refurbished Mama Ngina Drive Park will be opened to the public from October 2019 after the successful implementation of the Mombasa County government's plans in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism to give a new facelift to the iconic facility. Senior national government officials in July after touring the project, had hinted that this year's Mashujaa (Heroes) Day celebrations, marked on 20th October, could be held in the new park. According to the Mombasa County Commissioner, Evans Achoki, the recreational park has been transformed into a world-class facility under an initiative dubbed “Mombasa Waterfront Project” at a cost of Ksh460 million. The new park is an integrated urban destination for culture, festivals, shopping, dining and relaxation. The recreational park will now have two gateways, a state-of-the-art amphitheatre, a cultural centre, paved pathways, pigeon towers, ablution blocks, leisure walk-ways, lush garden and restaurants serving the best Swahili snacks and meals. According to the contractor, Suhufi Agencies Ltd, the construction of the new park is scheduled to be complete by October, signaling a new dawn in the travel and tourism business in the coastal city. The park forecasts to receive hundreds of thousands of local and foreign tourists each year and it is expected that the facility will raise the profile of Mombasa as a tourist destination in the coast region and even attract more visitors. Coast region accounts for 65% of tourism in the country and remains the most preferred holiday destination for both Kenyans and foreigners.

Mama Ngina Drive Park which is located on the southern part of Mombasa city, overlooking the Likoni Ferry terminus, has been a major attraction to residents, foreign and local tourists who visit the park for recreation. It is a great place to unwind and just relax in cool sea-breeze temperatures away from the Mombasa Island heat. The park provides a panoramic scenic view of the Indian Ocean allowing one to watch ships sailing in and out of Mombasa Port and docking at Kilindini Harbour. One can as well go down the cliff to explore the sea during the low tide. The park which is located on a 26-acre land, also holds a rich cultural and historical heritage of Mombasa. It is reported that the park was a battlefield in the incessant Arab-Portuguese wars to control Mombasa town during medieval years. The National Museums of Kenya has been assigned a duty by the government to safeguard this national heritage under the Museums Act and Antiquities and Monument Act. After the park was gazzetted in 2004 as a historical monument, the value of this public park cannot therefore be underestimated as it provides an important understanding about the development of coastal Kenya and archaeological sites. The project to improve the facility was therefore envisaged to promote the city's historical background and culture.

Kenya's Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, avers that the transformation of Mama Ngina Drive into a modern public facility is part of ongoing efforts to restore the glory of Mombasa as a leading tourist destination. “This important park apart from its historical and cultural aspect, has to be given a facelift to attain international standards as thousands of holiday makers including Kenyans and foreign visitors go to Mama Ngina for picnic, to enjoy the scenic beauty of the sea and whiling away time to cool off from life challenges as they watch the ships sail”, Balala said in a media statement. Balala said a private company will be brought on board to manage the Waterfront Park when it is eventually opened. “We intend to enter into a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to ensure that the park is maintained at high standards as it is a world-class facility”, he said. The regeneration of the new park was commissioned by Kenya's President, Uhuru Kenyatta in January this year and again inspected the reconstruction project in July accompanied by Mombasa County Governor, Hassan Joho. The ICT ministry plans to install high-speed internet in the park to enhance communication and security surveillance. CCTV cameras will be installed to monitor movements and activities to enhance security of visitors and business property within the park. The Mombasa County government through its Tourism Chief Officer, Innocent Mugabe, has assured more than 300 businessmen who had been relocated to pave way for the refurbishment, that they will be allowed back to operate in the new premises when the park reopens. Visitors will have an opportunity to sample the Swahili heritage and culture including food and snacks when they tour the park and visit the Kilindini Cultural Centre within the park. There will also be dry massage offered by mobile masseurs, pedicurists, manicurists as visitors watch the ships and relax in the park. Families also go to congregate at the exotic spot to relax and picnic. The park offers an opportunity for visitors to see natural flora and fauna which includes the endangered baobab trees, some as old as 400 years and the rare grey heron birds.

MY NAWIRI

Superfoods & Natural Skincare Tell us about you and your brand. When did it start and what inspired you to start it? I am Louise, co-founder of MY|NAWIRI. My passion for medicinal plants, Superfoods and natural Skincare all started in 2009 while working in India and becoming familiar with Ayuerveda. In 2015, I moved to Kenya, I realized that by putting an emphasis on value added products and cash crops, we could support local farmers in terms of thriving more economically. My partners and I realised the need to bring awareness about the beneficial properties of local plants. A year ago, MY|NAWIRI (means “to thrive, to flourish” in Kiswahili) brand was launched to support Kenya's thrive in health with plant-based ingredients. So far, I can say that it is a success story!

What exactly is a superfood? A Superfood is a food or a food supplement, which stands out by its high nutritional density: proteins, vitamins, minerals, but also a lot of antioxidants. It can be integrated into your daily life to support your overall health or to target specific problems. I like to focus only on plant-based Superfoods, as they also end-up having a positive impact on climate change by decreasing the use of animal products and the use of chemically made medication.

And why superfoods are getting all attention these days? Superfoods have been used for ages, but it is true that there is a growing awareness, and I hope this is only the beginning. We are inclined to eat more and, processed food empty of nutrients, full of sugar and commonly stuffed with chemicals from fertilisers and antibiotics harmful for our bodies. Superfoods can be used as a natural alternative with a higher nutritional content and support our bodies in detoxifying. Our Superfoods are also good for the planet as we are organic and carefully making sure to have a mitigating impact on climate change. Are other products available in your collection? How do you create them? Yes, we have a natural skincare line of products with facemasks, lip-care and creams. The idea all started by looking more holistically at Superfoods: they are not only good for the inside but also for the outside of our bodies. As the product developer, I am creating the products based on the properties of the ingredients, research, and I like to use my gut feeling! Clients' specific request can also be at the source of a new product, and at the end the inspiration comes fundamentally from the willingness to provide a natural and plantbased alternative.

W h e re d o yo u g e t yo u r raw products? All our Superfoods are grown in Kwale County. The more local the better! The moringa trees are planted on our organic farms, we are working with farmers in Lunga Lunga for the Baobab fruits and Neem is simply collected in organic areas close to the farms. We then processed all the materials to powder inhouse, with care to preserve all the nutrients. Finally, we are sourcing the Spirulina from a trustworthy producer in Tiwi.

For our Skincare line, we have to look a bit further than Kwale county or Kenya to source some of the quality ingredients we require. Shea Butter comes from Ghana and Uganda and Bentonite Clay from USA. When it is available in Kenya, we get our raw materials from here of course! Like Beeswax, plenty here in Kenya, Honey from a cooperative in Shimba Hills, and Turmeric from local producers.

You say you are using the “quality organic ingredients” and sustainable products, how are you working to ensure that this is the case?

Can you tell us the benefit number 1 of each Superfood product? They all have plenty of properties, but I would say: Moringa leaf powder is an energy booster, Baobab powder supports digestive health due all the probiotics, and Neem is for sure an amazing blood cleanser. Spirulina is an incredible source of proteins (60%), with huge amount of antioxidant. Recently, Moringa root has been researched for its anti-cancer properties with positive results.

The quality of the products is at stake throughout the whole process. First, we make sure they are all organically grown, no chemicals insight on our farms or the ones of our suppliers. After, we process all the products with care for their properties and nutrients. Finally, proper hygiene is rule number one! When it comes to sustainability, we make sure to involve as many women and young people in producing our products. We also ensure that the sourcing prices are fair and that we have a neutral or positive impact on the environment.

Where can we find your products? Our products are available on the South Coast in different retail points (Diani, Msambweni) and can be deliver at your place in Mombasa. We are also present in several shops and gyms in Nairobi. You can also find us online on Think Organic and Fava Herbs. More information on retail points on https://www.mynawiri.com/selling-points What is your favourite product and how do you like to use it? I am addicted to all our products, if I have to choose one, I would say Neem because I love the feeling of cleansing, there is no other products that I know could replace this feeling. I usually just make a tea with it, in the evening after dinner. Neem is also integrated in my favourite cleansing facemask that I use over twice a week: the Neem & Turmeric Bentonite Clay Mask.

What is the best way to consume your Superfood? Can you give us examples? The best way is to love them for their benefits, and my advice is to make it a pleasant and creative habit. I am using all our products; I start the day with Moringa leaf tea and end it with Neem tea. You infuse the powder into hot water, maybe add some honey for the bitterness of Neem. Afterwards, you can integrate Moringa, Baobab and Spirulina into yogurt or in a juice. Throughout the day, you can integrate the powders in a salad, a stew or sauce. For more ideas you can check out our recipes on our website.

Finally, any futures plan to design new products? We have recently launched our new Black Coffee Line based on Kenyan Coffee, which gives an interesting new prospective to this long known and used plant. Coffee is an amazing exfoliator and has a lot of antioxidants for the skin. We are developing that line with a new body scrub and one new Superfood will be in the market before the end of the year. Stay tuned!

Kinondo Hospital Community Cooker

Disposed rubish used to cook and heat water

A

n environmentally-friendly community cooker was recently commissioned

at the Kinondo-Kwetu Medical Centre to serve the health facility and the

local community. The cooker, which cost about Ksh 3 million to construct,

is used to cook meals and boil water for patients, staff, community households and students from the nearby Kinondo Secondary School. It was officially commissioned on 22nd August by Msambweni Sub-County Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Dr. Kelvin Nduhiu.

The community cooker is a waste-to-energy technology invented and designed by Planning Systems Services Ltd (PSSL), an architect company in Nairobi. Inside

The hospital will drastically reduce its fuel costs as we will not be using cooking gas anymore after the installation of the community cooker

Harrison Kaingu, the Kinondo Hospital CEO

the cooker's chamber, disposed garbage is incinerated at 880-1200 degrees centigrade to generate heat energy for cooking, baking and boiling water. The cooker provides an alternative to using charcoal and firewood, saving the cutting of trees and depletion of forests in the area. It is anticipated that 3000 trees will be spared per year when the community cooker will be operational. Garbage is collected from the refuse disposed by the hospital and from community households. It includes both biodegradable and non-degradable waste like plastic materials and organic substances which are sorted out before they are packed and incinerated in the combustion chamber. Any materials which can be recycled is separated from the trash to be incinerated. Instead of dumping or littering their household trash, both the hospital and community members deposit their garbage at the rubbish rack next to the community cooker before they are sorted out to separate waste which is either wet, toxic or could be explosive when burnt. To encourage the locals to bring rubbish to be incinerated, the hospital's management pays them money for the amount of garbage delivered.

Kinondo-Kwetu Community Cooker project co-ordinator, Dr. Stan Kinsch, revealed that the project was a joint-initiative of Community Cooker Foundation and Kinondo-Kwetu Trust Fund with financial support from Kenia-Frenn Letzebuerg, an NGO based in Luxembourg which was represented by Jeannot Scheid. Another major partner, Base Titanium, which also provided financial and technical support, was represented by Mwanahamisi Hamisi. Kwale Plastics Plus Collectors (KPPC) and Afya Pwani Programme, though not involved in the initial planning and financing of the project, later joined in as interested partners. Initially, the community cooker was to be built at Msambweni Hospital where Dr. Stan worked as a medic in the past, but was later shifted to Kinondo after Dr. Stan obtained additional funding and technical support from Kenia-Frenn and Base Titanium. The Kinondo-Kwetu Trust Fund director, Filip Andersson, thanked the residents of the area for donating the land where the hospital and the community cooker is constructed. The area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Omari Pwesa thanked the partners for initiating the project as it would greatly benefit the local community including Kinondo Secondary School. The school is expected to reduce fuel costs as it will use the cooker to cook meals and boil water for students and staff. Harrison Kaingu, the Kinondo Hospital CEO, said the community cooker was an asset to the hospital. “The hospital will drastically reduce its fuel costs as we will not be using cooking gas anymore after the installation of the community cooker”, said Harrison adding that the cooker played a major role in the upgrade of waste management in the area. “Apart from stopping haphazard littering, it will also help in cleaning the place by paying community members for collecting and delivering garbage to us”, he said. Two staff members from Kinondo Medical Centre have already been trained in Nairobi on how to operate the cooker with emphasis on health, safety and environmental conservation. With a long-spiral aerial chimney, the cooker emits smoke from the burnt garbage high in the sky, away from the hospital premises, thus minimizing air pollution. The ash from burnt waste substance is used by the local community as manure in their farms. The cooker's dry gas emissions and ash were tested by Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) and meet the Kenyan, US EPA and European Environmental Standards for Nitrogen Oxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Furans and Dioxins emissions. Other community cookers in the Coast region have also been installed in Lamu and Mombasa counties but not in hospital premises, says Wakina.

Do not litter but dispose garbage responsibly by bringing it here for incineration. Garbage is wealth for you if you bring it here, convert trash into cash!
