FALL CLASS SCHEDULE Inside

COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS • THE PROMISE OF OPPORTUNITY SINCE 1969

Nearly 2,000 Classes Offered this Fall

C

ollege of the Canyons will offer 1,994 classes this fall, with the vast majority in online and remote formats. Classes start Monday, Aug. 24. Registration, which is now under way for specific populations, starts July 27 for new matriculated students and July 29 for continuing students. Registration will continue through August. The semester runs through Dec. 12. A significant emphasis is being placed on general-education classes that students need to graduate, transfer, or meet specific program prerequisites.

In-person classes will be limited to those that support essential workforce activities, such as COVID-19 response, housing, and the state-designated essential infrastructure workforce. Approximately 110 classes in programs such as Nursing, Emergency Medical Technician, Welding, and Construction Management fall into that category, per Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines. With most classes delivered online and in distance learning formats, local FALL | 2

Pandemic Triggers Remote Instruction

T

he fall semester will be offered primarily online and remotely to provide as little disruption as possible during the coronavirus pandemic. “The health and safety of our students, faculty, staff and community continue to be of paramount importance,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van hook said. “We are working to identify

solutions that provide a wide range of opportunities for current students to continue their educations, enable community members to obtain job skills to secure employment, and give a new group of students – our future alumni – the chance to join us as we kick off the new academic year.” REMOTE | 4

California Budget Aims to Protect Education Funding

G

ov. Gavin Newsom signed a $202.1 billion state budget that prevents widespread cuts to public services, including apportionments and categorical programs for California community colleges, to close a multibillion-dollar deficit caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The spending plan for 2020/21 protects against cuts to the Strong Workforce Program and Student Equity and Achievement, keeping the programs at previous-year spending levels. “While the governor’s budget reflects the harsh realities of the overall economic climate caused by the coronavirus pandemic, I am encouraged that cuts to apportionment funding have been prevented, and that funding for workforce training and student equity and achievement programs will continue,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said. “The budget also reinforces the significant role California’s BUDGET | 4

ollege of the Canyons Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook was appointed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Economic Resiliency Task Force to the Education Sector Work Team, which created a framework for the reopening of colleges and universities. Dr. Van Hook was appointed to the 19-person team of education administrators by 5th District Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “I am honored to have been invited to create a plan for the safe reopening of our colleges and universities,” Dr. Van Hook said. “Besides ensuring that our students can continue and complete their courses of study, this work is essential to our focus on creating safe educational and training environments that will enable people who are unemployed or underemployed to obtain the skills they need so they can enter and move forward in the workforce.” The Education Sector Work Team focused on the rationale for campus reopenings and reported its findings to the L.A. County Economic Resiliency Task Force in July.

News Briefs THEATRE DEPARTMENT PLANS VIRTUAL SHOWS

While the coronavirus pandemic has shuttered playhouses and theaters across the country, the College of the Canyons Theatre Department has found a way for the show to go on. The department will present three virtual performances for students during the fall semester: “110 Stories,” “Woyzeck,” and a new devised piece based on student experiences during the pandemic. To ensure the safety of performers, faculty and staff, all performances will be rehearsed and presented via live video. “We are dedicated to continuing our commitment to our students and their educational goals,” said Jennifer Smolos, dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts. “While many other colleges and programs have postponed or cancelled performances, we continue our work to find innovative ways to adapt to this new learning environment.”

hile College of the Canyons transitioned most of its courses and services to an online format, something else went online. The college came one step closer to energy independence when its new Bloom Energy Corp. fuel cell system went online for the first time on March 24. The first phase of the fuel cell system, which will provide the college with nearly a megawatt of power, achieved 100 percent output within 24 hours. The second phase, which will generate more than 500,000 kilowatts of power and bring total plant production to 1.5 megawatts, will be completed in the fall. “This is a very exciting step for the college’s sustainability efforts,” said Jim Schrage, vice president of facilities planning, operations and construction. “Our new fuel cell technology system will dramatically reduce the college’s emissions, carbon footprint, and dependency on the energy grid. We want to thank Bloom Energy Corp. for helping us improve our energy efficiency.” Located on the west side of campus, the fuel cell was part of an upgrade to the college’s existing fuel cell technology system, made possible by a $3 million award from the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Previously, the college relied on the original Bonelli Hall central plant, the south campus plant and a third plant on the north side of campus for its heating, cooling and hot water needs. The system overhaul included removing two co-generators, upgrading the existing cooling tower, and adding a new chiller to compensate for the lost production of cold water previously produced by the existing co-generator. A central plant is a facility that houses chillers, boilers, and cooling towers that serve as a single supply source for hot water and chilled water that services multiple buildings

Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook has been named to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal’s “Valley 200” list. “It is an honor to have been selected,” Dr. Van Hook said. “As CEO of College of the Canyons, it has been rewarding to watch our college team and see its impact extend far past the Santa Clarita Valley as we continue to provide workforce training to businesses and higher education opportunities to the San Fernando Valley.” The 200 people on the list were selected for being the most influential in the area. “Many are professionals,” wrote Charles Crumpley, publisher and editor of the publication. “But all are engaged and active. They are the most influential people in our community.”

AMONG TOP COLLEGES FOR HISPANICS

College of the Canyons has been ranked nationally No. 22 and 25 in The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine for enrolling the largest number of Hispanic students and granting the most degrees, respectively. The rankings for the Top 25 Community Colleges for Hispanics are based on nationwide statistics for community colleges granting the most associate degrees in 2018. According to the data, the college had a Hispanic population of 10,004 students, nearly half of total enrollment, in fall 2018. Of the 2,601 associate degrees awarded that year, 1,195 degree recipients were Hispanic. “Higher education is a pathway to life-changing opportunities, but we recognize students often face obstacles,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said. “We have made it our mission to remove barriers so that every student can access education and achieve their full potential.”

from a central location. The college has made use of central plants to reduce waste and create an energy efficient campus from the very beginning.  The college installed its first central plant on the roof of what is now Bonelli Hall, but as the campus continued to grow, the need for expansion of the central plant became apparent in the early 1990s. Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook secured funding for the South Plant, located near Mentry Hall, which was the first real central plant in the California Community College System.   “College of the Canyons is proud to have been at the forefront of implementing new energy-efficient technology,” Dr. Van Hook

said. “We are always looking for innovative ways to continue improving upon our sustainability efforts at both our campuses.” The college was one of only three educational institutions to receive an incentive fund from SCAQMD in 2019 to replace older, higher-emitting appliances and equipment with zero- and near-zero emission technologies. As in years past, a number of short-term courses designed to meet the needs of working adults also

will be offered. Those courses are scheduled to begin in September. Enrollment fees at all 116 California Community Colleges remain at $46 per unit. College of the Canyons has received a $4,750 grant award from the California Arts Council to fund an arts integration program that will establish partnerships among five professional artists and five teachers in local K-12 school districts. Each of the participating artist/teacher pairs will develop methods that integrate arts into the core subjects of their curriculum. “The activities undertaken with support from the California Arts Council will build upon the existing arts instruction being delivered to K-12 students,” said Kristen Gunn, arts education technician at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center. “By pairing teachers with professional artists to develop focused professional development opportunities to infuse arts across subject areas, these activities will reach far more teachers and their students.”

DISTRICT COMMUNICATIONS RECOGNIZED

The College of the Canyons District Communications Office has won three Paragon Awards from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations. The team won a first-place award for its video short on the Uniquely Abled Program, which was produced in partnership with FEGO Cinematography; a second-place award for its Monday Report electronic newsletter, and a third-place award for its Friday Night Film Series poster. The only national competition of its kind, the awards recognize outstanding achievement in design and communication at two-year colleges colleges. “I extend my congratulations to our District Communications Office for this well-deserved national recognition,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said. “The work they do is indispensable to our college’s goal to maintain timely and open communication with our students, staff, and the communities we serve, and expand access to education.” The competition drew 1,963 entries from 261 colleges across the U.S.

or the 60 graduates of the College of the Canyons Registered Nurse Class of 2020, entry into the world of nursing was baptism by fire. After graduating virtually on June 3, many of them joined other nurses and healthcare workers in the frontline battle against coronavirus (COVID-19). “This semester has been unlike any other,” said Mary Corbett, director of the college’s nursing program. “For us to be sending 60 graduates into practice, having met all Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requirements to sit for the licensure examination, is nothing short of amazing. We are so proud of our students for never giving up through an incredibly challenging time.” As COVID-19 cases began to escalate in communities nationwide, nursing clinical training programs came to a screeching halt as hospitals began to mobilize to handle the influx of cases. Ashley Olivier, a first-year nursing student, became understandably worried about how she would be able to fulfill the nursing clinical hours required by the BRN to graduate. “Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the safety of all nursing students being a top priority, I was concerned how we would finish our clinical hours that are required by the BRN since local hospitals were not allowing nurs-

ing students to perform clinical hours,” Olivier said. Following urgent advocacy efforts by College of the Canyons Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook, as well as other community colleges and nursing leaders throughout the state, the Department of Consumer Affairs on April 3 waived restrictions on nursing student clinical hours, reducing the requirement that clinical hours be in direct patient care from 75 percent to 50 percent for nursing students in obstetrics, pediatrics, and mental health/psychiatric courses. For nursing students in geriatrics and medical-surgical courses, the waiver allows up to 50 percent of patient

care through simulation or lab training, provided that certain conditions are met. The college’s nursing leadership successfully completed the requirements to gain the full benefit of the 50 percent waiver for nursing students. The waiver also made it possible for the nurse education consultant (a local BRN representative) to approve clinical sites through a simplified process, which allowed for timely approvals for programs seeking new settings for clinical instruction. Calling the waiver the best news she has received in weeks, Olivier now feels optimistic about the future of her student-nursing experience. The college’s 177 nursing students benefitted from the DCA waiver, which allowed a full cohort of students to graduate at the end of the spring semester and join the fight against COVID-19. In response to pandemic conditions, nursing faculty designed and launched a “telehealth” program to provide mental health and self-care support to the college’s Canyons Promise students. Face Shields Created for First Responders A s the coronavirus pandemic escalated and personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare professionals proved scarce, the College of the Canyons MakerSpace fired up its 3-D printing machines and went to work. “Our MakerSpace is a place for innovation and ingenuity,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said. “It was a privilege for the college to harness the creativity, focus and energy to support our local hospital, which is a strong partner of College of the Canyons and has been the employer of choice for so many of our nursing graduates.” After 10 days of running its six 3-D printers, MakerSpace assembled 150 face shields, which were delivered to the hospital on April 28. “We are very grateful to College of the Canyons for these face shields,” said Marlee Lauffer, president of the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation and vice president of marketing and communications for the hospital. “In today’s environment, it’s impossible to have too much PPE. Our entire staff, and especially our frontline healthcare workers, deeply appreciate COC’s resourcefulness and generosity.” During the time it took instructional laboratory technician Christopher Walker to make one face shield, his mind inevitably turned to members of his own family who work in the medical field. “If we can help prevent one transmission of COVID-19 or make just one healthcare worker or emergency responder feel just a little bit safer doing their job, we have achieved what we had hoped to do – to help others,” Walker said. MakerSpace assembled additional face shields that have been placed into inventory to meet future needs if necessary.

services toward the training hours needed for their psychiatric nursing course. Students are supervised by nursing clinical faculty via Zoom for a virtual clinical experience. “I’m now able to complete my clinical hours and do it in a way that’s never been done before in the history of the College of the Canyons nursing program,” Olivier said. “I am excited to be able to complete my clinical requirements by using the skills I am learning in my current psychology rotation to help any which way I can in the community using telehealth.” Nursing student Jacob White said gaining the telehealth experience as a student is priceless. “To have the ability to use this technology to help our fellow students in our college is not only helping us nursing students, but also the rest of the college campus,” White said, adding that he has noticed how college students are eager for follow-up calls and have become aware of college resources that are available to them. “To be a nursing student going through their psychology portion during a pandemic is something you would never expect, but I am proud of our nursing faculty and school’s administration for providing us with this ability,” he said. “This is a big change toward the future of healthcare, and College of the Canyons is clearly fostering it.” In addition, more than 80 nursing students volunteering at the on-campus COVID-19 testing site were able to count those hours toward their training requirements and completion. Fourteen students and one faculty member have staffed the site seven days per week, working with L.A. County Fire Department personnel and leadership from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. On some days, students helped conduct more than 300 self-administered COVID-19 tests at the drive-through site. “I feel proud to have the opportunity to be a part of a team that can change students’ lives for the better,” said Dr. Kathy Bakhit, dean of the college’s School of Health Professions and Public Safety. Bakhit said the nursing program is working hard to identify additional volunteer opportunities for students to fit course objectives.

‘I am beyond proud of our nursing faculty and students, who refused to give up and demonstrated incredible grit, courage and ingenuity.’ – DR. DIANNE G. VAN HOOK, CHANCELLOR

“I am inspired by their moral courage, their dedication to the students, and their attention to the quality of the program,” Bakhit said of the nursing faculty. Bakhit also lauded Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook for her strong leadership and advocacy. “Honestly, without her effort and focus where she organized and rallied over 65 other college presidents and chancellors across the state, as well as our state chancellor, to elevate the issue and articulate

the changes needed, I am not sure that colleges would have this opportunity we have today,” said Bakhit. Dr. Van Hook called the waiver a perfect “example of getting a barrier out of the way so we can work better, together.” “I am beyond proud of our nursing faculty and students who refused to give up and demonstrated incredible grit, courage and ingenuity,” she said. “I am confident that this experience will make our students better prepared for the challeng-

community colleges will play in educating and training the workforce, and rebuilding the state’s economy,” Dr. Van Hook added. “College of the Canyons will be instrumental in that effort as we continue to take bold steps to support our students and embrace innovation to fulfill our mission,” she added. The amended budget extends minimum revenue provisions under the Student-Centered Funding Formula by an additional two years.

Approximately 7 percent of career technical education classes will be offered in a hybrid mode, and select labs will be held on campus. The college’s decision was made after consultation with health experts and collaboration with faculty members, classified staff, incident command staff, and the college’s COVID-19 task force. College operations will continue per recommendations from the L.A. County Department of Public Health, the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. hey danced in their living rooms, composed music in their bedrooms, and got handson nursing experience at a coronavirus testing site. The College of the Canyons Class of 2020 is truly unlike any other in the college’s 50year history. The graduating class was honored during a virtual commencement ceremony for all students on June 5, as well as smaller, more focused celebrations for programs such as Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Culinary Arts, and International Students. “I wish to extend my sincerest congratulations to the Class of 2020 who have shown themselves to be those rare individuals who can thrive in adversity,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said. “The success of our college is because of our graduates. I look forward to seeing the records the Class of 2020 will break and the change they will make in this world.” The class of 2020 numbered 2,427 graduates representing 102 majors. Liberal arts and sciences was the leading field of study with 576 graduates, followed by psychology (314), business (308), accounting (178), and liberal arts and sciences with a health emphasis (153). More than 900 students graduated with two or more degrees, 746 students graduated with honors, and 80 graduates achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs, granting them status as valedictorians. Also graduating were 77 veterans and 85 student-athletes. Although the average age was 24, the class of 2020 was decidedly multigenerational, with ages ranging from 17 to 81. Graduates from the class of 2020 are transferring to numerous universities, including UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, USC, and many outside California.

Nursing Program Donates Supplies to Hospital

I

n light of the global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare professionals handling coronavirus cases, the College of the Canyons nursing program donated essential equipment to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “College of the Canyons has had a longstanding relationship with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where so many of our nursing alumni are proud to be currently employed,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said. “During this unprecedented time, we are committed to helping our local medical first responders in any way that we can. We

are grateful for and applaud the efforts of all first responders who are on the frontlines of this epidemic.” “We are very grateful for the generous donation from the College of the Canyons nursing program during this challenging time,” said Jennifer Castaldo, the hospital’s vice president and chief nursing officer. “COC’s generosity is reflective of the generous spirit in the Santa Clarita Valley.” The donation was made possible thanks to the coordinated statewide efforts of the college and John Cordova, health sector navigator and statewide director for the Health Workforce Initiative, a program of

the Workforce and Economic Development division of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, hosted at College of the Canyons. “Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital’s clinical experts have been outstanding contributors to the professional clinical education of countless nursing and medical laboratory technician students for over two decades,” said Dr. Kathy Bakhit, dean of health professions and public safety at the college. “College of the Canyons’ faculty, students, staff and administrators are all truly grateful that the college could support them directly in this way.”

DONATIONS • 240 N95 masks • 250 regular masks • 200 masks with face shields • 30 PPE gowns • 15 goggles • 300 PPE hair covers • 50 disposable stethoscopes • 800 ear thermometer probe covers • 3,500 thermometer probe covers • 300 otoscope covers • 15 boxes of 100 non-sterile gloves • 17 boxes of 25-pair sterile gloves

Faculty Transition to Remote Instruction I Uniquely Positioned ’ll show it to you on the screen, Bernardo Feldman said as he displayed a piece of paper with handwritten music notes on the computer screen. “This is what my paper looks like.” Feldman, chair of the College of the Canyons music department, was leading his Music 120A class through its first tonal harmony lesson via an online discussion. Despite a few interruptions by an ambulance siren and cell phones buzzing off screen, the class worked together to harmonize a simple melody. When the college transitioned most of its in-person courses to remote delivery in March, recreating an online classroom environment where students and faculty could hold discussions, collaborate and create proved no easy feat. This was especially true for professors who had limited online teaching experience. Many faculty members underwent crash training because they had never used Zoom or Canvas before. “I had to stop my lectures a couple of times to ask the more tech-savvy students how to do something on Zoom,” said Phil Gussin, a political science professor who initially struggled with the new technology. Fortunately, many professors with online teaching experience offered their less experienced colleagues a helping hand. “There were so many faculty who needed help, and everyone pitched in,” said Victoria Leonard, a communication studies professor who spent many hours helping train colleagues on how to use Canvas. While the sudden transition to remote learning was challenging, the transition forced her to think outside the box, Leonard said. “I have used Canvas in ways that I never did before, and I am thrilled with new discoveries,” she said. “I am also using Zoom in ways I would never have dreamed.” Leonard is encouraging student engagement by using the “groups” and “breakout room” features to allow for

collaboration and discussion. “I record lectures so that if a student needs that content, it is available,” she said. “I have also taken specific lectures that are very important and linked them into Canvas.” Her efforts to go the extra mile have not gone unnoticed by her students. “Online learning is very difficult for me, but somehow you are still able to make class fun and seem like normal,” Kyra Kauffman wrote in an

“We are both making the best of our situation,” Julie Lawson, director of the Just Jazz ensemble. “We’ve been communicating with each other, trying to figure out the smartest way to stay connected with our students.” To better assist her students, Lawson purchased an overhead video stand for her iPhone so she can record herself playing piano for her keyboard class. “I send them videos of me playing their assignments,” Lawson said. “It’s

Theatre students utilized video-conferencing technology to perform the stage play “Pippin,” which was originally scheduled to take place at the Performing Arts Center. email. “Thank you for being so responsive to this situation and taking time to hear our perspectives about what’s going on.” Gussin said he has noticed the transition to remote learning has led to more class participation. “Oddly enough, some students who were reluctant to speak up in a classroom setting felt more comfortable speaking in a Zoom session,” Gussin said. The collaborative spirit among faculty has proven invaluable. For music instructors, remote learning poses an exceptional challenge, but faculty members Julie Lawson and Lori Marie Rios are learning to strike a different chord.

not ideal, but it seems to be working.” This semester marks the first time Rios has taught Music Fundamentals, which she now teaches from the back of her daughter’s beauty parlor because it has a whiteboard installed. “I miss the students and the interaction between us, but it is working, and the students like it as well,” Rios said. The hardest thing for Rios was transitioning her choir classes into an online format due to technological lags, but the kinks seemed to have been worked out. “Students learned their parts individually, and each student sang that part to one of the songs,” she said. “It was a success. Students were applauding each other.”

to Keep Teaching

W

hen the world pivoted to doing everything remotely, the United Nations estimated that 1.2 billion learners – or 70 percent of students worldwide – were affected by school closures. College of the Canyons was well positioned to help students to keep learning, having offered its first hybrid classes in 1999 and fully online classes starting in 2005. At the start of the spring 2020 semester, nearly 25 percent of the college’s classes were offered online. Moreover, half of the faculty were fully certified to teach in this format. Faculty are required to complete specialized training before teaching online classes. Key areas of training include building community and encouraging interaction online; making content accessible to all students, including those with disabilities; and assessing student learning in a distance format. Innovation and faculty training contribute to College of the Canyons students performing better in online classes than other California community colleges. The college’s success rate for students in online classes is 71 percent, compared to 66 percent statewide, and 87 percent of students complete their online classes, compared to 84 percent statewide. Since the college transitioned to distance education in March, students have continued to receive free academic support. The library offers free 24/7 chat with a librarian, 14,000 e-books to check out, and dozens of databases of specialized research articles. Students can receive free tutoring online for most subjects, with the same qualified tutors who provided in-person support. During the fall semester, students will be able to receive free tutoring 46 hours per week. Students can select from hundreds of classes that use Zero Textbook Cost materials, or free textbooks created by faculty to support what our students need to learn. During the 2019/20 academic year, students saved approximately $5 million in textbook costs.

FALL 2020 | COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS BREAKING NEWS

Construction of the Science Center at the Canyon Country campus is on track for completion later this year. The center is expected to open for instruction next summer.

Audit: Bond Measures in Compliance

T

he Santa Clarita Community College District’s Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee has accepted the results of an inde- MEASURE pendent audit confirming that, for the 12th year in a row, the district has properly accounted for all bond expenditures and issued the district an un- MEASURE modified opinion – the best rating possible – noting no adjustments, audit findings, questioned costs or instances of noncompliance. Eide Bailly LLP conducted the financial and performance audits for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019 and presented its report to the Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee on Jan. 16. “It’s reassuring to have an independent auditor come in and look at everything to ensure full transparency,” said Nick Lentini, chair of the committee. The 2018/19 audit for Measure M

M E

confirms approximately $175 million in resources from the four bond issuances, which also includes earned interest and net premium on the bonds. The entire amount has been expended on authorized bond projects, closing out the Measure M bond fund as of June 30, 2019. The 2018/19 audit for Measure E confirms approximately $55 million in resources from the first bond issuance, which also includes earned interest and net premium on the bonds. Of that amount, more than $36 million has been expended on authorized bond projects, leaving the district with a Measure E bond project fund balance of nearly $19 million as of June 30, 2019. Sharlene Coleal, assistant superintendent/vice president of business services, acknowledged the excellent work of Jim Schrage, assistant superintendent/vice president, facilities, and district staff members who contributed to a clean audit. “The team effort displayed between

Business Services and the Facilities Department resulted in another year of exceptional audits,” Coleal said. Since Measure M’s passage by voters in 2006, the $160 million bond measure has helped fund a wide variety of facilities, such as the Mentry Hall expansion, The Learning Center/Library expansion, Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center, Canyon Country campus, College of the Canyons Institute for Culinary Education, and Canyons Hall. The bond also helped secure $36.7 million in additional state matching funds that otherwise would have been lost. Voters approved Measure E in 2016 for a total of $230 million to fund multiple projects at both campuses. The bonds are funding construction of the Science Center at the Canyon Country campus. The approximately 55,000-square-foot building will be devoted primarily to physical and biological sciences. The Student Services/Learning Re-

sources Center will be the new home to Student Services and The Learning Center. The four-story building will sit adjacent to the Science Center at the center of campus and will provide office and library space. “We are very excited with the progress of the Science Center and are looking forward to breaking ground on the adjacent Student Services/Learning Resources Center, both of which will enhance the access, persistence, and success of our students,” Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said. “None of this would be possible were it not for the support of our local community that shares our commitment to making higher education accessible in the Santa Clarita Valley.” At the Valencia campus, Measure E enabled the college to build a three-story parking structure that added 1,659 parking spaces. Measure E funds will now support the renovation of several buildings at the Valencia campus and further expansion at the Canyon Country campus.

Student-Athletes Honored for Excellence

T

he College of the Canyons Athletic Department has named its Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Award winners for the 2019-20 academic year. To be eligible, student-athletes must have competed in their sport for two seasons and demonstrated tremendous leadership qualities, with combined GPA a determining factor. The honorees are:

Elizabeth Gannon

• Volleyball Gannon achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, one of just 80 graduates to achieve valedictorian status. The kinesiology major is transferring to California State University, Northridge this fall, where she will continue her athletic career. She is the third Canyons volleyball player to transfer to an NCAA Division I program since 2017. A two-time All-Western State Conference (WSC) honoree at the libero position, Gannon completed the 2019 regular season with 272 digs, 61 aces and 24 assists while playing in all 75 sets. She tied for the conference lead in aces and ranked seventh in digs, while helping the team to a seventh-straight postseason appearance.

GANNON

ZIERER

member of the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Scholar Team. She is transferring to USC this fall to study journalism. As a freshman in 2019, Stanisavljevic finished the regular season with a 12-4 individual record and 10-3 mark in WSC play. In doing so she became the first player in college history to earn all-conference honors after being named to the All-WSC Second-Team as a singles player. In 2020, Stanisavljevic helped lead the the team to a 9-2 team record and 5-2 mark against conference opponents, including six straight victories to begin the season. Those numbers represent the best season record in the tennis program’s three-year history, despite having its final seven matches canceled due to COVID-19.

MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF A CHANGING WORLD...

TOGETHER!

The Chancellor’s Circle is a partnership between College of the Canyons and a diverse group of businesses, community members, non-profit groups, government leaders and others who are committed to strengthening our community – by actively supporting a strong community college. The underlying tenet of the Chancellor’s Circle is the strong belief that by working together we can add value to a community college education, provide support for creative and innovative programs that enrich the educational experience of students, and provide needed workforce skills that will strengthen and sustain our economy – that we can achieve, by working together, much more than we can by working alone.
