Before The Big Day

Whether new or pre-owned, your wedding gown needs to be clean, wrinkle-free and ready to help you shine.

After the Big Day

Since it all starts with the dress, don’t let the memories end after your wedding night Let’s face it. Weddings can be hard on a gown. Some stains dry up and become invisible to the eye, but keep eating away at the fabric. Keeping your wedding gown in the best possible condition should be your primary concern. We have the tools and technology to clean the gown without ruining it in the process.

Cleaning and Preservation

Cleaning and preserving your wedding dress is very important for it to survive and look great for generations to come. Whether you want to preserve the memories that blossomed with your wedding day or you decide to sell your gown and recover some of the cost, every gown needs to be cleaned after the wedding. And if you plan on keeping your gown, wedding gown preservation by certified wedding gown specialists is essential.

THE ENGAGEMENT RING

12 Months Before Wedding

Prestige Oceanfront Resort Sooke

Prior to Official Engagement Announcement Choosing the Perfect Engagement Ring or Wedding Band for you or your Spouse. The wedding bands and engagement rings you choose will be one of the most enduring pieces of your wedding day. Not only are they an important element of becoming married, but they are also a long lasting symbol of your love and commitment.

INITIAL CONSULTATION WHAT TO BRING/KNOW:  Basic idea of style  Pictures of what you like  Whether you want matching or separate bands

Before you head to the jewellers, acquaint yourself with the finer points of diamonds, and most importantly the "4 Cs':

 What type of metal you prefer

 Carat: the overall weight of a diamond

 Whether you would consider a custom creation

 Cut: the shape, cut, or proportions of the stone  Clarity: a measure of the amount and variety of flaws in a diamond  Colour: a measure of the colour of the stone. A "perfect" diamond is colourless

 Whether you want gemstones and what kind

WHAT TO ASK: What type of ring(s) would be best for my lifestyle? Your occupation should influence this decision. For example, an electrician would want to consider a ceramic band because it does not conduct electricity. People with active lifestyles might want to avoid silver, which is the softest metal. Similarly, those that work extensively with their hands may want to consider getting an additional, inexpensive band solely to wear at work. How should I judge the value of a ring? The best cut reflects the maximum amount of light and gives the stone its brilliance. For diamonds, the less color a stone has, the higher its value. A stone’s clarity is affected by surface blemishes and interior inclusions, which interfere with light passage and lower its value. Finally, carats, or the measure of a stone’s weight, will influence the stone’s value.

ESSENTIAL WEDDING PLANS Your wedding website is a great way to share your story it also serves as a hub for wedding-related activity, including transportation and lodging options, a basic schedule of related events and to links to your online registries. Be Dollar Wise Determine your priorities up front. What do you want? What does your fiance want? What can you afford? What are you willing to do without? Where is the money coming from? Put the budget down in writing and track it. Be Open Learn from the mistakes and triumphs of friends, family and co-workers. Ask them what they did right and what they would do differently. Be Smart Don’t get carried away in the wonderful craziness of wedding planning and fall prey to high-pressure sales tactics and too-good-to-be-true offers. Be Willing To Ask For Help Include the groom in the planning and delegate some responsibilities to him. And don’t forget, you have family and friends who can help, too. If you need additional assistance a professional wedding planner may be your answer. Be Yourself The best weddings have personal touches and are a reflection of the bride and groom. Use your creativity, interests, hobbies, and so on to add these touches. Be Relaxed On the wedding day itself, just go with the flow. If something different happens to what you expected, the chances are only a handful of people will ever know. 12

DESTINATION WEDDINGS & HONEYMOONS Travel agents are essential when planning destination weddings. They can arrange the wedding date, time, and transportation details. They will also coordinate the trip for all your guests by getting passports, visas, and other paperwork in order. Your travel agent can help make your wedding an event you will never forget! HONEYMOON The honeymoon is the beginning of your new life as husband and wife. Where you start this new adventure depends on your likes, dislikes, dreams, budget and time constraints. If you want to travel further afield, a professional travel agent is indispensable. Whether you know the exact location of the honeymoon destination or just want to head somewhere warm, travel agents can help make sure the honeymoon plans are a dream vacation come true. These experts can help you decide what the perfect destination may be and handle every little detail so you can relax and enjoy being together! One thing all travel agents stress is making reservations as

far in advance as possible, especially if a certain destination is in mind. The best rates and best chances for availability sometimes come months in advance. For the couple that has everything, consider signing up for a honeymoon registry. Couples can register for things they want while on their honeymoon (candlelit dinner on the beach, wine tastings, massages, transportation, etc.) or they can set a dollar amount. Then, guests can purchase different items, services or excursions for the couple. With the unlimited options available for honeymoon plans, plan to take time for yourselves and enjoy the start of your new life together.

Few things can compare to the anticipation and exhilaration when you say “I do” and begin your new life together.

Whether you prefer to have your wedding on one of their spectacular ships while still in port, while sailing at sea or on the stunning shores of a far off land, Princess offers packages that will be all you imagined and more. The wedding, reception and honeymoon vacation — all part of your incredible cruise package, all blending seamlessly to create a truly unforgettable event. Imagine the thrill of having the Captain of your magnificent Princess ship officiate your ceremony. Only Princess can offer the unique experience of a legal wedding at sea while sailing majestically across international waters.

Make it a reflection of your interests, personality and style, and show your guests a great time while you're at it. Think of the reception tables as your canvas. You can create any mood you want if you choose your 'paint' wisely. Considering serving just one or two signature cocktails along with wine and beer. Search for a recipe that works with your wedding's tone. Cutting the cake is a highlight of the reception. If you've chosen cupcakes or a nontraditional dessert, most bakers will provide a small, special cake for the traditional first cut.

Your Notes:

STAYING WITHIN YOUR BUDGET The average couple spends somewhere around $25,000 on their wedding-even before factoring in the engagement ring or honeymoon.

Whether you're planning an intimate wedding or a more lavish affair, one of your first steps in planning your wedding should be to set up-and stick to a basic budget. Budgeting is easiest if you have clear priorities. When you've decided on your must haves, cutting the costs becomes a snap. Though your families may elect to help you out, they are in no way obligated to do so. To keep from breaking the bank (after all, who wants to start a marriage tens of thousands of dollars in debt?), make sure you and your partner agree on your priorities before committing to anything. Building in a 5 percent cushion just in case will also save your sanity when the actual costs inevitably come in a little higher than expected.

GUEST LIST:

Your Notes:

One of the most difficult things you will probably have to do when planning your wedding ceremony and reception is to narrow down the guest list. It can be difficult to get the number of wedding guests down to a reasonable number. Here are some tips to help you create your list. Have a Limit Before you even start talking names, make sure that you have a limit of people that you can invite to your wedding. It can be far too easy to keep adding to your guest list until it gets out of control.

Avoid Inviting People You Aren't Close To Sure, at one time you may have been close to a number of people, but if you have not spoken to in years then there is no need and can be safely cut from the wedding guest list. Make Two Lists Another way that you can come up with the wedding guest list is to initially come up with two separate lists. On the one list, write down the people who you definitely want to be there. Then, on the other list, have the people who you would only like to be there. If it comes to cutting people from the list, only cut people from the second list.

A MENU FOR YOUR WEDDING RECEPTION...

Your Notes:

What do you remember the most about a wedding? Generally speaking, the answer to that question would be the bridal dress and what we ate. So, you might as well tempt the taste buds of your guests, creating a menu filled with the best of you and your region. 1. Caterer Recommendations - Talk to your caterer. Are there particular dishes that they’re known for, or that they recommend? If you’re catering your own wedding, what recipes are always a crowd-pleaser? Make sure they’re aware of the budget you’ve set. 2. Offer variety - Choose both stationery and passed hors d’oeuvres, as well as both hot and cold ones. 3. Special Touches - Ask your caterer if they can incorporate an old family recipe. Your guests will enjoy this personal touch. 4. Personal Preferences - Make sure you include foods that you love. Enjoying your wedding day is a priority, and it will help to make your menu personal. 5. Heritage Incorporate foods from your families’ heritages. Relatives and guests will bond over shared experiences. If your heritages are distinctly different cultures, consider featuring one during the cocktail hour and another during the meal. 6. Change Things Up - Think about going outside of a traditional menu. For example, some couples these days are opting for a dessert reception, rather than a traditional sit-down menu. Photo by: Creative Exposure Photography

7. Ask to go for a tasting. You’ll have a chance to sample the foods. 8. Be a Considerate Host - Ask your caterer what dietary options are available. Generally today’s couples will want to offer non-red-meat fare, as well as a vegetarian option.

Make sure you know deadlines and amounts due. Who cleans up the room afterwards? Find out if this is something you, the caterer, or your reception facility is responsible for. How far do you travel?

WHAT TO ASK:

Companies work within a certain radius, and charge an extra fee for outside that radius which includes the extra mileage and labor for each staff member.

Will you schedule more than one wedding for our date?

What is included in the price?

Most caterers can easily accommodate more than one event, but obtain confirmation your wedding will receive the attention it requires. Do you charge for extra services?

Catering services often offer a variety of packages with different service options: higher end packages for formal services that include china dishes; environmentally friendly packages for couples wanting biodegradable, disposable dishes; etc.

Find out if the chairs, tables, linens and glassware are included. Often there is an extra charge for cake cutting and alcohol service.

Will there be a coffee station or pot of coffee on table? Will there be ice water?

How many staff will be there?

Have your caterer walk through every last detail with you.

This largely depends on what style of dinner you serve.

Will the person I’ve been working with be at our wedding?

Do you feed the DJ, photographer, band or do I need to include in count?

Make sure you meet the person who will be on site.

Thunderbird Hall

What are payment terms?

Typically the bride and groom should include vendors in the overall head count. www.theweddingexperts.net

BRIDAL GOWNS INITIAL CONSULTATION WHAT TO BRING/KNOW:  Idea of budget  Wedding date  Wedding location (indoor, outdoor, church, barn, etc.)  Wedding style (formal, casual, vintage, elegant, etc.)  Number of bridesmaids  Idea of colours

12 Months Before Wedding

When do they order the dress? Some shops may take the order but wait to put it through until closer to your wedding day. Make sure your gown will be ordered with plenty of time to spare. How will the dress look when picked up? Find out if the gown will be steamed or pressed, whether the shop takes steps to preserve the gown’s shape, and whether the dress bag will be roomy enough to prevent crushing.

Photo by: Kuhl Photo Photo by: Brandy-Lee's Lens

Your Notes:

WHAT TO ASK: Am I buying a custom fit? You are not shopping for just a dress, but a fit as well. Choose a shop that will make sure you look stunning in a perfectly fitted gown. Have you seen brides pulling up their strapless gowns throughout the day? That does not happen when properly fitted by professionals. Who will be doing the finish work and sewing? Find out if the shop does their own alterations or if they hire out the service. Does the dress leave the shop? If the gown never leaves the shop, it will stay more pristine. If you or your shop work with an in-home seamstress ask about smoking and pets.

If your bridesmaids come in many shapes and wear all different sizes, consider picking the color and fabric for the dresses and allow them to choose their own style. If un-identical dresses is not something you want, consider dresses in an A-line style which is flattering to all body types and sizes. You could also consider having your bridesmaids wear identical wraps.

outerislandphotography@outlook.com www.outer-island-photography.com

Your Notes:

Can we look at your sample albums, guest books, online galleries, etc?

With that in mind, you not only need to find a photographer that you feel comfortable with but you also need to know what photo options are available and what shots should not be missed. No other vendor will have as lasting role in your wedding as your wedding photographer.

UNIQUE STYLISH CREATIVE

Look at the entire range of their work, especially for the products you plan on purchasing. Make sure the finalized product matches your style and that the images are sharp, well framed, and well lit. When do I get the digital files? Figure out how long their turnaround typically is, what recourse is available if you do not receive photos within the specified time frame, and whether you will see the photos before or after they have been touched up.

Capturing real moments as they happen

Will I have rights to the digital files? When you hire a photographer, you pay for the creation of the photography, not always the copyrights. If you are artistically inclined and want to create your own projects, find a photographer that will give you the rights. However, for most people, the kind of products they want created from their prints are so specialized that the majority return to their photographer anyway. What is the process for album design? Find out about your options, the turnaround time, the best way to choose photos, and all fees involved. How many weddings have you photographed? Talented new photographers join the industry every day, but when it comes to your wedding, you will want some one with enough of a history to be able to see prior work.

THE CEREMONY Start planning the music for the ceremony first by meeting with the officiant to discuss any restrictions, the order of the ceremony, and how music should be incorporated. Usually, couples choose music for the following parts of the service, but are not limited to the following:

• How many breaks do you require? Do you have recordings • Will you test equipment and acoustics at the venue yourself?

FLOWERS

10-12 Months or more Before Wedding

Flowers bring personality to your wedding. The colours, scents, & styles all work together to create a statement that is uniquely you.

PHOTOBOOTHS Renting a real photo booth for your wedding is a clever combination of interactive entertainment and custom made party favors.

Beautiful handcrafted wood roses • Half open roses • Short stem roses

WHAT TO ASK: • What is the fee for rental? • How many hours of photo booth ‘running time’ is included? • Is there a delivery charge? • Does a rental include an attendant during the event? • Do we get a digital copy of the photos? • Do we get custom graphics on the photos? • How many photos can we take? • Can the photo booth be delivered and installed in our venue? Photo booths vary greatly from company to company so be sure to consider what type of photo booth experience and quality is right for you and your guests. Would you like an authentic retro-style photo booth that looks and feels like the real thing or would a basic portrait making system in a box fulfill your need? Rental packages may include unlimited free photos for your guests, personalized custom graphics on the photos, a digital copy of the photos taken, scrap book services and more.

THE WEDDING CAKE cont'd WHAT TO ASK Are there references you can contact? Unless you contacted the baker based on a recommendation, it's a good idea to check with other couples about their experiences. Do you use fresh, high quality ingredients? Inferior ingredients will adversely affect the taste, so make sure your baker uses nothing but the finest. How large is a serving size? You will need to pass this along to whomever is cutting your cake so you do not run out of cake or have too much leftover. Do they supply decorative cake knives? Some supply cake knives. As a keepsake, you may want to purchase a specialty cake serving set complete with engraved monogram and wedding date. Will the cake deliverer put the floral decorations on or will the florist? Both are able to provide the service, but make sure you pin down who is responsible so everyone is clear. Do they have other rentals available? Some bakers also have candles, towers, fountains and other decorative items available to complete the presentation.

Do they deliver? How great a distance? Is there a delivery fee? Do they set it up? Wedding cakes are complex, delicate constructions that require professional handling. Usually bakers include the cost of delivery and setup, but within a limited distance. How much is the deposit? What is the payment schedule? Make sure to have these things written down and included in the contract.

CANDY BARS/ BUFFETS Candy Bars/Buffets can be used at weddings in addition to your cake. It is often used as the wedding favour, providing guests with a small bag or box to fill with candies of their choice. Using unique containers help to display and dispense the goodies, thus adding another colourful element to your wedding.

BEST TIP: PERSONALIZE YOUR WEDDING CAKE Use unique shapes ranging from basic forms like hearts, scalloped ovals, squares, hexagons, and diamonds to an ornate hat or a stack of gifts. Explore different decorating options such as icing bows, ribbons, rhinestones and swags. Incorporate flowers, votive candles, fountains, beads, lights, bows, lacework, shells, draping, and more to create a cake that fits your wedding style. Discover the world of cake toppers! Plastic figurines can look exactly like you and your betrothed; Cake jewelry such as pretty initials studded with Swarovski crystals are a nice touch; Beautiful flowers are always fresh and tasteful. 60

TRADITIONAL FORMAL WEAR 6-8 Months or more Before Wedding When it comes to weddings almost anything goes. Unless there is a particular theme or style, however, the groom will typically wear a suit. This task is exclusively for the groom. Whether you purchase or rent your tuxedos or suit make sure it complements your bride and bridesmaid fashion. Traditionally the best man, groomsmen and attendants pay for their own formal wear. Their formal wear does not have to be uniform but should compliment the bridal party dress style and colour.

WHY SHOULD YOU RENT OR BUY FROM US? • You will be Professionally Measured & Fitted. • Shoes are all instock for perfect fit. • Rentals Supplied by • GROOM’S RENTAL FREE with 4 or more paid complete rentals (See in store for details)

We suggest that you rent or purchase the groomsmen and attendants formal wear as a group form the same store so that your styles and look are the same for everyone. Most formal wear rental stores offer package deals for the entire bridal party, saving everyone money. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How soon should we order tuxedos for our wedding? Wedding tuxedos can be reserved at any time; at least 3-4 months prior to the wedding is recommended. Tuxedo styles are selected after the Bride has chosen her dress and the color of the Bridesmaids’ dresses. Who should wear tuxedos? Traditionally the Groom, Groomsmen, Ushers, Fathers, and Ring Bearer will all be in tuxedos. If you have Grandfathers or other extended family members attending, you might consider having them wear tuxedos as well. This way your photographer will capture some family portraits with everyone looking their very best.

TRADITIONAL BEAUTY, FORMAL WEAR cont'd HEALTH & FITNESS

What is the final fitting? When is it? A final fitting is recommended so that your groomsmen can try on the actual tuxedo. It usually takes place a day or two before the wedding. Any needed adjustments can be taken care of before the wedding. When do the men have to be measured for their tuxedos? Measurements for the Groomsmen’s tuxedos should be in no later than 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding. How will we order tuxedos for our out-of-town Groomsmen? The tuxedos should be ordered in the city where the wedding is taking place. Members of the wedding party living out of town should be professionally measured at their local formalwear or menswear store. The measurements can be called in, sent in, or submitted online. The tuxedos will be ready for the final fitting when your groomsmen come to town for the wedding. Is an appointment necessary? If the men plan on coming in as a group, it’s a good idea to call ahead and schedule an appointment. If they’ll be coming in on an individual basis, it is generally not necessary to make an appointment.

BACHELORETTE PARTIES & BRIDAL SHOWERS 6-8 Months or more Before Wedding

ORGANIZE WINE AND SPIRITS In addition to wine and liquor, a good selection of mixes and juices should be available. Decide in advance whether the bar is to be closed during dinner. Allow for one pound of ice per person in hot weather and slightly less in cold. How Much to Order Assume each person will drink an average of two glasses each during the first hour of the reception and one per hour thereafter. Also, consider the time of year (guests drink more in warmer weather), time of day (people drink more in the evening), and the age of your guests (people in their 20’s and over 50 tend to drink more). Many brides and grooms choose to make their own wine to save money. Give yourself some time, most wines, just like we hope for your marriage will improve and become even better with time. At least 8 weeks or more. Red or White? It’s a good idea to have a least 1 bottle of each for every 4 people.

Your One Stop Bachelorette Supply Shop

Bride & Groom Celebrations Bridal showers and bachelorette parties are usually held two months or so before your wedding, no closer than two weeks before the big day. Many showers are at homes or venues that host bridal showers and offer menus comprised of finger foods that can be enjoyed while guests walk around socializing. Some themed bridal showers include lingerie, adult boutique home parties and dance parties.

Tips on saving money: 1. Providing only beer and wine, soda and a signature drink can cut your bill. 2. Find a BYOB Venue - choose a site that will let you bring your own liquor. 3. Think Tuesday - are most guests local-get married on a off night (Sun-Thurs.) People tend to drink less if they work the next day.
