Your official guide

Welcome ... We’re thrilled to bring you the 2011 CoastOut Festival. The feedback we received in 2010 was more than enough motivation to do it again! CoastOut combines sport, music, art, culture and community and mixes it with a touch of magic! Attracting visitors from around the country, CoastOut invites you to enjoy a weekend away and discover the natural beauty of Coffs Harbour and the surrounding hinterland. Last year, CoastOut was warmly welcomed by locals and visitors. This year’s festival boasts all the show-stopping favourites from 2010, plus some exciting new events. The 2011 program sees the debut of ‘The CoastOut Concert’, ‘Queer Film Shorts’ and Art Exhibition and we are especially proud to partner with Southern Cross

University to present the first “CoastOut Gender & Sexuality Conference”. Add a star-studded line up of local, national and international guests and performers and you are guaranteed to be thoroughly entertained from the Welcome Cocktail Party right through to the Beach Party Finale and all the other special events in between. We invite you to ‘Bring Your Magic’, and your friends, pack your sequins and swimmers and mark your calendar for a weekend of Sun, Sand, Surf and Fun! Ride an UNreal wave or two The now-annual CoastOut surfing competition will once again rip up the beaches of the Coffs Coast in 2011. Sponsored by Coffs Harbour’s UNREAL Estate, the world’s first gay and lesbian surfing competition will be held on Saturday, October 29, making it the ideal way to grab a tan and catch some hot surfing action before that night’s dance party. Organisers have again pulled together a bunch of surfing professionals to organise, coordinate, commentate and judge the one-day salt-water event. This year’s competition will be mobile, meaning entrants will be advised of the location on the day to ensure they are able to ride the best surf conditions possible. As well as giving spectators plenty of sexy bods to look at, there will be a host of great prizes up for

grabs, with the winners crowned at the CoastOut Fair Day on Sunday, October 30.

Swim, run, have loads of fun Australia’s first GLBTI beach carnival has a great choice of events for everyone. The CoastOut Beach Carnival Crew will strut to the sand for a 10.30am start on Saturday, October 29 for some fun-filled hours. The day will start with the 4km Beach Run followed by a 1.2km Harbour Ocean Swim. Then we will see who is the fastest on the sand in the 80m beach sprints and the CoastOut banana beach flags, and also who will be crowned the best team in the relay swim. All this plus the chance to win cash and prizes worth thousands of dollars. If you think it’s all too much, head to the CoastOut sandpit for the fun part of the morning with sand modelling, Frisbee exhibition, our very own handbag and toolbelt toss or even a game of beach volleyball. For a more relaxed morning, enjoy the sight of your friends competing in such fun events in the wonderful environment the

Coffs Coast has to offer. The CoastOut Beach Carnival is for the young and the young-at-heart. Whether you compete in the fun and frivolity or just enjoy the sun, it’s sure to be one of the highlights of the festival for 2011 and for years to come. Let’s see you on the beach and show us your magic. INFO: Registrations close October 15. Download your registration form and find out more at

Gender & sexuality conference CoastOut is thrilled to present the first community education conference in partnership with Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour. The conference - which includes a Q&A session with Vanessa Wagner (pictured) - will bring together academics from the disciplines of health, psychology and law, to engage with the community on the latest research on ‘Gender and Sexuality in Rural and Regional Australia’. The full-day conference hopes to provide the latest information to the Mid North Coast in the areas of gender, sexuality and transgender issues — including isolation, best health practice and law reform — and move regional Australia to a worldclass understanding of gender and sexuality.

Organisers thank Southern Cross University for supporting the event. INFO: The conference will be held in room D350 at Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour, on Friday, October 28, 9am5pm. Register at

A few words about our speakers Rodney Croome

Keynote Presenter Rodney Croome will be known to many LGBT Australians as a spokesperson for the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group. In that capacity he fronted the long, bitter and ultimately successful campaign to decriminalise homosexuality in Tasmania. That campaign saw Tasmanian activists take their case for equality not only to the parliament and people of Tasmania, but to the United

Nations, the federal Government and the High Court. Less well known is Rodney’s other LGBT community and human rights work. He was the founding president and long-term board member of the Tasmanian LGBT support organisation, Working It Out, project officer of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s rural LGBT youth network, Outlink, and co-convenor of the Australia Council for Lesbian and Gay Rights. In this latter capacity, in 1993 Rodney became the first gay advocate to speak at a United Nations forum. Currently, Rodney is a board member of the International Lesbian and Gay Law Association, the Australian Coalition for Equality, and the Australian Human Rights Group. As a member of Tasmania’s four LGBT community/ government liaison committees, Rodney has played a leading role in establishing challenginghomophobia education in Tasmanian state schools and in the Tasmania Police Service. As a researcher and legal advisor,

Rodney has played a pivotal role in several groundbreaking Tasmanian antidiscrimination cases on issues such as transgender vilification and gay blood donation. Rodney is also the campaign coordinator of Australian Marriage Equality. His advocacy for marriage equality includes being the co-author of the first book on the issue published in Australia. His comments on LGBT issues are frequently sought by the media. His columns appear regularly in the LGBT and mainstream publications, as do his essays on cultural and historical themes.

Daniel Witthaus

Presenter For almost 15 years Daniel Witthaus has challenged homophobia in Australian schools. He developed the Pride and Prejudice educational package and trains young people, teachers and health professionals. In 2006 Daniel joined the

COASTOUT 2011 CONFERENCE Gender and Sexuality in Rural and Regional Australia FRI 28 OCTOBER International Advisory Committee of the Global Alliance for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) Education. His work has included locations such as Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and the United States. In 2010 Daniel completed a 38-week Beyond ‘That’s So Gay’ national challenging homophobia tour of regional, rural and remote Australia au and launched his first book, Beyond ‘That’s So Gay’: Challenging Homophobia in Australian Schools. Take home a taste of the coast While memories of CoastOut are a great thing to leave with, this year festival organisers are giving you the chance to take home a more tangible memory. A handful of Coffs Coast artists have got together to produce a range of stunning artwork that will be on display as part of this year’s festival. The works offer up a dynamic mix of sensory expressions that will look impressive hanging on your wall. Each work in the exhibition, to be held at the Cr8 Studio in the heart of Coffs Harbour, will offer its own unique view of life in the coastal paradise — and provide a great talking point when you next host a dinner party. The exhibition runs October 21-30, so those unable to make the festival but

passing through the city can drop in and take a look.
