EMPTY CITY _ WAKING UP


_ INTRODUCTION


GORLITZ GERMANY

Situated at the German/Polish border Gorlitz on the German side is facing the city of Zgorzelec on the Polish side, the two cities are separated by a river but connected by two bridge. The first one is a pedestrian bridge linking the old center of Gorlitz to the polish side. The other bridge is the main car access between the two cities. The city of Gorlitz is organised by a old city center, and its near towns as part of a fractal suburb. It is one of few cities in Germany not bombed by the allies during the WWII, and because of that the city became a major interest as the city decide few years ago to renovated almost entirely the old center highlighting the architecture and create maybe one of the most ancien architecture heritage in Germany. Because of that the city could be intreresting for tourist but the biggest problem is that it’s very difficult to get to Gorlitz because the city is clearly disconneted from the transportation system. You need to take three diffrents train from Berlin to finally arrived in Gorlitz. The city became also attractive for old elderly people because of intresting rates and fiscalitiy which make one of the most conviniante in Germany and also by a large number of retirement house in the area. But in fact people are not really comming. Edlerdy prefer surrounding town as the North prefabricated housing developement built during the communism era and young people are leaving as soon as the graduate, interesting of finding a job in large city where they have clearly more opportunities. In fact it’s difficult to fing a job and if companies like Bombardier and Siemens have facilities in Gorlitz is it is mostly to benefit from polish workers much more cheaper that German workers. The result is a city center almost empty, dozens of abandonned buildings and half of flats are vacants resulting of a city center which is not attractive anymore. So the idea is to Reinstate the old town to the city. Take empty spaces as an advantage by making them the central piece of a larger picture. Gorlitz need to be up grade by experimenting a solution that is not just symbolic but became a long term strategy to get Gorlitz on track again. Insure, the city’s future. Gorlitz need to reinvente itself.
