Fashion PUH-LEEZE!! Floating Fashion

By Melinda Emmons

It’s February, and fashion is in between seasons for the Gulf Coast because from day to day, we don’t know if we’ll need a jacket or shorts and flip flops. So this month Fashion PuhLeeze is going to mix it up a little bit beginning with Valentine’s Day.

Like It or Hate It

Emerald City

Pantone LLC, the global color authority, has proclaimed emerald as its Color of the Year and is described as lush, lively and radiant. It is a color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony. You can bet we’ll be seeing it everywhere this year in fashion as well as in home décor. Before you turn your back on emerald green, know that this color is actually very versatile and compliments standard colors such as white, black, brown, and navy. It will also look great with yellow, orange, pink, tan, beige, and peach. A beautiful green beaded necklace will turn a plain white t-shirt into a beautiful and eye-catching look. Shoes in this gorgeous green will make your simple black dress stand out and command attention.

Whether or not you have a beau, Valentine’s Day can still be a fun day to celebrate love in general, so show your romantic spirit. Wear red since it pays homage to this holiday. But if you’re feeling more girly and red is not your color, wear pink! Here are a few tips of outfits that can be worn on this day and after: A single strand of cultured pearls complements any outfit, always finishing it by adding a touch of class, sophistication, and femininity. Pearls are extremely versatile and look classy with a simple sheath dress or colorful neon dress, a leopard print top, professional suit, and of course, a solid black top or dress. • Solid red or pink dress with an added dash of leopard will certainly put a skip in your step; • Floral prints on a black or white background is always a good choice mixed with solid shoes and handbag, smoky eyes and nude lips completes this feminine look; • Pink printed maxi dress, solid shoe and little to no jewelry makes a perfectly elegant dinner outfit; • Red accents such as shoes, clutch, lips, nails and jewelry will add pizazz to a little black dress; • Heart- or love-themed t-shirt paired with jeans and a denim jacket for a casual chic look.

Gifts from Cupid: Are you guys tired of the commercialism of high-priced dinners with set menus, red roses and expensive chocolates? This year, give something that can be worn throughout the year like a heart charm necklace or bracelet, a fun lip necklace in crystals, or a heart themed t-shirt that is in black or cream. All these gifts fit into the mood of Valentine’s Day, are appropriate to give to girlfriends, moms, sisters, teachers, and gal-pals and can be worn anytime during the year. And they just might be a little less expensive than a dozen red roses!

Remember, this is fashion, and despite that emerald green is the chosen color, designers will be showing a variety of shades to appeal to a variety of fashionistas. If you don’t feel comfortable in green clothing -but you should really give it a try -- you can still participate in this trend by incorporating the enviable shade into your wardrobe by simply accessorizing with a green purse, belt, shoes, crystal necklace, drop earrings, and bangles. And what better time to try the trendy colored jeans -- in green, of course!

Cowboy Up! Rodeo season is upon us so get ready to show off your fabulous boots! Don’t hide them under a pair of jeans; wear them with a short dress or skirt. Funky cowgirl attire has a rule of thumb and that is to never wear brown with brown and black with black. Mix it up, making your cool boots stand out. A lace dress with a colorful pair of boots fit perfectly into the mix of cowgirl chic. Convert one of your unsuspecting daytime dresses into a western outfit by adding a pair of boots and a loosely-worn blingy western belt.

If you don’t have a pair of cowboy boots, take your leather or suede solid brown or black boot and add boot bracelets in silver and turquoise. These inexpensive accessories will instantly put you in the groove. If you’re not that trendy (and I’m working hard to get you to that fun place), you can once again transform your little black dress by adding a turquoise necklace, real or faux, bracelets, fishnet hose and short booties. See how easy? A denim jacket over a camisole and a long flowy skirt will show off boots whether they are short or tall. Add a concho belt to the top of the skirt and a bent straw cowboy hat to the top of your head, and no cowboy will be able to look away. Western chic is fun. Be creative, bold, and daring and just remember: Almost anything goes as long as you exude confidence in your outfit.

Read Between the Lines Black and white will be trending this spring and summer in graphic prints. While crazy stripes, large polka dots, swirls and squares may be too busy for some, wearing a solid colorful shoe and handbag will help tone it down. This look can be fun as well as appropriate for the office or school, so don’t be afraid to pair black and white with any color under the moon, and don’t forget your accessories! There is so much going on in the world fashion and lots to talk about, so stay tuned for next month’s topics!

At Play in Paradise by Gordon Schnurr

I could see his mouth curl up in a sinister smile as he neared, profiting from our misfortune. In a moment, his momentum had carried him past us, as we’d yet to get back up to full speed. There we were, the two fastest boats on St. Croix, battling it out while the fleet watched from behind. Now was the time to deploy the most dastardly set of tactics in the island’s history of yacht racing. I motioned for Ann Marie to come back to the cockpit to inform her of our plan. Trooper that she is, she giggled in agreement and said she would convince Lora Lee to go along with it. Larry was almost a full length ahead of me, but I had the inside, closest to the wind. We were going to fake a tack, or “throw him a dummy” as it’s called, and bear off to starboard, or make it LOOK LIKE WE WERE. To block our wind, or “cover us”, he’d have to do the same. Ann Marie and Lora Lee headed to the portside rail, ready to deploy “the distraction”. Big Beard had the helm, and Tito and I readied the sheets, making it look like we were ready to make our turn. When Ann Marie yelled “NOW!!!”, she and lora Lee lifted their shirts to reveal, well you can guess what was revealed!

We could see Larry’s and his crews eyes focused on the beautiful disception we’d given him as we faked our turn to starboard. He yelled to his crew “ Coming about” and made a full tack to stay in front of us and cut off our wind. We immediately steered back to our original course and glided right past him, as he realized he’d swallowed the bait. Bested by the breast you could say, he realized he’d been duped. That was the manuever that won us the Conch Shell Regatta that year. We maintained our lead all the way to the finish line, shy of any additional mishaps. The only loss suffered were two sets of orange antlers and a couple of weeks worth of laundry. Lora Lee Bailey had been properly Baptised in yacht racing, the Amazing Rodney had miraculously fullfilled our expectations, Tito had discovered the rejuvenating qualities of rum and coconut water, Ann Marie had worked on her tanlines, and Big Beard and I had one of the most entertaining experiences of our sailing careers. I gave the trophy to Lora Lee in hopes that this would be the start of stories she would tell from her time in the islands. As for the rest of us, we’ve got more than enough to last for a lifetime.

Continued from January Issue...The year is 1992 and the hottest comedy to see is

Captain Ron staring Kirk Russell and Martin Short and of course the famous sailing vessel “The Wanderer”. By Captain Bob Edwards We immediately gutted the interior and sprayed to eliminate a zillion roaches and mites! We then pulled the 120hp Ford Lehman engine out and took it to the shop for a complete rebuild which should take about 7 to 8 weeks. As the days passed, we cut out 9 stainless tanks and removed all the plumbing, wiring and everything that had either worn out or was just not needed -- starting with her bottom, as she had 18 thru-hulls. WOW! It looked as if each time a previous owner wanted to add something to her that required punching a hole in her, sadly they did. We closed off all but 9 and replaced the old gate valves with modern day brass ball valves. Then off with the old prop as it was badly in need of a new one. We moved to the rudder. “Off with it,” I said, as it was in worse shape than we originally thought. Water logged and damaged, we cut it in half and then rebuilt it from

the inside out. After 30 days on the hard in the yard?? and a new bottom job, rudder and prop -- Oh! And all those new thru-hulls, we splashed her for a short tow over to Waterford Harbor Marina where she will stay until she’s a beautiful sailing ship once again. Once she’s back, you will be able to charter her on Galveston Bay through Windsong licensing and legal use, equipment requirements. Now how about a little history? She was built in Taipei, Taiwan in 1978 by the Formosa Boat Building Company. THE WANDERER got her name from the movie production company. Previously she was named SEA DEBORAH III, LE CHARMAY, BILLIE’S PEARL, LADE HAWK, and finally, THE WANDERER, which is the perfect name for her future life! Hollywood created an amazing interior and wonderful story about the vessel. Many people want to tour her to see the engine room, have their photo taken in the shower, and also see the carved bedposts containing the initials of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. You’ll have to visit her yourself to see what might be true or possibly a little exaggerated! Many people also want souvenirs from her such as her hand-carved doors...whatever people! One of the reasons the new owner selected Dockside Boat Repair for the re-fit was because we would modernize her but will still keep her classic historic look. Stay tuned for future before-and-after photos on her amazing transformation. - Captain Bob Edwards
