Access weather and fishing data via satellite up to 200 miles from the contiguous U.S. shoreline.
SiriusXM Marine Weather overlays directly on your chartplotter while fishing coastal or offshore waters and provides two vital services for anglers. First, and most importantly, it helps you detect, monitor and avoid bad weather without needing a cell signal. Storms can build quickly at sea, and the numerous, selectable overlay options within the SiriusXM menu lets you tailor the display to your desired level to make sure you and your crew stay safe. In addition to safety, the marine weather overlay can also help you catch more fish. Graphic displays of sea surface temperature contours and wind directions and speeds help you locate tide and current edges, and see where bait fish might be stacked up, giving you a definitive edge when trying to find the bite. With key information needed to find the locations in which fish are most likely to appear, anglers can save time and fuel while fishing.
H E R E I S W H AT T H E P R O S S AY A B O U T S I R I U S X M M A R I N E ’ S S E R V I C E S Rain during a day of offshore fishing is uncomfortable, frustrating and can ruin a trip. We continuously use our SiriusXM Marine Weather to monitor the weather pattern the night before a trip, the morning of, and throughout the day. We’ve been able to track the direction of a storm prior to leaving port and while fishing offshore. The comfort of knowing we can stay ahead of, or just behind, a fast moving storm gives us great peace of mind!
Without question, one of Team Canyon Runner’s most valuable tools is the implementation of SiriusXM’s sea surface temperature overlays on our plotters. For example, we can manipulate the SST data with a range from, say, 68 to 85 degrees. That allows the chart to recalibrate the new 68-degree water temp as blue in color and the 82-degree water temp as red. Seeing a hard, defining break is irreplaceable. It has steered our boats to the fish countless times.
Yesterday was perfect example of why I use SiriusXM satellite weather. I was charter fishing 30 miles NW of Key West knowing a front was coming. Having checked the wind barbs in the front I could see they were 200 miles away moving NW at 30mph. I was able to finish my charter and beat the front home safely and still get a full day of fishing in. Well worth the price of the SiriusXM service.

Product Review COBRA MARINE JUMPACK XL H2O The JumPack XL H2O is Cobra’s most versatile and powerful portable power source and jump starter yet. It enables you to jumpstart your car, truck, RV or marine engine and charge your mobile devices in all weather conditions. It is designed to jump start marine outboards, large V8 gasoline and diesel engines direct-from-the-battery or from the 12V port, and it is compliant with the latest safety UL standard. Most jump starters only work with cables connected to the battery. The JumPack can also jump a battery via the 12V port inside the vehicle, which means the user can stay safely inside the vehicle while the battery charges. The rugged and waterproof design makes it the perfect portable power device for any adventure. This compact unit is lightweight and powerful, with a lithium-cobalt battery that holds a charge longer and is smaller than traditional jump starters. An easy to view tri-color LED indicates the status of the JumPack and when it’s safe to start the vehicle. It runs its own self diagnostics to make sure the cables are attached properly, and if not, the JumPack will not allow itself to be used. This protects the user and the vehicle. Dual 3 Amp USB ports allow for rapid charging of two portable devices simultaneously, and it has a built-in super-bright LED flashlight, strobe and SOS LED. The unit includes jumper cables with clamps, a 12-volt charger cable, AC charge adapter and a neoprene carrying case.
Paired with video-enabled sonar units like Raymarine’s new Axoim Pro or eSeries, an Aqua-Vu underwater camera becomes the ultimate fishfinding machine. Whether it’s under ice or on open water, watching the fish and your lure in real-time takes the excitement of sight fishing to another level. It also gives obvious advantages to the angler. With Aqua-Vu, you’ll know exactly what fish is down there and be able to adjust the presentation to home in on what action triggers the fish to bite. But that’s just the beginning. All anglers know how important water temperature is to finding feeding fish. Probes equipped on the camera reveal water temperature at the depth you’re fishing, which can be markedly different from the temperature at the surface. With that information, it is easier than ever to find the conditions you’re looking for. Aqua-Vu can be plugged directly into a Raymarine sonar unit and viewed on the screen. This sonar, GPS and video combination is a powerful tool to make you a better angler, and they can all be viewed at the same time. Identify structure with sonar, drop a camera down to see exactly what it is and what species are holding on it, and then mark it on the GPS. It can all be achieved on the same unit.

In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.
ACR Electronics is making life easier and safer for boat owners with pre-packed premium boating Survival Kits. Affordably priced and ideal for any boater, the kits include essential products needed to quickly abandon ship and alert the Coast Guard. Boaters carrying one of the bags on-board will be equipped with an ACR Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) operating on the 406 MHz frequency. The beacons can be quickly and easily activated in an emergency to enable responders to identify and locate a boater in distress. The kits also contain a variety of other products including an abandon ship bag, strobe lights, signal mirror and a whistle to further help rescuers. ACR Survival Kits give you peace of mind knowing the safety of your family and crew is ensured beyond the minimum U.S. Coast Guard requirements. When time is short and there is no help in sight, boaters can grab the bag and depend on the kit for a swift rescue.
If you need compact, powerful GPS tracking, AtlasTrax MiniTrax is the system for you. The MiniTrax compact GPS satellite tracking system is only 3” x 2”. It comes battery powered, but can also be hardwired or used with a 12 volt charger. MiniTrax qualifies as a required GPS tracker for insurance companies and provides great mapping features. Alert messages are sent by email or text to notify the user of movement. A messagehandling server gives access to all trips and loved ones can check the exact boat location with the click of a mouse. With several satellite message plans available, you can also see data such as mileage, time length of trips, latitudes and longitudes, headings and speeds. MiniTrax is fully waterproof, has daily battery reports and is ideal for boats, aviation, jet skis, ATVs, RV’s, golf carts, construction and transportation equipment. The new Altasalarm audible/visual system with a 60-foot cable wrap, door hatch and canvas sensor can notify you with a loud siren if someone activates a sensor in the event of attempt theft.

Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. Similar to the 12.1” and 15.6” NavNet TZtouch2 models, the TZT2BB leverages Furuno’s award-winning network products, including a variety of NXT
and X-Class radars, fishfinders, multi-beam sonar, instruments and other sensors. Radars are available ranging from a compact, 4kW Solid-State Doppler Dome to a super powerful 25kW Open Array. For fishfinders, the TZT2BB includes a built-in dual-frequency Furuno Fish Finder with RezBoost, which creates images 4 to 8 times sharper than a conventional fishfinder. In addition to the built-in Fish Finder, Furuno has impressive add-on options that include the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar and DFF1-UHD TruEcho CHIRP Fish Finder. You can both the internal fish finder and the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar simultaneously. The unit comes preloaded with raster, vector and fishing charts for the Western Hemisphere in MapMedia’s MM3D format. The U.S. NOAA raster and vector charts are free, while the preloaded Navionics and C-Map charts are available for purchase. Furuno also provides free satellite photography for the U.S. that can be downloaded from their website. As with the TZTL12F and TZTL15F models, tablets and smartphones can be accessed via built-in WiFi, with several free apps available on both Apple and Android platforms, allowing you to remotely view and control your navigation network. Furuno continues to break new ground with their latest Black Box, the TZT2BB. The TZT2BB is perfect for larger helms to display all navigation, radar, fishfinder and instrument sensors across dual displays. For more information on the NavNet TZT2BB, contact Furuno at (360) 8349300 or visit them online at www.FurunoUSA.com.

he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. JL Audio caters to boaters who value sound quality in an onboard sound system. With the MM100 and the MM50, the company now offers the source unit to run the highest quality JL Audio sound systems for any size boat or budget. For more information, visit www.jlaudio.com.

L.L.BEAN CAMPSITE ORGANIZER No meal tastes better than one cooked out in the open around a campfire. However, around the campfire definitely isn’t the easiest place to prepare a meal. When you’re tired of using tree stumps to cook on and plastic bins to store all your gear, it’s time to look into the L.L.Bean Campsite Organizer. This portable outdoor organizer features three interior shelves for storing camp kitchen utensils, picnic gear and grilling tools. It’ll keep your gear in order, and the aluminum top doubles as extremely handy counter space. Open, this 31.5”x25”x20” pantry keeps your food and gear organized and out of the way. Folded down to just 25”x20”x4”, it’s easy to pack for the road. The Campsite Organizer is built of aluminum and 600D polyester fabric with heavy-duty hinges, so it’s tough and lightweight. It comes with its own carrying sack, making it extremely portable. Anyone who has ever spent a few nights in the outdoors knows the joys of a well-organized campsite as well as how quickly a campsite can become a jumbled mess. The Campsite Organizer goes a long way toward creating happy campers.
STORMPROOF SWEETFIRE A blazing fire is integral to the camping experience, and in emergency situations the light and heat of a good fire can save your life. The problem is, emergency situations that require a fire usually come with the same conditions that make lighting a fire difficult. With UCO’s new Stormproof Sweetfire, you’ll never be caught without a fire again—regardless of weather conditions. Stormproof Sweetfire is an entirely new take on tinder. UCO took its eco-friendly Sweetfire Strikeable Fire Starter, which is made from a renewable sugarcane waste product called bagasse, and added a proprietary Stormproof tip to create a product that’s totally reliable, whatever the weather. Stormproof Sweetfire’s unique point shapes come connected and ready to break off, and each has an integrated windproof and waterproof match head. An individual point will burn up to seven minutes, which is enough to get a fire started in any conditions. Whether you’re building a campfire to sit around in the evening or if it’s a fire to stave off hypothermia, you’ll be glad to have Stormproof Sweetfire when it’s wet outside.

POPTICALS POP-OUT SUNGLASSES
Good sunglasses are a necessity whenever you’re spending time outside. On the boat or streamside at a campsite, the gritty dampness of the outdoors combined with poor packing and storage options can wreak havoc on expensive, high-quality lenses. Popticals takes packing and storage issues out of the equation with premium quality and stylish shades that fold down to a compact size to fit into a protective case that is small enough to be slipped in a pocket or clipped to just about anything with an attached carabiner. They are the perfect sunglasses for camping because you’ll never have to worry about them being damaged when they’re not on your face. And when packing space is at a premium, Popticals’ small profile and light weight means they’ll be out of the way yet easily accessible. Featuring NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, Popticals are high-perfomance polarized sunglasses. Nylon offers the same clarity of glass but weighs much less, which makes them more comfortable. Backpackers, who are always looking for ways to shave weight, will appreciate how light they are.

alter had just returned from 30 days in Worcester, Mass., helping insured residents with their claims from the most recent bomb cyclone that hit the region. He and his fishing partner of 25-plus years, Kathy, a Dwyer High School geometry teacher, decided to go trolling for dolphin. They headed out the Lake Worth Inlet at 7 a.m. due east at 7 to 8 mph, trolling a pair of small, naked single-hooked ballyhoo and a tuna feather in their 2001, 25-foot Target with a Yamaha 250. It was a beautiful day on the water, with calm seas and a small ground swell. They were about 16 miles offshore when Walter saw a bill slap at the bait rigged on a 4/0 Penn Offshore Senator, loaded with 30-lb. Ande high-vis line. A school of bait had passed under the boat just moments before. Walter let the line free spool and then set the hook. The fish sounded and peeled off all but about 50 yards of line. Kathy quickly cleared the other lines and went chasing after the fish, while Walter recovered line. The fish came back up and jumped within 300 yards of the boat – a beautiful marlin! It jumped and thrashed about, then sounded again, stripping the reel of line. This time, phone in hand, Kathy chased down the marlin with Walter cranking on the Penn reel giving the Star Rod Deluxe a workout. They were able to pull up alongside the marlin, snapping a few photos in the water, before the marlin would swim away. The next round, the marlin did a triple jump right off the bow of the boat. As the fish arced the vessel, Kathy quickly snapped off several pictures… of herself. She had accidently switched the view of the camera. The struggle continued for four hours, with the marlin circling to the left—Nascar formation, peeling off line and Walter reeling it back in at least 30 times. As the fish would get close enough to see the white bottom of the Target boat, it would stripe up with markings a foot tall. Walter estimated the tail to be at least 4-feet and the marlin to be 10 to 12 feet in length. Kathy took the fight for a brief 15-20 minutes, giving Walter a break. She held her own with the marlin. They had drifted with the current about 26 miles offshore and north when the marlin made one last pass. Walter reeled the line until the swivel was about 3 feet from the tip of the rod when the knot broke. The marlin swam off with a bit of leader and a circle hook. Walter looked at the Ande line. It had stretched to the point that the color changed, but it never broke. That Feb. 17, 2018 will be a fishing trip the Mulfords, of Palm Beach Gardens, will not forget. CA Florida STAR, the state’s largest family friendly saltwater fishing competition, is back with changes that will make the 2018 event the best ever. This 101-day fishing event, presented by Yamaha, is conducted by Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Florida, the state’s leading organization for marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy. With more than $500,000 in prizes, the event will run from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. During this timeframe, registered anglers who catch qualifying fish will be eligible for prizes that include a brand new truck or boat, motor and trailer packages to all-terrain vehicles, marine electronics, scholarships and more. Unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR focuses on conservation and uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources. The format allows anglers to fish on their own schedule all summer long. A “catch, photo and release” competition, STAR’s smartphone app eliminates the requirement to harvest or capture and transport fish. New details for the 2018 event include: • Kids - Continued free registration for current New Tide Members (CCA members) ages 6 – 17. • Guides - Guides are eligible to compete in their own division for Tagged Redfish and Tagged Dolphin. • Prizes in the Tagged Redfish Division include a Contender 22 Sport, a GMC Sierra, a Pathfinder 2200TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a Carolina Skiff 21 Ultra and Cottonmouth Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha. Prizes for the first two youth anglers in this division include two Carolina Skiff 16JVX CC boats, powered with Yamaha 40 HP motors and trailers. New divisions include: • Tagged Dolphin Division (mahi mahi) - a minimum of 20 tagged dolphin will be released in the state’s waters, with the first registered angler who catches one eligible to win $10,000 in cash or scholarship. • Non-tagged Redfish Division presented by Atlas Jack Plates - even non-tagged redfish are eligible for prizes. • Grouper Division - special prizes for black, gag, red and scamp grouper. • Tarpon Division presented by Humminbird - one winner of a $10,000 prize package will be determined by a random drawing of all catch photos entered in the drawing. Eligibility requirements include proper handling and resuscitation of the catch. Other STAR divisions include: • Youth Scholarship Division presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors - offering over $100,000 in scholarships from Realtree Fishing, Reel Legends Apparel, Southeastern Environmental Solutions, Talk of the Town Restaurant Group and Pasco County Office of Tourism Development. • Power Pole Conservation and Costa Kick Plastic Trash Division - assisting with data collection for potential use in stock and habitat assessment and helping with debris collection. • Lionfish Division - helping with the removal of this invasive species. • Open, Ladies, Fly, Kayak and Professional Guides divisions – targeting various species. Most division winners are determined by a random drawing, a format that encourages participants of all ages to protect and conserve Florida’s fisheries. Register early for an opportunity to win in the weekly Freebie Friday Engel Cooler Drawing! Entry fees are reasonable at $75 for non-CCA members and include a one-year membership. Entry is $40 for current CCA members. For more information on STAR or to register, visit the organization’s Facebook page or ccaflstar.com.

Bring the Heat
By Cory Gurman
S
chool is almost out, and the heat of summer is right around the corner. So what does this mean for catching fish during the summertime? Depending on your target species, you might have to slightly change your techniques to stay on top of the fish. Bass fishing during the summer can be hit and miss sometimes, but their higher metabolism coupled with the shad spawn will likely help you out with catching some nice fish. With so many waterways that hold bass, it doesn’t take much effort to make a quick trip to a nearby pond. South Florida’s Sammy Suarez, 14, started fishing a couple of years ago and has been honing her skills at catching both largemouth and peacock bass out of local canals and golf course ponds.
During the summer months, she and her dad catch really nice fish in the early mornings and late afternoons using a topwater lure like the Rebel Pop R and popping it at a medium speed. The fish in these canals and ponds regularly approach 5 pounds and sometimes exceed that. Another thing that happens during the summer is the increased growth of vegetation, which in turn brings out frogs in big numbers. To match the hatch, I like to throw a Booyah Pad Crasher at any weeds or vegetation I see and start a slow retrieve. When the bass blows up on it, make sure not to set the hook right away. Wait a second to make sure he has it, and bury the hook. There are also plenty of saltwater opportunities in the summer, speckled sea trout being one of my favorites. Finding the right place to fish for them and understanding their preferred hunting grounds is essential in securing a delicious meal. Trout are ambush feeders, which means they like to be still and attack prey as it swims by. Grass, rocks, oyster bars and docks all make for great structure where trout stage, waiting for a meal. The presence of current is important, since it is what pushes baitfish through the structure where trout are lying ready to ambush. If these two elements—current and structure—line up, you are in a good place to fish for trout. Live shrimp under a popping cork, jig heads tipped with a soft plastic and topwater lures are all good choices. Trout tend to bite better on overcast days, especially if you’re using topwater lures. Remember to try and match the hatch with whatever baitfish you are seeing in the area. These fisheries will surely make it worthwhile to get out and soak up some rays this summer, as well as to enjoy a fun family outing during the most relaxing season of the year in the great outdoors. Cory Gurman is a freshman at Ponte Vedra High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Besides reveling in the great outdoors, Cory enjoys spending time with his three golden retrievers and rooting for the Atlanta Braves. Follow him on Instagram @fishhunter1119.

each camping is an easy and fun way to spend time with family. I am fortunate to live about an hour from the beach, and each summer we take advantage of our close proximity. It’s a great place to fish, swim, sit by the campfire… and do it all over again the next day. The key to a great time is preparation. I like to gear up for two types of fishing: trout and larger game. I bring light trout tackle for throwing lures in the morning and evening. I always have a few topwaters and slow-sinking hard baits, a ¾-oz. silver spoon and a select
few slow-sinking soft plastics. I also like to bring some larger surf tackle for throwing live or cut bait at night for bull reds and sharks. A cast net is always good to have for when schools of bait are within range. A good tip if you decide to catch or buy live bait is to bring something along to tie your bait bucket to and leave it in the surf. We typically have a breeze to keep the bugs somewhat at bay, but always bring your repellant and long sleeves to keep you comfortable. When it comes to the kids, I always ask them what they want to bring for fun and food. I don’t skimp on either of these, and I usually go overboard to make sure we all have a great time. We also love the campfire, so I always bring ample amounts of wood. It can be tough, if not impossible, to find on the beach. To combat the hassle of starting a fire in the wind, I like to use readyto-light charcoal. This saves time and aggravation. I place a full bag of it on the bottom and build up the fire wood around it. Always bring a shovel to dig a pit, as this helps contain the fire and it also protects it from the wind. A pit also allows you to quickly bury the evidence of your fire when you’re done. This keeps our beaches looking pristine, and in Texas we are allowed to drive on many beaches. Covering up your hole is important so that no one accidentally drives into it. Lastly, we all know the down side of beachgoing is bringing the sand home. One thing I started doing a few years ago with my boys is to fill a large 120-quart cooler with warm water. When it’s time to get cleaned up, they jump in, have a warm comfortable bath and clean up. They absolutely love it! Warm water is around the corner, get out and enjoy with your family! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

aving recently had an annual eye check-up with my optometrist, I learned that I might need cataract surgery in another year or so. I thought it would be sooner because my twin brother had such surgery several years ago. I asked my doctor how twins could have such different prognoses about cataracts, and he told me that it greatly depends on the amount of sun exposure one has had. I have fished and boated much of my adult life, but my twin brother had far more sun exposure from years of boating and especially playing tennis. That got me thinking about which medical issues fishermen face. I know that unprotected exposure to ultraviolet light is the most common preventable risk factor for skin cancer and that fishermen who don’t cover up are very susceptible to such skin cancers. I also know that more and more of my fishermen friends lather up and cover up. The photo here shows a wise fisherman nicely covered up. I also know that poor diet habits, the use of tobacco and alcohol, and the lack of physical activity cause major health problems for everyone, including fishermen. Many Americans, of course, are too heavy. Fishermen on long trips, for example in the Gulf to the so-called Florida Middle Grounds about a hundred miles off our northwestern coast, want to get as much fishing done as possible and therefore may neglect good eating habits while on the fishing site, sticking to sandwiches and lots of coffee. One of my fishing friends developed a hernia by not using a harness or support while reeling in a very heavy fish, and another boating friend fell overboard when not securely holding onto a deck handle. And the long hours that professional fishermen spend at their job can lead to fatigue-related accidents. One study indicated that as many as 40 percent of exhausted fishermen had fallen asleep at the wheel of their boat. A report from Denmark indicated that the accident rate for fishermen was 30 times higher than the rate for those employed on land. And
4 NORTH FLORIDA

that the death rate for fishermen in the United States was 40 times the national average and even 16 times higher than the occupations of firefighter and policeman. Having risked carpal tunnel syndrome by repetitive reel-winding while fishing for heavy halibut in very deep depths in Alaska, I have discovered the benefits of electric saltwater fishing reels when fishing the depths. Anyway, I need to be more aware of health issues while enjoying these beautiful days of fishing. Perhaps you do too? Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz
T
he spring run should be on the go before the ink dries on this report. Warm weather and fairly calm skies should have the fish wide open. The big rocks at Mayport will hold good numbers of sheepshead, reds, drum, trout, blues, jacks, ringtails, and Spanish. Throw lures early in the clear clean water before the boat traffic shows will produce some really nice trout and reds. My go to baits are the gulp swimming minnow, mirror lure, and a bomber long-a. Go early or stay late when things are quiet seems to produce the better results. Fresh live bait like fiddler crabs, shrimp, mud minnows, finger mullet thrown on jigs are almost a guarantee that you’ll get a strike. Look for diving birds to locate schools of pogies/menhaden. Get out the cast net for a live well full and the fish will hammer these with a vengeance. Again, I really look for clean outgoing water or incoming for the better bite of fish. These fish have been cold and are eager to feed on this weather change. Sheephead , reds, drum, and ringtails will devour the fiddler baits. Trout, blues, jacks, reds ,and Spanish love those fish baits. Float
rigs are a great method for taking fish at the rocks too worked on the clean tide changes when the water is the clearest. Find that clean water and you will locate the fish. The huge black drum should hang around for the month but as it gets hot the number will drop. Remember to release these big bruins but, find them in deep water by soaking ¼ blue crab chunks on the bottom at the end of both rock piles. Spanish will feed in good numbers around the inlet at high tide and can be caught with small Clark spoons or sea hawks trolled or thrown and pulled quickly thru the water. Oh, and those bait pods that are off the beach… make sure you check them for bull reds, cobia, and huge jacks for some fun in the sun. Grab a few baits from the pod and pitch them back into the foray using an egg sinker rig, big jig, or a Cajun thunder float and watch out! Make sure you bring big rods and small ones cause anything can happen, be prepared for battle! The offshore scene will start to heat up as bait moves in on the reefs and wrecks. This change will bring in the striking fish. Look for cobia, sharks, cuda’s, sailfish, and bonita to follow. Grab a few baits with a Sabiki rig and either troll or flat line these for some hefty strikes. Drop them to the bottom for snapper, cobia, grouper, sea bass, and triggers. A strong back and a stout rod is the order of the month. Check the regs for what you can and cannot keep! rtificial’s can be a great bet for all saltwater species at this time. We should be seeing all the pelagic’s around in full swing. The fun fish Jacks, Ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and maybe a Tarpon. For anglers who enjoy Topwater fishing, this can be a great time as well to get an explosive strike!! Also, in the past years this month has given up some 8-10lb Bluefish, they are only here for a very short time, a week or so and it is just luck when it happens. Not always everybody’s favorite Emma Newton with a nice backcountry catch, however it makes for redfish caught with Capt. Tony Bozzella some great action for lure fisherman and it keeps you in tune!! These species are the ones that can be caught while fishing Redfish and Trout. Remember, fish are fish, if one fish likes that area other fish will seek interest as well. You have to get out and fish and take note what tide, conditions etc. Many times when blues are in an area, Trout
are close by. Standard slip float, Jig and bait combo’s and lures all work well for these tasty and aggressive trout, Remember as the water warms with summer like temps, start your days early and use the tides to your advantage. if its low early. There will be some big trout taken as well, remember to be a good conservationist and let the big ones go, the 15 - 20 inch are your best table fare. I would recommend fishing the shallows for redfish, if the tide is high and rising, fish for trout and other species, you can always use lures and bait along grass lines and such in the back country with success. I like to have a bit more action throwing lures for different species. Many times areas will also give up some big redfish while trying to fish for trout. Often times different species will share the same areas and that is common. Flounder will be in the bag and around as a bonus and should steadily pick up as the summer progresses. Spinner baits and spoons slow rolled along grass lines and structure are a sure bet. A TBS jig combo with a mud minnow or finger mullet fished in the same area can produce. Remember to focus on moving water, bait and some sort of structure and attack your spot with a good plan……..That equals good catch! several different species are out and about, get out and get some action!!

AquaFlauge…
The Leader in Aquatic Camo Featuring Performance Lightweight Apparel By Terry Newsome
W
hen it comes to performance lightweight apparel for all types of outdoor activities, AquaFlauge is the perfect choice; and for good reason. AquaFlauge and its creators spent nearly three decades living in and around the water… and have created a lifestyle brand based on living life abundantly around our most precious natural and recreational resource; the earth’s water. The AquaFlauge lifestyle brand of apparel was born when two great friends that grew up together on the water were “fed up” with looking for apparel that was both lightweight and functional. They wanted something that not only protected them against harmful UV rays from the sun but also had style. One hot summer day while fishing the blue waters of Islamorada in the Florida Keys, they finally had it and decided to make something better for their outdoor adventures. What makes AquaFlauge unique and so superior? It is a rare occasion indeed, that I meet someone for the very first time and know instantly that they will have a profound positive impact on my life and on the world in which we live. I recently had the privilege of interviewing Aaron Moyer, President and CEO of AquaFlauge. I was truly impressed beyond measure with his extremely successful business background and his genuine passion to help people live a better quality of life! “Little did I know that AquaFlauge was not just the name we came up with that day fishing in Islamorada but would turn into a lifestyle brand that would resonate with all outdoorsmen and women” explains Aaron, “from the California surf to the Florida Keys, we’ve done it all and our skin has paid the price through unprotected exposure to the sun. AquaFlauge is the solution to looking good, feeling good and protecting yourself from the elements with the latest advancements in comfort, performance and style. We strive to bring our customers the highest performance apparel, with the best fit, the best fabric and the coolest patented designs to make life in or near the water more enjoyable.”
AARON MOYER, AGUAFLAUGE PRESIDENT & CEO Success is nothing new for Aaron Moyer. After graduating from the College of Charleston, he immediately embraced the challenges of life by becoming a purpose-driven entrepreneur. Living in Old Town, Key West, he spent every waking moment in or around water! In fact, he secured his 100-ton Master Captain’s License and continued to enjoy his outdoor lifestyle. He moved to St. Augustine almost two decades ago, continued his outdoor lifestyle and eventually started his own Graphics Design company (called SevenFins Creative.) “Initially, I was with IMG and had the opportunity to work directly with some of the 8 NE FLORIDA
CAM_JAX_MAY2017.indd 8
MAY 2018
most prestigious brands in the world” explains Aaron, “and personally worked with the PGA Tour, Rolling Stone Magazine, Richard Petty Racing and others. I was also introduced to Salt Life and became the official licensee of Salt Life Gear (hard goods division) developing 100 SKU’s in just three years.” In 2014, Aaron saw a void in the marketplace for aquatic camo and high-performance lightweight apparel. He immediately initiated a soft-launch of his AquaFlauge vision. As Aaron began to measure, analyze and improve his AquaFlauge business model, he methodically conducted targeted market research and developed a proprietary product vetting process. Aaron also conducted real time field-testing with his AquaFlauge designs and patterns to validate “proof of concept.” In fact, Aaron spent “tens of thousands of dollars” as a primary sponsor of a popular outdoor fishing show airing weekly on national television. His apparel was tried and tested by some of the best saltwater and freshwater professional anglers in the world! Based on unbiased feedback and the overwhelming positive response from professional (and recreational) anglers, AquaFlauge was ready for mass-market distribution in the US and overseas. Today, AquaFlauge is carried in 150 Retail Location Outlets. Retail “pull-through” and brand awareness continues to grow every day. (AquaFlauge is also available online at www.aquaflauge.com.) When asked about AquaFlauge “best-sellers,” Aaron was quick to reply: “We have quality products for everyone including apparel for men, women and youth. We also feature highperformance apparel and even headwear (and accessories.) The number one AquaFlauge best-seller is our Men’s Long-Sleeve Performance Shirts” Aaron explains, “and our saltwater and freshwater anglers absolutely love AquaFlauge fishing apparel. Our customers tell us that our patented high-performance fabrics and designs are so lightweight, it’s like wearing nothing at all. They also like the fact that they do not have to apply, then re-apply sunscreen throughout the day. The number two best-seller is our Ladies Yoga Pants!” What is on the horizon for Aaron Moyer and AquaFlauge? “Our goal is to continue to watch AquaFlauge explode into the US marketplace and beyond with no geographical boundaries. We are expanding our licensing division as we want everyone to experience the AquaFlauge outdoor lifestyle” says Aaron. “We are outdoorsmen and women that love to fish, dive, surf, paddle board, photograph, hunt and eat the creatures hiding within the earth’s vast waters” Aaron passionately proclaims, “and we truly value the gift of life and try and spend every moment living rather than being. To us, life doesn’t happen behind the lens of a camera or mobile phone but rather in front of it. Next time you see something amazing, don’t rush to grab your camera to capture the moment but rather live in that moment. For that is where we find the true AquaFlauge. We encourage you to escape into the great outdoors to join us in our mission and our journey.” Profound advice from a well-respected and highly-successful visionary driven by his purpose to make the world a better place for all of us. If you would like more information about AquaFlauge products, we encourage you to visit their comprehensive website at www.aquafauge. com or visit an authorized retailer of AquaFlauge products today With over 25 years of corporate experience as a writer, director and producer, Terry Newsome has personally filmed and produced over 100 outdoor television shows and instructional fishing videos internationally. He is an avid coastal angler and is a former co-owner of Pine Island Fish Camp on the Intracoastal Waterway just north of St. Augustine, Florida.

Tight Schedule By Tim Stouder
A
s I sit and write this article we are right in the middle of a two week swing. What this means is that our April event is on the 22nd and two weeks later we have our overnight camping trip. Oh and did I mention that one of our leadership team members, Matt and his lovely bride to be Jennifer are getting married the week between these events. April’s event will be recapped along with mays overnight in next month’s article. As with every event we are looking to reach more veterans and first responders as well as the volunteer community. I know all of our time is valuable and we have busy schedules but if you feel inclined to donate some of that precious time look us up on Facebook as Heroes on the Water Northeast Florida Chapter and we will get you on your way. Many people are unaware that our events are not Veterans and first responder only. We want the military person and first responder to bring their support staff. Our events are open to all veterans, retired, active duty and first responders with guests. Bring the wife, girlfriend, mother & father, or whomever you wish. For those individuals who are not as comfortable on the water we always offer shore based fishing at our events. Every event comes with a free lunch at the end of the day. If by any chance you or your company would like to sponsor one of these lunches please reach out to me directly, Tim Stouder 9049935366, and I would be happy to discuss options. Our volunteers are the life blood of our organization. Without them we could not function or hold events. I think some people shy away from our events as they don’t have kayaks and they believe that all we need are people with kayaks. This statement is the farthest thing
from the truth. We need almost as many ground crews as we do kayak guides. When the kayak guides go out with our guests we need volunteers to help setup the tables, chair, and tents, as well as help cook and serve food. As I said earlier stay tuned next month for stories from the April 22nd event and our overnight camping trip. Grand Slam Boats of NE Florida
Your Authorized Full-Service Dealer for Nor-Tech and Fountain Powerboats! By Terry Newsome
I
n today’s thriving economy, the $36 billion-dollar recreational boating and marine industries are experiencing record-breaking growth; and for good reason. What better way to enjoy your well-deserved time-off than stepping into the great outdoors for some blue-water sport-fishing action or pleasure cruising into the sunset with friends and family! There is no doubt that America loves boating! In fact, 87 million adults in the US participated in recreational boating last year and this upward trend expected to continue. Successful businessman, Mark Lacovara of St. Augustine, Florida has always had a passion for high-performance boats and off-shore “blue-water” sport fishing. For over 20 years, Mark enjoyed a highly-successful career in the automotive industry. Life was good, and he spent most of his time-off pursuing his passion for sportfishing in his treasured hiperformance 38-foot Fountain Powerboat. However, Mark’s dream was to change career paths and become a successful, full-service high-performance premium boat dealer. “I have been fishing off-shore my whole life” Mark explains “and I was constantly upgrading and tweaking my high-performance 38-foot Fountain Powerboat. I bought four new Mercury outboard motors and was having installation and rigging issues with the boat dealership I was using. So, I decided to learn how to do installations and rigging for myself and to help my friends with fine-tuning their offshore boats.” This decision was the beginning of his journey to fulfill his dream of becoming a successful boat dealer that delivers premium quality high-performance boats and world-class customer service to the Northeast Florida community. “My dream of becoming a highperformance boat dealer became a reality thanks to my close friend and business partner Phillip Mahn” says Mark. “Phillip and I were partners in boats for many years and we pushed each other to keep making the boats better and better. We bought, upgraded, and sold over 10 boats in the time we were partners and that led to us opening our business. Phillip saw how dedicated I was to make the automobile dealerships successful and insisted that I make a move to ‘own something’ in the business world. He was right, and I do not miss working for others! I look forward to growing our business to help not only my clients, but to help my employees and their families have great lives.” Phillip Mahn and Mark Lacovara are now managing partners in Grand Slam Boats of NE Florida in St. Augustine. NOR-TECH, FOUNTAIN AND MERCURY MARINE Today, Mark Lascovara is living his dream and recently announced that Grand Slam Boats of NE Florida is now an authorized dealer for the prestigious line of Fountain Powerboats. “In addition to being an authorized dealer for Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats, I am thrilled to announce that we are now an authorized dealer for Fountain Powerboats”

Mark proudly proclaims “Fountain has been one of the premiere designers and manufacturers of ‘ultra’ high-performance speed boats, sport cruisers and offshore fishing boats for decades and I am extremely excited to offer these premium quality boats to our customers. Fountain Powerboats deliver quality construction, along with optimum efficiency and performance. Each boat is designed by the finest marine designers in the world.” Mark is also excited about his business affiliation with Nor-Tech. “I absolutely LOVE the quality, design and proven performance of Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats! NorTech has been a leader in the marine industry for decades and was founded in 1989 on a foundation of quality and passion” Mark explains. “NorTech has the most complete line of custom products of any hi-performance builder in the industry. We can customize any Nor-Tech boat to satisfy the performance and comfort needs that fit your specific boating lifestyle.” In addition to being an authorized dealer for NorTech and Fountain, Grand Slam Boats of NE Florida is also an authorized full-service Mercury Marine Dealer. “I have always had confidence in Mercury Outboard motors. That’s why I put four Mercury outboards on my 38-foot Fountain Powerboat. Mercury Marine has a rock-solid legacy of delivery quality and value to their customers” Mark explains “and just look what Mercury Racing has done over the years. Mercury is known worldwide for its leadership in powerboat racing and the production of high-performance consumer and ‘race’ marine products. We are extremely proud to of our affiliation with the Mercury Marine brand.” Located at 76 Dockside Dr. #108 in the Shipyard at St. Augustine off US 1 between SR #207 and SR 312, Mark “loves his customers” and is eager for you to stop by the marina, so he can help you find the highperformance boat that is perfect for you. “If you’re ready to take your high-performance boating to the next level, we invite you to look at what Nor-Tech and Fountain have to offer. We’re confident that once you compare designs, features and performance, you’ll be convinced that Grand Slam Boats of NE Florida is the right boat dealership to turn your high-performance boat dreams into reality. Thank you in advance for the opportunity to earn your business!” For more information and directions to Grand Slam Boats of NE Florida, we encourage you to visit www.grandslamboatsofnefl.com today. Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Inshore By Capt. Tommy Derringer
T
his winter and fall the fishing has been great but summertime is coming. Yeah, it’ll be hot out there, but the fishing will be hot as well! We have some big changes in our fishing patterns coming up over the next couple of months as the water starts to get murky inshore and the beach fishing action really starts to fire off. Redfish and trout will be blasting top-water plugs at first and last light and the cobia, tarpon, and sharks will invade the beaches. You have got to love summertime fishing in Northeast Florida! Some of the best inshore/backcountry fishing for redfish and trout will occur right at sunrise and again at dusk this time of year. Top-water plugs are one of my go-to lures during those times of day. The fish will be heavily feeding, and they’ll be more than willing to crash your lure on the surface. Mullet should be invading all the creeks and flats in our area by now and the old adage “match the hatch” couldn’t be truer. I like to use a Rapala Skitterwalk in a baitfish pattern to perfectly mimic an injured mullet. If you do opt for the walk-the-dog type lure mentioned above be sure to practice making the bait walk side to side. I’ve seen many fish ignore a top-water if it’s just dragged past them, only to have them smash it the next time the lure is properly 20 NE FLORIDA

“walked” by. Once the sun is higher in the sky you may want to switch to a sub-surface lure or bait. I’ve been having great success using the Slayer Inc. SST paddle tails. It looks just like a small mullet or minnow and can fished in a bunch of different ways. The tail on the Slayer Inc. SST is bigger than most and produces quite a thump when worked through the water. With murkier water being the norm heading into summer, this can be a huge advantage as the fish will be able to hone in on the lure much easier. Just as the mullet will be invading the inshore areas look for the pogy (menhaden) pods to be all over the beach. The pogies bring in all kind of fishing opportunities this time year. The cobia should be hanging around depending on what the water temps do and the tarpon should start to show as well. Sharks, huge jacks, kingfish, and more will all be pulling up a chair to feed on the bait pods. A great way to fish the pods is to slowly idle around looking for the ones that have some pogies getting thrown around. The biggest mistake I see while fishing the beach is when anglers get too close or charge right up to the bait while the outboard motor is still on. Try using the trolling motor or just drifting within casting range. You’ll see a lot more fish and more importantly catch more too. While you’re out there along the beaches don’t forget to check out the shrimp boats and their by-catch… There’s almost always something BIG lurking around those slicks to play with! Tight Lines! Fishing Report St. Johns River By: Richard Hamilton
W
ell, this is the time of year when almost all the species in the river are biting and fighting and carrying on.
First up, Bream, Mr. Shellcracker. The Bream will be spawning and carrying on the hard sand bottoms. For those of you with the “nose” you can smell them. If you can’t, just troll from large fanned out areas in or near the grass. Pitch Beetle spins at them, crickets or worms. All three should work. Their cousin Mr. Shellcracker will be on the shell bars craving a nice juicy clam, but a nice grunt worm will also do the trick. Just start tapping your paddle on the hard shell bottoms till you locate shell bed. Then anchor up and have at it. The Warmouth should be on fire in the pads with a wide spectrum of baits available. Minnows, crickets or worms all seem to work. And remember, ounce for ounce, these fish are mean. Catfish activity will be at its best for the spring fling. They’ll be actively biting in the 6 to 8 depth. Baits of choice have been shrimp, worms, and shiners. These fish usually are aggressive and will catch a shiner. So remember the big ones are out there. Largemouth Bass should be heavy into the spawn cycle. You’ll have the pre-spawners cruising the a very happy littler angler
ends and mouths of their areas. Then you’ll have the spawners, located by the white dot on the bottom, and lastly the post-spawners. They’ll rest a little then start to feed up. Your pre-spawners will be aggressive at topwater, jerk baits, spinner baits and shiners. The spawners require teasing to bite. Cast a jig or worm in the bed. Usually you’ll get one of them to move it. Next up Mullet. They’ll be starting their yearly show with some nice ones around. So grab your bait, chum and rig and get after them. They’ll be lined up at their usual haunts waiting on you. Red Fish are here with a wide range available from the rat to the oversized. Crabs are the first choice. Look for them in the grass and along the grass lines. Stripers and the other hybrids are around the Buckman and the Shands bridges. Shiners work well as do the lipless crank baits or big imitations or plastic swim baits. Just remember to hold on! The Puppy Drum are around the pilings and deep holes. Baits are frozen bait shrimp or crabs, so go for it. The biggest surprise is the Croaker. Big Croaker. One customer had a good day with 18-22 inch fish. So get some bait shrimp or nightcrawlers and hit marker 18 on up to the Buckman and south towards Bostwick. Well, that’s it for now. ‘Til next time--Keep your line wet and your lure movin’. -- Richard R & J Tackle 501 S Orange Ave, Green Cove Springs (904)284-5081

Captain’s BBQ at Bing’s Landing
Rated “Top-10 BBQ Restaurants in the Nation” for the Past 4 Years! By Terry Newsome
N
estled in a majestic oak hammock on scenic A1A at historic Bing’s Landing in Palm Coast, Captain’s BBQ offers some of the best TRUE SOUTHERN BBQ in the entire United States! In fact, Captain’s BBQ has been rated “Top-10 BBQ Restaurants in the Nation” by Trip Advisor.com for the past four years! Proud recipient of the prestigious Certificate of Excellence Award (presented by Trip Advisor to restaurants that continually earn great reviews from travelers,) Captain’s BBQ first appeared on Trip Advisor’s National Top-10 list in 2015 and was ranked “sixth in the nation” (according to TIME. com and CNN TRAVEL.com.) Locally owned and operated by Chef Michael Goodman and Captain Chris Herrera, Captain’s BBQ delivers an amazing family dining experience you will never forget! In addition to his success as a prominent Restaurateur, Captain Chris Herrera is also one of the most well-respected charter fishing guides in the entire state of Florida. As a talented contributing writer for Coastal Angler Magazine NE Florida Edition, Captain Chris loves the great outdoors and is an advocate for protecting our natural resources for future generations. I am truly impressed with Captain Chris Herrera as he is dedicated to serving his community and is proud of his family’s heritage as one of the original founding families of Palm Coast. Rich in history, Captain’s BBQ at Bing’s Landing is in one of the most beautiful oak hammocks I have ever seen! This pristine location is part of an eight-acre park that was once part of General Joseph Hernandez’s 724acre Mala compra Plantation founded in 1816 but was destroyed in the second Seminole War. (Brigadier General Hernandez was Florida’s first voice of the US Congress.) When you visit Captain’s BBQ, be sure to view the official historical marker and archaeological dig site! Located at 5862 N. Oceanshore Blvd. on A1A (just a few miles south of Matanzas Inlet and Washington Oaks Garden State Park,) Captains BBQ is also accessible by water (29.615°N 81.205°W) just south of channel marker red “108.” Perfect for recreational boaters and fishermen who want to take a quick break for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Captain’s BBQ is open every day for your convenience! SMOKED BBQ RIBS AND NEW YORK CHEESECAKE I recently had the privilege of interviewing Captain Chris Herrera and was genuinely inspired by his loyalty and commitment his customers and the residents of Northeast Florida. “We only use the best quality meats and ingredients for our BBQ” says Captain Chris “and our premium meats and side dishes are slow cooked in our special wood burning smoker.” As a BBQ fanatic, I can personally tell you that “slow smoking” BBQ meat is a very slow, time-consuming process… but the result is worth every second of it! “Our award-winning BBQ is moist, juicy and infused with a delicious smoked wood flavor” Chris proudly proclaims “and I invite you to try our famous Ribs, Chicken, Pulled Pork, Turkey Breast and Brisket which are available daily with our popular daily specials. All side dishes are homemade including our Macaroni Salad, Sweet Corn Bread, Baked Beans and Cole Slaw.” Based on thousands of overwhelmingly positive reviews online (with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 Stars on Trip Advisor,) it is no surprise why Captain’s BBQ is rated “Top-10 BBQ Restaurants in the Nation!” In fact, 72% of 1405 reviews gave Captain’s BBQ 5 Stars! For example: “Best BBQ Around… make sure you try the cheesecake!” (Florida,) “The most amazing ribs and cheesecake!” (New York,) “Fantastic BBQ and beautiful location!” (Florida,) “The BEST BBQ EVER!” (Maryland,) “Excellent BBQ, sides and corn muffins!” (Florida.)
When asked about the most popular choices on the menu, Captain Chris was quick to brag about his business partner, Chef Michael Goodman. “Our competition style ribs are the most popular item on the menu” says Captain Chris “but we are also known for our delicious New York style cheesecake! The nickname for my partner is ‘Cheesecake Mike’ who retired from an award-winning Wholesale Bakery in New York City that manufactured desserts for famous NY Restaurants as well as national & international wholesale distributors. He was a Fancy Food Show winner in Outstanding Dessert Category (twice 1st prize and 5 times as a finalist.) Now Chef Michael Goodman is making his own recipe New York style cheesecakes with Graham Crust bottom for Captain’s BBQ! His cheesecakes are truly the best you’ve ever tasted… plus, all of our desserts are baked on premises.” Selections include: Mike’s New York Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cheesecake, Devil’s Food Cheesecake, Lemon Coconut Cheesecake and more! Plus, Captain’s BBQ also offers pecan pie, key lime pie, peach cobbler and chocolate layer cake. I also asked about Captain Chris about his homemade side dishes. “Our delicious homemade side dishes are extremely popular” says Captain Chris “and we have a wide variety to choose from including our amazing ‘sweet’ baked beans loaded with extra smoked meat. We also offer coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, cucumber salad, beet salad with feta, mac & cheese, mashed yams, buttered corn and collard greens. And don’t forget our great-tasting chili, sweet corn bread and fresh salads made daily!” Captain’s BBQ also features an impressive breakfast menu, an excellent kid’s menu and a wide variety of drinks (including domestic and premium beer and wine.) Whether you are looking for the best BBQ you have ever tasted, or you just want to listen to some awesome blues music while enjoying an amazing experience with your friends and family relaxing on the restaurant’s 1400 square-foot deck on the water, your visit to Captain’s BBQ will be an experience you will never forget! Make your plans now to visit Captain Chris Herrera, Chef Michael Goodman and the friendly staff at Captain’s BBQ today! See you there!

t’s time to pray for west winds and hit the beach as cobia will be invading our nearshore waters. Hit the beach when the sun is up and watch for cobia piggy backing on Manta rays as long as water temps stay in their comfort zone (68-72). Unpressured cobia will eat just about anything (flies to plugs) but for picky eaters keep some live bait (pogies, mullet, shrimp or even mud minnows) handy and ready to fire. Fishing at first light or last light still proves to be successful with topwater plugs. Rapala Skitter Walks, Top Dogs and Zara spooks are top water lures that has proved to be the gator trout lures of choice along with any kind of popper top water for those that cannot “walk the dog”. When the topwater bite tapers off go for subsurface suspending baits like a Sebile Magic Swimmer or lipped diving plugs

worked with a stop and go retrieve. Live shrimp and a bb split shot tossed up current along the ICW will produce trout for live bait fisherman. Redfish continue to shadow mullet seeking refuge on top of oyster beds and will be fooled by Fishbites Extreme jerk baits, gold spoons and a Sebile Stick Shadd. Bouncing jigs with shrimp or mud minnows around oyster beds will also produce good catches of reds and flounder. Slot snook are starting to show up this month, local bridges, docks and seawalls fished at night will produce linesiders. Live select shrimp, pinfish and lipped diving plugs are local favorites when chasing snook but remember to use a minimum of 30lb. leaders to avoid cut offs. Topwater enthusiast can also trick snook into biting at first light off the ICW where bait is available. Inlets and nearby creeks with drop offs will hold flatties and doormats waiting to eat a live mullet on a fish finder rig or mud minnow pinned on a jig head. Best tides or during change of tides at area inlets or outgoing tides at creek mouths. For shallow water flounder try a Slayer Inc. spinner baits or inline spinners. Spanish Mackerel, blues and jacks will invade our near coastal waters just outside of Matanzas Inlet, proven techniques for Spanish is to slow troll spoons or look for acres size schools chasing bait on the surface. It’s a great time to grab a fly rod and practice catching as spanish mackerel or ferocious eaters.. Capt. uring the warming month of May, be sure to use plenty of sunscreen, Offshore, inlet and beach fishermen will be targeting excellent fighting and delicious eating cobia during the month of May where sight fishing is often key. Hard fighting cobia will be holding close to working shrimp boats, channel buoys and close to the surf where large concentrations of menhaden are schooling. Offshore fishermen will also find cobia following hooked bottom fish up to the boat often completely catching fishermen off guard. A premium pair of sunglasses with amber lens will enable fishermen to see under the surface of the water when sight fishing for hard fighting cobia. Shark fishermen will find good numbers of pelagic sharks during the month of May both at offshore wrecks, ledges and near-shore inlets too. Some of the best shark action comes while drifting dead baits with behind a working shrimp boat that has just cleaned their catch. Shrimp boats discarding their bi-catch will also attract hard fighting tarpon, cobia and fast swimming kingfish too. Gag grouper season opens on May 1st where bottom fishermen will be targeting these hard fighting, delicious eating bottom dwellers with fairly heavy fishing gear. Fifty-pound terminal fishing line is a must! Best bottom fishing bait includes live pinfish, grunts or fresh squid. Offshore live bait trolling at the “Amberjack Hole” and “East FC” live bottoms will produce king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, cobia, barracuda and the occasional blackfin tuna. A solid game plan is to jig up a live bait-well full season opens May 1st of live Spanish sardines and cigar minnows at a nearby live bottom and rig them to your terminal trolling tackle. Redfish will be prowling the beaches offering some of the very best light-tackle fishing of the year for both light tackle spin fishermen and fly fishermen too. Simply look for large areas of surface disturbance

where red drum weighing to 40-pounds will be stocking large schools of menhaden. Excellent sea trout and redfish fishing are also available during the month of May in the back country. Timing is critical as fishing is best when a good running tide is flooding oyster beds where huge concentrations of finger mullet are present as well. A flooding early morning tide is key, particularly when arriving around mid morning.
Grouper
As days grow older the heat of the day seems to slow down the trout bite. Some of the larger sea trout and redfish are taking surface plugs fished along the edges of finger mullet schools. A local favorite is the Storm “Chug Bug” in the chrome and blue color pattern. This popular trout lure also has a sound chamber where led balls rattle against their plastic chamber, which ultimately imitates croaker grunting. Also the loud popping sounds created by the “Chug Bug”, imitates game fish smacking live shrimp right on the surface. When mullet schools are not numerous, a variety of sub surface plugs work will for summer sea trout. Include the Mirror Lure’s S25MR/ Catch 5 in the mullet color pattern. And don’t overlook casting a ¼ ounce led head jig rigged with a 3-inch Berkley Gulp shrimp in the white, or new penny color patterns. A favorite sea trout fishing pattern also includes free-lining live shrimp without weights on the deep sides of structure including jetties, boat docks and oyster beds. Surf fishermen will be targeting excellent eating whiting, pompano, yellow mouth trout and more. Fishing with fresh shrimp, or sand fleas during a flooding tide is key. Look for some of the best surf fishing action to come where shallow bars offer an ambush point for game fish. Mahi? That is the question? Where are the Mahi? Hopefully by the time this article is out they will have appeared. Usually when they have not arrived by mid-April they will be here until Father’s Day. If they fail to show up then switch to plan B.
Plan B is bottom fishing. May first is the opening of Grouper season and the best time to catch a large Gag Grouper. If Large Gags are your target then bigger is better. 80# class Tackle and large live baits are the way to go. If you have time catch bait before you go, nothing beats a pin fish or spot. I suggest 100# leader at a minimum. If Scamp Grouper are your target live cigar minnows or a small grunt is the bait of choice. Look for post spawn aggregations in 150 to 160 ft. In addition to Grouper Red Porgy, Triggerfish and Vermillion Snapper will be plentiful. If you are looking for a work out Amberjack AKA reef donkeys will be aggregated along the shelf edge. They will eat live baits but will also hammer a jig worked vertically through the water column. If the Mahi fail to show up it is still worth going for some of the best fishing of the year.

M
ay is the month for getting your string stretched! Bonnethead sharks move in to feast on the Calico crabs. Half of a Blue crab makes for excellent bait. They’ll run 10 to 25lbs with very sharp teeth. Gear up heavy with 100 lb mono leader attached to a 5/0 to 7/0 circle hook. You have heard the saying, we are what we eat. Since their main diet is crabs they taste great as deep fried shark McNuggets! This will be the best month for Pompano in the surf! They were slow getting here because of the cold water in early April. Now it is game on. My favorite gear and bait is a double dropper rig tipped with 2/0 L197 Eagle Claw hooks. Favorite bait combo is a fresh sand flea on the top hook and fresh clam on the bottom hook. If you find that they are after
one or the other bait then switch to just the better bait. They feed in clean water so if you get to the beach and it looks dirty, do not bother. Here is a pro tip. The water is always cleaner on one side of any inlet. Do not fish in dirty surf, Your just asking for catfish and stingrays! This has been the best year for whiting in the last forty years! I have never seen so many coolers full of these tasty fish. They have also been running bigger than ever. I have not caught a small whiting all spring. They have all been eleven to eighteen inches and up to two pounds. Double dropper rigs with smaller #2 hooks tip with small pieces of shrimp are your best bet. My favorite way to cook them is pan seared with panko bread crumbs. However my healthy choice is Ceviche. April was very exciting with big blue fish and medium size sharks. This month should be the same. Blues to ten pounds and sharks to fifteen pounds have been gobbling up whiting strips in the surf. I like to use a fish finder rig tied just like in the first paragraph. The only difference is use a strip of whiting appx 1”x 3”x ½”. You just never know what will eat these tasty little baits..

Good Times At The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge
F
rom Feb. 7-10, 18 teams gathered on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas at the Sea Spray Resort and Marina for the Second Annual Sea Spray Abaco Challenge. Hosted by the resort, this tournament is becoming known as one of the most enjoyable in the Bahamas. With prize packages through fifth place, affordable entry and value-added categories, nine radio raffles worth $400 each, team bags and buckets stuffed with goodies and fantastic food and live entertainment, this event is all about having fun. This year’s event raised and donated more than $6,000 to the Hope Town Primary School, Every Child Counts Bahamas and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. Wahoo, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are the target species, with teams eligible to weigh their two biggest fish from each species on each day of the three-day competition. This year Team Crab Eyes took home the overall championship with a cumulative weight of 292.6 pounds. These guys finished second in the inaugural event and were eager to take home the win. In second place was Team Sonny Boy with a total of 134.3 pounds. Sonny Boy also weighed the biggest fish in the Wahoo Category, and at 52.9 pounds took biggest fish overall for the tournament. In third place was Team Perfect Timing with a total of 83.2 pounds. These guys came from out of nowhere on the last day to make it onto the podium. Special congratulations to Team Family Circus, which won the local Bahamian championship with a total of 65.9 pounds. Their name will be inscribed on the residual trophy at the resort and they took home a beautiful black grouper mount by tournament sponsor King Sailfish Release Mounts. Tricks of the Trade
L
ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! Sheri is a world-record holder, host of Speargun Hunter, and producer of The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Follow “Sheri Daye” and “The Blue Wild” on Facebook and Instagram.

W
aiting at home for a phone call, running to the mailbox for news from a friend, scanning the Yellow Pages for a plumber—these artifacts from the pre-Internet days are laughable activities in today’s era of technology. When was the last time you replaced the tape in your answering machine or the ribbon in your typewriter? So in this modern age, why would anyone look to a tour book with old information for advice on planning a fishing trip? For unknown reasons, all the tour books for Costa Rica list the high season for fishing as November to April. At FishingNosara we get calls from clients all the time regarding the best time of year to come fishing in Costa Rica. The truth is the fishing here is fairly consistent year-round. After all, fish eat every day. But, armed with an out-of-date tour book, these callers insist that summer is no good. To counter these misconceptions, FishingNosara maintains photographic evidence to the contrary at blog.FishingNosara.com as well as on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Let’s take a glance back at the last few years of fishing in the month of May and prove the tour books wrong. In May 2017, angler Roger Chambers fished for a week in Nosara and closed out the campaign with a four-species day. They had an early roosterfish release, then Capt. William of the Wanderer got a call on the radio from Capt. Carlos on the Discoverer reporting a kettle of yellowfin tuna offshore. The mid-afternoon bite led to dorados and yellowfin tuna on ice for Team Chambers. The final score of the day was a Sailfish release. In May 2016, the Harvester welcomed Ken Richmond and his group of hard-fishing Texans and caught a true fish of a lifetime with a massive 400-plus-pound blue marlin. Also, the 26-foot Explorer scored an 80-plus-pound floor-sweeping wahoo, several nice sailfish and a half-dozen roosterfish releases. Likewise, big cubera snapper were abundant on the 23-foot Adventurer, and the 32-foot Wanderer scored some trips with double-digit sailfish releases. May is also a great time for honeymoons. Newlyweds Daniel and Vicky Martinko scored a mammoth wahoo, a beautiful roosterfish and lots of sailfish during their 2015 trip. In May 2015, the Discoverer brought the house down with a billfish grand slam on May 10. Client Tony King and his group scored a striped marlin estimated around 200 pounds and a larger blue marlin estimated at more than 350 pounds. They added a sailfish to the scorecard to round-out a legendary day of fishing. We have video of the grand slam catches on the FishingNosara blog, which proves—regardless of what the tour book says—that Costa Rica’s fishing is consistently good… no matter the season. Visit blog.FishingNosara.com for current photos, video and reports on the action.

OAA Fisheries recently changed the recreational seasons for greater amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico. Recreational fishing for greater amberjack will be open May 1-31, 2018. The greater amberjack recreational fishing year will be Aug. 1 through July 31. The greater amberjack recreational fixed closed season will be Nov. 1 through April 30 and June 1 through July 31. Recreational fishing will be open August through October and in May. The change in fishing year is expected to improve recreational fishermen’s access to greater amberjack. It is expected to provide an opportunity to harvest this species when other targeted reef fish species are prohibited from harvest. The recreational fixed closed season was Jan. 1 through June 30. The intent of this closure for 2018 was to provide the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council more time to consider the most appropriate recreational closed season. The new fixed closed season of Nov. 1 through April 30 and June 1 through July 31 is expected to protect the greater amberjack population during peak spawning and still allow for spring and fall recreational harvest.
t’s all too easy to read fishing articles and have it be entertainment and inspiration instead of education. What can you do to begin to accelerate your learning curve? First, start taking notes. That’s right, this is your leisure time and you’re not in school any more but its time you take your game up a notch. Get a notebook; this could be the back half of the fishing log book you started, and start using it when you read articles in magazine, books or online subscriptions. Review your notes after you finish reading an article and make sure you understand those notes. If not, get in touch with the author if possible and ask. Next, using Google Earth (the program—not Google Maps satellite version) make a game plan based on what you learned from the article. Take screen shots and print them to remind you what your plan is and take these with you in the boat with your notes. Execute the plan, and stay on task. I find that it’s all too easy for a student to begin the plan that was laid out, only to quickly let it evaporate and punt, reverting to old habits once on the water. Hope these notes help you become a better student of your teachers. Always feel free to contact us at TroutSupport.com for support in improving your coastal inshore fishing game. t’s that time of year again to dust off the rods and reels for the 25th Anniversary Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s (SECF) Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Tournament. With such a special anniversary, there will be many surprises. Over the previous 24 years the tournament has raised more than $567,000, all of which has gone back to the community and the causes SECF supports. The Exchange Club is all about the prevention of child abuse
as well as supporting many area youth-oriented services and organizations. A few of these are Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Youth Guidance, Shiloh Youth Ranch, CASTLE, Sebastian Soccer, Sebastian River High School Crew, and the list goes on! This year’s tournament will be held again at Capt. Hiram’s Resort on Indian River Drive in Sebastian. On June 1, there will be a captain’s meeting and party, starting with registration at 5 p.m. and the captain’s meeting at 6 p.m. This is a great party and an added benefit to the actual tournament. There will be all kinds of drawings as well as a live auction. We have an awesome shirt designed for this year’s tournament, which will be available for purchase. On Saturday, June 2, fishing starts with lines in at 6 a.m. The weigh in starts at 2 p.m., with a cutoff of 5 p.m. If you haven’t been to one of these exciting events, now is the time. Fishing is predicted to be fantastic this year, and watching fishermen bring in some monster fish is very exciting. They will be vying for a chance to win part of a guaranteed $19,000 purse. The four main-board payouts will be for grouper, kingfish, wahoo and dolphin. Payouts for the four categories are: 1st place-$1,250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $250; 2nd place-$600, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $150; 3rd place-$400, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $100; 4th place-$250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $50. Some of the other divisions include Junior and Lady Angler. Along with the main board, there is a $1,000 prize for the largest cobia and amberjack. But wait… there’s more! The William Knapstein Memorial award is an additional $1,000 for the largest grouper. This is donated by his family in his memory. And… there is a bonus board payout of $200, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $30 for the next 10 places knocked off the main board. So bring the kids, come on out to Capt. Hiram’s June 1-2 for some great fun and a chance to support good causes. For more information, visit www.bluewateropen.com or call Michael Natale at 772-664-0525 or event chair Eva Chapman at 772-783-5822.

verything about the Bahamas holds a special place in my heart. Forty-five years later, whether I am chartering Duchess or guiding my clients on their own boats, I still feel the excitement of seeing the Bahama Bank as if it were for the first time. Introducing new friends or returning old friends back to the islands never gets dull. Docking at Rosie’s Place on Grand Cay, Old Bahama Bay in West End, or Orchid Bay on Guana Cay, I know we will be welcomed by our island friends and enjoy the rich hospitality that each one provides. Everyone knows my favorite fishing is for pelagic fish. It never gets old hearing the squeal of the reel as a wahoo, dolphin, tuna or marlin strikes the lures of my design. I also enjoy shutting down the diesels and drifting over the reef with spinning rods catching grouper and snapper. I enjoy eating our catch when we arrive and also look forward to seeing my local Bahamian friends who dive and fish, come to the dock to sell us lobster and stone crab, in season, and conch. Fresh bread brought to the docks by the local ladies goes perfectly with the huge bowl of conch salad I make every time I am there. My last trip was extremely special, as I had my son Allan, grandson Marlin, and longtime friends the Sultan family on board the Duchess. We arrived in Grand Cay for Homecoming and The Joe Flanigan Memorial Tournament. Big Joe was my mentor and close friend. His family holds the tournament every year in honor of their father, who loved fishing and diving the Abacos. This event allowed me to visit with old friends and generations of Grand Cay residents. I feel fortunate that my life’s direction has taken me to places in the Bahamas that bring me and others I have shared it with so much joy. Capt. Billy Black has been fishing the productive offshore waters of Florida’s Treasure Coast and the northern Bahamas for decades. Over the years, he has nurtured many great relationships with the Bahamas and its people fishing the classic 50 ft. Hatteras Duchess.

ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with
three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. For Hendersonville information and lodging details, call 800-8284244 or go to: www.VisitHendersonvilleNC.org

ho doesn’t have a smile on their face when they’re spending time on the water? You can’t help yourself. Boating is the definition of getting away from it all. And getting away from it all is always more fun with friends. This is where the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club comes in. Enjoying your time on the water with family and friends starts with being safe and responsible while having fun. That’s what makes America’s Boating Club different than most boating organizations. For over a hundred years, the organization’s focus has been on providing unsurpassed boating safety education. But the organization’s leadership and members are passionate about a membership that doesn’t end on Sunday and doesn’t care if the calendar says it’s winter. It’s about being together and building a community through a variety of events like parties, meetings and even just getting together for no reason at all. Driven by this passion, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, the country’s largest nonprofit boating organization, just launched its new logo. This is the first of several planned updates in the organization’s new brand image and identity. Changes to the organization’s website, social media platforms and collateral are expected in the coming weeks. “We are United States Power Squadrons, but we are also America’s Boating Club,” said Gary Cheney, chief commander, United States Power Squadrons. “This is not just a name change, it describes what we do. We go boating and have fun doing it. Our squadrons are social clubs as well as providers of high quality boating education – allowing members to enjoy the sport and camaraderie of boating and any number of activities that keep us together. Togetherness is what this lifestyle is all about. We joined the organization for the boating education, but we stayed for the friends.”
Offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather and related subjects, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club serves as a virtual “yacht club” with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 local clubs across the country, America’s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Members are vital to strengthening the communities they live in and know it’s important to live their values by giving back through public service and volunteer opportunities. Members provide courtesy vessel safety checks, help the NOAA’s National Ocean Service keep nautical charts accurate and organize beach cleanups. “Our commitment is to continue learning, teaching, laughing and helping our fellow members enjoy boating,” continued Cheney. “Whether you’re passionate about cruising, racing, making new friends, volunteering in your community or learning from experienced boaters, your local squadron has the resources you need to engage your passions and, perhaps, instill some new ones.” In February of 2017, the United States Power Squadrons announced its America’s Boating Club co-brand to its squadrons, following an almost yearlong re-naming exercise. Popticals Are Performance Glasses
Without The Hassle
For any outdoor adventure—whether it’s hiking, fishing or camping—you need high-performance sunglasses. No matter if it’s a day hike or a multi-day camping trip, sports sunglasses keep your eyes safe when you’re outside and enhance your vision to make your experience even better. The problem is, there’s nowhere to keep your sunglasses when it’s time to take them off. Cases are too big and take up valuable pack space. They’re big and bulky in your pocket, if they even fit there. Most resort to hanging expensive glasses on a strap around their necks or
perching them on their heads. That’s no way to treat a valuable piece of equipment. Without protection, your sunglasses end up scratched, lost or broken, and you didn’t just hike into the backcountry to view breathtaking vistas through scratched lenses. Popticals are the solution to this dilemma. They are good-looking, high-performance, polarized sports sunglasses that fold down to a small profile and fit in a portable, durable case. Popticals feature the patented FL2 Micro-Rail System, which is a breakthrough design that allows for folding sunglasses that are sturdy and hold up to rugged use. The case is less than half the size of cases for most comparable high-performance sunglasses. Slip it into your pocket, where it is unobtrusive. Throw it in your backpack without having to worry about damage to your frames or lenses. Or clip it with the attached carabiner to the outside of your gear, where your shades will be safe but easily accessible. In addition to taking up less space when stored, Popticals are also lightweight. With NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, they weigh significantly less than glasses with glass lenses without sacrificing on clarity or performance. Popticals feature high-quality polarized lenses but weigh less, which makes them more comfortable on your face for all-day wear. For backpackers, it also cuts down on the load your shoulders will be hauling. “Pack Small. Live Big” is a motto Popticals has adopted. The idea is that your gear should enhance your experience, not weigh down or inconvenience you. With Popticals, you’ll have clearer, better vision for your adventure. And when you don’t have them on, you won’t have to worry about them being lost, scratched or broken. For more on Popticals and to see all of their sunglasses, go to www. popticals.com.
SEE MORE. CATCH MORE. PopH2O with NYDEF™ lens technology lets you see sharper details beneath the surface of the water to catch the fish your buddies can’t even see. Polarized NYDEF™ nylon lenses made by Carl Zeiss enhance your vision with the clarity of a glass lens at a fraction of the weight. Spend less time guessing at what you’re seeing in the water, and more time catching fish. #SeeMoreFishCatchMoreFish

fISHLIGHT
The Ultimate Fish Attractor!
FREE Shipping!
The BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed eater-cord blades knocks bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and small ponds. Bugs come to the light, bugs get knocked in the water, baitfish feed on bugs, big fish feed on baitfish, and you catch the big fish! The device is simple to install. The durable docklights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and costs less than a nickel a night to operate. Compared with the cost of mechanical feeders, the device will pay for itself in the first year. For more information and to watch a video, see the website or scan the barcode. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Road Shower THE SOLAR SHOWER OF THE FUTURE IS HERE!
Running water is nice to have when you’re on the road to adventure, but many times it is awfully hard to find. The Road Shower is like adding plumbing to the rack of your vehicle. It gives outdoors enthusiasts easy access to hot or cold pressurized water wherever the road takes them. It’s simple; mount The Road Shower to the roof rack, fill the tank with water and let the sun do the rest. With a handy temperature gauge, it’s easy to watch the progress as solar power heats the water inside at a rate of 12 to 20 degrees per hour on a sunny day. By the time you return from a trail ride or day of fishing, there could be water hotter than 100 degrees waiting for you to take a shower. But cleaning your body is just one use for this handy invention. Hot water makes cleaning the camp dishes a breeze. Good water pressure is invaluable for rinsing down muddy kayaks, boards, bikes, boots or pets. And The Road Shower can be used for drinking water as well. The Road Shower is available in 4-, 7-, or 10-gallon models. It is constructed of powder-coated aluminum with very few extra parts, so it is extremely durable and built to last a lifetime. The unit can be pressurized automatically while filling it with a garden hose, and pressurization can also be achieved with a bike pump or other inflation tools where there is no hose available.

Bluefin A State Record
A
n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
