Before The Big Day

Cleaning and Preservation

Whether new or pre-owned, your wedding gown needs to be clean, wrinkle-free and ready to help you shine.

Cleaning and preserving your wedding dress is very important for it to survive and look great for generations to come.

After the Big Day

Whether you want to preserve the memories that blossomed with your wedding day or you decide to sell your gown and recover some of the cost, every gown needs to be cleaned after the wedding. And if you plan on keeping your gown, wedding gown preservation by certified wedding gown specialists is essential.

Since it all starts with the dress, don’t let the memories end after your wedding night. Let’s face it. Weddings can be hard on a gown. Some stains dry up and become invisible to the eye, but keep eating away at the fabric. Keeping your wedding gown in the best possible condition should be your primary concern. We have the tools and technology to clean the gown without ruining it in the process.

THE engagement RING Prior to Official Engagement Announcement Choosing the Perfect Engagement Ring or Wedding Band for you or your Spouse.

 Clarity: a measure of the amount and variety of flaws in a diamond

The wedding bands and engagement rings you choose will be one of the most enduring pieces of your wedding day. Not only are they an important element of becoming married, but they are also a long lasting symbol of your love and commitment.

 Colour: a measure of the colour of the stone. A "perfect" diamond is colourless

Before you head to the jewellers, acquaint yourself with the finer points of diamonds, and most importantly the "4 Cs':  Carat: the overall weight of a diamond  Cut: the shape, cut, or proportions of the stone

INITIAL CONSULTATION WHAT TO BRING/KNOW:  Basic idea of style  Pictures of what you like  Whether you want matching or separate bands  What type of metal you prefer  Whether you want gemstones and what kind  Whether you would consider a custom creation WHAT TO ASK: What type of ring(s) would be best for my lifestyle?

Your occupation should influence this decision. For example, an electrician would want to consider a ceramic band because it does not conduct electricity. People with active lifestyles might want to avoid silver, which is the softest metal. Similarly, those that work extensively with their hands may want to consider getting an additional, inexpensive band solely to wear at work. How should I judge the value of a ring? The best cut reflects the maximum amount of light and gives the stone its brilliance. For diamonds, the less color a stone has, the higher its value. A stone’s clarity is affected by surface blemishes and interior inclusions, which interfere with light passage and lower its value. Finally, carats, or the measure of a stone’s weight, will influence the stone’s value.

DID YOU know? Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe… What does it mean? “SOMETHING OLD” Wearing something belonging to her family represents alink to the bride’s family. Most of the time the bride wears a piece of family jewelry or her mother’s or grandmother’swedding dress. “SOMETHING NEW” Wearing something new helps bring good fortune and success to the bride’s new life. The wedding dress, if new, fills this requirement admirably.

Photo by: Painted Fox Photography Photo by: Ramona Lam Photography Photo by: Heaton Photography

“SOMETHING BORROWED” Wearing something worn previously by a happy bride brings the new bride happiness in her marriage. Borrow a piece of jewelry, a handkerchief or part of your wedding attire from a married friend. “SOMETHING BLUE” This tradition dates back to biblical times when blue stood for purity and fidelity. In times past the entire dress was blue, then it became a blue band on the hem. Today, most brides wear blue in their garter to satisfy this tradition. “SIXPENCE IN THE SHOE” Placing a silver sixpence in the bride’s left shoe was done to bring wealth to the bride’s marriage. 14

DESTINATION weddings & HONEYMOONS Travel agents are essential when planning destination weddings. They can arrange the wedding date, time, and transportation details. They will also coordinate the trip for all your guests by getting passports, visas, and other paperwork in order. Your travel agent can help make your wedding an event you will never forget! HONEYMOON The honeymoon is the beginning of your new life as husband and wife. Where you start this new adventure depends on your likes, dislikes, dreams, budget and time constraints. If you want to travel further afield, a professional travel agent is indispensable. Whether you know the exact location of the honeymoon destination or just want to head somewhere warm, travel agents can help make sure the honeymoon plans are a dream vacation come true. These experts

can help you decide what the perfect destination may be and handle every little detail so you can relax and enjoy being together! One thing all travel agents stress is making reservations as far in advance as possible, especially if a certain destination is in mind. The best rates and best chances for availability sometimes come months in advance. For the couple that has everything, consider signing up for a honeymoon registry. Couples can register for things they want while on their honeymoon (candlelit dinner on the beach, wine tastings, massages, transportation, etc.) or they can set a dollar amount. Then, guests can purchase different items, services or excursions for the couple. With the unlimited options available for honeymoon plans, plan to take time for yourselves and enjoy the start of your new life together.

Few things can compare to the anticipation and exhilaration when you say “I do” and begin your new life together!

CHOOSING AN

officiant

INITIAL CONSULTATION What to Bring/Know:

notes

• Your wedding date • Ideas based on things you have seen • What you like / don’t like • Whether you want to write your own vows SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK How long have you been officiating? Verify that they have been in the business for awhile, have performed a number of other weddings and have a list of references for you to check. Are you able to accommodate different and/or unique traditions or requests? Make sure you will be able to incorporate your cultural traditions and that there is a way to include children or parents in the ceremony as you desire. Can we choose our own readings? Find out if you are able to personalize the the readings or if the officiant prefers to use a basic ceremony plan. A great way to personalize your ceremony is through your vows. Can we write our own vows? “Canada’s award-winning officiant service”

If wanting to do this, look for an officiant with experience in coaching couples that write their own vows. If you intend to do this, discuss your plans with your officiant so you can include any particular wording that may be necessary. Do you charge extra to attend the rehearsal or to travel? Make sure you know everything that is included and whether there are extra fees for extra services.

Most commonly there are restrictions on what can be used for the send-off (e.g., rice). Are you planning on any remodels or renovations before our wedding? Eat Drink

& BE MERRY

The ceremony makes it official, but the reception is where your friends and family gather to wish you well as your married life begins. Make it a reflection of your interests, personality and style, and show your guests a great time while you're at it. Think of the reception tables as your canvas. You can create any mood you want if you choose your 'paint' wisely. Considering serving just one or two signature cocktails along with wine and beer. Search for a recipe that works with your wedding's tone. Cutting the cake is a highlight of the reception. If you've chosen cupcakes or a nontraditional dessert, most bakers will provide a small, special cake for the traditional first cut.

OUT-OF-TOWN

guests

When planning your special day, take a few minutes to think about those special people in your life who will travel from far away to be with you on your wedding day. You will want to make their stay an enjoyable, as well as memorable, experience. Most out-of-town guests prefer not to impose on those involved in the hectic wedding schedule. Make this easy for them by negotiating a group rate with a local hotel. If you are holding your reception in a hotel, that may be the first stop to make when looking for rooms for your guests. Most hotels give discounts for groups of seven or more guest rooms. First, let the hotel know approximately how many rooms your guests will need. Then, send an E-mail to your out-of-town

guests with the hotel’s special room rate and reservation number so that guests can arrange their own reservations. Please be sure to inform your guests that they need to contact the hotel at least two weeks prior to the wedding. By doing so, any rooms that are not booked can be released and you will not be held accountable for them. Remember, hotel accommodations are a special service you can provide your outof-town guests. While allowing your guests the privacy of their own room, hotels also enable your out-of-town guests to spend time together and to easily coordinate transportation to your wedding and parties. In addition, the hotel concierge can arrange tours, shopping visits, or almost anything else your guests enjoy. This service lets your guests continue to enjoy their stay while you are off on your honeymoon.

Catering INITIAL CONSULTATION

What are payment terms?

WHAT TO BRING/KNOW:

Make sure you know deadlines and amounts due.

¨ Wedding date ¨ Venue

Who cleans up the room afterwards?

¨ Number of guests on your invite list

Find out if this is something you, the caterer, or your reception facility is responsible for.

¨ Timeline of the day ¨ Recipes you want included ¨ Need for special meals (e.g., kids menu, vegan, allergen-free, etc.) WHAT TO ASK: Will you schedule more than one wedding for our date? Most caterers can easily accommodate more than one event, but obtain confirmation your wedding will receive the attention it requires. Do you charge for extra services? Find out if the chairs, tables, linens and glassware are included. Often there is an extra charge for cake cutting and alcohol service. How many staff will be there? This largely depends on what style of dinner you serve. Do you feed the DJ, photographer, band or do I need to include in count? Typically the bride and groom should include vendors in the overall head count.

notes

34

www.theweddingexperts.net

How far do you travel? Companies work within a certain radius, and charge an extra fee for outside that radius which includes the extra mileage and labor for each staff member. What is included in the price? Catering services often offer a variety of packages with different service options: higher end packages for formal services that include china dishes; environmentally friendly packages for couples wanting biodegradable, disposable dishes; etc. Will there be a coffee station or pot of coffee on table? Will there be ice water? Have your caterer walk through every last detail with you. Will the person I’ve been working with be at our wedding? Make sure you meet the person who will be on site.

TIPPING YOUR vendors: Tipping is never mandatory (unless your contract warrants it). But if a vendor went above and beyond for you, let them know with a little extra cash.

¨ Wedding location

(indoor, outdoor, church, barn, etc.)

¨ Wedding style (formal, casual, vintage, elegant, etc.) ¨ Number of bridesmaids ¨ Idea of colours WHAT TO ASK: Am I buying a custom fit? You are not shopping for just a dress, but a fit as well. Choose a shop that will make sure you look stunning in a perfectly fitted gown. Have you seen brides pulling up their strapless gowns throughout the day? That does not happen when properly fitted by professionals.

When do they order the dress? Some shops may take the order but wait to put it through until closer to your wedding day. Make sure your gown will be ordered with plenty of time to spare. How will the dress look when picked up? Find out if the gown will be steamed or pressed, whether the shop takes steps to preserve the gown’s shape, and whether the dress bag will be roomy enough to prevent crushing.

Who will be doing the finish work and sewing? Find out if the shop does their own alterations or if they hire out the service. Does the dress leave the shop? If the gown never leaves the shop, it will stay more pristine. If you or your shop work with an in-home seamstress ask about smoking and pets.

If your bridesmaids come in many shapes and wear all different sizes, consider picking the color and fabric for the dresses and allow them to choose their own style. If un-identical dresses is not something you want, consider dresses in an A-line style which is flattering to all body types and sizes. You could also consider having your bridesmaids wear identical wraps.

WHAT TO ASK:

What is the delivery fee?

Should I order extras?

The fee varies depending on when and where it will be delivered.

Round up your guest list when estimating some service items. Is a security deposit required? How much? When is it refundable? Who sets up? Find out if you, your venue’s staff, or the rental company is responsible for set up. There is often a fee to have the rental company set up, however they know precisely how things are put together and are adept at completing it in a timely, efficient manner.

When do items need to be returned? Typically companies need items returned the Monday following the event. Is there a fee for broken pieces / or damages? Find out the rate for replacing broken pieces. Is there anything I am forgetting to order? Your professional will go over everything you might need. Commonly forgotten items include tablecloths for the gift table and cake table, glassware, and adequate power for the photobooth, caterer, and band.

WHAT TO ASK Are there references you can contact? Unless you contacted the baker based on a recommendation, it's a good idea to check with other couples about their experiences. Do you use fresh, high quality ingredients? Inferior ingredients will adversely affect the taste, so make sure your baker uses nothing but the finest. How large is a serving size? You will need to pass this along to whomever is cutting your cake so you do not run out of cake or have too much leftover.

Do they supply decorative cake knives? Some supply cake knives. As a keepsake, you may want to purchase a specialty cake serving set complete with engraved monogram and wedding date. Will the cake deliverer put the floral decorations on or will the florist? Both are able to provide the service, but make sure you pin down who is responsible so everyone is clear. How much is the deposit? Payment schedule? Make sure to have these things written down and included in the contract.

traditional FORMAL WEAR When it comes to weddings almost anything goes. Unless there is a particular theme or style, however, the groom will typically wear a suit.

This task is exclusively for the groom. Whether you purchase or rent your tuxedos or suit make sure it complements your bride and bridesmaid fashion. Traditionally the best man, groomsmen and attendants pay for their own formal wear. Their formal wear does not have to be uniform but should compliment the bridal party dress style and colour.

a group form the same store so that your styles and look are the same for everyone. Most formal wear rental stores offer package deals for the entire bridal party, saving everyone money. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How soon should we order tuxedos for our wedding? Wedding tuxedos can be reserved at any time; at least 3-4 months prior to the wedding is recommended. Tuxedo styles are selected after the Bride has chosen her dress and the color of the Bridesmaids’ dresses.

We suggest that you rent or purchase the groomsmen and attendants formal wear as

Who should wear tuxedos? Traditionally the Groom, Groomsmen, Ushers, Fathers, and Ring Bearer will all be in tuxedos. If you have Grandfathers or other extended family members attending, you might consider having them wear tuxedos as well. This way your photographer will capture some family portraits with everyone looking their very best. What is the final fitting? When is it? A final fitting is recommended so that your groomsmen can try on the actual tuxedo. It usually takes place a day or two before the wedding. Any needed adjustments can be taken care of before the wedding. When do the men have to be measured for their tuxedos? Measurements for the Groomsmen’s tuxedos should be in no later than 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding.

• Custom clothing available from • Shop NOW for shoes, vests, suspenders, bow ties, cuff links, funky socks and underwear • Rentals supplied by You will be professionally measured & fitted.

How will we order tuxedos for our outof-town Groomsmen? The tuxedos should be ordered in the city where the wedding is taking place. Members of the wedding party living out of town should be professionally measured at their local formalwear or menswear store. The measurements can be called in, sent in, or submitted online. The tuxedos will be ready for the final fitting when your groomsmen come to town for the wedding. Is an appointment necessary? If the men plan on coming in as a group, it’s a good idea to call ahead and schedule an appointment. If they’ll be coming in

WINE AND SPIRITS In addition to wine and liquor, a good selection of mixes and juices should be available. Decide in advance whether the bar is to be closed during dinner. Allow for one pound of ice per person in hot weather and slightly less in cold. How Much to Order Assume each person will drink an average of two glasses each during the first hour of the reception and one per hour thereafter. Also, consider the time of year (guests drink more in warmer weather), time of day (people drink more in the evening), and the age of your guests (people in their 20’s and over 50 tend to drink more). Many brides and grooms choose to make their own wine to save money. Give yourself some time, most wines, just like we hope for your marriage will improve and become even better with time. Red Wine - 8 - 12 months. White Wine - 8 months. Red or White? It’s a good idea to have a least 1 bottle of each for every 4 people. Tips on saving money: 1. Providing only beer and wine, soda and a signature drink can cut your bill. 2. Find a BYOB Venue - choose a site that will let you bring your own liquor. 3. Think Tuesday - are most guests local - get married on a off night (Sun-Thurs.) People tend to drink less if they work the next day.
