>> Workers gather to assist in fire engulfed building KAVEEL SINGH

A

FIRE on the well known Arbee Drive in Tongaat has shown the tenacity of the men and women who work in the area. The fire occurred on Thursday, 12 December in a flat at the Denbecca Centre around 10am with a grandfather and his grandson trapped in a flat on the top floor. Witnessesnoticedthefireafterblacksmoke began bellowing out of the window of the apartment. Passersby began shouting for occupants in the flat in an effort to alert them of the incident. Screams for help were soon heard by locals who rallied together to ensure no lives were lost. Muziwandile Melusi Mkhwanazi (24), who was loading tools into a van outside the electrical shop where he works, sprang into action when he heard that two people were trapped inside. Others also gathered and tried to break the door of the apartment down while notifying the authorities. Moon Reddy (69) was in his room when the fire started, while his grandson, Luade (7) was in the shower. Within minutes the flat was engulfed in smoke. Reddy said he tried to unlock the door but was overcome by the smoke and moved away. Luade stepped out of the bathroom and panicked at the sight of smoke. They both went to the lounge window to scream for help. Mkhwanazisaidwhenhesawpeopleonthe road running frantically he followed them. “Time was going. A life was going to be lost. I went back downstairs and noticed that a ladder was placed outside. Without asking I climbed up the ladder. I had no plan and had to improvise,” he said. “When I got to the window I saw the child. He had no clothes on and looked frightened.” Mkhwanazi with help from others set a ladder that was two metres short of the window where the terrified boy was waiting. With seemingly little thought for his own safety Mkhwanazi reached up to a satellite dishbracketwhilestandingontopofawindow frame on the second floor. While balanced on the frame and with one hand gripping the bracket, Mkhwanazi pulled himself up, and stood on the bracket. With the support of the bracket he put the upperhalfofhisbodythroughthewindow, and grabbed the boy. Mkhwanazi said he passed him to another rescuer, Sphamandla Dlamini (26) who was below him on the ladder. Dlamini said he, like many others, had tried to break down the gate and door to get into the flat. He had a wet cloth over his face to avoid being suffocated. Meanwhile, residents eventually broke down the door and entered the flat. Netcare 911 spokeswoman, Santi Steinmann, said the boy and his grandfather were taken to hospital. Shadrack Naidoo, building manager of Denbecca Centre said it had been an unfortunate and regrettable incident. “However we are looking into it, but I do not know how the fire had started as it left irrefutable damage to the apartment and the build-

ing.” Segree Ramkaran, a resident of Denbecca Centre. said he did not know how the fire had started. “We heard screams from the apartment upstairs, unbeknownst to myself and my husband at the time, he checked up on the occupants of the above apartment. It was a smoke ridden scene and he attempted to break the door down as he knew there had been a child inside. “A failed attempt led to the help of other members of the community who eventually brought the young boy to safety. The roof of the building collapsed later on.” An employee of Carpaint Centre, which is an establishment within the Denbecca Centre said no one knew how the fire began. “There are a lot of alleged stories, but no official cause or explanation. There had been screams heard and some people who were present at the time helped as much as they could until authorities arrived on the scene.”

What an honouritwastosharethesameisle, walking next to our hero. It was simply mind-blowing.” Yogan Naidoo, secretary of the Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum, said Mandela's life’s history can be taken up as a scripture of moral and ethics. “He can be a shining example to current and future leaders who have become blinded by self-interest and corruption. We have been fortunate tohavewalkedtheearthwithhimand witness before us the rich, noble and loft teachings of our Dharma being acted out right before our eyes through his life.” UmeshRamnanan, chairpersonof the Verton Branch of Sadtu said as teachers, “it is our duty to ensure that today’s younger generation understand and fully appreciate what was done. “It is the responsibility of the present and future generations to preserve his legacy by upholding his vision and values. former political prisoner of Robben Islandfrom1963to1974aswellasveteran NIC stalwart and former chairperson of the Release Mandela Committee, Paul David shared their personal experiences with Mandela. In his address Singh recalled the events leading to Mandela’s arrest and hisincarcerationunderharshconditions in prison. David placed in perspective the leading role Mandela played in the unfolding ofSouthAfrica’stransitiontodemocracy. A 13 minute multimedia presentation on the life and times of Mandela set the tone for inspiring messages that were to follow. Local MP Gloria Bormann said: “People have been allowed to share their own personal stories of their experience of this amazing man. His caring, integrity, honesty, humility, his love of children, his warm personality, his genuineness, have all been qualities of his life that people have talked about, but the greatest of all

has been his spirit to forgive, a rare quality indeed.” President of the Tongaat Child Welfare Society Harold Maistry said former anti-apartheid activists like Mandela was an inspiration, “even in the darkest period when we faced imprisonment and even death by the brutal apartheid security machinery”. “We sought strength and courage from the sacrifices of Madiba. Tow truck drive shot dead

December December20, 20,2013 2013

WEEKLY WEEKLY

A

35YEAROLD tow truck driver was shot and killed last Thursday night at around 9.25 pm at the corner of Hunslet and Abedare Drive, Phoenix. Prem Balram, of Verulambased Reac tion Unit South Africa, said residents near the Phoenix industrial area called the unit saying they had heard gunshots. “When we arrived at the scene we saw the victim dead on the ground.” Witnesses said a white vehicle was parked along the roadside when the tow truck drove up behind it.

The driver of the tow truck got out of his vehicle and approached the vehicle. They said a single shot was fired at the victim from inside the vehicle. “It is apparent that the witnesses saw the man turn to flee when about five to six more shots were fired at him, hitting him in several parts of his body, including the neck,” said Balram. “The victim collapsed on the road side while the suspect’s vehicle fled the scene.” It is believed the tow truck driver was called to the scene to tow a car that had broken down on the side of the road, said Balram.

WDITORIAL COMMENT

We, at the Weekly, were proud to share these emotions with you. The Weekly saw many changes this year and we would like to thank you for graciously welcoming us into your homes. Our key focus for 2013 was to focus more on YOU - sharing your

THE year started with many talking, with some ‘surprise’, that we made it to 2013 (reference to the Mayans believing that the world was going to end in 2012). The year for many has brought tons of successes and good news while others were on the other end of the spectrum.

REASON to rejoice

RAZAK’S

Citizen apathy THE article by Kaveel Singh: DEAR TONGAAT CITIZENS in the Coastal Weekly 6 December refers. It stung me like a bee because I am one of those rightly targeted by your writer. Yes, I was one of those who did not attend the special meeting of 28 November called by the Tongaat Civic Association (TCA) to discuss issues around the collapsed Tongaat Mall, owned by Jay Singh. I can think of a number of excuses why I did not attend the meeting – but my failure to be present is inexcusable. We allow the Jay Singhs of this world to continue to flourish and pros per. It is because we find it expedient to bury our heads in the sand, when critical issues concerning us are ad dressed and scrutinised by “others”. Yetallthatthese“other”peoplere quire is our presence at their meetings, so that allinclusive decisions may be taken. It is through people like myself, and the other, more recognisable activists in the town that a political opportunist is allowed to flaunt himself under the banner of the ruling party. This pathetic excuse for a councillor will shamelessly stand in front of a packed hall, with a supercilious and idi otic grin on his face, virtually begging people to acknowledge his presence with a wave. Hepretendstoknownothingabout the court injunctions against Jay Singh to stop his construction work yet, if the mall were completed on time, and without controversy. You can imagine the kind of morass our country would be in if Mr Mandela andhisfellowfreedomfightersignored the effects of the Verwoerdian on slaught, and decided to look the other way. I believe that if I can start with re assessing my attitudes towards at

SINCE 1960

tending and participating in forums designed to uplift our communities, then I think that I would go a long way. I believe that the road to equality is not absolute – it is largely dependent on all citizens getting together to rumi nate on issues of common concern. I wish I had played a greater role in making my objections about govern ment fraud and corruption known at public forums like the one organised by the TCA. Kaveel Singh is spot on when he im plies that my contributions extend as far as my armchair, because no matter howmuchIpostulatemy‘pearlsofwis dom’ among my peers, I still need to identify and support those individuals who work hard to make efforts to bring about positive changes for all of us. In his speech at the memorial ser viceforMandela,BarackObama,Presi dent of the United States, said “We, too, must act on behalf of justice. We, too, must act on behalf of peace… And there are too many of us who stand on the sidelines, comfortable in compla cencyorcynicismwhenourvoicesmust be heard.” How poignant and relevant these words are to me! I am just so sorry that Mr Mandela did not live long enough to give all the hypocrites, fraudsters and opportun ists in his organisation a hard kick on their backsides. My thanks, once again, go to Kaveel Singh for his forthrightness and can dour. His straight, hardhitting article gave me much reason for introspec tion. Sea son’s greetings go to all. Peru Naidu

GROUP of 10 very excited grade 10 and 11 pupils from PROTEC Tongaat were selected to attend the SA Air Force Young Falcon’s Academy from 6 to 13 December. The academy introduces pupils to vari

ous fields in aviation, including air traffic control, engineering, flying, navigationand technology in order to identify suitable candidates for selection into the South Af rican Air Force. The academy is a tough programme that demands discipline, academic ability in mathematics and physical science and

physical fitness. Dressed proudly in uniform the Young Falcons amazed their family and friends with their impressive marching skills at the passing our parade, which was held at the Durban Air Force Base on 13 Decem ber. A total of 50 youngsters from KZN were

selected to participate. PROTEC Tongaat is extremely proud of Grade 11 pupils Ntando Ndimande who re ceived the trophy for best overall Young Falcon. A delighted Ntando said that the acad emy was a valuable experience, which has helpedhimgetonestepclosertoachieving

his dream of becoming a pilot. “WeareextremelygratefultotheSAAir Force for giving our learners this wonderful opportunity. It was a very moving day to see these young people parading with such pride, dignity and unity,” said PROTEC Tongaat manager Marion Takis.

MEMORIAL SERVICE God saw her getting tired, a cure was not to be. He wrapped his loving arms and whispered “come with me”. She suffered much in silence, her spirit did not bend. She faced her pain with courage, until the very end. She tried so hard to stay with us but her fight was not in vain, God took her to His loving home and freed her from the pain.

IN LOVING MEMORY

No one knows the loneliness that's within us all the while, just how much we miss you, no words can ever say, we smile with others. But weep alone, in our hearts, you will always live, the dearest mother that God could give.

To the living he is gone to the sorrowful, he will never return. But to the happy he is at peace, he was a man proud and wilful, yet kind and giving. Always faithful with a joy of living, his health was frail, but his spirit was strong. He gave his all and now is gone.

Fikile Mbalula, the minister of Sport has described the 51year old’s
