RSF Library Guild readies for spring author talk By Christina Macone-Greene
RANCHO SANTA FE — Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild members will have an opportunity to meet with bestselling author Helen Simonson for an upcoming spring author talk slated for April 1. Simonson is best known for her novel, “Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand,” and is delighted to present her newest work to the Guild, “The Summer Before the War.” According to Susan Appleby, executive director of the RSF Library Guild, the event will afford event goers a private reception with a buffet followed by an author presentation at the library. This September marks five years that the RSF Library Guild has hosted its author talk program series. Over the years, the events have been a special occasion not only for guild members in the Ranch, but also surrounding communities. “We have the opportunity to get bestselling authors who are on their initial book tour for their releases. So they do this as a courtesy for the library,” Appleby said. Appleby also pointed out that they could not do this without their partnership with Warwick’s Books of La Jolla. Without this partnership, the Guild would be hard pressed to find these authors on its own. The release date of “The

Summer Before the War” is scheduled for March 22. On a personal level, Appleby has enjoyed the author talks. “It gives great insight into how they work and
where they come up with their ideas for their book,” she said. Appleby said that she loves to hear from authors about how they were all avid readers as children. She re-
calls how many shared that in their youth they were under the covers in bed reading a book with a flashlight late into the night. And many of these authors relied on their local libraries. To attend the spring author talk, guests must be guild members. And anyone can join. Appleby wants people to know that they can purchase tickets on their website and also become a Guild member, as well. “By being a Guild member we are supporting the library and help ensure the sustainability of the library into the future,” she said. “We can’t do it without our members.” Since the author talk inception, Donald E. Johnson of Wells Fargo Advisors has been a generous sponsor. This generosity has helped enhance the community experience. “This event gives the community access to authors on a very personal level because they’re such small scale events,” said Appleby, noting how the guest number does not exceed 50. “It’s wonderful because everyone can ask a question because it is really a lovely, intimate setting here at the library.” For reservations or to become a Guild Member visit rsflibraryguild.org or call (858) 756-4780.
