It’s that time again... SIB Photo Contest for 2014 calendar

o you have an eye for a good picture? Take your camera out, capture a color image that reflects the beauty of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida’s Riviera and submit it to the annual photo contest. There are many subjects to turn the camera towards including, stunning architecture, beautiful parks, the natural beauty of the Atlantic Ocean and plenty of people having fun in the sun! Winning images will be published on a non-exclusive basis in the City’s 2014 desk calendar. Last year’s December calendar photo winner, Valeriy Bezhin, also had his gorgeous nighttime photo appear on the cover of the summer issue of the SIB Living Magazine. In past years, contest photos have been used in outside publications, like the Miami Herald, and were also used on promotional items such as playing cards and coffee mugs. So, even if your photo does not get chosen for the calendar, it could still be used elsewhere to promote this world class city. THE RULES Submissions are due by Monday, October 14, 2013 @ midnight USA Eastern Time.

The photo has to be of a scene taken in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. (between 156 Street and 195 Street and the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.) A panel of judges will evaluate all photos entered on their photographic quality and subject material.

unny Isles Beach Summer Camp 2013 started off with a bang! The Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior groups have traveled throughout MiamiDade, Broward, and even Palm Beach County on exciting, memorable field trips. Some of the trips include local visits to Miami Shores Aquatics, Venetian Pool, and even the Davie Pro Rodeo. The older groups have also experienced Xtreme Kart Racing, Paintball, and Rapids Water Park. The

campers have participated in costume designs and parades as well as creating personal art using food for different holidays. Each Monday, the Juniors and Seniors have the ability to experience our very own Sunny Isles Beach where they play in the surf and sand as well as put their skills to the test with teambuilding activities designed by the counselors. Although this may sound like a lot, half of the summer still remains with amazing new field trips, challenges, and events awaiting

Send Your Nominations Now for the Veterans Wall at Heritage Park Deadline: September 1, 2013 BY ALAYNE YEASH Communications Coordinator

The Veterans Wall at Heritage Park (19200 Collins Avenue) displays the names of Sunny Isles Beach residents that have served our country in the military. Every year new

names of Sunny Isles Beach residents who have served in the United States Armed Forces are added to the wall. The Veterans Day ceremony is held on November 11th at 9:30 am each year at the north end of Heritage Park. This year the date falls on a Sunday and every veteran placed on the wall in the past or those new nominees are invited to attend the celebration. A reception follows the ceremony.

Applications are being accepted until September 1, 2013 for this year’s ceremony. Nominate your friends or relatives for this program. A veteran can nominate his or herself for this honor as well. This is a great way to acknowledge someone in your family for their service to our country. Applications are available online at the City’s website at www.sibfl.net or at the Government Center at 18070 Collins

Avenue or Pelican Community Park, 18115 North Bay Road. Please bring proof of honorable discharge from military service and proof of residency in the City of Sunny Isles Beach. Mount Sinai to host Skin Health Awareness Day free skin screenings provided

Florida has the second highest incidence of melanoma in the United States, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. In addition, melanoma is responsible for approximately 75 percent of all skin cancers. However, because early detection of skin cancer can mean the difference between life and death, Mount Sinai Medical Center is hosting a Skin Health Awareness Day to provide free screenings to the community. The event will take place on Thursday, August 15, from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mount Sinai physicians will administer a complete, non-invasive skin

check – a visual inspection of moles, freckles, marks and uneven pigmentation. Participants will also receive a complimentary UV sun detector wristband. Made of environmentally safe silicon, the bracelet monitors the wearer’s exposure to UVA and UVB rays, which lead to premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. The bracelet, which is water and sweat proof, will change colors alerting the wearer to reapply sunscreen or seek shade. For more information about Mount Sinai Medical Center, visit www.msmc.com. To attend this free event, please RSVP by calling 305-535-3369.

CAMP, from page 1 the campers. For many, it is an eye opening experience that allows some to conquer new challenges, meet new friends, and have experiences that will last a lifetime. Another exciting aspect of the Sunny Isles Summer Camp program is a group of campers we like to call, Camp TotLot. At ages three & four, they are the future of this great city. This fun-filled camp offers children the ability to meet and interact with new friends. Each day they have a new, exciting activity, whether it is Kidokinetics, which teaches coordination and self-confidence; Creative Music and Movement, which explores various musical instruments; and Yoga that is geared towards children and teaches gentle stretching and breathing methods. The remainder of the summer promises to be just as wonderful as the beginning. For the first time ever the camp will be hosting its very own prom on August 5th. The prom will be held during the regular day at camp and will allow for the children to dress up and have a great time together as we close out camp. Leading up to this special event the campers will be designing décor that will be put up around the gym. This promises to be an amazing event. In addition, the Annual Summer Camp Talent Showcase will be presented on Thursday, August 8th at 7:00pm in the school cafeteria, $5 for adults, children are free. This show will feature all of the General Camp groups and the Specialty Camps as the campers demonstrate some new talents they learned over the summer as well some existing talents they have chosen to share with all of you.

Flood Protection from the Building Department

Because the City of Sunny Isles Beach is located in a unique geographical area; it is particularly susceptible to flooding from major rain events and storm surge. The City is surrounded by major water bodies such as the Atlantic Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean’s Intracoastal. Sunny Isles Beach lies close to sea level and its underground water supply is just below the ground surface. Therefore, major rain events sometimes leave rainwater nowhere to drain, causing occasional flooding in some areas of the City. To find out if your home lies in an area susceptible to flooding, known as Special Flood Hazard Areas or flood zones, please call the Building Department at 305-947-2150. Floods are also dangerous. Even though they appear to move slowly (three feet per second), a flood two feet deep can knock a man off his feet and float a car. Your property may be high enough that it has not been flooded during recent storms. However, it can still be flooded in the event of a worse future storm. If you are in the floodplain, the odds are that someday your property will be damaged. This flyer gives you some ideas of what you can do to protect yourself.

CITY FLOOD SERVICES:

The first thing you should do is check your flood hazard. Flood maps and flood protection references are available at the City of Sunny Isles Beach Public Library. You can also visit the Building Department on the third floor of City Hall to see if you are in a mapped floodplain. If so, they can give you more information, such as depth of flooding over a building’s first floor, past flood problems in the area, and copies of elevation certificates on buildings built in the floodplain since 1997. Even if you are not in a floodplain, there still may be some risk of flooding. If requested, both, the Public Works Department and the Building Department will visit a property to review its flood problem and explain ways to stop flooding or prevent flood damage. Call the Department at 305-947-0606. These services are free. If you are in a floodplain or have had a flood, drainage or sewer backup problem, check out these sources of assistance.

The City of Sunny Isles Beach provides Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) determinations to let you know if you are in a flood hazard area and if you are required by federal law to carry flood insurance. For surveyors, architects and engineers, the City has the latest form of elevation certificates available to you for completion. We also have a sample completed elevation certificate for your reference. For lenders, insurance agents, real estate agents, residents and businesses, elevation certificates are kept on file at the City for all buildings permitted by the City. Call the Building Department at (305) 947-2150 for a map determination or copy of an elevation certificate.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Several of the City’s efforts depend on your cooperation and assistance. Here is how you can help:

Do not dump or throw anything into the ditches or streams. Dumping in our ditches and streams is a violation of the Miami-Dade County Code Section 15-6(2). Even grass clippings and branches can accumulate and plug channels. A plugged channel cannot carry water and when it rains the water has to go somewhere. Every piece of trash contributes to flooding. If your property is next to a ditch or stream, please do your part and keep the banks clear of brush and debris. The City has a stream maintenance program which can help remove major blockages such as downed trees. If you see dumping or debris in the ditches or streams, contact the Public Works Department at 305-947-0606. Always check with the Building Department before you build on, alter, re-grade, or fill on your property. A permit is needed to ensure that projects do not cause problems on other properties. If you see building or filling without a City permit sign posted, contact the Building Dept. at 305-947-2150. Check out the following information on flood-proofing, flood insurance and flood safety.

FLOODPROOFING:

There are several different ways to protect a building from flood damage. One way is to keep the water away by re-grading your lot or building a small floodwall or earthen berm. These methods work if your lot is large enough, if flooding is not too deep, and if your property is not in the floodway. The Building Department can provide this information. Another approach is to make your walls waterproof and place watertight closures over the doorways. This method is not recommended for houses with basements or if water will get over two feet deep. These measures are called flood-proofing or retrofitting. More information is available at the Sunny Isles Beach Public Library. Important note: Any alteration to your building or land requires a permit from the Building Department. Even regrading or filling in the floodplain requires a permit.

FLOOD INSURANCE:

If you know a flood is coming, you should shut off the gas and electricity and move valuable contents upstairs. It is unlikely that you will get much warning, so a detailed checklist prepared in advance would help ensure that you don’t forget anything. If you don’t have flood insurance, talk to your insurance agent. Homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. However, because Sunny Isles Beach participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, you can purchase a separate flood insurance policy. This insurance is backed by the Federal government and is available to everyone, even for properties that have been flooded. Some people have purchased flood insurance because it was required by the bank when they got a mortgage or home improvement loan. Usually these policies just cover the building’s structure and not the contents. During the kind of flooding that happens in Sunny Isles Beach, there is usually more damage to the furniture and contents than there is to the structure.

At last count, there were 490 flood insurance policies in Sunny Isles Beach. If you are covered, double-check that the building coverage is adequate and make sure you have contents coverage. Remember: Even if the last flood missed you or you have done some flood-proofing, the next flood could be worse. Flood insurance covers all surface floods.

ELECTRICAL CURRENT CAN TRAVEL THROUGH WATER

Report downed power lines to the Power Company or City emergency management office.

HAVE YOUR ELECTRICITY TURNED OFF BY THE POWER COMPANY

Do not wait for the next flood to buy insurance protection. There is a 30-day waiting period before National Flood Insurance Program coverage takes effect. Contact your insurance agent for more information on rates and coverage.

Some appliances, such as television sets, keep electrical charges even after they have been unplugged. Don’t use appliances or motors that have gotten wet unless they have been taken apart, cleaned, and dried.

FLOOD WARNING NOTICES

Small animals that have been flooded out of their homes may seek shelter in yours. Use a pole or stick to poke and turn things over and scare away small animals.

The National Weather Service monitors local weather conditions. If flooding from rain is anticipated, the Service will broadcast Flood Warning Notices through television, radio and wire services 36 hours in advance. These notices are intended to make you aware and help you prepare for possible flooding. If an Emergency Flood Warning Notice is issued, the National Weather Service will broadcast this warning through the Emergency Broadcast System, and through TV stations such as: WFOR (Ch. 4), WTVJ (Ch. 6), WPLG (Ch. 10) Radio stations such as WIOD (610 AM), (940 AM)

SPANISH BROADCASTS ON: TV stations: WSCV 51, WLTV 23

Radio stations: WCQM (1210 AM) WCQM (92 FM)

In the event of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, the City of Sunny Isles Beach might be required to be evacuated. Evacuation maps, and the City of Sunny Isles Beach evacuation procedures brochure, are available at City Hall (18070 Collins Avenue)

FLOOD SAFETY TIPS DO NOT WALK THROUGH FLOWING WATER

Drowning is the number one cause of flood deaths, mostly during flash floods. Currents can be deceptive; six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet. If you walk in standing water, use a pole or stick to ensure that the ground is still there.

DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH A FLOODED AREA

More people drown in their cars than anywhere else. Don’t drive around road barriers; the road or bridge may be washed out.

STAY AWAY FROM POWER LINES AND ELECTRICAL WIRES

The number two flood killer after drowning is electrocution.

LOOK OUT FOR ANIMALS, ESPECIALLY SNAKES

LOOK BEFORE YOU STEP:

After a flood, the ground and floors are covered with debris including broken bottles and nails. Floors and stairs that have been covered with mud can be very slippery.

BE ALERT FOR GAS LEAKS:

Use a flashlight to inspect for damage. Don’t smoke or use candles, lanterns, or open flames unless you know the gas has been turned off and the area has been ventilated.

EVACUATE:

Sunny Isles Beach is on a barrier island where, even in moderate storms, flooding from a storm surge and strong winds can be life threatening. Once Miami-Dade County gives the order to evacuate Zone A, for tropical storms or hurricanes, all residents in Sunny Isles Beach, both single and multifamily dwellings, ARE REQUIRED, BY FLORIDA LAW, TO EVACUATE. Evacuation routes include bridges and you should expect heavy traffic. To avoid traffic jams once an evacuation order is issued leave the area as soon as possible.

Lorenzo-Bomnin Chevrolet rolls out New Showroom, facility and car line By Jesse Scheckner Drive by Lorenzo-Bomnin Chevrolet, located at 8455 S. Dixie Hwy. and one thing is immediately evident: drastic improvements are being made. Although construction for the dealership is still roughly two months away from completion, the two-time GM Mark of Excellence award-winning business, led by partners Lorenzo Llerena and Arnaldo Bomnin, already looks better than ever. The new facility is 34,000 sq. feet in its entirety, with a 4,300 sq. foot showroom and a massive 15,400 sq. foot air conditioningready garage stocked with high end, state of the art equipment. The new main building houses 28 personnel offices, a general office, and has a repositioned storefront that places the showroom in direct view of US1complete with all of the latest Chevrolet- approved designs. It is the most up to date Chevrolet facility in South Florida and the only one being rebuilt from scratch. “The visibility of the design is great, and we now have a lot more exposure from US1 into the showroom,” says Llerena. It’s great for Chevrolet, for the area and for us as deal-

ers. I think it’s a win-win for everybody.” Originally built as a gas station during the 1940’s, the property was later repurposed as a car dealership. Its small size made it impossible to provide many modest amenities, however. Among the things Llerena and Bomnin are most excited about is the opportunity to reward their customers’ loyalty with a much more accommodating setting that includes a new customer lounge outfitted with a large flat screen television and a dedicated internet room equipped with free wi-fi. Customers bringing in their vehicles for service are provided with free carwashes and there is a point-accumulation reward system for repeat visitors. “We’re very excited that we are able to offer customers much better conditions now,” he says. “They were very loyal to us in the old facility and we’re thrilled to offer them a much improved environment.” All of this remodeling coincides with the largest product revamp in General Motors’ history, with almost 70 percent of their 2014 vehicles being gorgeously redesigned including the Silverado, Colorado, Tahoe, Suburban, Malibu, Impala and the Corvette, of

which they are the number one dealer in the entire southeast region of the United States, year to date. The new rollout also will include the debut of the Chevy SS (Sports Sedan), which boasts a sedan exterior with a Corvette engine.
