Thus far, 2017 has been an unseasonable year for Canada. Central Canada has seen more rain while Western Canada has seen more colder, snowy days. While great for the ski hills, this weather still tests truck drivers to their limits on certain routes. Thankfully though, we are beginning to see more summer days. In our last issue, we talked about truck shows and how they’ve changed over the past couple of decades across North America. While some have dwindled, others have continued to grow and flourish. On June 10th and 11th, the trucking industry gathered at Tradex in Abbotsford, BC for the biannual APNA Truck Show, a show that has seen tremendous growth since its inception in 2010. For the 2017 APNA Show, JGK Media was a proud partner in raising over $43,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation. In addition, Hardev Bajwa walked away with a brand new trailer, donated by Hyundai Translead and Kingpin Trailers. Also following a story in our last issue that focused on Electronic Logging Devices, we talk about driver fatigue, a problem in our industry. It’s become common that time is associated with money. However, that shouldn’t mean putting yourself, and others, at risk, and this is especially true for transport drivers. The answer is simple – if you’re tired, stop and rest. Also, eat healthy, stay active and follow a good sleeping cycle. Not only will you feel better, you’ll accomplish more. With summer holidays upon us, enjoy time with family. And on the road, be safe!

So, once again, governments interested in “protecting” voters, offer to study the “problem” and make recommendations. When governments start to study anything, they form massively populated organizations, empires, that become self-serving and whether or not there is value in the organization, it maintains momentum forever. Yes, there were, and continue to be, horrible incidents in which people have died as a result of fatigue often exacerbated by the use of drugs or alcohol. Compliance has become one of those buzz words that has led to and developed its own industry. The use of drugs or alcohol by commercial drivers, as a result of education and compliance regulations, has become almost negligible. Drivers, who need to keep their jobs, simply will not put their jobs in jeopardy by using drugs or alcohol in case they are required to drive before the effects are cleared from their bodies. Compliance in and of itself makes infinite sense and has become as necessary for a trucking company as breathing for humans. Compliance allows companies to absolutely prove beyond a shadow of a doubt they take safety seriously, thus mitigating any legal problems caused by unnecessary incidents that have led to death or maiming. No matter how compliant a truck driver is, there will be times that he or she will not be able to perform up to maximum hours of service. Human drivers are subject to headaches and even seasonal allergies that can make being fully alert constantly impossible. Human drivers still do not have the ability to turn the sleep switch on and off at will, and frankly they never will. If a human driver can’t find the ability to rest and sleep, then for sure, the next day is going to be challenge. Hours of Service is no longer the maximum number of hours a driver can work; it is now virtually a mandate that those hours available while remaining compliant are the minimum hours available while being compliant. Maximums are also minimums. There is no such thing as a driver being able to determine his or her own state of tiredness or alertness. Drivers must comply to the maximums which is also the minimum, with no if’s, but’s, or maybe’s. Fatigue is still an issue but it’s exacerbated because of compliance, which makes no sense. The law of unintended consequence has reared its ugly head. How can rules and regulations designed specifically to prevent fatigue work to the detriment of an individual’s well-being? Specifically, the wellbeing of the truck driver strictly complying with all the rules and regulations. Rules and regulations aren’t necessarily the problem, but certainly some of the interpretation of the rules by some are. The ELD, Electronic Logging Device, will certainly assist in accurately tracking a truck driver’s work, which is a good thing. What’s not so good is that ELD’s are precise and not open to tampering. Some of the rules and regulations need to be changed to permit a driver from working beyond their capacity to work. Drivers do not need to be told when they are tired; they need the ability to take a nap when they need the nap, regardless of what time of day it is. The ability for a driver to stop and have a rest that accounts for the total number of hours of sleep in any 24 hour period while waiting out rush hour, for example, would make for much safer roads, ease the congestion in major metropolitan areas, and make for a much more rested commercial driver. There used to be a regulation where a driver could split his or her sleep into smaller chunks of rest and smaller chunks of work. Some would work four hours, sleep four hours while others would 10

Then, some well-meaning civil servant decided the hours of service needed to be a strictly interpreted rule that every single human driver would comply, regardless of how they functioned, how they felt physically or mentally, and in essence, turning drivers into robots in human bodies. The ELD is going to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Allow the truck driver to use the ELD to his or her benefit while remaining absolutely compliant and while working productively for the maximum/minimum hours available to them every day. If properly used, the ELD could be the best tool for the driver to work to his or her best efficiency within their particular situation each day. The ELD could make for the happiest, safest drivers on the planet if the rules and regulations are modified to ensure the human factor is respected and that daily modifications in ability are the norm and not the exception. were declined because no assets were in their name and they had declared a low income. The bank called me after and said if the client had assets in their own name, they may have over looked the low income, but with both low income AND no assets, they declined the deal. A reasonable amount of income must be declared on your income taxes. The banks will look at the previous two years. The suggestion offered by the bank was to do a mortgage or loan preapproval prior to looking for a home. And to also consult with the mortgage broker or banker you are using prior to the application to make sure enough income is declared, so that you don’t run in to issues after. Lines of credit are a big point of contention from the banks perspective. The words said were, “What is everyone’s obsession with giant unsecured lines of credit and why do they have so many of them?” They said it’s a common and large issue. It actually affects what the client can qualify for. So the home you want, may now be out of your price range due to the lines of credit. The bank suggests working on paying off
unsecured debt in advance of doing an application for a mortgage or loan. That way, you won’t be disappointed and have to get a smaller home. The item that seemed to be the most annoying thing from the banks perspective was long trips overseas, and not paying the bills while gone. So in other words, their credit is now bad. If you plan to go away for several months, that is fine, but you must make arrangements to pay your bills on time while you’re gone. Keep your credit intact no matter how long you are away. It will remain on your record for seven years, and banks are not very forgiving or like to hear excuses such as, “I was in India.” There are no excuses. Take responsibility for your credit and keep it intact. I hope this helps you in your future applications. Please make sure to declare enough income on your taxes, declare rental income in your taxes, have assets in your name, pay off the unsecured lines of credit in advance and keep your credit intact especially while travelling for extended periods of time. If you follow these recommendations, then it will be a much easier process when applying for loans and mortgages. Mitchell and Bosch Collaborate on Diagnostic Systems
itchell is collaborating with Bosch Automotive Service Solutions in North America to deliver the Mitchell Diagnostics system, which is designed specifically for the collision repair and automotive claims markets. The Mitchell Diagnostics system is expected to be available by June 30. “We researched a wide variety of scan tools on the market and found that the Bosch scan tools provide best-in-class coverage and modern technology, and are backed by great service and support,” said Jack Rozint, vice president of sales and service at Mitchell International. “In addition, Bosch scan tools have a combination of features that provide outstanding capabilities for collision repairers, including a tool that can do Electronic Control Unit (ECU) reprogramming, as well as optional accessories that include a target system for recalibrating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) kit. We are excited to partner with Bosch given its leadership and expertise in this market.” The patent-pending Mitchell Diagnostics system validates that the VIN on the scan report matches the VIN on the vehicle from which data is pulled. This scan report can be used to support collision repair billing, and offers both carriers and repairers a record showing that the vehicle had a clean scan at the completion of the collision repair process. “Mitchell’s reputation and success among information providers
for being a leader in advanced repair technologies made it the ideal choice to bring diagnostic solutions to the collision repair industry,” said Stefan Schmitt, vice president of engineering and product area diagnostics at Bosch Automotive Service Solutions. “Working with Mitchell will integrate our scan tool directly into the workflow applications used by collision repairers and insurance carriers, which will assist in the diagnostic portion of collision repairs.” The system may be used to add scan reports to any of the industry’s major estimating, collision repair management and claims processing systems. These scan reports can be saved as PDF documents and dropped into a folder used for vehicle damage images by the user of the Mitchell Diagnostics system. Customers that utilize Mitchell Estimating advanced estimating system and RepairCenter shop management software will benefit from enhanced integration capabilities. “One of the challenges we have is documenting, confirming, and getting compensated for the scanning that we do in-house,” said Bill Lawrence of 1st Certified Collision Group, a multisite collision repair operation in Southern California. “With the Mitchell Diagnostics system we’ll be able to demonstrate via validation documentation that the work was performed on the vehicle with the VIN matching the insurers’ claim, and we can easily attach that to our repair order and the carrier’s claim file.”

Air Disc Brakes STOP Vehicles Faster Heavy-duty truck brake technology has advanced over the years and continues to be an important safety feature for trucks and trailers. All brakes are not created equal, however, so it is important to understand the differences. There are two types of air brakes: disc brakes and drum brakes. Though both types use the same principles of friction to slow a vehicle down, air disc brakes have many advantages over drum brakes. The trucking industry is trending toward air disc brakes because safety, efficiency, and in some situations, a lower total cost of ownership. Disc brakes enhance safety by providing shorter stopping distances than drum brakes and improving trailer in-line braking stability. The stopping distance for disc brakes can be 25 to 30 feet less than drum brakes, depending on tires, speed, conditions, and the braking system on the tractor. The stopping power is noticeably greater when both the tractor and trailer are equipped with air disc brakes, particularly when the vehicle is traveling at increased speeds. Disc brakes require less maintenance than drum brakes, because they provide stable and uniform braking, which helps brake

components last longer. This means they provide superior braking efficiency and remain in optimum adjustment. Additionally, service intervals are generally longer for disc brakes than drum brakes, and service technicians can change disc brake pads in 25% of the time it takes to change a drum brake shoe. While disc brakes typically have a higher upfront cost than drum brakes, they can have a lower total cost of ownership. Consider the Following Factors: • Longer service intervals and shorter service times equal lower maintenance costs and more uptime for the trailer. • Rust jacking, which is common on drum brake shoes, is virtually eliminated on disc brakes. • Disc brakes eliminate the need for S-cams, slack adjusters, brake drums, brake shoes and bushings, rollers, and springs in a parts maintenance inventory. • Disc brakes reduce the chance of CSA brake violations for brakes out of adjustment, which can put the trailer out of service. The Bottom Line:
Though the upfront cost may be higher, spec’ing a trailer with air disc brakes can increase the overall safety and efficiency of the trailer. Drum Brakes vs. Disc Brakes: How They Work Drum brakes have friction material riveted to brake shoes. When the brake is applied, the brake shoes push outward, rubbing against the inside of the drum and slowing the wheel. Over time, the friction material wears away and the automatic slack adjuster compensates for the loss of brake shoe lining thickness. Eventually, the slack adjuster reaches a limit and the brake shoes must be replaced. Disc brakes have friction pads that float inside the caliper adjacent to a large metal disc called a rotor. Instead of a brake drum attached to the wheel hub, a rotor is attached to the hub. A caliper is contained on the brake carrier with its own brake chamber. When the brake is applied, the caliper squeezes the brake pads against the rotating rotor, slowing the wheel. Since the rotor is exposed to outside air, it is able to cool quickly, which decreases its tendency to overheat or cause fading.

tarting in 2006, Canada’s 911 Ride is a charity event that was inspired by America 911 at Ground Zero. Canada 911 was originally intended to support and raise money for families of fallen emergency service personnel, but has since also been known to provide publicly accessible defibrillators and help to children of violent crimes. The event consists of up to 120 civilian riders being accompanied by 40-50 Metro police, OPP, and York police riders, as well as officer riders from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island along the route. The riders make their way through various communities as a collective whole, with support from various emergency service departments and residents of those communities. Every year is a new route, meaning every year is a new community helped. Jim Adamson, founding member and national vicepresident of the foundation, took the time to meet with XTL and share some stories of all the good Canada 911 has done in the past and give a better understanding of how XTL’s involvement will help. One of XTL’s own loyal drivers, Bob Beal, who has been with the company for 45 years, originally introduced XTL to Jim and the Canada 911 Ride. Just Say NO to Commercializing Rest Areas
diverse coalition of stakeholders, ranging from restaurants and fuel retailers to city governments and trucking firms, have written a letter urging key lawmakers to oppose efforts to commercialize Interstate rest areas as Congress considers infrastructure legislation. Two U.S. Representatives’ recent proposal to allow the sale of food, fuel and other commercial services at Interstate rest areas would drain local businesses of customers, communities of much-needed jobs, and city governments of critical tax revenue by putting established businesses in direct competition with state governments, the letter states. At the same time, it would give the state an unfair competitive advantage by granting the state direct access to highway motorists, the groups said. “Congress effectively privatized highway services in 1960, when Congress prohibited states from offering commercial services at rest areas along the Interstate Highway System specifically so that private sector entities would grow and provide services to the traveling public,” said NATSO President and CEO Lisa Mullings. “Established businesses including travel plazas, convenience stores, restaurants and hotels are already meeting the needs of highway travellers. “If the government gets in the business of selling food and fuel or other commercial services, local communities will suffer as tax revenues shift to the state; hard-working business owners will lose their customer base; blind entrepreneurs will be out of work and truck drivers will have a harder time finding a safe place to rest. Commercializing Interstate rest areas would create far more problems than it will solve,” Mullings said. In many rural communities located near Interstates, gas stations, restaurants, convenience stores, truckstops, and hotels represent the largest local taxpayers, contributing more than $22.5 billion in state and local taxes. These funds help support schools, police and fire departments and other vital public services. “By commercializing rest areas, cities and towns stand to lose critical revenue used for funding road maintenance, building schools and keeping communities safe,” said Clarence E. Anthony, CEO and executive director of the National League of Cities. “Such a move would risk flatlining local property tax revenues, especially impacting the hundreds of small cities and rural communities whose economies depend on highway travellers.” Lea Dias, President of the National Council of State Agencies for the Blind, said, “NCSAB is extremely concerned about the implications of rest area commercialization for thousands of small family businesses, including those owned and operated by blind entrepreneurs. Under the Randolph-Sheppard Act, a federal law that supports entrepreneurial opportunities for persons who are blind, permits are awarded to blind vendors to manage vending locations at rest areas along federal interstates. Commercialization of these rest areas would result in significant loss of sales opportunities at 34

highway exits, as well as for rest area vending machines, that would be unable to compete with larger rest area food services. “This economic disruption to small family businesses, including those owned by entrepreneurs who are blind, and to the communities that they live in, would likely shift economic activity from small businesses to large corporations,” Dias said. “It would also shift tax revenue from cities and counties, without necessarily increasing
net jobs, sales, or taxes paid. As the agencies that administer the Randolph-Sheppard Act, we urge policymakers to examine carefully the impact on small businesses, including those owned by blind entrepreneurs, of commercialization of rest areas along federal interstates. “There is already an unacceptably high unemployment rate of approximately 70 percent among blind Americans,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “Congress should not contribute to the problem by putting the blind entrepreneurs who service rest area vending machines out of work.” Congress reaffirmed its position on this issue as recently as 2012, when the Senate voted 86 to 12 to uphold the longstanding federal law prohibiting the sale of food, fuel and other convenience items from Interstate rest areas. The letters to Congress, one to the House and one to the Senate, were signed by NATSO, Asian American Hotel Owners Association, International Franchise Association, National Association of Convenience Stores, National Automatic Merchandising Association, National Council of Chain Restaurants, National Federation of the Blind, National Franchisee Association, National League of Cities, National Restaurant Association, National Tank Truck Carriers, Petroleum Marketers Association of America, and the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America.

Great Dane Introduces Stronger Rear Impact Guard
he Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given Great Dane its new TOUGHGUARD award, which recognizes rear underride guards that are designed to help prevent a range of deadly underride crashes. The IIHS, which is known for its stringent vehicle safety testing, performed three test modes: full-width, 50-percent overlap and 30-percent overlap. Great Dane’s guard has passed all three tests. Because safety is its first priority, Great Dane took a proactive
approach to enhance its underride guard, or rear impact guard, to make it both stronger and safer during rear-impact collisions. The new guard is designed to help stop vehicles from sliding beneath a trailer in a rear-impact crash, and that can help prevent injuries. To ensure a higher level of safety for all Great Dane reefers, dry vans and platform trailers, Great Dane will include the new rear impact guard as standard equipment on all of its trailer models beginning later this year.

In addition, due to the new rear impact guard’s bolt-on design, Great Dane will offer a retrofit option to upgraded rear impact guards on 2007 and later models. The retrofit can be installed easily at any authorized Great Dane service center. “We are very pleased that our new rear impact guard has passed the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 30-percent overlap test and received the TOUGHGUARD award, in addition to having previously passed the full-width and 50-percent overlap tests,” said Chris Lee, Vice President of Engineering. “More importantly, however, we are confident that our trailers provide an additional level of safety for those on the road.” Great Dane’s new rear impact guard exceeds current rules in place in the U.S. and Canada as well as proposed new requirements from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that would essentially align U.S. underride regulations with Canadian regulations. “There was no requirement or incentive, other than enhancing the safety of our products, for Great Dane to make this update,” Lee said. “It is important for us to promote safety, and we do that by including this new design as a standard on all of our trailer product lines – reefers, dry vans and flatbeds.”

APNA Truck Show 2017 Sets New Records

he 2017 APNA Truck Show continued the trend of being the largest truck show in Wester Canada by setting new records. Everyone expected a great show and after two days, those expectations were met and exceeded. The management team of the APNA Truck Show is proud to report that the 2017 show was a great success, breaking all previous records. The first day started as a soggy one, but the afternoon brought sun and smiles. Crowds gathered, exhibitor booths were full, and when visitors left, there were smiles all around. This year, the biennial show, which took place at Tradex in Abbotsford, BC on June 10-11, set an all-time attendance records, with over 11,500 registered attendees and over 3,000 attendees who were let in due to the huge lines. Huge lines tend to be a common place at the APNA Truck Show, both inside and outside of the show. With almost 15,000 attendees, this year’s show surpassed the previous record set in 2015. In addition, exhibitor presence increased by 50%, again solidifying APNA’s popularity in Western Canada. Since 2010, the APNA Truck Show become to be known as the most anticipated truck show in Western Canada, with exhibitors and attendees coming from as far away as California and Toronto. This year, in conjunction with SafetyDriven, a Speaker Series was added, which included talks by retired CFL All-Star Shae Emery and dietician/media personality Diana Steele, as well as a COR Panel discussion, facilitated by Jag Dhatt and featured Earl Galavan, Colette Mondin, Brad Wilson, and Laurel O’Donnell. Last year, the APNA Truck Show gave away a custom-built Harley Davidson motorcycle valued at over $17, 000. This year, in association with Kingpin Trailers and Hyundai Translead, APNA Truck Show was proud to give away a 53-feet dry van trailer, valued at over $40, 000. Did we mention that the Michelin man came all the way from Montreal to be at the APNA Truck Show? Children met and hugged the Michelin man, who said very little but smiled a lot. ruckers have a few months to get those brakes in order. Brake Safety Day is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, according to a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance press
release. Inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. Inspections conducted will include inspection of brakesystem components to identify loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system components. ABS malfunction indicator lamps are also checked. Inspectors will measure pushrod stroke, where applicable. Vehicles with defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will be placed out of service. In the 10 jurisdictions using performance-based brake testing (PBBT) equipment, vehicle braking efficiency will be measured. PBBT systems include a slow speed roller dynamometer that measures total vehicle weight and total brake force from which braking efficiency is determined. The minimum braking efficiency for trucks is 43.5 percent, required by U.S. federal regulation and
the CVSA out-of-service criteria. Law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes, and brake-system and antilock braking system violations as part of the CVSA Operation Airbrake Program. Brake Safety Day activities seek to educate drivers, mechanics, owner-operators and
others on the importance of proper brake maintenance, operation and performance with outreach and educational efforts. Brake-related violations composed the largest percentage (representing 45.7 percent) of all out-of-service violations cited during Operation Airbrake’s companion International Roadcheck campaign in 2016, which focused on inspections of both commercial motor vehicles and drivers.
