A SORORITY CLIMB
By Coco Wham was recently slated as the next president of my sorority and quickly found myself attempting to find ways in which I can establish both unity and enthusiasm for the chapter in our house. I also recently attended
a leadership academy in which leaders from each house on campus were able to discuss issues within their houses with the rest of the Panhellenic community. Here, you will find an outline of these issues and the ways in which these issues can be addressed. The ideas for increasing participation and establishing unity are based on research I have conducted and experiences I have had.
THE PROBLEM: ATTENDANCE OF OPTIONAL EVENTS Many leaders expressed their frustrations with the lack of attendance of members to optional events such as sisterhoods and personal development programs. Here Are Some Ways to Fix It: t*ODSFBTFIPVTFXJEFJOWPMWFNFOUJOQMBOOJOHFWFOUT%SBXGSPNEJČFSFOUHSPVQTBOEUZQFTPGMFBEFSTXJUIJO the house to help plan events. Year in school: 'SFTINBO Major: Integrative Physiology What is your favorite Greek memory? My favorite memories thus far were our big/little reveal and our annual philanthropy, Halloween House, which is when we decorate our sorority house for families around the community to come and play games and USJDLPSUSFBUJOUIFIPVTF What lessons and values will you take with you that you acquired in Greek life? The main lesson I have acquired would be that I’ve learned how to communicate better and am no longer afraid of meeting and talking to new people. My sisters have also helped me to break out of my shell.
How has being in a sorority shaped your college experience? It’s helped me to find a community in a school that’s so big. It has also helped to spark my interest in involvement at school and activities elsewhere. What are your plans for after college? I’m interested in nursing right now so hopefully pursuing further education in that, and I would also like to stay very involved in the community, so I can excited to see how I can do that. What are you most excited for in your sorority? I am excited to meet all kinds of new people.
