It was a beautiful day to honor the U.S. Military Veterans who live or have lived in Sunny Isles Beach with more than 150 people in attendance. The Sunny Isles Beach Police Honor Guard presented the colors and Chief Fred Maas led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Mayor Norman S. • • LIFE IN THE CITY • • Gift List BY BARI AUERBACH

Thanks to the city’s financial strength, Sunny Isles Beach can afford to give residents the gift of “the highest quality of life” yearround. The city’s budget funds everything from capital improvements to cultural events – but wouldn’t it be nice if gifts like these could also be on the city’s list…

STAIRMASTERS AND TREADMILLS – The city has a convenient shuttle bus system and very comfortable bus benches – but it would be great if cardio equipment could also be acquired so while waiting for the bus to come, you could get in a quick workout! This innovative exercise initiative would surely help make Sunny Isles Beach one of the “fittest” model cities in America! UNLIMITED TEXT MESSAGING – City parks already have free WiFi, but if it was also free for people to send unlimited text messages about how wonderful life is in Sunny Isles Beach, it could be the marketing coup of the millennium! The only catch is, everyone would have to learn new text messaging acronyms like: WYWHISS (wish you were here instead of shoveling snow); MTIBTY (my tan is better than yours); and DYWYCWTTB? (don’t you wish you could walk to the beach?) VIDEO IPODS – It would also be well worth the expenditure if the city bought thousands of video iPods to distribute around the world - playing nothing but documentaries about how

wonderful it is to live and vacation in Sunny Isles Beach – Florida’s Riviera. The City Manager could even apply for a publicity grant from Apple to help pay for the effort to download a never-ending stream of even more residents and visitors!

TICKETS TO BASEBALL GAMES – If the city invested in purchasing Marlins season tickets for all residents, this could help increase attendance at the new stadium next season. Then to show appreciation, the team could agree to help coach little leaguers at Pelican Community Park or even decide to change their name again from the Miami Marlins to the Sunny Isles Beach Marlins! GAS REBATES – Instead of lowering property tax millage rates when budget revenues increase, the city could fund gasoline rebates so everyone scrounging for loose change under their sofas could afford to keep paying pumped up prices…Better yet, the city could monetarily reward residents who start taking the city’s shuttle bus and give up driving to help alleviate traffic on Collins Avenue. ICE CREAM FOR EVERYONE – Even though it’s cold up north, it still feels like summer in South Florida and studies show heat can often lead to “hot tempers” and an increase in crime. So to keep things calm, cool and collected in Sunny Isles Beach, the city should consider creating a great gift entitled “Ice Cream Sundays.” Once a week on Sundays, all residents and visitors would be invited to enjoy free ice cream to perpetuate the city’s reputation for being home of “the sweet life!”

Giving thanks is instinctive Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING A recent front page story reported a touching story about a female humpback whale that had become entangled in a web of crab pots and lines. She was weighed down by hundreds of pounds of these traps and by hundreds of yards of lines that were wrapped tightly, completely around her body including her tail. There was even a line that was entangled in her mouth. She was struggling just to stay afloat. She was spotted near the Golden Gate Bridge by a fisherman who called for help. When a rescue team arrived from an environmental group, they decided that the best and perhaps the only way to save her was for the members of the team to dive into the water and begin to untangle her by hand. They worked for hours with special curved knives and eventually they were able to free her.

When she was free, the divers say that the whale swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, and pushed them gently around as she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredible and beautiful experience of their lives. The rescuer who cut the rope out of her mouth said that her eyes were following him the entire time. He said it was a life-altering experience and he will never be the same. There is a lesson to be learned this Thanksgiving Day from that whale. She could have left after she was freed but she didn’t. She made sure that everyone who was part of her rescue received an individual expression of her gratitude. If animals can be thankful and show their appreciation, it behooves human beings to do the same to each other. There is no question that at some time in your life, you too were rescued by the kindness of others. You may even owe someone your life. Take this Day to say, “Thank you.” Patricia Frank is a licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864 or/and 212-308-0309.

A poisonous political campaign can be fatal

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS The presidential candidate pleaded for “greater civility in political discourse by both the media and the political parties.” Those were not the words of Herman Cain concerning recent allegations, but were said by Andrew Jackson, during the poisonous, scurrilous presidential campaign in 1828. According to presidential historian William A. DeGregorio, at age 17, a vivacious Rachel Donelson married and lived with Lewis Robards in Kentucky. “Insanely jealous, Robards wrongfully accused Rachel of infidelities with other men. Despite her pleas of innocence, he ordered Rachel to return to her family in Nashville, Tennessee until he called for her.” Soon after Rachel rejoined her mother, now a widow, Jackson arrived in Nashville to practice law and became a boarder at the Donelson home. Eventually Rachel and Jackson fell in love, however, “when Robards came to Nashville to claim Rachel, she dutifully

returned with him to Kentucky. Rachel soon found Robards had done nothing to curb his rages of jealousy. When told of her unhappiness, Jackson raced to Kentucky and rescued her.” In December 1790, at Robards request, “the state legislature passed an enabling act permitting him to sue for divorce. Mistaking this preliminary action for a final divorce decree, Jackson, who as a lawyer should have known better, married Rachel.” Robards then sued Rachel for divorce on the grounds of adultery with Jackson; the final decree issued in September 1793. A furious Jackson and a mortified Rachel then learned that their marriage was not legal. They immediately remarried in 1794 but that did not end their troubles. “Scurrilous attacks on Rachel’s character poisoned the presidential campaign of 1828.” Although Jackson tried to keep the vicious, scandalous charges away from his wife, Rachel, with previous heart trouble, realized she was being “raked over in the national press.” Rachel became depressed, grew ill and died suddenly on December 22, 1828. Jackson, who defeated President John Quincy Adams, held his political opponents responsible for her death. At her burial, President-elect Jackson vowed, “I can and do forgive all my enemies but all those vile wretches who slandered her must look to God for mercy.”

“YOUR AD HERE — BIG YELLOW SCHOOL BUS” BY KAREN ARONOWITZ, President, United Teachers of Dade

Imagine the yellow school bus so covered with ads that we smack right into the back of one, our attention diverted by 3D, strobe-lit, hologram movie ads, flashing, pulsing lights for caffeine-laden power drinks, logoencrusted sportswear, and other trinkets and trash we sell to move our economy. It’s the American way! All supposedly G-rated, although what passes for G in our overly sexualized consumerism makes the letter blush like a scarlet A. Still, our schools are so cashstrapped from the decrease in funding to public education that school boards are putting out the for-sale sign themselves. No space need be uncovered. Will students pay any attention to the work teachers place on white boards, smart boards, or, in a few impoverished public schools, chalk boards, when bells and whistles from advertisers compete for their attention? It is not philanthropy that drives companies into our schools. It’s

the thrill of a captive audience, an audience that will have no Parental Control button to screen what’s seen in a school, an audience that is just learning to think about the the credibility of a source, an audience that, by age and maturity, will believe what is placed before them. One does not challenge authority until enough learning has taken place. We will abandon four-year olds and fourteen-year-olds to the hands of advertisers. I suppose the next step is to make each teacher responsible for selling enough advertising to “endow” their position. A sort of commission sales requirement to add to the idea of “pay-for-performance.” It’s not surprising that the hallowed halls of our schools will be turned into the inside of a casino, where the lights are low, there are no windows or clocks so that no one knows whether it’s night or day, and flashing, strobing lights, bells and whistles convince even the losers they’ve won. Lock up your children, folks. Throw them an iPad, a Twinkie, and a bottle of water and call it home schooling. You might not be there, but it could be a safer space than school. The United Teachers of Dade represents 35,000 teachers and school support personnel in MDCPS. The union is committed to being a leader in creating public school reform, fostering a quality public education for all students and elevating the professional status of teachers, paraprofessionals, office employees, and all school support personnel.

request for transfer of development rights (TDR’s) to Porsche Design Residences, owner of the property at 18555 Collins Avenue (the Golden Nugget site), for a 57story, 132-unit condominium building promised to be “the jewel in the crown of Sunny Isles Beach” and “the top of the top.” Anticipated to be a catalyst for elevating property values throughout the city, Porsche Design Tower will feature a revolutionary, ocean view glass elevator system heralded as “the first of its kind” taking residences, still inside their cars, directly up to their unit and designated robotic parking space. According to developer Gil Dezer, “The tower is being designed by Germany-based Porsche Design Group and The Sieger Suarez Architectural Group. The Dezers and architect Charles Sieger, have already built and designed some of the most successful and luxurious oceanfront developments in Sunny Isles Beach including Trump Palace, Trump Royale and Trump International Hotel.” During a presentation of schematics to the City Commission, the cylinder-shaped tower was described as having a “clean, slick, elegant, timeless design” and very unique state-of-the-art features. The ultra-luxurious condo “palaces” ranging from 3,800 to over 9,500 square feet with spectacular ocean views and opulent amenities such as swimming pools on terraces and fireplaces may sell for as much as $9 million. “Porsche Design residences represent the merging of Porsche Design technology; the outstanding architectural plans of Sieger Suarez; and the Dezers’ proven expertise in marketing luxury oceanfront condominiums within a project that will lead Sunny Isles Beach forward in the new economic realities of this decade,” Dezer says. “Porsche Design is the forerunner of the new type of Sunny Isles Beach development that will generate millions of dollars in real estate tax revenues and disposable income to support the many city services provided to Sunny Isles Beach residents. The Porsche Design development team intends to break ground in early 2012 with the demolition of the existing Golden Nugget building.” During the Commission meeting, it was noted terms included in the resolution

approving the Porsche Design project include developer contributions totaling nearly $4 million for amenities benefitting the community including beach access easements; compatibility with Collins Avenue streetscape designs; and a 10,000 square foot public oceanfront park. Mayor Norman S. Edelcup noted, “This is a landmark project and we look forward to seeing another great building from the Dezer family in Sunny Isles Beach.” ‘PAVING THE WAY’ In an effort to be proactive and pave the way for the most desirable new developments in Sunny Isles Beach, the City Commission recently passed an ordinance intended to help perpetuate prosperity. Mayor Edelcup emphasized, “The city isn’t waiting for the Federal government to bring stimulus [for new development]…We’re taking positive steps to bring new, wonderful construction back to our beautiful city.” At the Nov. 17 City Commission, an ordinance passed on second reading providing for transferring building heights within the Sunny Isles Boulevard southedge street type within the Town Center District; and amending a section of the Mixed Use-Resort District (MU-R) to modify Floor Area Ratio bonuses, establish Federal Aviation Administration restrictions as height limitations [increasing from

a maximum of 550 feet to 649 feet]; and to permit connecting bridges between certain adjacent properties. Attorney Cliff Schulman representing the Trump Group [of Williams Island fame] explained, “None of these changes add density or intensity…it allows larger units and gives architects added flexibility. The Trump Group [is planning to develop] The Mansions of Acqualina with average unit sizes of 4,000 square feet and 8,000 square foot penthouses - so there will be a significant improvement in tax revenues collected by the city. A skywalk to integrate [the existing Acqualina tower with the new building is also being designed].” ‘ELEVATING SALES’ Overall, the South Florida condo boom has generated nearly $4.1 billion in developer sales of newly created units in Sunny Isles Beach as of Sept. 30, 2011, according to a CondoVultures.com study reporting: “Between 2003 and the third quarter of 2011, developers sold more than 9.2 million square feet of condo space in Sunny Isles Beach. Since 2003, developers have brought 27 developments with nearly 6,400 units to the Sunny Isles Beach market; and prior to the boom, developers built nearly 60 projects with 12,000 units in the city.

Honor Veterans by Honoring Our Commitment to Them BY DEBBIE WASSERMAN

Congresswoman

Each November, we gather together to honor all of the American soldiers who have defended our great nation over the course of our 235-year history. Since our nation’s founding, men and women have answered their country’s call to service and defended the principles of liberty espoused in our Constitution and Declaration of Independence. It is only fitting that the same month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving we also celebrate those who served our country in uniform. Just as we must never forget their service and sacrifice, we must also stand firm in our commitment to help veterans as they return to civilian life. As the Iraq war draws to a close this year and as we begin to transition from Afghanistan, our nation will welcome even more of these brave men and women to the already 23 million veterans in America. In Florida alone there are more than 1.6 million veterans, and as our men and women return home, we must ensure that they have access to the help they need to transition to civilian life, whether it is finding a job or securing health care and housing, or just getting back into the daily routine of family life. After serving our country honorably and courageously, the last thing our veterans should have to worry about when they finally come home to their loved ones is whether or not they will be able to find a job. That is why I am proud to be a cosponsor of H.R. 1941, the Hiring Heroes Act of 2011, which would help get veterans back to work. I also applaud President Barack Obama’s expanded commitment to alleviate unemployment among our veterans, and to support our military families. The President recently announced new commitments to service members and veterans as part of a comprehensive plan to lower veteran unemployment. This plan includes: * Returning Heroes and Wounded Warrior Tax Credits within the American Jobs Act for businesses that hire unemployed veterans and veterans with service-connected disabilities. These tax credits would be worth up to $5,600 and $9,600, respectively, reducing the cost for businesses to hire a veteran.

* The Department of Labor initiated a new online resource: My Next Move for Veterans, which links veterans with civilian jobs for which they are well qualified. * The Obama Administration has also launched the Veterans Job Bank, a National Resource Directory, which is an easy-touse tool to help veterans find job postings from companies looking to hire them. Right here in Florida we need to work together to encourage South Florida businesses to make hiring veterans a greater priority. Earlier this month, I met with John Alfano of Pembroke Pines, the president of Doris Italian Market & Bakery, and Greg Ramos of Weston, the owner of Sources4, and we talked about the American Jobs Act and how tax credits for hiring veterans could help them expand their businesses. With these recent announcements, now this can become a win-win reality for small businesses looking to expand and veterans looking for employment. To help South Florida veterans looking for work, I’ll be co-hosting a Jobs Fair for veterans with Congressman Ted Deutch Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Fort Lauderdale Armory from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Veterans and military families will be able to learn more about employment opportunities in the area and have a chance to meet with potential employers. We will also have people on hand to talk about how to enroll in the VA health system and learn about educational opportunities and other benefits. America’s brave men and women in uniform should be able to count on the full and unwavering support of their government, whether they are active duty, or returning to civilian life. We must honor their service and give back to those who fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America. I am proud to be an advocate for the people of South Florida, and my office is always open to you. You can reach us in Pembroke Pines at 954-437-3936, in Aventura at 305-936-5724 and in Washington, DC at 202-225-7931. I’m also available online at http://wassermanschultz.house.gov <http://wassermanschultz.house.gov>, on Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/pages/RepD e b b i e - W a s s e r m a n Schultz/88904724121> , and Comcast-ondemand customers can stay up to date with my work for you on channel 890.

and talking about the Commission’s efforts which made the wall and the park possible. He extended his good wishes to all, thanking them for attending the first annual celebration for our City’s veterans. Third graders from Ms. Caryn Snyder’s class at the Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 displayed boxes that each student had decorated and filled with essentials and goodies for our active duty military. Their teacher stated that she wanted the children to know why they were off from school on November 11 every year. The class also wrote original poems and read them as a thank you to all our military branches at home and abroad. The Chief facilitated the third grade presentation as the children came up one by one to read. The children seemed to have a grasp of what this day meant to so many in our country. Former Commissioner Gerry Goodman spoke about our Veterans sacrifices and the necessity of our country to take care of those men and women throughout their

lives, especially the wounded and disabled military personnel. He urged the crowd to visit their local VA Hospital and volunteer to brighten someone’s day. He then read the names of all the Veterans who were placed on the wall at our Heritage Park opening on June 18 this year and then read the names added for this November 11th Veterans Day Celebration. When the ceremony ended many veterans took the opportunity to snap pictures of their engraved names and their families at the wall. Participants gathered at the pavilion for food and fellowship, lingering to talk to those they knew and making new friends too. Anyone wishing to be added to the U.S. Military Veterans Wall next November 11th should complete an application and return before September 1, 2012. The form is available on www.sibfl.net or at the Government Center 4th floor reception area. Please bring proof of residency such as your SIB Resident ID or a utility bill and your proof of Honorable Military Discharge.

WINTER FEST, from page 1 Lighting Ceremony, other activities taking place are the awards presentation for the youth sports program participants (cheerleading, soccer, baseball, and basketball), as well as a performance by the cheerleading squad. Ford has a winner in 2012 Boss 302 Mustang Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The “Boss” is back, and it’s every bit as good as the original! I’m talking about the legendary Boss 302 Mustang that first appeared in 1969 billed as “the best all-around road-going performance machine ever created by Ford Motor Company.” Now, 43 years later, Ford engineers have crafted another one. The 2012 Boss 302 in essence is a reengineered 2011 Mustang GT, with the acceleration, handling, braking and top speed all equally matched for perfect balance and excellent handling. It is a factorybuilt racecar that is equally efficient as an every day street car. For power, the new Boss 302 has the same 5.0 liter 412 hp engine that powers the Mustang GT, but with intake and camshaft revisions that bring it up to 444 hp and 380 pounds-feet of torque, yet delivering a smooth idle and low-end torque for comfortable

around-town driving. It has a race-inspired clutch with upgraded friction materials and a short-throw, close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. Power is delivered to a 3.73 ratio rear axle using carbon fiber plates in the limited-slip differential to improve torque handling and longevity. All Boss models are lowered by 11 millimeters at the front and one millimeter in the rear. At the same time, the suspension system has been further refined and given higher-rate coil springs on all four corners, stiffer suspension bushings, a larger-diameter rear stabilizer bar, and adjustable shocks and struts. Working in concert with the suspension upgrades, the new Boss 302 has unique, lightweight 19-inch black alloy racing wheels in staggered widths — 9 inches up front, 9.5 inches in the rear. The Pirelli PZero summer tires are sized specifically for each end of the vehicle, with the front wheels getting 255/40ZR-19 tires and the rear getting wider 285/35ZR-19 rubber. The combined power, suspension and tire package lets the new Boss clock a screaming top speed of 155 mph. Changes to the Mustang Boss exterior are subtle, but evoke the 1969 Boss in a

Boss 302 fascia and grille have blocked-off fog light openings and aggressive lower splitter. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

contemporary way. Each new Boss has either a black or white roof panel, coordinated to the color of the side C-stripe, while exterior colors are offered in Competition Orange, Performance White, Kona Blue Metallic, Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallic and Race Red. The unique fascia and grille are highlighted by the blocked-off fog lamp openings and aggressive lower splitter designed to manage the air under and around the car at high speeds to reduce drag and front-end lift, while forcing air through the cooling system. The rear spoiler complements the front aero treat-

ment and minimizes overall drag. The interior also is pure Boss, keyed by a dark metallic instrument panel finish, gauge cluster and door panel trim, optional Recaro bucket seats, a black pool-cue shifter ball and “Powered by Ford” door sill plates. Pricing on the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 starts at $41,105.

In the aftermath of a tropical storm or hurricane Returning from an evacuation Your safety should always be the number one priority. Before you return to your home to check on your belongings and pets, you should wait until emergency management gives you permission to do so. • To re enter the city you may be required to show your RESIDENT ID card, driver’s license, other photo ID or a utility bill that has your name and address. • If your home has structural damage, don’t enter until it has been checked by officials. • Open windows and doors to ventilate and dry your home. • Beware of snakes, insects and animals driven to higher ground by flood water. • Before drinking water, check to make

sure it is safe for you and your family. • Power outages can endanger your food supply. Dispose of any food that has been at room temperature for two hours or more, and any food that has an unusual odor, color or texture. • Danger from power lines: Do not touch fallen or low-hanging wires. A wire that seems harmless may be crossed with a live wire. Stay away from wires in contact with puddles. Do not pile debris on or near power line equipment, poles, transformers, or down wire.

After any emergency event, any questions regarding your safety should be directed to the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. 305-947-4440.
