The offspring of monarchs that overwintered in Mexico will soon start their multi-generational journey to the northern United States and Canada. College Station and areas across Texas are fortunate to witness the spectacular migration.
The City of College Station participates in the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, initiated by the National Wildlife Federation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, to save the declining butterfly population. More than 50 pounds of milkweed seed has been planted at Veterans Park & Athletic Complex, Richard Carter Park, Stephen C. Beachy Central Park, Lick Creek Park, Memorial Cemetery and the Aggie Field of Honor.
Treat yourself to a delicious meal from local food trucks on select Wednesdays at the Wolf Pen Creek Festival Site.
We’ll announce the food trucks on the city’s Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) pages the Monday before each event. Cash and credit card payments are accepted, and you can enjoy music and yard games while savoring your meal.
Food truck vendors interested in participating should contact Recreation Supervisor Luis Perez at 979-764-3649 or lperez@cstx.gov.

$750,000
The City of College Station recently received a $750,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission for Texas Independence Park at Midtown. The project is in the design phase, and construction will start as early as next fall.
In August, the City Council approved the park's master plan for about 68 acres on Rock Prairie Road. Grant-specific bike elements include a bike trail, a pump track, a dual elevated hub, wall rides, and surface flow trails. The park will also feature a destination playground, dog park, fishing pond, natural surface trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course.
College Station is among 21 communities to receive non-urban grants, which fund projects in municipalities with populations under 500,000. The commission approved over $30.9 million in local park grants, a new record, to help create and enhance outdoor recreational opportunities in 50 community parks across Texas.
The competitive grants are allocated to local government entities on a 50/50 reimbursement match basis. Once funded, the sites must remain parkland, properly maintained, and open to the public.
College Station residents are biking more than ever for recreation, commuting to jobs, and running errands. That’s why we’re especially proud to be among the nearly 460 cities as designated Bicycle Friendly Communities by the League of American Bicyclists
The City and local advocates have long been devoted to making our community more accessible and improving bicycling conditions through our policies, infrastructure, and programs. College Station received bronze BFC awards in 2024 and 2020 in recognition of that commitment.
College Station has over 40 miles of shared-use paths, 21 miles of bike routes, and nearly 58 miles of bike lanes. More are proposed in the Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Master Plan as we continue to evaluate and improve designs to increase user safety and comfort.
The BFC award must be renewed every four years through a rigorous application process and provides a benchmark to evaluate conditions and identify areas for improvement. Thanks to all who helped in the application process, along with those who completed an online survey.
As a Bicycle Friendly Community, we’re a leader in the movement to make our cities healthier, more sustainable, and more connected.
After eight years of dedicated service to College Station and the surrounding areas, K9 Ciro has officially retired from duty. His tenure with the College Station Police Department was marked by remarkable achievements, including 480 deployments, 253 arrests, and the seizure of more than 17 kilos of illegal narcotics. His keen instincts and relentless dedication made a lasting impact on public safety, and his contributions to the community will not be forgotten. Now, Ciro will enjoy his well-earned retirement in the loving home of his longtime handler, where he can trade in patrol shifts for a welldeserved life of leisure.
As Ciro steps into retirement, CSPD welcomes the newest member of the K9 unit: K9 Garo. A Belgian Malinois who will soon turn two years old, Garo joined the force a few months ago after completing four months of rigorous training in Utah alongside his handler, Officer Benjamin Tindel. The training prepared the duo for the challenges of law enforcement, equipping them with the skills needed for narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, and criminal apprehensions. The selection process for both the handler and K9 was meticulous, ensuring the strongest possible partnership between officer and dog.
K9 teams play an essential role in modern policing, enhancing law enforcement capabilities in ways that even advanced technology cannot replicate. Their heightened sense of smell and keen intuition make them invaluable assets in locating suspects, uncovering evidence, and de-escalating situations without the use of force.
The College Station Police Department expresses deep gratitude to K9 Ciro for his years of loyal service and extends a warm welcome to K9 Garo. As one chapter closes and another begins, the K9 Unit's commitment to keeping College Station safe remains unwavering. Here’s to a happy retirement for Ciro and a successful and impactful career ahead for Garo.
Contribute to a survey map with suggestions for actions and ideas for the future of the Northgate planning area.
The City of College Station has embarked on a journey to create a shared vision and plan for the Northgate area, one of our city’s most dynamic and cherished places. Developing the Northgate Small Area Plan allows residents, businesses, and stakeholders to come together to envision the future of an iconic part of our community.
The comprehensive planning initiative is designed to guide growth and development. The plan focuses on supporting businesses, enhancing pedestrian-friendly spaces, and celebrating Northgate’s unique character so it remains a thriving hub for residents, visitors, and students.
The Northgate Small Area Plan covers University Drive from Wellborn Road to Texas Avenue and extends to the northern city limits. Key areas of interest are Northgate, the Northgate Entertainment District, Century Square, Hensel Park, Northpoint Crossing, and the North of Northgate plan area.
An at-large stakeholder committee is an integral part of the planning effort. The bi-weekly meetings are every other Tuesday. We hope to complete the plan for City Council consideration in June.

Our Finance Division received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association for the 36th straight year. The award represents a significant achievement and reflects the City's commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
To receive the award, we had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation that assess how well our budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device. Award-winning documents must be rated proficient in all four categories – and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories.
More than 1,700 entities participated in the Budget Awards Program. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

Public Works recently completed work along Bee Creek behind residences on Pershing Avenue and Hawthorn Street. Water flow was undermining the creek slopes, and sinkholes were forming in several backyards. In addition, an old storm sewer pipe that was broken and no longer functional was in the creek bed.
The work was completed entirely by Public Works crews over several weeks, and the cost of materials was less than $13,000.
"Firstly, I want to express a very sincere thank you to City st aff/ leadership for this opportunity of engagement (on the Northgate Small Area Plan). I can speak for my peers as well when I say that it is very appreciated and has fostered positivity. Secondly, our table worked with Heather (Wade) and Laramie (Terrell). Heather guided the exchange very well through keeping things on task and asking positive questions. Laramie was extremely supportive and helpful to both ourselves and to Heather. Laramie did a great job of rapid-fire jotting down the hot-button words/items. Thank you again for this engagement."
“Just wanted to give recognition to the line crew you got out here on Gunsmith street. Hard working dudes, very professional. Poles gotta be changed out, they’re doing their best.”
“I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the outstanding service provided by Devin (Bernal) on the night crew. The speed and efficiency with which our water leak (at 701 Swiss Ct) was addressed is truly impressive. Devin’s professionalism and dedication to ensuring everything was handled promptly did not go unnoticed. Please extend my thanks to Devin and the entire team for their hard work and commitment to excellent service. I’m so glad I made College Station my home!”
