For a long time, people have believed that you are either born a genius or you aren’t. However, chess superstar Susan Polgar has proven that genius can be developed like any other talent.

Unit

Recreation

Susan’s father was a psychologist who spent years researching child prodigies. He believed anyone could become a genius if they specialized in a single subject. So, when Susan started to show an aptitude for chess at the age of four, he decided that he had found the field he would create a genius in. Susan’s training with her father caused her brain to strengthen in ways helpful for chess. Her abilities became so great that Susan was the top female player in the world and considered a chess genius by the age of 15. She later became the first ever female grandmaster. Susan is a living example of her father’s belief that “genius equals work and fortunate circumstances.” Whether you put your efforts into chess or something else that you love, you too have genius potential.

1. Which of the following is NOT true about Susan Polgar’s father? (A) He worked as a psychologist. (B) He sent Susan to a special school for child prodigies. (C) He put a lot of effort into researching child prodigies. (D) He wanted to train Susan to be great at a single thing. 2. The word “prodigy” in the second paragraph probably has the same meaning as . (A) grandmaster

(B) scientist

(C) champion

(D) genius

3. What can be inferred from this passage? (A) Under the right conditions, anyone can become a genius. (B) Women can play chess better than men. (C) All chess players must be geniuses. (D) Parents should educate their children themselves. 43
