F

ast and stable, with a needle nose that reminded people of a mosquito buzzing over southern waters, the world’s first bass boat was the 1948 brainchild of Shreveport, Louisiana’s Holmes Thurmond. That first Skeeter boat, made of molded marine plywood, caught on quickly with local anglers. It launched the brand

that today, 70 years later, is still renowned for building innovative boats designed specifically for the needs of recreational anglers.

Cary Crutchfield, co-publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine’s North Central Florida edition, owns one of those early Skeeter boats.

When he bought his first Skeeter in the 1960s, the company was already leading the way in what became an industry-wide transition to fiberglass. His was a 15-foot model with stick steering up front that was powered by a 35hp outboard.

looking boat,” Crutchfield said of those early flat-bottomed Skeeters. “It’s narrow, and the way the sides turn up to the cockpit makes it very stable to move around in.”

With today’s bass boats, a 250hp Yamaha seems like a necessity to even compete on the tournament circuits. Back then, a Skeeter with a 35hp was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 30 mph. It was a fishing boat superior to any that came before it. The Super Skeeter arose as the boat for serious anglers fishing the large, newly constructed man-made reservoirs that have since fueled the sport.

Crutchfield sold his 15-footer in the 1980s and almost immediately began kicking himself. He missed the narrow profile and shallow draft, along with kind of stability that allows him to stand comfortably and pole into very tight places.

It wasn’t long before he ran into another old Skeeter he had to have, this one a 14-footer, originally powered by a 25hp outboard that has since been replaced by a 1950s model 12hp. Even with that old motor, it still gets around pretty quickly, and Crutchfield said it’s still the perfect small fishing boat where he launches on the Suwannee River.

With the spirit of innovation that gave rise to that first bass boat and an open ear to the new requirements of early bass tournaments, Skeeter grew and evolved with the sport. The Skeeter Hawk did away with the characteristic pointed bow, which allowed for a smoother ride and a raised casting platform.

In the 1970s, after moving into its current plant in Kilgore, Texas, Skeeter rolled the dice and introduced the legendary Wrangler to the bass fishing world. Rated for 150hp with a V-bottom, it was an odd and new style that absolutely dominated the competition in performance. It became the template that led to the high-performance fishing machines that roar

around our reservoirs today.

In 2018, Skeeter Performance Fishing Boats is celebrating its 70th year of providing anglers with exceptional fishing boats. With modern technology and computer design capabilities, it has continued to lead the industry with innovations such as the first production composite bass boat, the ZX202, in the mid-1990s.

The venerable ZX series, in all its versions, has been a staple in the bass tournament world for more then three decades. But listening to the needs of the fishermen who are its customers, Skeeter branched out to produce deep-v boats for walleye tournament anglers on the big lakes of the north, as well as bay boats for saltwater anglers.

Skeeter’s acquisition by Yamaha in 1996 brought new resources to the table and advances followed. In 2001, Skeeter again set a new standard for the industry with its Torque Transfer Transom and Stringer System, which provides lift to the entire keel, while eliminating stress on the on the transom, deck, hull and sides.

Through all the advancements, Skeeter boats bear little resemblance to Thurmond’s first bass boat. But the same concept, to design perfect

Drifting For

Nighttime Yellowfin On Gulf Floaters

Y

ellowfin tuna are some of the most sought after gamefish in the world. They are the ahi tuna on the menus at restaurants and sushi bars, and in the water they have the speed and power to wear down anglers and break gear.

The signature “spiral” that tuna commence in the waning moments of a fight is responsible for untold numbers of broken lines and broken hearts. After battling 30 mph runs for 20 minutes or more, the weary angler, captain and crew face one final test, a team effort to survive the spiral and get the fish on deck. These tense moments, when a big yellowfin turns sideways and begins to circle, using its body’s mass as leverage, are the most critical minutes of the fight. If the line even touches the boat, it will snap, and the circling fish provides many opportunities for this to happen.

These moments are the reason Randy King, of Paparda Rey Fishing Charters out of Galveston, Texas, says the main limitation on their catch is the ability of the angler. The captain, Kenneth Doxey, is solid. He has been running their 54-foot Bertram and their 35-foot Cabo for more than a decade. He was the 2016 recipient

of the Houston Big Game Fishing Club’s Jim Peachey Award. The crew is also top-notch, which leaves the angler as the potential weak link.

The good news is there will likely be multiple opportunities on one of their overnight trips to deep-water oil platforms off Texas. King said a great trip with six anglers would yield a dozen yellowfin tuna in the 40- to 120-pound range, and that doesn’t include the shots anglers will have at mahi-mahi, wahoo, marlin and blackfin tuna.

Out of Galveston, it’s 100 miles or more into the Gulf of Mexico to reach the enormous floating gas and oil structures off the edge of the Continental Shelf. These deep-water facilities, known as “floaters,” create their own food chain, consolidating bait and gamefish from miles around.

On a typical 36- or 48-hour trip, don’t plan on sleeping much. The floaters are brightly lit at night, which is when the tuna fishing is best. After identifying fish on the sonar, chumming and drift fishing with 30-pound-class tackle is usually the most productive method for yellowfin.

“Sometimes the tuna will start breaching,” said King. “They’ll jump in the air like king mackerel.”

It’s for these occasions, when fish are on the surface, that big spinning rigs armed with poppers are

kept on deck.

Drifting and pulling poppers while chugging back up-current to start a new drift goes on all night long. At dawn, the bait rods come in, and it’s time to start trolling. The primary daylight targets are marlin, sailfish, wahoo and dolphin.

Between night and day, it equates to a whole lot of big fish packed into a weekend at sea. It’s a grand adventure, and a meat trip of epic proportions in the Gulf of Mexico.

By Randy “C-Note” Cnota f you’ve ever found yourself fishing for largemouths after a bitter cold front has blown into your area, then you might be familiar with how tough northern winds can make it to fill a livewell. All tournament anglers know these fronts wait until the night before the competition to crash the feeding-frenzy of the days prior to an event.

There is hope in this situation, and it doesn’t involve finesse presentations. It requires you to break out your heaviest sticks and braid (65 lb. minimum) as well as your stoutest hooks and beefiest weights. It’s time to present your bait where many fear to go… under the floating grass mats. I have an 11 pounder, two 10 pounders and probably over 100 in the 5- to 8-lb. range to my credit using this technique.

Mats of grass in the South consist of wide variety of aquatic vegetation. Where I fish most, they consist of hydrilla, submergent Airline_CoastalAnglerAd_3-2016_Layout 1 3/18/16 1:07 PM aPage 1 grass that grows to the surface, and hyacinth, a floating vegetation.

The hydrilla acts as a base that holds the hyacinth in place. This makes for a bass sanctuary similar to your home in that it has walls and a ceiling.

The trick to presenting your bait to these cold fish hiding under the mats is to crash it through their roof (the hyacinth) using a large tungsten steel weight. The exact size is dependent upon the thickness of the mat, but you want a weight that penetrates without too much effort. I usually opt for a 1 ¾-ounce, as the bass will be heading for the deepest recesses of the mat. This is also a place that many anglers fail to target because it can be quite a chore to penetrate and doubly difficult to extract a fish… especially a big fish. This is why we use heavy rods, lines and hooks.

The most popular baits to present to these fish are small craw or creature type baits. I find Gambler Chigger Craws or Burner Craws work great, but there’s no shortage of baits to choose from. Color is always a personal preference, but I’ve had the best results using hues of green like watermelon-red and green pumpkin for clear water and dark hues like black/blue or junebug for darker water.

As for the technique, simply put, you have to get the bait through the roof and into the bass’ house so he can eat it, but there are too many subtleties to discuss here. Once a bass bites, you have to get him out so again… NO WIMPY TACKLE! If you’ve never punched mats, I suggest you go out with someone with experience. Commit to spending a lot of time punching the mats, and set out with a variety of weights, hooks and lures to experiment and fine tune your technique. And don’t forget the camera; most fish hauled out of these places are picture-worthy.

pring is almost here on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Soon the redbuds and crabapples and a host of other flowering trees and plants will be budding. Where should you be fishing?

For many years now, I’ve learned to read the plants that are blooming to know if the seasonal shift of my bay would be ahead of schedule or behind. While the last several winters have had bitter cold, these cold periods still have been shorter compared to long-term trends. This leads to certain flowering trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants to bloom early or later, and I’ve found over time this to be a consistent indicator correlating with forage species movements into and out of the bays and estuaries.

Redbuds, crabapples, and a host of flowering bulbs tend to be great indicators of early spring warm ups and whether or not the trout will move early from the rivers and other winter haunts to more of a spring location ahead of schedule or sometimes behind schedule.

You’ll have to begin making notes in your log as to what the fish are doing in your area and what species to watch as they bloom and stop.

Seeing the redbuds flower early compared to prior seasons could lead you to abandon your winter fishing locations ahead of your planned time. Getting on the move early can then help you find those early spring fish ahead of schedule.

I

n early November, my buddy and I set out to fish some shallow flats in our kayaks. The water and air temperatures were near the 80-degree mark in south Texas. The area we had available to us only had a few inches of tidal flow predicted. When saltwater fishing, current is at the top of the list for catching requirements, but when the tide doesn’t provide it, find something that will.

I had not fished this area in three years, and since that time hurricane Harvey changed a few things from the vehicle access point to my favorite hole, which isn’t a hole anymore. Needless to say, this was going to be a scouting mission as well as a fishing trip. We made our way to our first stop, which was a large knee- to waist-deep grass flat with a deep channel running down one side that is separated by a few spoil islands.

We anchored up at the tip of a spoil island and casted to the channel.

Although there was an abundance of bait, we didn’t get a strike.

Off to plan B, my old honey hole. Once there, I realized the sweet spot was no longer, but we fished the area thoroughly since bait was present. We managed only a few strikes and a couple small trout.

Knowing that the fish were inactive and that the tide was weak, I searched for an area where the wind might help drive a little more water flow to get the fish feeding. We headed back to the vicinity of our first stop, which was a flat the shape of a football field with the wind blowing from one endzone to the other. On the downwind side, there were a few small islands with breaks between them. Due to the wind, these breaks

funneled stronger water movement onto a small shallow flat. This flat didn’t have more bait than the other areas, but it did have water movement, which sparked the bite. We spent several hours in this tiny area catching reds and speckled trout.

We used the same lures and presentation as we did earlier in the day.

Soft plastic topwater jerk baits in pearl accounted for the more aggressive fish, but they were the smaller ones in this area. All of our larger fish came on slow-sinking paddle shad. Targeting the potholes and letting the lures slowly sink at the edge of the sand-to-grass transition drew the better strikes.

When fishing on less than desirable tides, remember to seek out locations that can offer it a push. Funnels and choke points are always a good bet, even if they are subtle. The water depth was the same on both sides and in between the islands, but it gave that little push the fish needed.

ow’s everyone doing? Just came off the coldest week any one can remember, there was solid ice across our Inlet in Osprey Marina, our boat was even frozen in.

On the bright side the grandkids did get to build a small snowman and see snow for the first time, plus it was 60 degrees a week later.

You have to love the SC weather!

Deer season is over; the weather is starting to warm and the fish were always biting we just didn’t want to get cold chasing them.\ So, it’s time to get out your fishing gear and get ready. Right?

For those that are new to our sport and as a reminder to those that are waiting to get a call from your buddies to go on the first trip this year, don’t wait for the last second and find out your gear and/or boat are not ready.

February is the best month to do an inventory and punch list of things to do before the season starts.

As a professional fisherman, I was asked at a recent seminar, “What do we do in the winter?� My answer was, punch lists for everything.

What’s a punch list? Just ask yourself a few questions then make a to-do list in order of importance.

We start with fishing gear. How are the poles, guides and reel seats? Replace the line and lube the reels, replace worn gears.

Sharpen everything, gaffs, knifes and hooks.

Replace and repair lures and rigs, etc.

Next how is the boat and/or trailer? Detail it, bottom paint, repair and/or tune motors, check through hulls and hoses, check trailer lights and wheels. How are your electronics and safety gear? How are your batteries?

Etc., etc., etc.

I think you get the point, make a punch list for everything and work your way through it. My sons and I have fished, delivered boats and done marine service for too many years to remember and it always amazes us when we get a call in the middle of the season from someone who is mad because they can’t get anyone to come replace a battery, detail a boat or tune a motor because they didn’t do it earlier.

Why wait, do it now while the days are short, and the weather is still too cold to hit the water. There’s nothing worse than the bite is on and you’re broken down or worse, you are hooked in to the big one and the line breaks because you never had a chance to replace the old stuff!

With all that said, February is a great month to hit the Boat Shows, plan you fishing trips and get ready for the warm weather ahead. Remember the old Boy Scout motto; Be Prepared!

ey everybody it’s your favorite Captain Jason the Flounder Pounder Burton and today we’re going to talk a little bit about the importance of taking a kid fishing. Everybody’s heard the old saying give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for life. Well the same exact concept applies when it comes to kids. As you all know many of our kids today are distracted by cell phones, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and the list goes on and on. That’s why it’s so important today to get these kids out there fishing and showing them what somebody once showed us, which is how to fish and hunt.

I was very fortunate to discover fishing at a very young age and I

can’t help but wonder where I would be today if it was not for the people who taught me how to fish, but more importantly kept me chasing my dreams instead of looking for trouble. I think today is more important than ever with these distractions to grab your kids, take a neighbor’s kid, if you don’t have kids volunteer your time to organizations like SALTT or other programs out there aimed at helping kids. Also remember it’s important to show the future of America how to be responsible, how to have respect and obey the regulations of fishing, hunting, and to show great sportsmanship.

The alternative is going to be a society filled with kids playing on their phones and wanting to stay inside all day. For me as a fishing guide the most enjoyable trips I ever have are always the one where the kid gets on the boat, his face is lit up with excitement and when the opportunity strikes to make this kids dream come true everyone onboard will never forget that moment. For his

family those memories are the ones you always cherish and the stories he will be telling at Thanksgiving dinners, because one thing is for sure everyone of us has a story whether it’s the one that got away or catching the biggest fish of your life. Of course, when we get older that fish just seems to get bigger and bigger. I look forward to the opportunity to be a contributing writer in the upcoming Coastal Angler Magazine editions. I hope that you enjoy my articles as I attempt to pass on some knowledge and great fishing stories.

Handle with Care Let me start by saying I am not a marine biologist and most of what I’m going to talk about here is based from talking to local fishermen, their knowledge and internet research. The subject matter is a sensitive one in our area…How to handle Bull Reds. I think that this topic, is worth talking about so please email me your opinions on “to take that picture or not” and how best to handle the great resource of our Red Drums.

Here’s a few pointers: We as anglers have to understand that all species of fish are put under a lot of stress during a fight so first thing be smart about your gear.

Unless you’re out trying to break a record, which is fine with me, but if not use the right gear for the right fish. No real reason to use an 8lb. outfit to catch a 30lb. Red, you can’t break any records on Reds anyway.

Circle Hooks are a must! There is no reason to use any other hook in my opinion. Of all the studies done, not

only on Reds, but all species, have shown that the number of fish gut hooked and died shortly after release is almost tripled when using a J Hook compared to a circle hook.

Now with Reds, I do believe that they need to be handled safely and to avoid taking the large ones from the water when you take your pictures, and even though a number of studies do show a dramatic climb in the Red fish population since the protection act was signed by Pres. Bush in 2007, the better we do with catch and release the better the chances are of kids catching Reds in the future.

My Dad can tell you as a kid he didn’t catch Striped Bass up in New Jersey, the species was destroyed by overfishing. But with my brother and I growing up I can tell you many stories of 100+ Stripers caught on our 17ft Pro Line in one afternoon.

Striped Bass regulations up north are similiar to Red Fish down here My point is the regulations that are

set up help the population grow and for those that are interested you should take the time to read about the Success of the Striped Bass management program which should be our goal with our Reds.

Let’s talk about the big PICTURE; should you remove these fish from the water? In the social media world we live in, it’s all about who’s best and biggest with their opinions. As for my opinion go ahead and take that trophy picture, but do it safely...support the fish weight completely...don’t lip them…don’t dangle them by the tail...don’t get your fingers in their gills...handle them like a newborn baby...take your picture and lower them into the water until they swim away from you, don’t just toss the fish we love back into the ocean and say good luck with the sharks big girl.

I feel this way about all fish. You see plenty of pictures with 100+lb. Sail Fish and Sharks taken out of the water and released but no one seems to care. A few bull reds on the pages of magazines and the world is a horrible place. All the pictures we see of these Reds proves that the regulations are working.

So, in closing I feel that in the sport of fishing, we as anglers sometimes,

not on purpose, may hurt a fish. I am a big fan of tag and release fishing, but if I said that every single fish I’ve ever had to our boats was released alive and well...I would be lying, but 99.9% of them swim free. We have two rules when handling any fish on our boats; one if you’re going to hold um do it safely, quickly and responsibly and two if you’re going to keep it you’re going to eat it!

Inshore: The cold weather we had has slowed things down a bit, but still getting solid reports of Reds and Black Drum on the Rocks. Sea Trout has slowed inside as the fish look for warmer water, but the bite is still on. Live shrimp are still your best option, but these fish are also hitting on MiroLures and Gulps rigged on a jig head.

Inshore: Plenty of reports on Red and Black Drum on both Murrells and Georgetown Inlets using live shrimp, also some Sheepshead being caught on fiddlers. Sea Trout have slowed but the water is getting warmer again so we expect this to pick up soon.

Pier and surf fishing has slowed with the cold weather but there is still plenty of bluefish around along with the occasional Red and Sea Trout coming out of the surf.

Freshwater right now the report is that the Crappie bite is real strong using live minnows under a float or on a jig head is your best bet but they will hit on small jigs.

Offshore: The Wahoo as usual are still hitting strong as with Blackfin Tuna.

Reports of some Sails being trolled up here and there also and plenty of False Albacore to be found.

Offshore: Blackfin are Wahoo are still hitting strong out of Georgetown, most of our bottom fishing reports are coming from commercial fisherman but plenty of Grouper and Snapper if you’re willing to make the run.

A HISTORIC RIVERTOWN

On The River with Matt Varnadore The holidays may be over, but holiday traditions still continue. One such tradition for me is what my friends and I call Oysters on the Waccamaw. We are not very fancy people and there is not some hidden meaning behind the name. We are actually going to steam oysters on the banks of the river. This tradition started many years ago when my best friend and I returned to his river house from a duck hunt on the Waccamaw. We had an idea to take his dads 17’ Montauk Boston Whaler to town and get a bushel of clusters from the local fish market that was and still is located on the river. So we put the guns up, grabbed our rods and fished our way to and from town catching bream and crappie. Once we reached the fish market we would get a bushel of clusters and a fried shrimp snack for the ride back. By the time we returned to the river house the sun was setting and the temps we dropping so it was time to start a fire and start the oysters. We had an old washtub that we would dump the oysters in along with our “secret” concoction. Our secret concoction consisted of nothing more than what beer we could find and a little river water for good measure.

Once the oyster concoction was assembled we would then cover the oysters with the burlap sack and set the tub over the fire. My friend and I would enjoy eating the oysters while sitting on the bank listening to the sounds of the river. He and I kept this tradition going for many years and as word got out about what we were doing it started to grow starting with girlfriends and then other mutual friends. Now our wives, children, neighbors and others join in on our still spontaneous roast each year. We still buy the oysters from the same local fish market and from time to time relive old times by taking a boat down to pick them up depending on the weather.

The Waccamaw River is a special place for those of us who have had the privilege of growing up on the river. For us the river is not just about the biggest fish we caught, secret spots, special baits or the limit we caught, it’s much more. For us the river is about making memories that last a lifetime. If you have never made the trip down the Waccamaw to Conway I highly recommend it. There is plenty of water for big boats and ample docking for both day trippers and overnighters.

Marinas, restaurants, bars and small, unique mom and pop shops located in the historic district are within walking distance from the river. It’s a beautiful trip and you never know what you may see while On the River.

hope everyone is doing well.

There is not a lot of fishing activity to report although inshore side of fishing continues to be productive to those who are braving the ups and downs of winter weather in SC. Offshore waters have had a little Blackfin Tuna action. This flurry of activity was spread from the Little River waters down to Charleston.

Bottom fishing also was good.

The week of Christmas blessed me with a visit from one of my favorite Captains and his wife.

Capt. Eric “Poppy” Heiden and wife Rosa Lee stopped by with a special present of trigger fish fillets. Trigger fish is definitely a delicacy in my book!

The SC Wahoo Series Tournament is upcoming event (you may have caught my plug in the last update). This growing tournament bears mentioning again as we look forward to more time on the water. The SC Wahoo Series was started on Hilton Head Island in 2012, founded by Marc Pincus. His goal is to make the series accessible to all SC waters and surrounding states. The first year saw 24 teams participating.

In 2016 the series hit 60 teams, with over half coming from Edisto Beach to northern waters towards Charleston. In 2017 an official scale was added in Tolers Cove Marina in Charleston and the series saw 111 teams participating! The addition of Georgetown Landing Marina for 2018

is expected to again expand the growth of this tournament. With the addition of Georgetown Landing Marina, the entire SC coast has coverage of this tournament as there will be DNR certified scales at 3 locations; Hilton Head Marina, Tolers Cove Marina, and Georgetown Landing Marina. The entry fee is $550 dollars with optional Tournament Within Tournaments opportunities also. The 2017 total winners’ payouts for first through eleventh place as well as the tournaments within the tournament was over $100,000 dollars! In 2017, first place fish was 100.5 pounds, 2016, first place fish weighed 101.1 pounds.

The series is won by the heaviest 2 fish aggregate. Teams can declare 2 fish days from February 2 to April 15 weighing 1 fish each day. There is a bonus day April 14 in the Annual Hilton Head Harbor Shootout. January 13 is the kick off of this series with a Captains Meeting. The Wahoo fishery in SC is world class with monster fish being weighed.

o, I set here this morning sipping on my coffee in sub-freezing temps in South Carolina trying to muster up some kayaking thoughts when it seems like I should be ice fishing. After all, I did purchase a vintage ice fishing auger and tip-up over the weekend. I thought I bought it to hang on the wall but now I am thinking I may get to use it. However, I know that Spring will be here before we know it as well as some warmer days in between and I want you and your new kayak to be ready.

If you have been following this series of articles, you should know by now about the many boats out there and their uses. I hope you have decided on a boat that fits your fishing styles, wants and wishes. Now, we are going to move onto outfitting your boat.

Over the next couple of articles, we will cover the necessities to get you and your boat on the water as well as safety equipment When you purchase a boat, very sel-

dom does it come with a paddle and life jacket. Yea, that’s right, two of the most important things you will put on your boat. So why is this?

Well, just as boats, there are a lot of different paddles and life jackets on the market to suit the needs of the kayak fisherman. Yes, it would be easy to go to your local store and find the coolest looking paddle to match your boat and of course you need a matching life vest. However, there is more to it than that.

To wear or not to wear a life vest?

I hope you know the answer to that question. Then again, it is not a life vest. Although it can potentially save your life, it is properly called a PFD or Personal Flotation Device. PFD’s come in many shapes, colors and sizes. The first thing to remember is if it is not comfortable, you will not use it! It does you no good strapped to your boat. If you flip in heavy wind or current, your boat will be out of reach in no time. Most people pur-

chase the traditional orange horse collar PFD that rides up under your chin and makes you look like choking pumpkin. You know the one. I would not be caught “dead” in that thing. Well thankfully, there are others. You will need to buy one that is sized for you in the chest as well as your weight. You will want it to fit snuggly but give you the freedom and room to paddle and cast your rod. The vest style PFD suits the paddler well. Some of them have a half back so it rides above the back of the seat therefore making it comfortable. They can also double as a fishing vest as they have many pockets for gear. Another style on the market and my personal choice is the self-inflating suspender style PFD. These are lightweight PFD’s that will either self-inflate on contact with water or can be manually inflated. PFD’s do very widely in price. Don’t skimp on your PFD. Up the creek without a paddle is a figure of speech but when it comes to a paddle, you need the right tool for the job. Too long, too short, too stiff, too heavy are all just things to consider. If your boat came with a paddle, put it in the haul as a backup and upgrade to a better paddle.

You won’t be sorry. There are many factors that come into play when choosing a paddle. Carbon fiber blades and shafts are pricey, but they are lighter and stronger over the cheaper plastic and aluminum ones.

You want to choose a paddle that fits your style of paddling. A high paddle entry requires a shorter length high-angle paddle. Opposite that is a low angle paddler that requires a longer length low-angle paddle.

These allow you to get the most out of your paddle stroke. Ideally, if you reach above your head and put your paddle on end, your fingers should curl at the knuckle over the top of the blade. There are numerous charts on the internet to assist you in choosing the right size for you.

As is my coffee, this article too is finished. As you can see, choosing the right PFD and paddle can make a big difference in your comfort level.

Again, I don’t know your budget, but these are items that you truly do get what you pay for. Next month we will dive into the topic of safety on and off the water with your kayak. Until next time, don’t be caught up the creek without a paddle or your PFD and fish on!

Surprising Winter is the Best Planting Time

I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth.

There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point.

Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature.

n January the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries submitted an application to NOAA Fisheries for an exempted fishing permit (EFP). NOAA Fisheries issues these permits to authorize activities, which would otherwise be prohibited by federal fishery regulations, for limited testing, data collection, exploratory fishing and other purposes. NOAA Fisheries invited the Gulf states to apply for EFPs to lead reef fish management activities in the Gulf of Mexico.

LDWF’s proposed EFP study would test a state-based management approach that would allow recreational harvest of red snapper in both state and federal waters off Louisiana during seasons set by the state.

LDWF would monitor landings through Louisiana’s existing recreational landings data collection program (LA Creel) and track fishing at oil and gas platforms, artificial reefs, and natural bottom habitat.

Participants would also have the option to test new, voluntary electronic reporting methods. Seasons would be closed when landings approach or reach Louisiana’s recreational quota.

Anyone with a Louisiana Saltwater Fishing License and a Recreational Offshore Fishing Permit (ROLP) would be eligible to participate in the study. Participants would be required to indicate their preference to participate in the study via their ROLP account, provide vessel registration information (per federal requirements), and abide by the federal minimum size limit (currently 16 inches) and two fish bag limit.

Telling Good Fish Stories

“W

hat did you catch today?” It is a question asked at every marina, boat ramp and backyard dock in the world every day of the fishing calendar.

This is your chance to hold up your catch, your fillet bag or your digital camera. It is a chance to reveal (or conceal) details regarding where and how you snared your prey.

It is also the chance to spin a wonderful tale of the leviathan that you fought for hours, had right next to the boat, and locked eyes with only to have it spit the hook/break the leader/get caught on the props/ pull you overboard… we’ve all been there!

Even the master angler and author Ernest Hemingway’s beloved “The Old Man and the Sea” is a fish tale, featuring the angler we all wish we were losing the fish we all wish we could catch.

The craft of embellishing your catch is a time-honored tradition; however as the curator of the FishingNosara Costa Rica Fishing Report, I take umbrage with the 21st century version of the fish story.

For the last seven years, I have documented every one of the 2,000plus trips run by the Nosara, Costa Rica based fishing team. Each report is meticulously checked for accuracy, including the angler’s names, trip date, fish caught, and (most importantly) photographs of the catches.

I also encourage my clients to offer their own stories from the fishing experience. In December 2017, we hosted Laura and Michael Price. Here’s what Laura wrote: “My husband and I went out today on the Explorer. We had an AMAZING time!!! We ended the day with six mahi mahi caught with one mahi mahi, one tuna and one marlin getting away. Phenomenal crew! We loved every minute of it!”

Here is another example, this time from angler Kevin Bahr: “We went with Capt. William and his mate Johnny. They were very professional and ready to ensure we had a successful outing on May 12. The weather was pretty sketchy, but we were able to locate the fish and ended up with a freezer full of ahi and mahi mahi. We cut our day short due to the weather, but our crew was willing to stay out longer if we wanted to. Despite the weather, it was a great day!”

Everyone knows that the Internet is a place where the line between fact and fiction is often blurry; from politics, to sports, to fishing—it is not always easy to separate the truth, from an opinion, from a sales pitch. Speargun Basics

L

ike enthusiasts of any sport, if you stay with spearfishing long enough, you become intimately familiar with every detail of your equipment. Here’s an overview of what a newbie might want to know before buying that first speargun.

Most spearguns are powered by bands, normally between one and three bands. There are two main types. The American style is recognized by the wood stock and is durable, sturdy and easy to load. The Eurogun style has a tubular shaped barrel, rear handle, and a thinner shaft well suited for freediving and smaller fish.

In either case, spearguns are equipped with a trigger mechanism. The back end of the shaft engages into the trigger mechanism. Once the bands are loaded, the trigger is pulled and the shaft flies out due to the pulling load of the bands. You do not want to overload a gun by putting more bands than what it’s designed for as it could make the gun inaccurate or unsafe.

Most spearguns now include a reel. This is especially needed if freediving and/or spearing larger fish, so the gun is not yanked out of your hands. If spearing a very large fish such as a tuna, which could spool your line in a matter of seconds, a line and float are required so the diver can pull it in from the surface.

Shafts come in different lengths and diameters to match the gun, and spearos look for the perfect shaft—one that will not bend, not rust, fly straight in the water, and with a barb that will hold the fish securely. It’s wise to always carry a spare shaft or two on the boat, in case a shaft gets bent or lost.

Like shafts, the bands are also replaced periodically, and it’s a good idea to carry spares in case one breaks. When bands get old, they start to get crack lines, or the wishbones can begin to fray, so it’s best to replace them before one snaps.

There’s a wider variety of speargun brands than ever on the

market. These include: Wong, AB Biller, Riffe, Hammerhead, Cressi, SEAC, Mares, Rob Allen, Koah, Mako, JBL and more. If you want help selecting your first gun, see if you can find a mentor to help you select one that matches local conditions.

Dive shops that specialize in spearfishing can also help. These include Austin’s in Miami, Fla.; Freedivers in Palm Beach, Fla.; James & Josephs in San Diego, Cali.; Freedive Shop in Sacramento, Cali.; and others. There are also Sheri Daye descends with a Wong speargun. custom gun builders who will work with you directly, give you advice, and design a gun to your specs—such as Wong Spearguns from Hawaii or Sea Sniper from California.
