Carlsbad grad is top sprinter in the county CARLSBAD — If you follow Carlsbad High School’s sports at all, you will have heard of Justin Freedman. But you will have heard of him from someone else, perhaps someone who loves to see a fast and often very competitive 100-meter sprint. Justin, the son of Andre and Jacqueline Freeman, remains modest

about his noteworthy accomplishments on the track. A four-year varsity letterman in his sport, his dad has been right there with him as the assistant track coach at the high school. Even though he is still just 17, Justin has made a real impression with his times in the 100- meter sprint, 200-meter sprint and TURN TO SPRINTER ON B12

OCEANSIDE — The ninth annual Filipino Cultural Celebration celebrated Philippine Independence Day with music, costumes and food on June 12. Nonstop entertainment filled the main stage at the Civic Center. Traditional songs and dances were performed as well as a showcase of contemporary entertainment. Mrs., Miss, Junior Miss and Little Miss FilAm were crowned for raising the most funds to support the Filipino American Association community service work. Awards went to toddlers, teens and women 70 years old, of all ethnicities. “It’s a diverse community, everybody is entitled to join (the association),” James Viado, Filipino American Association board member, said. Scholarships were awarded to four North County high school youth who won the annual essay contest sponsored by the Filipino American Association. “Not only Filipino, but all ethnic groups can compete and write essays,” Viado said. Essays must show student leadership. “They need to be outstanding students,” Viado said. Traditional Filipino food was sold by vendors throughout the day and proved to be a big draw to many who attended. The celebration is an opportunity to share Filipino culture and history. ence from Spain and July 4, 1946, when the Republic of the Philippines was recognized as an independent nation by the United States. “My dad marched in the June 12 parade when the Philippines gained its independence and I marched in the July 4 parade,” Felix Saguing, an Oceanside resident, said. For almost 40 years July 4 was celebrated as Philippine Independence Day, then in 1964 the traditional day of June 12 was once again recognized and celebrated as Independence Day. Pie, pets and pride celebrate Flag Day OCEANSIDE — Animals, children and veterans came together to show their patriotism and civic spirit at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, North Campus to celebrate Flag Day with the raising of its new flag June 14. The flagpole standing at the animal welfare facility remained dormant for several years until a local community leader stepped forward to lead the improvement charge. Robert “Camo” Gleisberg, an Oceanside resident and retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, rallied the Kiwanis Club of Oceanside Pacific and the “K-Kids” at the Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Oceanside to help raise more than $1,200, funds which helped the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA repair the flagpole and install new lighting. The enhanced flagpole, featuring a new flag donated by Sunward Flag Company, serves as a tribute to the local community, which comprises many military service members and their families. The Flag Day celebration featured a check presentation, flag raising ceremony with the president of the North County Veterans Association, K-Kids leading the pledge and singing patriotic songs, apple pie for guests, and a visit from the San Diego Humane Society’s certified PetAssisted Therapy dogs.
