BY MICHAEL MILLER About a month ago, David and Carol’s lives essentially ended within a few minutes of each other in their home in Hialeah. The two of them were much in love with one another. Married more than 44 years ago, they had a wonderful life and several children whom they also loved very much.

David and I used to jog together years ago, including the annual Miami Mercedes Benz Corporate Run, and other runs around town. David, a real marathoner (as compared to the hobbyist type like me), yet he would always humor me and slow down a lot just to keep a smile on my face, by letting me think I was as fast as him. I knew the difference and so did he, but we never talked about it, was it as just his way of saying. “I care about our relationship and it is more important then having a

faster time on the score board.” Looking back, I remember one fond moment when I was running a half marathon, feeling pretty lonely and tired, and I looked over on the sidelines and saw David waving and hollering. He must have known what I was going through because before I knew it David was there running alongside me, encouraging me all the way to the finish line. That’s what David was about—helping –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– See

Kidney transplant strikes close to home for mayor BY LEE STEPHENS “Nelson Santiesteban is our hero”, Mayor Horace Feliu simply said. “To go through the pain and obvious risks involved in donating a kidney requires a very special person.” The recipient was the heroic donor’s cousin, and the Mayor’s brother, David Feliu. Over a year ago David Feliu was diagnosed with acute kidney failure and had undergone dialysis for about a year. Typically the two and sometimes three weekly dialysis sessions left him weak and depressed. “The sessions aren’t something you ever get use to,” David Feliu said. “To be hooked up to a machine by way of your arteries only to sit there for hours watching your blood being removed and filtered is something I do not wish upon anybody. I am grateful that my cousin Nelson gave me the gift of life. There are no words that I could say that would accurately convey my feelings and immense gratitude.” Originally Mayor Feliu was first on his brother’s donors list. He went to Jackson Memorial’s transplant department for blood work and a blood pressure test. The medical staff ruled him out due to hypertension or high blood pressure. Blood pressures in donors may go up approximately 20 percent, so it is important that a donor be completely healthy. “I had my pressure taken every day for a week to see if it was a temporary condition,” Mayor Feliu said. “This

whole situation has alerted me to a potential health problem and may have even saved my own life.” David Feliu had a total of eight individuals sign up to be donors, including his cousin, Barbara Nathanial. “The fact that David had that many people want to donate their kidney speaks volumes about my cousin,” she said. Due to blood in his urine samples, Nelson Santiesteban was initially ruled out as a donor as well; however, he insisted that another test be taken. The test came back negative and he was elated with the news. “I couldn’t continue to see my cousin David suffer and allow his life to be cut short,” Santiesteban said. “We as a family have an obligation to one another and I wanted my kids and family to witness this very important example. I want to thank my wife Elizabeth, who was very positive, supportive and never left my side throughout the entire process. I love her very much.” Nelson Santiesteban, a manager of Jackson Memorial’s Biscayne Imaging Center, has been in the healthcare profession for nearly 30 years. “Jackson Memorial Hospital is not only a leader in healthcare but first and foremost in successful transplants,” Santiesteban said. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our nurses, doctors and staff and let everyone know that we as a community need to continue supporting Jackson Memorial Hospital. Now more than ever.”

Lots of special events to report this week Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The Junior Orange Bowl Committee kicked off its 2009-2010 festival with a party poolside at the Gables Waterway. While Catering by Lovables provided a delicious buffet, President Marti Bueso unveiled next year’s theme, “Children Eliminating Boundaries Through Knowledge and Friendship”. Administrative Director Mark Pidal orchestrated the affair attended by several VIPs including JOBC’s Immediate Past President and City Manager of Miami Springs, Jim Borgmann; Past President and Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick; as well as several other Past Presidents including John Admire, Chuck Little, Eunice Perry, Corinne Steinbauer, Linda Brown, Rex Russo and Jeannette Slesnick. On the military front, a promotion ceremony honoring Brigadier General William B. Binger was held at Homestead Air Reserve Base on April 18. Remarks from Lt. General Bradley (Ret) praised Binger’s accomplishments before the pinning of the insignia. Binger’s wife, also a reservist, and his son were joined several South Florida VIPs, friends and family for the affair that concluded with a great party on the terrace. Binger immediately

changed into his flight suit following the ceremony and joined the crowd for a good time. His House is celebrating 20 years of service to South Florida’s abused and abandoned children. Save the date for the His House Children’s Home annual banquet on May 16 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. This outdoor extravaganza will be held on the actual His House campus sponsored by Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Cruises and AT&T. More than 400 guests are expected to enjoy the special occasion. Miami Christian School alumnus, Jose Juan Barea, is making a name for himself in the NBA. For those of you who are fans of Dallas Mavericks, NBA Player and Miami Christian’s own JJ Barea, is in the news with his stellar performance in the first playoff game between the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs, on April 18, 2009. Congratulations to one romantic guy. Jason Miller, an attorney at Adorno & Yoss recently orchestrated a great way to propose to his sweetheart, Stacey Lodner, a MDPS teacher. He selected the Palley Glass Pavilion at the Lowe Art Museum where he set up an artistic display for the engagement ring in a large plexiglas cube. A card described the ring as if it were part of the collection. “One of a Kind, CustomDesigned Diamond Engagement Ring, Platinum, and 18K gold; 11 round, brilliant cut diamonds.” How is that for a thoughtful and creative way to propose? It worked, Stacey said “yes.”

Legislators trying to re-amend classroom size amendment R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The year was 2002. Thousands of registered Florida voters donated tens of thousands of dollars and many thousands of hours to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would limit the number or students that could sit in a public school classroom. They were successful. The amendment passed and the limitations were to take effect by 2010. That was before the recession hit Florida. That was before unemployment in Florida almost hit 10 percent. Yet, that was the will of the people. Expensive as it might be to implement, it was the will of the people. Members of the Florida House and Senate want us to re-amend the Constitution removing what we just approved. The 2002 constitutional amendment wasn’t intended only for good financial times. It was passed to

allow teachers to relate to the needs of their students and assist them in obtaining an education. We didn’t want middle school students sitting in rooms that look like a lecture hall in some university where it is solely up to the student if he or she was to get an education. Now, rather than find the money to implement what the voters demanded, the Florida Legislature is attempting to place an amendment on the ballot revoking the 2002 amendment. It would seem that it is better for legislators to “kowtow” to their financial supporters than to “find” the needed dollars. I can hear their propaganda now. “Voters of Florida, support our new proposed constitutional amendment. We do not want to tax you to death in order to implement an unnecessary limit on classroom size. It is the parents’ responsibility to see that their kids get an education, not our responsibility to spend money that could be better spent on building jails, and building high speed railroads across the state.” Rep. Janet Adkins, a Republican from Fernandina Beach, is quoted as saying

VIEWPOINT that as a mom, she doesn’t think class size is [the] No. 1 indicator of a school’s success, but that parent involvement and discipline in the classroom are more important. Tell her story to the kids from one parent families who are spending every waking hour holding down several parttime jobs so he or she can put food on the table. Tell it to the teacher who is expected to maintain “discipline” in a room filled with dozens of children. I’ll bet Ms. Adkins would pull her two children out of a public school and quickly move them into a private school if that happened. Who knows, her kids might already be in private schools. I hope that the legislature realizes that they need 60 percent of voting Floridians to pass their amendment. They were so happy to “sell” that 60 percent amendment to the public; now it is

going to come back and bite them in the collective rear ends! Tallahassee, start taxing ostrich feed, start taxing skyboxes and start taxing the purchase of yachts. Start finding the money we need to survive! I guess we do have something to be happy about. We could live in the Republic of Texas, excuse me, I mean in the state of Texas, which first helped elect Obama to office and now is refusing to accept billions in federal stimulus money to supplement their educational needs.

Your own worst enemy BY LUCAS IRWIN Personal Trainer & Co-Owner of Brickhouse Fitness Miami, Inc. “I don’t have time.” “I’m just too tired after work.” “I think I may be getting a little sick and I don’t want to make it worse.” These are just a few of the all too common and self-manufactured justifications that many people use on a regular basis for not exercising. To everyone other than the person using them, they are known simply as excuses. Yet, the examples above are all part of the Basic Excuse-Maker Starter Package; many of you have graduated to a much more artistic, complex and advanced level of lying to yourself. Your self-deceit and personal deception has been constructed so beautifully, that you no longer question its actual legitimacy. Unfortunately, it is this self-assembled wall that is keeping you from reaching your personal health and fitness goals. Please keep in mind that just because you do make it to the gym, it doesn’t mean that I am not talking to you. While excuses are holding many people back from exercising at all, there are just as many people who regularly exercise and eat pretty well who are not seeing the results that they want to see for the very same reason. Essentially, excuses are used to legitimize not taking our current efforts to the next level; which typically means more work. So, for some people that means not going to the gym for light cardio 2 times per week; for others it may mean not adding that additional 3-miles to our morning run. Either way, convincing

FRIENDSHIP, from page 1 others become who they wanted to be and providing the encouragement to live a happy, productive and healthy life. David, who years ago was a policeman and most recently headed up a chamber of commerce as well as a business club, just loved to help people. It’s what he was about, and so too was Carol. David frequently spoke of ‘the way things were,’ and he just loved to ‘drop names,’ and he was so good at that partly because he had a long list of ‘names’ from which to drop. This guy knew lots and lots of folks, from all walks of life, and it made him happy to be mentioned in the same breath as many of Miami-Dade County’s movers and shakers. David, a very happy guy, loved his health and spoke of it often and loved sharing his enthusiasm and his healthly lifestyle with others. He was never overbearing, never inflicted his way on others, but let you know that he cared about everyone. I was expecting David to come to our office, as he had done for many years, for

excuses make great barriers for anyone. So what can you do? Well, like most problems, start by admitting to yourself that you are an excuse maker; whether it is occasional or daily. Now that you have done that, it is time to focus on ways to make it over the walls that you have convinced yourself cannot be scaled. For an example, let’s take a gander at what is undoubtedly the most used excuse in the arsenal of lazy, “I just don’t have time.” I have countless clients with schedules you wouldn’t believe. Guess what? They still find time. Jobs and responsibilities are all part of life and despite what you may believe, even the most in-shape individuals have similar responsibilities. When you really want something, you will find the time. Stop using that excuse, please. Because most of you exercise after work, let me give you a few simple adjustments you can make to help ensure that it happens. First, duck into the bathroom and change clothes before you leave work. Second, have a small snack that includes protein and complex carbohydrates about an hour before you get out; it will give you a natural energy spike. Third, don’t stop anywhere else on the way to the gym; especially your house. Finally, find a partner; studies show that you are far more likely to be consistent with one. Be honest with yourself, stop being your own worst enemy and commit yourself to making a change or taking that next step. Remember, I am always here to help you along the way. You can reach me at <lucas@brickhousemiami.com> our annual pilgrimage downtown via the MetroRail to the just held Corporate Run, but alas David did his last one a year ago and he won’t be doing anymore runs, or sharing his enthusiasm for life, and he and Carol won’t be there for their family or their friends anymore. David, who was at home with his wife, who suffered a stroke a month before, apparently just couldn’t stand the thought of Carol continuing to live in her very disabled state, took out a pistol and shot her and then shot himself. Shocked would be an understatement of how I felt when I learned what had occurred. I’ve been pretty speechless about it till now, and I guess the thought of him not showing up for the Corporate Run last week caused me to open up and certainly to look back at my relationship with David. There were lots of things I should have said to him like: “Thanks for your friendship, thanks for your encouragement, thanks for what you do for this community, thanks for sharing and thanks for being who you are.” We will miss David and Carol, and our hearts go out to his children and grandchildren. Carpe Diem

Dadeland Mall playing host to ‘Mom’s Nite Out,’ May 7 BY ASHLEY SUGARMAN

“Nurturing the curiosity of young minds”

Dadeland Mall, one of Miami’s leading shopping destinations, will welcome three of the best talents that Miami has to offer for “National Mom’s Nite Out,” on May 7, the Thursday before Mother’s Day. The first nationally organized celebration of motherhood will pay tribute to moms while providing a great social networking opportunity with cooking demonstrations, a style presentation, complimentary wine and cheese samples by Winn-Dixie and more. CBS 4 News anchor Shannon Hori, renowned Chef Cindy Hutson and event designer and stylist Godfrey del Rio will participate in the evening. All attendees will enjoy special shopping benefits and giveaways, the chance to meet local businesses and a taste of Winn-Dixie with gourmet cheese and wine sampling. Hori will serve as the special guest host for “National Mom’s Nite Out” at Dadeland Mall. As a recent mother to fraternal twin boys, Colt and Cade, Hori will be celebrating her first Mother’s Day along with the event attendees. Hutson will present a live cooking demonstration showcasing a special recipe for all moms to enjoy. The coowner and award-winning chef at Ortanique on the Mile in Coral Gables, Hutson knows her way around the kitchen. Self-taught and internally motivated, Hutson focuses her culinary talents on fusion cooking, drawing inspiration from her travels to and from Jamaica. Del Rio will provide an interactive informal style presentation that will give moms the latest sensible fashion tips.

Pam Woodruff, Director

Cindy Hutson –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Kendall Dr. between the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and S. Dixie Highway (US 1) and is managed by Simon Property Group Inc. Additional information is available at <www.dadeland-mall-fl.com>.

Crazy Pianos to open in Cocowalk on May 6 BY TINA MENDITTO Crazy Pianos, South Florida’s new dueling piano bar, restaurant, and late night entertainment venue, will debut in Coconut Grove on Wednesday, May 6. Located in the space formerly occupied by Cafe Tu Tu Tango in Cocowalk, 3015 Grand Ave., the opening of Crazy Pianos will mark the Netherlands-based company’s first entry into the United States. Crazy Pianos is the No. 1 piano bar in sales worldwide. With an existing location in Scheveningen, Holland, the company has strategic global expansion plans, which include the May opening in Coconut Grove with additional locations planned for London, Dubai, Paris, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York City. The top brass behind the restaurant concept and late night entertainment venue have invested more than $5 million in preparation for the grand opening including a half million dollars for the sound system alone and expansion of the space in Cocowalk from 6,000 to 7,000 square feet. The interior space consists of 100 percent Dutch made woodwork and finishes imported from the Netherlands. “Cocowalk is the perfect center to

launch the first Crazy Pianos in the United States,” said Jay Silbermann, managing director for Crazy Pianos. “We hope to make a significant contribution to Miami by featuring the top entertainers in the business. We have hired more than 150 staff members, each with their own distinct personality and style, to add to the flavor of what makes the Crazy Pianos brand unique.” The company only employs up-andcoming, multi-faceted entertainers from around the world whose focus is on the music. These high-energy individuals are able to sing and play the piano well, while engaging the audience by taking song

requests. In essence, the audience dictates the genre of music that will be played each evening and for how long. “We take the dueling pianos concept to a new level in world-class entertainment,” said Orin Sands, managing director of entertainment for Crazy Pianos. “We focus on bringing our guests the best musical variety and talent from around the globe, from our entertainers to our state-of-the-art sound system. Our entertainers specialize in a variety of musical genres including oldies and classic rock hits from the ’70s, ’80s, ‘90s, and today,” Sands concluded. “You name it, and they’ll play it — all until 3 a.m.”

The Crazy Pianos menu features a variety of moderately priced International and Americana, Pan Asian, and French-American bistro style cuisine prepared by executive chef John Bond. Specialty dishes include traditional style Peruvian Cerviche, Coconut Rum Glazed Mahi Mahi, Spinach Portobello Mushroom Ravioli, Tasmanian Salmon Bur Blanc, and Kobe Beef Sliders just to name a few. All entrees range from $10 to $30. There even is a Crazy Kids menu for the little ones with prices ranging from $5 to $6. Delectable desserts include Deep Fried Cheesecake consisting of melt-in-yourmouth original New York, Lemon, Chocolate Marble and Dulce de Leche deep fried in a flaky pastry tortilla served with chocolate and red raspberry sauce. There will be a full-service bar, where the bartenders are as much a part of the fun as the Crazy Pianos entertainers. Crazy Pianos is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. At 10 p.m., Crazy Pianos morphs into a late nightclub venue for adults 21 and older featuring live performances based on special requests from the audience. For more information on Crazy Pianos, please visit <www.crazypianos.com> or call 305-567-2462.

2009 Nissan Versa is America’s lowest-priced car Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS With a suggested retail price of $9,990, Nissan is billing its new 2009 Versa Sedan as the lowest-priced new car on the market in the United States. Nissan debuted the front-wheel drive Versa in the U.S. as a 2006 model and it has been a solid seller with consumers looking for fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance or roominess. It also has one of the highest standard horsepower/torque ratings and the largest interior in the entry-level segment, along with good quality, reliability and durability. Versa is built at Nissan’s Aguascalientes, Mexico, assembly plant (where the Sentra is made) and is available in three models in five-door Hatchback or four-door Sedan configurations: 1.8 S with four-speed automatic and 1.8 SL with Xtronic CVT.

All 2009 Versas feature a standard 122 hp, 16-valve, 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine and a choice of three transmissions — Nissan Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), four-speed electronically controlled automatic with overdrive or the standard six-speed manual gearbox. The automatic tranny combination delivers a pleasantly responsive performance, as well as 26 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the highway. You’ll get 27/33 mpg with the CVT transmission; 24/32 mpg with the four-speed automatic transmission; and 26/31 mpg with the sixspeed manual transmission. The Xtronic CVT, unlike conventional stepped gear automatics, operates as essentially “one gear” through use of a belt and two pulleys. By varying the working diameters of the two pulleys, the transmission eliminates the “steps” between gears, resulting in a smoother, more efficient operation by keeping the engine in its optimum power range under a variety of driving and load conditions. Both the Hatchback and Sedan ride on a 102.4-inch wheelbase and have short front and rear overhangs, dynamic styling with crisp body forms and long rooflines, large

halogen headlights, a signature Nissan grille and large taillights. Body-color front and rear bumpers and dual remote-controlled outside mirrors accent the exterior. A Sport Package (optional on the Versa Hatchback SL model) adds performance styling with a roof-mounted rear spoiler, lower body side sill extensions, unique front and rear fascia, and fog lights. On the inside, there’s a spacious cabin and a clean, simple, high-quality interior design that allows for comfort for all passengers. A wide, laterally oriented instrument panel emphasizes the car’s width, while the low center console flows freely toward the

rear. Both Sedan and Hatchback integrate convenient storage areas, including the center console, glove box, front doors and an in-dash CD storage compartment. Versa also comes with a laundry list of standard and available equipment, including Nissan Intelligent Key, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, XM Satellite Radio and Clarion speakers with a Rockford Fosgate-powered subwoofer.
