LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR V

ipingo Ridge Golf Resort, East Africa's best golf resort, will host the inaugural Magical Kenya Ladies European Tournament from 5th to 8th of December 2019. The Baobab Course at Vipingo, the only certified European Tour Course in Africa was constructed in 2005 and has since matured to become a world-class golf course and resort.

Dr Amina Mohammed, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Sports, Culture & Heritage, said: “We are pleased to host the Magical Kenya Ladies Open for the first time. lt is our hope and expectation that your participation will inspire other women to take up the sport and awaken their potential to play professionally. We warmly welcome all the players to Kenya and wish everyone a rewarding experience in our magical country.”

This tournament will be the first professional competition of lady golfers in Kilifi County but also the last event of the 2019 season. The Pro-am Tournament will take place just before the LET on the 4th of December. The tournament, which is expected to bring a field of 96 players, will be broadcasted live across the globe to millions of viewers for 4 days. The winner of the LET's Order of Merit will also be confirmed.

The Ladies European Tour (LET) is a global tour with world-class players who inspire fans and the next generation of golfers. Since its formation in 1978, the LET has crowned more than 250 different winners and 700 championship trophies have been lifted as players from nearly 30 different countries have won on the Tour. The LET operates tournaments across the continents and The Solheim Cup, which has been played 16 times biannually since 1990, has become one of the biggest female sporting events in the world.

Rugby Club & Schools Academy What did you do on Sunday 6th of October?

I

f you were at Nomad beach bar and restaurant for the fundraising Beach Sport Day held by South Coast Pirates Rugby Club, you sure had a lot of fun! About 60 men and women competed in touch rugby, full contact rugby and football. A great sunny day at the beach was enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike.

Thanks to the generous donations, a raffle and an auction the Pirates made enough money to reduce their funding gap. Being the remotest Club in the Championship League, Pirates travel costs by far exceed any other team. The fantastic donation from Sekenani Camp was won for Ksh. 80,000, where the beautiful, iconic picture donated by Barry Koenecke went for Ksh. 37,000.

Malcom Hunt said: “It is a great boost to our coming season's budget!”

The sport's key values include teamwork, fair play, respect of the rules and others, cooperation, discipline and tolerance. Given the personal and social development benefits rugby offers, increasing access and participation to youth became a priority for the Pirates.

In 2014, South Coast Pirates Academy was established, with over The Pirates were formed in 2012 from the local beach boys as a 900 youth participating until now. Working in partnership with local way to focus their interests into a healthy lifestyle. Very soon, the schools, they are probably the only club in Kenya to have invested so team, joined by local youth and volunteers, was proficient much in such a programme. enough to join the Nationwide Coast League.

Currently the Academy works with 7 local schools and trains 110 girls and 350 boys. They hope to increase both the number of participating schools as well as number of participants. The Academy runs inter school tournaments and each year picks those with the most potential to become junior Pirates. One of their players was selected for the Kenya National Team and six players attended U20's selection trial in Nairobi.

The Academy also help pay school fees: 7 players were given scholarships to a local school purely because of the rugby skills. The Pirates also bring in experts from other social areas (healthy habits, sexual health, child rights and abuse) to talk to the players.

All in all the South Coast Pirates and its founding partners are doing an amazing job. Lets support them in the coming events.

Next Contest On the 16th November they will host Northern Suburbs from Nairobi. On 30th November the Egerton Wasps visit Diani and the ďŹ nal home game of the year on December 14th brings the US International University side. All are welcome to come along and enjoy the contests.

M

o s t o f y o u a l re a d y k n o w t h e institution that is Leonardo's, sitting beneath its beautifully carved and painted wooden sign opposite Coral Beach Cottages on Diani Beach Road. Especially captured in my memories, is the beautiful wooden Range Rover that used to be parked outside, elegant and polished, enticing you to take a closer look - and then, of course, step into the restaurant alongside with its wonderful aromas wafting through.

What you may not know, is the history behind the place. Opened in 2007 by Mario, the name Leonardo's was inspired by the father of the previous owner of the place. When he took it over, all that stood there was a massive rock in an empty square, which was transformed into the beautiful restaurant we see there today. A capacious, wooden, high ceilinged, rustic haven with its exclusive wooden banquettes that can be reserved for lunch or dinner.

Mario started off his career as a diving instructor and boat builder. His arrival in Diani in 1982 had a purpose. He wanted to start a dive centre - now known famously as Diving the Crab. Not content with his first venture into entrepreneurship being a rounding success, Mario went on to start a diving village on Chale Island, as well as opening the Nomad restaurant. Finally, in 2007, Leonardo's was opened on the strip, with its proper Italian style pizza oven, a playground for children and his famous, all natural, homemade gelato.

The Italian style pizza oven is truly reflected in the scrumptious pizzas that Leonardo's churns out each day. Their crudo pizza is the stuff of legends, with almost translucent thin strips of parma ham placed generously all over the pizza lending a deliciously salty flavour to the cheesy base. The base itself is supremely thin and crispy, both adding texture to each bite whilst not taking away from the flavour of the toppings.

Today, Leonardo's is run by Mario's son, Roberto, on who's recommendation we ordered both the beef carpaccio and the spinach and ricotta ravioli (made fresh each day). Fresh, tender and gorgeously thin slices of beef sitting atop a crunchy bed of lettuce comprise the beef carpaccio, which is rich and salty yet light at the same time. Perfectly dressed with their secret dressing, the succulent beef flavour came through without being overpoweringly meaty.

The ravioli was a personal favourite. Each parcel of pasta was filled to the brim with creamy ricotta and spinach. Coating each piece, adding to the overall luxury of the dish was the butter and sage sauce, nuanced in its rich, salty yet sweet flavour.

The freshness of the pasta was obvious, judging by the tender bite of each morsel.

Finally, of course, this writer could not leave without trying the infamous gelato - wicked in its way through the addition of inches to customers hips and waistlines. The Gianduia flavour was glorious by all rights, decadent and rich, with flavours of both chocolate and hazelnut, a Nutella flavoured gelato if you will. One that I know I will find myself coming back for again. I can safely say that I am more that in love with Leonardo's. At the end of the day, it's a beautiful spot serving wonderful food - what's not to love?
