Obesity BY MANUEL ABELLA MD, FACC, FCCP

Abella Heart Florida Heart & Vascular Care of West Kendall Obesity, we find the very word insulting. Obesity is defined as a BMI or body mass index of greater than or equal to 30 (http:// www.nhlbisupport. com/bmi/bminojs. htm) There are an average of 33.8% of American adults and 17% of American children who are obese. This translates to 72 million Americans, who by being obese are at increased risk of diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis by virtue of the one common denominator. The causes are mainly our highly purified diet and sedentary lifestyle. Add to the mix our obsession with super sized portions and it makes for the pandemic of gargantuan proportions. Genetic factors play a major role in developing obesity. There are at least 23 genetic markers clearly associated with obesity. But like alcoholism, in the absence of a stimulus, the genetically predisposed would not develop the disease. Studies have show that in predisposed patients, stimulation or triggering of genetic variables by the age of 23 will lead to a lifelong battle with overweight and obesity. Genetics –––––See

Surveys Show Doral’s Strength T wo recent surveys highlight Doral’s strength as a place to live and a place to grow a business. The City of Doral commissioned a survey of its residents by Florida International University’s Metropolitan Center. The survey focused on several topics including consumer expenditures, household demographics, and overall satisfaction with Doral’s quality of life. Three key results showcase residents’ satisfaction with living in Doral: • 95.9% rated the quality of life within Doral as good/excellent. • 96.4% would recommend Doral as a place to live and work. • 87.4% see themselves continuing to live in Doral in three years. These results clearly show that those most familiar with Doral rate it highly and recommend it wholeheartedly. The next survey was conducted as part of the One Community One Goal effort spearheaded by The Beacon Council. First, a little history – One Community One Goal (OCOG) was originally initiated in 1996 by the late Jay Malina to identify the industries in Miami-Dade County that would create the most jobs over the next 10 years. The project as led by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce with The Beacon Council and other Chambers playing key supporting roles. Those current target industries are Aviation, Film & Entertainment, Fashion & Lifestyle, Financial Services, Information Technology/Telecommunications, International Commerce, Life Sciences, and Visitor Industry. In 2009, in response to the recession,

Doral has emerged as a center for international business with companies large and small driving growth. The Beacon Council revisited OCOG to update and expand its original work and determine if these are still Miami-Dade County’s target industries. Frank Nero, Beacon Council President & CEO, presented an update on these efforts at the Doral Business Council’s December Signature Breakfast. Featured in the presentation was a

Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebrates Christmas and New Site BY GLORIA BURNS

Our Lady of Guadalupe Pastor, Father Israel Mago is looking forward to the completion of a new church in 2012 being built at NW 25th St. and 117 Ave. A celebratory mass held there on Dec. 12 with retired Archbishop Agustin Roman as celebrant confirms that commitment. A rain storm failed to deter the many hundreds who gathered for the special occasion featuring a performance by mariachis and testimonials on miracles associated with the Blessed Mother, the Virgin of Guadalupe. More than 500 parishioners of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Doral gathered at Doral Charter High School for Christmas midnight mass on Dec. 24. This was the first time since the church was created that parishioners could attend the ceremony at their own mass venue. The following week, the three kings made an appearance to participate in the mass celebrating the Epiphany as a surprise for the congregation. At Our Lady of Guadalupe, there is always something new to bring the congregation closer to God and to one another. For more information on the only Catholic Church in Doral, visit www.olgfl.org <http://www.olgfl.org/> .

From the DBC Executive Director’s Desk BY DANA FERNETY

Doral Business Council Executive Director I am pleased to announce that the Doral Business Council has brought in Saylin Paez as our new Sales Representative. Saylin handles membership and sponsorship sales; so please share your leads with her. Many of you already know Saylin from her years as Superintendent of Recreation with the City of Doral’s Parks & Recreation Department. She has also been a sales representative for Shula’s Athletic Club in Miami Lakes and for Prestige Builders Group. Saylin began her career as a teacher for MiamiDade Public Schools. Saylin is representative of the direction we are taking the DBC. The DBC is a good organization with a solid foundation. I intend to make it a great organization. Great organizations find ways to reach beyond their current standing by redefining their goals, improving the customer/member experience, updating their business model, and making the changes necessary to grow. We are building on existing strategic partnerships and developing new ones with various organizations throughout Miami-Dade County. The DBC already has a Memorandum of Understanding with The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s official economic development partnership. I have met with Barbara Pimentel of the Florida Custom Brokers & Forwarders Association, Mark Trowbridge of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and Barry Johnson of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. We are seeking opportunities to crosspromote events – sharing member rates and allowing respective members to attend events at member rates. While these county-wide alliances are important, we must remain focused –––––––––––— See

The The Arts ArtsWill willDescend descendon on Doral in 2012! the City of Doral this year Dorall B D Business Council (DBC) will kick off its Arts, Culture, and Entertainment Committee (ACE), while The InterContinental Hotel Doral Miami will initiate a series of art exhibitions beginning in January 2012. The idea is to help bring artists and related activities to Doral. Currently, several DBC members have businesses or organizations related to arts, culture, and entertainment. Understanding the need to support the arts chair Frank Siberio and co-chair Cesar Murillo agreed to head up the ACE committee. The DBC kicked off the January Signature Breakfast with M. John Richard President and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center as the keynote speaker. “To this end, the ACE committee will encourage the development of cultural opportunities and resources, as well as the creative, social and community benefits they provide”, said Mr. Murillo. On January 13, The InterContinental at Doral Miami will hold an inaugural cocktail and will kick off the monthly exhibit series with Doral artist, Aguasanta Erminy’s paintings. Aguasanta was born in Caracas, Venezuela. All through her life she has had a strong passion for the arts. Aguasanta studied communications and art at the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello in Caracas and graduated with honors from the University of Miami with an Arts degree in film. Aguasanta has exhibited her work worldwide with such organizations as the Florida Museum of Hispanic and Latin American Art, Batik International, Arteamericas, Art Basel and others. InterContinental at Doral Miami shares with its guests that the most enriching and rewarding travel comes through authentic experiences. Working in partnership with

The InterContinental at Doral Miami

Fundacion Artistas Unidos, the hotel will be featuring a different artist each month, sharing all that is special about Doral and South Florida. Each month, on the second Friday, the hotel will offer a kick off cocktail and will have the artist on hand. During the month, the artists will exhibit their work, so that residents, hotel guests, and the community at large can stop in to enjoy the various works of art at no cost. A DBC member, the hotel is working closely with the newly created ACE committee through Mr. Murillo as well as with Fundacion Artistas Unidos, in order to implement this project. “The idea for doing monthly exhibits is

to encourage cultural growth in the city and to ensure that art, culture and entertainment are central elements of the quality of life for our guests, the residents, and businesses of Doral”, said Jose Marti, General Manager of the InterContinental at Doral Miami. At the end of the year Fundacion Artistas Unidos, together with the hotel and the DBC ACE committee, hope to create a coffee table book and hold an end of year exhibit featuring all of the visiting artists.

Protect your data with B2B Cloud Solutions By Susan Smith Most business startups do not last more than a year or two let alone if you are in the technology business. B2b Cloud Solutions is a company that started in 1991 doing just that. They were there before Windows, email and the internet. They have survived multiple recessions, Year 2000 and the dot com bubble. Partners German Lopez and Frank Fernandez have piloted the 20 year old company in changing their business model three times over the company’s life with the most recent change 4 years ago to focus on cloud computing. “There are inherent costs and risks of owning your own IT equipment.” says Lopez. “Cloud computing reduces those Business Owners (l to r) Frank costs and mitigates those risks. As an exFernandez and German Lopez ample, when you purchase a new file server for your business, you must spend thousands of dollars for hardware, software and professional services to migrate to the new server. You spend extra money to ensure you can grow with the server in case you expand. Then you must pay even more thousands of dollars over the life of that server to maintain and support it only to find that after three or four years it is obsolete and you have to spend money all over again.” Imagine that instead of that model, you pay a monthly fee to host your server in a secure data center and with that monthly fee you never have to worry about paying to upgrade your server or IT equipment ever again. In that same monthly fee, you pay only for what you need. You need a server for 10 employees, pay only for 10 employees. Need more disk space, make a phone call and you have more disk space in 5 minutes. Also imagine you never have to pay for maintenance and support ever again. Many companies back up their data each night. What if your data was backed up every 15 minutes? What a secure feeling you have that if you inadvertently delete or modify a document that you can recover that document or your entire server as of 20 minutes ago. Cloud computing removes the risk and high cost of computing and the companies that will most benefit from this are the small businesses that have between 5 to 100 users. “We are pioneers in our industry. We have been doing this for years and now the technology of Cloud computing has received enough exposure eventually the market has caught up to us. We offer our clients proof of concept. We will go into the virtual environment, take a copy of your servers and put it in our cloud to see if you are comfortable. It is a try before you buy guarantee,” said Lopez. For the best in cloud computing support technology that allows clients to work and collaborate from any desktop or laptop with full access anytime and anywhere, explore the possibilities at b2b Cloud Solutions. Comet Delivery Services handles everything from envelopes to elephants By Susan Smith From bringing in fresh pots of coffee, to relocating a jet engine, to premier red carpet film screening set ups and even delivery of a priceless human heart, Comet Delivery Services has been moving precious merchandise for their clients since 1977. “We have done it all,” said Comet Delivery President Steven Seltzer. “A cruise ship client once had us meet one of their vessels in Key West Comett Deliveryy Founderr andd President because they ran out of coffee Stevee Seltzer and we were there with plenty of back-up. At a recent DreamWorks animation motion picture film screening we were hired to bring in the red carpet treatment---literally---and we handled set up before sunrise and break down at the end of the event. We just did a big job on magazine distributions for Art Basel.” Seltzer started his business right out of college at a time when courier service was in great demand due to original document requirements from lawyers and accountants filed in the court system. As technology advanced and faxes and scanned emails became the

order of the day, Seltzer and his innovative team rolled up their sleeves and expanded their business. “Back in the day we were actually moving the original teletype machines for one of my accounts, ITT Global Communications. We saw the machines get smaller and smaller as did the fax machines. We started expanding our warehouse and distribution division into what has become a sophisticated trucking division handling statewide, country wide and international delivery and service,” said Seltzer. Local and national deliveries, warehousing and distribution as well as same day, next day or pre-scheduled deliveries are all part of the spectrum of services offered at Comet Delivery, a recognized leader and innovator of custom designed delivery schedules. Comet’s one-stop shop does it all from warehous ing to distribution. A Comet client now no longer needs to pay for their own storage facility or fleet of vehicles to deliver merchandise to their customers. The client inventory is stored at one of Comet’s warehouses and when the order needs to be delivered a customized delivery schedule is set up by their team of professionals. Seltzer explains the system as a win-win for everyone. “With your inventory in our warehouse you can fax, email or call us to speed your goods to your customers. Those savings can result in a huge increase in

Thee Comett team m inn motion.

your bottom line earnings while freeing up your capital. We do it all so you don’t have to.” “We have a team of about a dozen folks in the office and about 80 drivers on the road in cars, trucks or tractor trailers. We bend over backwards if necessary to get the job done. Between our supportive staff and friends in the industry there is nothing we cannot do for our clients. Our repeat business and high percentage of word of mouth referrals is testament to that. Whether it’s a trailer of goods or an envelope to be delivered anywhere, we can get it done,” said Seltzer. Community Association Beat BY MITCH DRIMMER

I am honored to have been asked to serve as a columnist for Community Newspapers to share important and topical information about South Florida community associations. My column will specifically address business issues related to condominium and homeowner associations (HOA). Running an association is a complicated and difficult task, often thrust upon well-meaning residents who have volunteered their time to take on the enormous responsibilities of board membership. I also believe that nonboard member owners should understand the issues involved because they may decide to run for the board of directors one day. Perhaps the most critical issue facing condos and HOA’s today is the delinquency rate among members paying their association maintenance fees, also known as assessments. Some people pay late, and some owners do not pay at all. Since condos and HOA’s are known as a zero dollar business (what they are budgeted to collect is the same as what they are budgeted to spend) it has caused either a reduction of services or even an increase in assessments. This unfairly affects the owners who have been responsibly paying fees and is a problem that should not be taken lightly. So what is a community association to do when an owner is paying late or does not pay at all? Usually, the first reaction is for the association’s board of directors or management company to send the file to an attorney. Now while that may seem to be the best idea, and at some point in the life

of a delinquent unit it may be necessary, it does not have to start that way. The first thing that a board of directors needs to do is to plan a meeting with only one item on the agenda: collections. In this meeting, all options should be put on the table and discussed. The goal of this meeting is to agree to follow the association’s “uniform collection policy,” or to establish such a policy if one does not exist. The single most important paper in the room for this meeting is the governing documents of the association. Highlighted sections discuss how the bylaws address this issue. Every set of governing documents for all communities contemplate this issue and have parameters by which boards can deal with it. Such topics as when a payment is late, when it is past due, late interest, past due fees, and whether the association can file a lien for unpaid maintenance fees are usually included in the governing documents. The second most important documents are Florida State Statutes 718 (for condos) and 720 (for homeowner associations). A good understanding of these statutes along with a proper reading of the associations own governing documents will give a board direction in formulating a just and proper uniform collection policy. In my next column I will get down to the specific issues and present some possible policies that a condo or HOA may adopt to improve association cash flow. Mitch Drimmer is a licensed community association manager and the Vice President of Association Financial Services, a Miami finance, business process outsourcing, and accredited collection agency specializing in community associations.

Severe stroke cannot keep dancer Tammy Farris down BY RAQUEL GARCIA

Tammy Farris, who had been dancing most of her life, suffered a severe stroke in October 2011 that left the professional dance instructor wheel chair-bound, unemployed, and minus insurance. The South Florida Dance Showcase on Jan. 20 at Broward College is dedicated to help get her and other stroke victims back on their feet. “My mother was told to get my things in order because they did not think I was going to make it,” Farris said. “I was found hours after passing out and immediately rushed to the hospital for surgery. They drained the blood out of my brain and performed a tracheotomy to clear my lungs. I don’t remember my first month in intensive care.” Farris experienced the classic stroke symptoms of numbness on her left side and dizziness prior to passing out and attributes the stroke itself to high blood pressure and stress. In just a few months since the October stroke, she has regained partial use of her left arm and is attempting to learn to walk. Like millions of Americans, Farris did not have insurance at the time of the stroke. She was teaching at Dance Gallery in the South Miami area after giving up her own studio to enable her to teach fulltime. Dance Gallery has sponsored several fundraisers on Farris’ behalf and they sell “Hope You Can Dance” bracelets for her, but more help is needed. “I applied for Medicaid and finally did receive it but they do not cover occupational therapy so I started doing it on my own to continue to improve. I made so many calls to so many organizations but as soon as they found out I was a stroke victim they would say ‘oh, we don’t take stroke victims.’” A branch of Medicaid called Medica offers limited occupational therapy which

“When something tragic and unexpected happens in life you have to fight. I believe you can achieve anything you desire if you work hard enough and believe in yourself.” — Tammy Farris

apparently Farris already has used up and so she continues to make calls to find a way to get help while doing what she can on her own — a risky gamble. “I am living with my mom now and we have modified the house so I can take a shower in the wheelchair but there are so many things you cannot do with only one arm. I can’t cook; I can’t fold laundry. I have fallen four times already and, thank

God, I have not split my head open because one time I landed on my face on the ceramic tile. This is why so many stroke victims end up back in the hospital,” Farris said. A life of immobility to a lifelong dancer brought up in the studio of her mother, Virginia Harris, is not a proposition Farris is willing to accept. “When something tragic and unexpected

happens in life you have to fight. I believe you can achieve anything you desire if you work hard enough and believe in yourself,” Farris said. Apparently this is the style of leadership she taught her nearly 500 students during the course of her career thus far. “Her students love her and want to do more for her,” said Rosemary Baker, Dance Gallery director. “She has been in the dance community a long time and is very well known. She really relates to the students. “Tammy is able to get on their level and explain things in a unique and effective way. If she is teaching ballet, for example, she makes it fun. Ballet is not fun for a lot of students but Tammy could make it fun for everybody.” Many of Farris’ alumni have gone on to dance for the Miami Heat, the Miami Dolphins, and performed on national and international stages such as on the television program So You Think You Can Dance. Some have left travel engagements to come back to town and teach master classes to benefit Farris. Recently a group of students at Dance Gallery decided to post messages about the difference she has made in their lives. “You are my motivation,” Alexis Browning said. “You not only inspired me to dance but also to stay strong and always keep your head up,” Stephanie Pujol said. “You are one of the best teachers I have ever had, not only an inspiration but also a role model,” Casey Ruiz said. The First Annual South Florida Dance Showcase to Benefit Stroke Victims is Friday, Jan. 20, 7 p.m., in the Omni Auditorium at Broward College North Campus, 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd. Call Tammy at 305-323-9041 or send email to <distinctiondance@aol.com> for more information.

Dramatic rise in NFL injuries should serve as a warning

Jarett Reinhartz ADVANCED FOOTCARE It is no coincidence that the National Football League is experiencing one its highest incidences of significant player injuries in the same year as its abbreviated training camp/preseason. This circumstance should alert athletes at all levels about the importance of preventive care and professional medical attention for developing physical problems. The lockout that kept players out of camp also kept them from receiving the medical attention and physical preparation that generally precedes the stresses of the regular season. As a result, the number of injuries has soared with the most frequent types of damage involving feet, knees and legs. According to media reports, 11 players suffered Achilles tendon injuries in the preseason alone. In the preseason and regular season, a large number of athletes have been sidelined with aggravated hamstrings, torn ACLs, plantar fasciitis, and turf toe, among other disorders of the lower extremities. Some NFL players entered the preseason with injuries that they had already sustained through exercise or in the course of everyday life. Others were hurt during

practice sessions or in training because they overcompensated to make up for lost time resulting from the lockout. Regardless of the reason, these players’ conditions worsened when exposed to the rigors of practice and competition. For some, it meant being sidelined for the rest of the competitive season. Others may be facing the end of their professional sports careers. Athletes at all levels should receive regular medical checkups and should maintain proper physical conditioning before and during their sports seasons. Although it is considered in some corners to be macho to “play through pain,” persistent discomfort should prompt attention by an appropriate medical professional before it escalates. It is virtually impossible to rule out injuries in athletics – particularly in a highcontact sport like football. However, one can minimize the chances of serious conditions and minimize their severity with an ounce of caution. Jarett Reinhartz, C.Ped., is managing partner of Advanced Footcare, Inc. of Miami. He is a licensed pedorthist, and a member of the Pedorthic Footwear Association and is certified by the Board of Certification in Pedorthics. Jarett’s patients have included hundreds of professional and amateur athletes, including players in the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and college teams.
