WEEKLY

Local voters are inspired by the ‘beauty of democracy’ KAVEEL SINGH

T

HOUSANDS of “excited” residents flocked to voting stations in and around Tongaat yesterday (Wednesday) to cast their votes in the national elections. The Weekly visited several voting stations during the early hours of voting and met enthusiastic South Africans eager to exercise their most important democratic right. Speaking at the Seatides voting station at Seatides Library, Ram and Pam Govender, a couple who had previously left South Africa to live abroad, said they were proud to cast their vote for the second time. “We had previously voted in 2004 and then left the country for a while to work in the United Kingdom. “We are extremely happy to be back and participating in something that is historically a

major part of our heritage,” said Ram. Pam described the voting experience as the “beauty of democracy”. Twenty-year-old Lindo Kuhle said he felt a sense of pride as he cast his vote for the first time. “There are many people who gave their lives for us to participate in this process. It was an excellent experience and I hope my vote counts.” Another first time voter, 21-year-old Siyabonga Zondi, said he was overjoyed. “The process was extremely easy and it is such a beautiful day. It was absolutely perfect.” Long time voters Nicohlas van Staaden and wife Anna-lee said they were elated to be part of the democratic process. “We have done this several times and it is something that is excellent to be part of. I am glad we have this system in our country and I hope everyone exercises this right as soon as they can,” said Nicohlas. Well-known community member Nazir Sadack brought along his entire family to the voting station, saying it was important that his children understood the process. “They may not be of age yet, but my wife Raeesa and I thought it was important for the kids to see the procedure. The future of our country must be educated and understand what goes on.” SAPS sector manager for the beach area in Tongaat, Manisha Maharaj-Marie, said that no incidents had taken place in the morning.

“It is smooth sailing at the moment. Party agents have set up in their cordoned off areas and thus far everything has gone on without a hitch,” said Maharaj.

We have hosted many roadshows and door to door campaigns. “These exercises have led us to believe people are unhappy with the current vestiges of power that rule this country. African National Congress (ANC) councillor Michael Abraham said his party was expecting a landslide victory. “Locally, weknow we have done what needed to be done to ensure the majority stays with us, the people. During the last 10 years, we have proven that we have given back significantly to South Africa. “We pulled our people out of apartheid and we will continue to serve them in the best way we know how. ” Cope councillor Steven Naidoo said their preparations for the elections were extensive on the ground. “We have strengthened our structures and have had our party agents trained. We have also aimed to assist those needing transportation and have arranged for it,” said Naidoo. “I am confident we will do extremely well this year. Previously, we were a party in infancy. Salt Rock fishing tragedy MERVYN KRISHNA THE family of a Phoenix man who died of a suspected heart attack after falling onto a rock at Salt Rock Beach last week have opened up about the tragedy. Bully Govender (73) of

Longcroft was with his two grandchildrenandhis son-inlaw Kevin Naicker when the incident occurred. Naicker said they were about to pack-up after fishing formorethantwo hours when he heard his father-in-law fall and hit a rock. “As I turned around I saw him slouched on the ground. I initially thought that he had slipped and hit his head on the rock, but when I bent over towards him, he was unconscious. We tried for about 25 minutes to revive him. I administered CPR, while the boys ran for help.

“There was no blood or any head wounds, so I felt we could resuscitate him. Unfortunately there was no one around except a fisherman.” The police arrived first and then called for an ambulance. The paramedics checked his heart, he said. “When I saw the flat-line appearingon the paramedic’s machine while they conducted the heart test, I feared the worst. Theysaidhispulsewas gone and all major organs were non-responsive.” Govender was declared dead at the scene.

Reckless Credit

THEASEN PILLAY AMIDST the rising costs ofliving and economic crisis, consumers continue to fall deeper into debt. Nationally, there is an alarming increase in consumer over-indebtedness. More people are unable to meet day to day living expenses, like buying food, because the bulk of their income is spent on trying to pay off their debt. More alarming, is that large numbers of debts fall within the category of “reckless credit”, a term that most consumers are unaware of. In terms of the National Credit Act, a credit provider can only render credit to a person, after they have conducted a full and proper financial assessment. In theory, an assessment is supposed to address the following: *takingreasonable steps to assess whether the proposed consumer understands the risks and costs of the proposed credit agreement, *ascertaining the current debt and re-payment history of the consumer *clearly establishing the existing financial means of the consumer. If a financial assessment had been conducted, it can still be challenged and deemed invalid, if it is established that the credit provider did not take steps to ensure that the consumer fully appreciated the risks and costs of the agreement, or, if entering into that credit agreement would have made the consumer over-indebted. Should a credit agreement be found to be reckless, then that agreement may be suspended, or the credit provider may be forced to write off part, or the entire debt. The above relief is, however, conditional upontheconsumerhavingmadeatruthfuldisclosure of ALL material information, as requested at the time of the assessment. There are some transactions that reckless credit does not apply to, such as school/student loan, an emergency loan or a pawn transaction. The remedies under reckless credit can greatly assist families who find themselves over-indebted and it is strongly recommended that people in such circumstances, consult a debt counsellor. For a free consult to determine if you are over-indebted or are a victim of reckless lending, email: marketing@tpadm.co.za or call 031 566 3306.

BEAUTY on the outside is nothing com pared to beauty on the inside. She is filled with love, joy, hope, passion, success and devotion. She has the strength to get through

any hurdle life throws at her. She has made us who we are today. Our success is because of her. Life is much easier with her by my side. She picks us up when we have fallen. She motivates us to achieve greater things. She is my mom, my woman of the year. Twenty six years ago shecarriedmearoundfromhousetohouse in order to work. Someone once told her whilst dad was in a coma that in order to make it in life she needed to stand on her own two feet.

Winding down the holidays MAKING ice cream sandwiches, whizzing up healthy salads and learning how to use the energy saving induction hobb were all part of a the fun at a kiddies cooking demonstration at Hirsch’s last week. A group of North Coast chil-

dren enjoyed the “end-of-hols” event held in conjunction with Fine Young Cooks. “Now I can make my Mum something really special for Mother’s Day,” said Caitlin Willis as she whizzed up a chocolate ice cream sandwich with sparkles.

Namhlanje immimisile le nhlangano ayeyiphikisa kugigitheke yena kuqala esayilungu le-Minority Front neleDA,umakunemihlanganoyomkhandlu wamakhansela aseThekwini. Siyasincoma isinqumo se-ANC sokummisa ngoba itshengise ukuthi isuke iqinisile uma ithi akekho umuntuokufaneleacwasweeNingizimu Afrika. Akobe bayasithola isifundo labo abathanda ukudlisela ngokucwasa abantu bakubo, nabathanda ukubheda bethi bayancokola. “T

HE people laugh with us, cry with us, get better from sickness, or pass away. We see all the Etete community’s troubles - and joys,” says Summerhill House’s Esther Lynn. Lynn, affectionatelyknownbymostas “Gogo”, is a much-loved Etete resident and an integral member of the Summerhill House nonprofit organisation team. Many lives have been made brighter by her kindness and generosity, on her own account and through the NPO. She cooks for and feeds the people. She teaches some to sew and sell their work. She helps them get birth certificates and ID documents so they can work or obtain grants. She also takes time to pray with those who are inconsolable. Lynn has brought up 11 children in her home - eight foster children - and still helps care for numerous others. “I have always loved children, and so many of them in the community do not have enough toeatandaresickandneedhelp.Someofthem have been abandoned by their parents, or the parents are away working most of the time. I don’t have a lot myself, but I cannot turn them away.” Lynn is able to feed 50 children once a week with the help of Roberts and Chaplin’s audit department which supply Summerhill with sandwiches every Tuesday. Lynn also cooks during school holidays when the children get a hot meal each day to make up for the meal they would normally recieve at school. Funds, raised by Summerhill, also go towards getting documentation for people, school fees, taking Bibles to the community, building the Summerhill facility and more. Lynn was born and grew up on the Tweedie family’s sugar farm inland on the North Coast, and worked for the them for many years. She eventually moved when most of the family had moved away or died, and it no longer felt like home. She then got a job through her church with a family that needed help to look after their twins, and she then moved with them to

Pretoria for a time. “I will never forget, it was my first trip in an aeroplane and I was so excited and nervous, but had to be calm to look after the children,” she reminisced. She did not stay long in Pretoria, saying thereweretoomanypeopleandit“wasnother type of place”. She was unemployed for three months before getting a job, again through her church, with Summerhill founder Paula Owen about 12 years ago. Lynn has not had an easy life, having never been to school, losing her husband in 1990 and then having her home in Stanger repossessed as she couldn’t pay the instalments without her husband and she found herself homeless with 11 children to take care of. Lynn was desperate and even considered

prostitution as a solution to help pay keep her home. She decided though that a house, even one she built with her hands, was not worth her dignity. Luckily Church Alive helped her find a temporary place to live in. Lynn eventually found a house in Etete, which the Owen family helped her buy and which is now the heart of many Summerhill gatherings. Tearfully she says she doesn’t know where she would be if it was not for her employer and close friend, Paula. “Paula has a wonderful, kind heart. She has done so much for me and the community. She is very special to all of us. Thanks to her my house will be ours forever.” The Summerhill concept began 10 years ago, and was officially registered as an NPO in 2007. DALES Giants made headway in the Buffelsdale Astro Turf League at the East Coast SportingComplexrecentlybybeatingRajastanfrom Belvedere 12 goals to 6 in a league match. The match commenced at a cracking pace. It was the home team, Dales Giants who were more determined to win the game. Kyle Naidoo who used to be the main defender in the junior divisions for Chelmsford Heights F C, Tongaat Football Association and FutsalAssociationofTongaathadanoutstanding game. The first three goals were scored by Kyle himself while other goals came from Clark and Moona. InthesecondhalfBuffelsdaleGiantscontinued to impress however, it wasn’t easy this time as Rajastan regrouped and managed to change their style of play and within minutes started to score goals. Rajastan improved their tempo and attacked the Buffelsdale defence but the Giant’s goalkeeper Colin “Bolo” Naidoo pulled out some classic saves denying Rajastan any chances of getting back into the game. On Monday night Bells of Tongaat and Classic of Phoenix played to a 6 goal each draw. The local team stamped their authority early in the first five minutes they displayed good passing skills and created good goal scoring opportunities and within five minutes they were rewarded with two quick goals. However,Classic foughttirelesslyeventually scoring one goal to make the score 2-1. The complexion of the game changed in Classics favour after they could not maintain their composure and the Bells strikers Tyron andJoshuatookadvantageofthesituationand punished them with yet another two goals before the referee blew for the break. In the second half Classic was the more determined side they played their heart out but they just could not break the solid Bells defence. Classic managed to equalise and at this point it was going to be anybody’s game. Luckily Bells had the upper hand they increased the tally with another two more goals and seemed as the game was in the bag for Bells. However, Classic striker Stanton did not give he fought to the very end and managed to score twice in the dying minutes of the game. The draw was a good reflection. In the final game of the night Chelms beat Belgate 6-4. Belgate took a surprise lead in the first half leading by 3-1 but it seemed as though they were pacing themselves too fast and got tired too quickly. ThisledtotheirdownfallasChelmsrealised they were tired they started to knock the ball around and in the process they scored regularly and eventually went on to beat the Belgate team.

Your chirpy whistle and funny jokes, not forgetting that warm charming smile. We’ll always remembered, that special smile, caring heart and that warm embrace you always gave us. You being there for Mum and us, through good and bad times, no matter what, we’ll always remembered you Dad because they’ll never be another one to replace you in our hearts.

Goodbye Dad, we had to say 20 years ago on the 12th May. Having you for a Dad, and a husband was such a pleasure. Love you always.... Sadly missed by Sally Moodley & family
