from heart shaped pedants to cute little earrings, it’s easy enough to buy a Valentine’s momento for as little as €20.
TAKE A MINI BREAK Ireland – and Wicklow in particular – is full of amazing country house hotels that are offering fantastic deals for Valentine’s day. Not only can you wine and dine your loved one in the most romantic of settings, but many hotels offer picnic baskets, secluded nature walks and cosy dinners for two, pretty much providing everything and anything a loved-up couple might ask for.

ALL SHADES BLINDS & FURNISHINGS Dressing windows for Wicklow’s discerning customers for over ten years. Situated on Abbey Street, Wicklow, All Shades Blinds & Furnishing are a one-stop-shop for all your blinds, shutters and curtain needs. In business ten years but newly arrived to their eye-catching showrooms since mid-December, All Shades Blinds & Furnishings is owned and managed by Dianna (Armstrong) Sheridan, who also personally carries out their exclusive, free-fitting and measuring service. In Wicklow magazine caught up with Dianna recently to see how her local business is faring in the recession, “We were fairly effected by the snow, same as everyone else,” says Dianna, “however our January sale brought some strong business in and we’re hoping things will pick up now that spring is on its way.” Being a local girl herself from Ashford, Dianna is proud of her company’s
reputation as a specialist blind-maker in Wicklow, and indeed, their new floor space includes a workshop underneath the ground floor. In addition to roller blinds, All Shades Blinds & Furnishings also sell vertical blinds, wooden and aluminum blinds, shutters, ready-made curtains and made-to-measure curtains. Much of Dianna’s business is repeat customers who return, year and again, to avail of the strong customer ethics and good business service offered at All Shades Blinds & Furnishings. In addition to the free fitting and measuring service that is carried out personally by Dianna, there is also

an interior designer available to discuss a customer’s needs and requirements. Dianna explains, “sometimes a customer might be starting from scratch and might be slightly overwhelmed with the decorating job they’ve taken on. We’re delighted to offer an interior design consultation at only 150 which includes visiting your home, and consulting on styles and shades before making the final decision.” With both the workshop and spacious showroom under one roof at the new premises we’ve no doubt that Dianna and All Shades Blinds & Furnishings will be in business for another ten years. Or possibly you’re considering a a party at home, which might involve cooking yourself, engaging the services of a caterer, hiring a bouncy castle, the list is endless! Their Holy Communion is the first time your child will receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the local parish priest will have visited the classroom to
explain what’s involved, and indeed, some classes might practice with wafer. Parents are expected to work alongside the school in order to prepare the child for such an important ceremony – why not have a word with the teacher and see if there’s anything you could help with on the day? When it comes to a the outfit, the list of possibilities is endless. For boys, as an alternative to the more traditional suit, you might be going for a relaxed, casual look. Or you could try casual trousers with a shirt, tie and waistcoat – a look that seems very popular for 2011. EBRUARY OFFERS UP A SPORTING FEAST WITH IRISH INTERNATIONAL TEAMS INVOLVED IN NO FEWER THAN THREE DIFFERENT MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS. THE RUGBY TEAM WILL BE SEEKING TO REGAIN THE SIX NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE LEAD-UP TO THE WORLD CUP IN A BUSY YEAR FOR IRISH RUGBY. THE FOOTBALLERS WILL BE COMPETING IN THE INAUGURAL CARLING NATIONS CUP ALONG WITH SCOTLAND, WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND, WHILE IRELAND’S CRICKETERS WILL BE ENGAGED AT THE WORLD CUP IN ASIA TRYING TO EMULATE THE SUCCESS OF FOUR YEARS AGO. AT CLUB LEVEL THE HEINEKEN CUP IS NEARING THE KNOCK-OUT STAGES, AS IS THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AND PHIL ‘THE POWER’ TAYLOR ATTEMPTS TO DEFEND YET ANOTHER PDC DARTS LEAGUE TITLE. RUGBY UNION – SIX NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP The 2011 RBS Six Nations Championship begins on the evening of Friday, 4th February as Wales entertain the English in the impressive surroundings of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Ireland’s Championship begins the next afternoon with a trip to Italy where they will face the steadily improving Italians. Later that day France will complete the opening fixtures as they host Scotland in Paris. This season’s renewal has been described by many as one of the most open competitions in many years as realistically four teams are in a position to challenge for top spot. In 2010 Ireland headed into the tournament as defending champions having won their first Grand Slam in 61 years in 2009 but the bid was derailed in the Stade de France with a crushing 33-10 defeat. Les Bleus also negotiated tricky trips to Murrayfield and the Millennium Stadium before demolishing Italy 46-20 to set up a Grand Slam decider against England which they just edged 12-10. 2011 will also give the newly developed Aviva Stadium (formerly Lansdowne Road) its first taste of Six Nations action. One should also not forget the fact that 2011 is a World Cup year which will undoubtedly add an extra element of spice to the contests and the performances of certain individuals who will need to prove their worth to their respective coaches. With a fancy new home and a strong squad that includes 2010 RBS Player of the Championship Tommy Bowe, Brian O’Driscoll and the emerging talent of Jonathan Sexton to name but a few there is every reason for Irish rugby fans to be optimistic heading into this year’s Championship.

SPORT FOOTBALL – PREMIER LEAGUE
The race for the Premier League title is becoming tighter as the half-way point in the season has come and past and pretenders begin to fall by the wayside. The city of Manchester continues to lead the way with United and City occupying first and second places. Interestingly, Man United are still on course to go the entire Premier League season without a defeat for the first time in their history. Arsenal have been consistent if not unspectacular and are well in touch in third. Chelsea seem to have come through their significant blip that saw them win just one out of nine league games in the lead-up the Christmas, however, they have significant ground to make up if they are to challenge in the second half of the season. Apart from Man City, who signed striker Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg, none of the big sides have been especially busy during the January transfer window. At the other end of the table the battle for relegation is as wide open as ever. Surprisingly, there are a few of the bigger clubs who find themselves in less than comfortable situations near the bottom of the table. Both Aston Villa and Liverpool have been treading rather closer than they would like to the relegation zone, whereas less fancied sides such as Newcastle and Blackpool have exceeded expectations and are regularly in the top 10. Villa have spent big money in recent weeks in order to improve their situation under Gerard Houllier and have brought in forward Darren Bent from Sunderland in a massive deal potentially worth £24 million sterling. Bent has a proven

goalscoring record in the top flight and will surely bolster Villa’s strike force considerably. ‘King’ Kenny Dalglish has returned to manage Liverpool and hopes to turn around the club’s fortunes on the pitch following the disaster that was the Hodgson era. With the charisma and experience of Dalglish one would expect Liverpool to pull themselves comfortably into the top half of the league table by the end of the season. FOOTBALL – CHAMPIONS LEAGUE The Champions League has reached the knock-out stages with the round of 16 first leg matches beginning on Tuesday, 15th February. There were no massive shocks in the group stages with all of the major protagonists still remaining in the competition. Despite some poor form under now former manager Rafael Benitez defending champions Inter Milan are still in and will face Bayern Munich for a place in the quarter final stage. This tie is a repeat of last year’s final where the Italians triumphed 2-0. Of the four English sides, Tottenham face Serie A leaders AC Milan, Arsenal play arguably the best club side on the planet right now in Barcelona, Chelsea have a relatively straightforward tie against FC Copenhagen while Manchester United play Marseille. Other big sides remaining include Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid and Italian side Roma. The round of 16 will conclude on Wednesday 16th March. The final will be played on the 28th of May in Wembley Stadium, London.

already qualified for the quarter finals and will now be concentrating on a drawn-out campaign that will see them competing in the latter stages of the competition. GOLF The golf season will be kicking into full gear in the next few weeks in the lead-up to the first major championship of the season, the US Masters in April. World No.1 Lee Westwood is sure to be vying for his first major at the Masters where he came so close last year. He is playing with huge confidence right now though so it would be no surprise to see him have an exceptionally strong year. In other news, the success of the Europeans in the 2010 Ryder Cup is still fresh in our minds but already people are beginning to look forward to the 2012 matches in the USA. In recent weeks both the European and US teams have announced their captains for Medinah in two years time. Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal will lead the Europeans while veteran American Davis Love III will be a popular choice among Americans to spearhead their team.
HORSE RACING Despite massive weather disruption over the festive period most of the major action went ahead, albeit on a rescheduled basis. The Leopardstown Christmas Festival was curtailed by one day to three but was still notable for the performances of high-class horses Hurricane Fly and Pandorama in particular. Following the Irish Champion Hurdle in January Hurricane Fly is now likely to go straight to Cheltenham in March for the Champion Hurdle. Pandorama was an impressive winner of the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown and will return to the track in February for the Hennessy Gold Cup before a possible trip to the Cheltenham Festival. Meanwhile, the rescheduled King George VI Chase at Kempton in January saw Kauto Star bidding for a record-breaking five wins in the race. Unfortunately though Kauto was limited to a third-place finish behind the highly impressive Long Run. On the same card Cheltenham Champion Hurdle winner Binocular turned in a polished performance in the Christmas Hurdle and will certainly be a tough nut to crack at Cheltenham in March.
CRICKET – WORLD CUP The Irish cricket team is currently gearing up for the Cricket World Cup which begins later this month. Nine of the fifteen players from the 2007 World Cup campaign are in the squad again this time around. Ireland are in Group B and their first game is against Bangladesh in Dhaka on February 25th. They then face England, India, Holland, South Africa and the West Indies. Australia are the defending champions in the one-day, fifty overs per side format.
FEBRUARY MAY BE IDENTIFIED AS COLD DARK DAYS FILLED WITH LONG, GLOOMY EVENINGS BUT THAT NEEDN’T BE THE CASE WHEN IT COMES TO ENTERTAINING YOUR LITTLE ONES. EVEN THOUGH WE’RE ALL FAR MORE BUDGET CONSCIOUS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR AFTER CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE SHOPPING IT BRINGS, THERE ARE WAYS TO ENTERTAIN THE FAMILY, WITHOUT SPENDING ANY CASH AT ALL.
ave you ever considered giving a small corner of your hallway, kitchen or the playroom over to a nature corner? Children of all ages love nature and the wonder and questions it brings. Items for the nature table can be collected by bundling up the kids and bringing them on long walks, which are great for their fitness levels and their spirits, too. You don’t have to go anywhere special - a walk in the local park will do - but seeing as Wicklow is full of the most amazing, beautiful and recognisable nature spots in the world, you’d be doing your children a disservice not to introduce them to the place they live. The objects on your nature table will be seasonable, stuff like crocuses and an old bird’s nest in spring, or mistletoe and holly in winter. Watch out for empty bird shells in spring and take photos of everyone’s footprints in the snow. Always label each of the items and – if possible - place the table near a window where natural daylight can shine down on your children’s treasures. The items on a nature table will get musty and dusty over time, so it’s important to have some ‘nature time’ on a regular basis. Not only will a nature table excite and ignite the children’s imagination (for free) but it’s a clever and really lovely way of introducing their little minds to the world around us, and how important living creatures are. Don’t despair if you live in an apartment in town either, feathers and leaves can always be found, or get creative by adding dried herbs or photographs of items you can’t find. Print out pictures from the net or trace them from library books – some of the simplest ideas will keep your kiddies entertained for hours.

IDEAS FOR YOUR NATURE TABLE FEBRUARY - MARCH If you have a garden, create a simple bird table and watch the local birds familiarise themselves with the back yard. Help the kiddies identify common, garden birds with a book from the local library – their teachers will love you for it! Introduce the children to mustard and cress seeds and watch as they grow in real time. This is a clever way of introducing cress and other leafy vegetables to the dinner table. Store pinecones and chestnuts on the table – use your imagination and gather anything that will help your children identify the changing seasons. APRIL – AUGUST Discuss hibernating animals and look for bird feathers and old nests. From May onwards, learn the names of wild flowers from local walk-abouts and through library books. Think about creating a wormery – all you need is a plastic bin, some compost, newspaper, kitchen scraps and about 100 worms (which can be bought locally.) A wormery is usually smaller and more compact that a compost heap and is therefore designed to deal with smaller quantites of waste. They produce less smells too, so are ideal for placing outside the back door, close to the kitchen. And as well as entertaining the children, you’ll be proud that you’re doing your bit for the environment, too.
SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER Visit one of our many local beaches and collect wet and dry sand, seaweed and seashells. Stones and smooth glass will look really lovely on your table, too. Pick up some bulbs from local shops and plant them on the table, the children will be fascinated with the growing flowers. Talk a walk outdoors and gather any autumn fruits you can find, sour apples, nuts, pips, berries and leaves. Always label everything clearly – you’re hoping to introduce new things as well as have tons of fun in the process. NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER Try introducing a spider’s web to your nature table! It mightn’t impress you but the kids will love it, we promise. Talk about hibernating animals and maybe draw (or trace) pictures of squirrels, frogs and hedgehogs for the table that the children can spend hours colouring in. Collect mistletoe and holly to drape around the table, these won’t only look lovely but will smell fab too. The nature table is about fun as well as learning, so don’t hesitate in collecting endless pictures of Santa, his reindeer and happy children celebrating the festive season.

If you haven’t picked up CJ Sansom yet then now is the time! Heartstone is the fifth story in the Matthew Shardlake series and will only leave the reader hungry for more. Shardlake – a solicitor in the 1800’s during the reign of King Henry VIII and an all-round ‘good’ man, has another opportunity to work outside London, and in doing so, Sansom has further opportunity to describe the countryside, the town of Portsmouth and delve into the early days of the navy. There are some engaging characters to be met as well, some more integral to the plot than others, and to be fair some of them are a tad stereotypical, but maybe that’s because the stereotypes are true. Fans of the series will be happy with the latest episode and anyone starting on Sansom fresh with Heartstone will have no problem going back to the first in the series, afterwards.
