Resources for Individual Success in Education (R.I.S.E.) The College of the Canyons R.I.S.E. program exists to improve access to higher education for current/former foster and homeless youth; increase retention, graduation and transfer rates and promote student learning and development. Here are some of the areas of support and resources offered through RISE: • Educational and Career Counseling • Priority Registration • Textbook Vouchers • Meal Cards • Transportation Assistance • School Supply Assistance

Homelessness On Our Campus, the Need is Real A recent L.A. Times Opinion Column brought the statistics closer to home reporting, “1 in 5 California Community College students are homeless.” Who are these students? At the College of the Canyons, many of these students are U.S. Veterans who bravely served our nation; or single parents trying to raise their child/children while attending college; or they are emancipated foster youth facing new challenges that make it difficult and sometimes impossible to consider a college education; or they are students pursuing the “American Dream” of becoming the first in their families to earn a college degree.
Happening Right in Our Own Backyard At College of the Canyons, we have approximately 200 students that have self-identified as battling with homelessness. The Resources for Individual Success in Education (R.I.S.E.) program wants to help these students through the support providing students with a “Campus Survival Kit.” These kits contain basic personal care items and college school supplies. Items that exist in these Campus Survival Packs include: • Backpack or duffle bag
• Personal Care Items: toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, body wash, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, socks, deodorant, flip-flops and washcloths, reusable water bottles • Food insecurity support: Subway gift card, granola bars, water bottles,
• College supplies: Scantrons 882-E, 3x5 notecards, combination locks mechanical pencils and pens, subject spiral college ruled notebooks, ring binders, tab dividers, mini staplers, and academic planners. • Transportation support—Gas Card or TAP card
• Information packet to access COC and regional services for homeless individuals A $175 contribution will purchase a “Campus Survival Kit” for a homeless COC student. This is a tangible way to support and help students cope with an emerging personal crisis. Each kit costs $175 and to fund all 200 students, we need $35,000. By making your individual contribution, you communicate to these homeless students that you care; that you recognize their plight; and that you are pulling for them. Your help can make a real difference to them.
