Singh’s company snubs court order FROM PAGE 1

trail that starts in the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements and allegedly ends with embattled Phoenix business person Jay Singh’s business empire. In a separate but related investigation, a further R101,7 million in cash was attached by the AFU out of a bank account held by Durban-based social housing company First Metro. First Metro was in the process of acquiring the Phoenix flats owned by Singh and had already taken transfer of the properties in March 2013. This transfer, according to court papers, was also illegal. Attempts to contact Woodglaze Trading were unsuccessful.

The monthly rental collected at the flats is believed to be in the range of R2,5 million. But, according to the National Prosecuting Authority, the curator of the assets is now in control of the properties and Woodglaze should not be issuing any rental statements. According to the order granted last Wednesday, Woodglaze could face criminal charges. Theorderclearlystates,“Anypersonwhoholdstheproperty is directed … to surrender the property.” NPA spokesperson Nathi Mncube said the flats are under curatorshipandthereforeshouldbemanagedbythecurator. “As far as we are concerned, once a curator hasbeenputinplacetomanagecertainassets, they are solely responsible. Those previously managing the assets should no longer be doing so,” said Mncube. Both the NPA Durban office and the curator, Berrange Incorporated, were inundated withcomplaintsbyPhoenixtenantsyesterday over confusion of where to pay their rent. The Weekly has learnt that Berrange Inc has issued an account number for all rentals to be paid. The curators, along with the AFU, will be meeting residents at the flats today. Phoenix Tenants Association (PTA) spokesperson Mervin Govender said there are more flats in Phoenix managed by Woodglaze that they want to be attached by the AFU. “We are collecting tenant leases which we WE SPECIALISE IN : will hand over to the AFU which they have requested to help with the investigation,” said HOME AUTOMATION Govender. BEING a writer isn’t easy. At least that's what I’ve read. But some say it comes naturally and they cannot believe they get paid to do something they love so much. Yet they take the money any way. I’ll let you know my own thoughts when I become a fully fledged writer myself. One thing I do know, however, is that any good writer has to be a biblio phile. Oh, that’s just a fancy (and politi cally correct) term for a bookworm. I am it, so I can safely say I’m well on my way to being the guy who sits on his ve randa sipping cold coffee, in my multi coloured gown, flipflops, messy hair (my locks are nearing that) and jotting on my tablet (21stcentury stuff) how people’s lives are playing out as I watch them pass by, reciting punchlines to

myself for my next bestseller. For now, however, I have to deal with a matter that affects me almost every day. As a tutor, I commute quite a lot between eSikhawini and Richards BayEmpangeni and my expert famil iarity with the rolling landscape has eliminated the need to look out the window. Like any selfrespecting bib liophile I bring a book along and hope to cover a chapter or two of Walter Isaacson’s Einstein: His Life and Uni verse. Alas, my fellow commuters do not share my passion for a good biogra phy and this is evident in the wary stares I sometimes get. Just the other day I was travelling to tutor a student in Empangeni in the late afternoon. So I found an almost empty Quantum (a great coincidence if you happen to be reading Einstein) and took a seat as close as possible to the lefthand side of the taxi having calculatedthatthesunwouldbeonthe other side of the vehicle for most of the trip. As luck would have it, as I was dis covering Einstein’s extramarital rela tions with his cousin, the full taxi was finally Empangeni bound. As we sped down the picturesque N2 the hydrogen bomb that is our sun, shed some of its rays through the sun

roof (I only noticed its existence then). Needless to say, the brightness of my book compelled me to read it at an awkward angle. At last I succeeded in placing the page in the shadow of the book, alas, the page itself was then out of view. Still blinded by the book, and with a curious blue hue in my vision, I reluc tantly returned my book to my back pack and looked up at the sunroof looming over our heads. And I asked myself the very constructive question: “Who the f@3¥ puts a sunroof on a bloody taxi?” On the very same day as I entered the taxi that would take me home, I received some weird stares when I scanned the taxi's roof before asking: “J1?” AgainIsatinacarefullychosenseat but this would not be my day as the geezer who chose to sit next to me had the whiff of a small brewery, and the people in the seat behind me didn’t hesitate to ask me to keep chang ing the air conditioning from the win dow (we call it iweather in loxion slang). It is clear to me now that my biblio philiac tendencies will forever be under house arrest which is problematic in this day and age of mobility and conve nience.

ADVERTORIAL AFTER four years of producing and direct ing a "A Stem of Rose and Thorns", Marlene Ramlotchan is re opening her dance and drama tuitions, which was on hold, since the movie production. "A Stem of Rose and Thorns", scripted by Marlene, is based on a novel. The movie was sub mitted to the Durban International Film Fes tival. Marlene says her dream was to submit it for an award. “It is a relative and Proudly South African indigenous film,” said Marlene, “together with my codirectors of SD Film Production De nise Bowes, and Sizwe Zondi, we dedicated four years to this proj ect. “It took a year to teach and train about 40 youth and kids be fore we even started re hearsals. It took anoth er whole year of re hearsals, and further two years for pre and post production,” she said. “Unlike most local movies, I did not want to do DVDs before sub missions as I did not want to subject my movie to piracy before it even gets out on the market.” The movie will be in distribution by June 2014. “The award selec tionswillbedoneatthe endofMay2014andwe hoping for the best.”

Golf R 400 ROARS into Beijing New Golf launches with exceptional horsepower

The Golf 400 and (right) interior. THERE’S a new flagship Golf around and it’s making waves at the 2014 China auto showintheformoftheGolfR400concept. If its name isn’t anything to go by, the 400 referring to the horsepower value of 294kW, then its looks certainly can tell a story with its flared wheel arches and as sertive bumpers that will make any car ahead of it move out of the way. MORE POWER Volkswagen says the concept is based on the standard Golf R hatchback with its turbocharged 220kW engine and 4Motion allwheel drive. The Golf R 400 ups the an tewithanextra74kWand70Nmtakingthe power figures up to 294kW/450Nm avail able from 2400 to 6000rpm. DevelopedbyVolkswagenRGmbH,the cool guys responsible for highpower and customisation projects, the Golf R 400 us es a modified version of the engine found intheGolfR:atwolitrefourcylinderturbo charged engine. VW RGmbH said: “The extra power of the 400 helps propel the sixspeed DSG equipped version to 100km/h in 3.9 sec onds, a whole second faster than its 220k sibling. Its top speed is governed at 280km/h. The extra power comes from a turbo charger with a higher maximum charge pressure and reinforced crankcase, says VW.

TOUCH OF YESTERYEAR Each car weighs 1420kg, but the concept’s appearance has been substantially al tered. The body is 20mm wider on each side, withflaredwheelarchesthatarerem iniscent of those on the 1988 Rallye Golf G60. The car is painted in a silver metallic with a contrasting black roof and carbon doormirror caps and new sill extensions bridge the gap between the widened arch es; 19” alloy rims fill the arches.

this day, hawan and satsang are conducted for the peace of departed souls. Members of bereaved families attend Ganga Arati, participate in hawan and walk around Sivananda Ghat singing melodious bhajans and kirtans. About 1500 indigent people are fed on this day, in the name of departed souls. Sri Swami Sivananda, who initiated All Souls Day in Rishikesh many decades ago, said that feeding the poor and the prayers are “highlybeneficialandgiverealsolacetothedeparted souls”. Each year, the society observes a special All Souls Day with Maha Yajna (mass hawan) where hundreds of people gather to participate and conduct prayers for the peace of their departed family members. If members of the public would like to participate in the mass hawan, they are urged to call at Sivananda Ghat or phone on 073 0066 808. The development will also include institutional or social facilities and new and upgraded infrastructure such as roads, water, sewer and electricity reticulation. NTRIES are now closed for the iLembe Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur competition, and the action is already under way. After a successful campaign, the 20 competitors will be picked and announced in the next few weeks. The first and second screening phases have already taken place. “We have now selected 31 candidates and will be interviewing them. Thereafter we will select the final 20 whowillbegoingthroughtoTheEntrepreneur 19-Week Programme,” said

iLembe Chamber business support manager Nobuhle Funda. To get entrants involved, the chamber held road shows in Ballito, KwaDukuza and Mandeni, telling people about the entrepreneur programme. “Our applications reflect the success of this campaign. We had entries from throughout the Ilembe district – even as far as Ndwendwe,Maphumulo, andinMandeni as far as Nyoni. I think it’s accurate to say that the entire district was represented in the entries. We had a total of 113 entries. The

number is almost double to last year,” said Funda. The entrepreneur’s training programme will begin on 10 May and will go on until mid-September. In October, the entrepreneur exhibition will be held and winners will be announced. They would have each received money towards marketing and CI for their businesses by then. The event has grown exponentially since its inception under previous CEO Trenely Tilbrrok in 2011, with R500 000 in prizes secured for this year.Thecompetitionwillalsobegoing provincial.

Residents irate at no electricity

Ward councillor Michael Abraham at the ex plosion site.

KAVEEL SINGH EASTER was marred by an interruption in the electricity supply for residents in Buffelsdale, Chelmsford Heights and surrounding areas in Tongaat, over the weekend. An unscheduled shutdown took place from around 5pm on Friday, 18 April till 5pm on Saturday, 19 April. This was due to transformers supplying power to these areas being blown out. According to ward councillor Michael Abraham residents complained and the electricity department was contacted. “Large teams arrived shortly thereafter and gave expert advice that this required a major transformer installation. The old transformers had to be removed and replaced by new ones. This, of course, could not be done on the Friday as specialist operations involving a crane had to be engaged.” Abraham told residents that explosions of this nature were “unforeseen” but that “our municipalityhadtheresourcesavailabletoundertake such service delivery within a reasonable amount of time”. Abraham expressed his disappointment that residents were affected by this disaster over the long Easter weekend.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

MR JAGGANATHAN MOODLEY (STEVE) God saw you getting tired. When a cure was not to be, he closed his arms around you and whispered, “Come to me”. In tears we saw you sinking. We watched you fade away. Our hearts were almost broken, you fought so hard to stay. But when we saw you sleeping so peacefully free from pain, we could not wish you back to suffer so again. So keep your arms around him Lord, and give him special care. Make up for all he suffered and all that seemed unfair.

ICC and Buffelsdale Giants record impressive wins WEEKLY REPORTER

CC are slowly climbing to the top four spot after defeating Rajastan of Belvedere 20-8 in the Astro Turf League at the East coast Sporting Complex in Buffelsdale on Wednesday night. The soccer match began at a slow pace, however, ICC took the lead in the first five minutes after some brilliant inter passing. The score continued to rise and by the eight minute ICC scored about six goals. Despite being down Rajastan did not lose hope as they continued fighting in the 15th minute they scored their first goal thereafter scoring two more. The halftime score remained

6-3. In the second half, ICC continued from where they left as they were scoring goals regularly leaving Rajastan no chance of coming back to change the game. Meanwhile Buffelsdale Giants “A” beat their “B” team 16-8 in a nail biting clash. The first half was devoted to Buffelsdale Giants “B” although they were down by a slight margin. In the second stanza Buffelsdale Giants “A” did not waste any time after getting a tongue lashing from their management they went out and trounced their “B” sending out a message to the other top four teams that the league will not be contested easily and that they are also going for the R10 000 prize money on offer.
