Take unique boat tour of Gables Waterways BY LEE STEPHENS

Everyone can be ‘a little Irish’ at St. Patrick’s Day Festival

H

ave you ever wondered how those scenic waterways in Coral Gables got there? Are they natural streams or manmade canals, freshwater or tidal? Where are the manatees’ favorite haunts? How old is the limestone ridge along the banks? What are the architectural styles of the bridges? All these questions and more will be answered on boat tours during Dade Heritage Days, the celebration of Miami’s historic places that the nonprofit Dade Heritage Trust presents to the community during March and April. For the first time ever, the public is offered a chance to enjoy a boat ride up the Coral Gables Waterways with experts in history, architecture, geology and marine life. Thanks to Dade Heritage Trust, Waterway Renaissance Project, Shake-A-Leg and Ocean Research & Education Foundation, a distinguished team of guides has been assembled to share knowledge and colorful stories. Included are historian Arva Moore Parks, architect Bruce Brockhouse, marine scientist Bob Ginsburg, and environmentalist Dick Pettigrew. Spearheading the tour is resident Peter Hairston, founder of the Waterway Renaissance Project, a campaign to enhance the bridges, banks and enjoyment of the Coral Gables Waterways. The boat tours will be given on Sunday, Mar. 7, at 10 a.m., and on Saturday, Apr. 10, 10 a.m. and at 1 p.m., leaving from 200 Edgewater Dr. Cost is $35 for members of Dade Heritage Trust and the sponsoring organizations, and $45 for nonmembers. Space is limited; advance paid reservations are essential; call DHT at 305-358-9572. Becky Roper Matkov is president/CEO of Dade Heritage Trust, Miami’s largest nonprofit historic preservation organization, which has worked since 1972 to save Miami’s historic places. For a complete listing of the 70 tours and special events of Dade Heritage Days throughout the community, go to <www.dadeheritagetrust.org> or call Dade Heritage Trust, 305-358-9572, for a brochure.

he South Florida Irish community invites everyone to join in a traditional Celtic celebration during the 32nd annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 13 (Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day). The festival will take place at Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park, 2800 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables (just five blocks south of Miracle Mile). Entertainment will be provided by Avalon featuring the popular Irish singer and harpist Tricianne Garrihy; Green Blue Band featuring Paddy Kelleghan; Tipsy Laird, the Irish Balladeer, and St. Andrew Bagpipe Band. In addition, Irish dancers from

the Breffni Academy of Dance led by Michael O’Hara will provide plenty of fancy stepping and gravity-defying leaps. Lovely participants of the Miss Colleen Pageant will be showcased on stage. Holding to the belief that “Everyone is a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day,” the St. Patrick’s Day Committee has combined family-oriented entertainment and a variety of palate-pleasing delectables such as traditional corned beef and cabbage, and authentic Irish soda bread, as well as a wide array of spirits and other beverages including Irish whisky and Irish stout. The festival also will feature many children’s activities, including the –––––––––

The Coral Gables City Commission gave its consent on Feb. 10 to rename Washington Park as “William Alexander Cooper Park,” a fitting tribute to a man who worked tirelessly to protect and preserve his community. The park is located on 4920 Washington Dr. in the Golden Gate Subdivision, just a few blocks away from where Cooper spent his life as a strong advocate for community safety and improvements. He was the founder and president of the Lola B. Walker Homeowners Association

of Coral Gables and was instrumental in placing the MacFarlane Homestead Subdivision Historic District on both the Coral Gables Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. Cooper also served as a member of several city boards including the Coral Gables Citizens’ Crime Watch and the Code Enforcement Board. Born in 1929 to Bahamian immigrants, he continued to live in the same Washington Drive neighborhood with his wife, Leona, until his death in 2008. A date for the rededication ceremony of William Alexander Cooper Park will be announced.

Casino Night to benefit children’s dental clinic Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Casino Night at Coral Gables Woman’s Club promises to raise needed funds to support free dental services for children. While the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club has had to cut down on the hours of service at its May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic because of finances, members are counting on community support for the club’s Mar. 7 fundraiser. The event is to alleviate the strain on the club’s budget and allow it to make services available to more children than ever. Club president Pam Schaefer and event chair Charo Bolanos encourage the crowd to come in comfortable western attire as the event continues with its “Gold Rush theme. Guests will enjoy good food, music, games, silent and live auction, and cash bar. Proceeds will benefit the May Van Sickle Dental Clinic which provides more than $160,000 in free dental care annually to disadvantaged children. Sensitive to the economic situation of many, tickets this year have been reduced to a very affordable $25 per person. For more information on sponsorships, donations of items or tickets, call 305-9683090. The Haitian Relief effort continues to be the focus of many nonprofits as well. Doral Rotarians are welcoming anyone who would like to help sort and pack boxes to join them any Saturday or Sunday, 9 a.m.5 p.m., at their warehouse, 8571 NW 54 St. in Doral. The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club is among the many volun-

teer groups that have joined in this effort. On a more direct response, 80 highly trained members of the South Florida Urban Search and Rescue Team Task Force 2, have returned from Haiti having earned praise for their heroic efforts in Port-AuPrince. Coral Gables firefighter David Vargas and Gables medical director Mark Grossman were among the group who worked feverishly to save people from collapsed buildings and attend to their medical needs, at times putting their own lives at risk. Gables Mayor Don Slesnick also participated in a mission to Haiti — a mission, from all reports, that leaves a lasting mark on one’s very soul. In club news, Gables Rotarians have enjoyed several prominent speakers this past month. University of Miami’s renowned Shelton “Shelly Berg, dean of the School of Music, delivered a talk to the club recently with an update on the many exciting things happening at UM. Among the highlights his talk centered on the Henry Mancini Institute (HMI) that moved here after 10 years from Los Angeles. Berg was very familiar with HMI and the Mancini Family during his tenure as head of Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California; so, when HMI announced its plans to close, several leading music organizations from across the United States vied for the opportunity to host it and the Mancini family chose Dean Berg and the Frost School of Music — an impressive coup for UM, Dean Berg and South Florida. Next on the Rotary lineup was Arva Moore Parks McCabe, renowned historian and author who is currently working on a book about George Merrick. This endeavor has taken her to many locations for research and promises to be a very revealing book with facts that will surprise many. Until next time, keep making each day count.

Arva Moore Parks McCabe is pictured with Rotary president Wiley Hicks.

Community leaders visit Haiti to build orphanage

Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick carries boxes full of collected T-shirts on their way to Haiti.

BY MARIA ROSA HIGGINS FALLON

Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick recently traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti for four days as part of a volunteer response group that went to help construct an orphanage and shelter in the devastated country. Mayor Slesnick traveled at his own expense, with the Relief Foundation, along with 100 other community leaders — surgeons, nurses, construction teams, journalists and religious leaders. The group of volunteers helped rebuild a demolished orphanage by setting up a large tent that will double as a shelter. The foundation also plans to establish a business that will generate revenue for the orphanage to sustain it in the future.

Mayor Slesnick and his wife, Jeannett, were asked by the orphanage to bring Tshirts. After conducting a T-shirt drive at West Lab and Coral Gables elementary schools, they collected more than 7,000 shirts from various community organizations. The Slesnicks, with the help of friends, packed the shirts in boxes so they could easily be transported to the airport and the orphanage. The Relief Foundation raised $100,000 in medical supplies, mattresses, water, tents and other aid to help support more than 100 orphans who currently have no place to call home. Currently, these children are being treated and kept in a makeshift hospital by the airport and have no family or individuals to whom they can be released.

Cooking well in no sweat at Culinary Boot Camp BY LAUREN MILLER

Say the words “boot camp” and the first image that pops into your head is someone yelling at you as you run down the field with sweat dripping off your forehead. Luckily, at the Culinary Boot Camp conducted at the Biltmore Culinary Academy, the only time you may break a sweat is on the last day of boot camp when the four head chefs from the hotel taste your final prepared meal. Have no fear, because before you reach this point, Lourdes Castro, the academy director of the boot camp, will teach you everything you need to know about cooking, from how to properly use a knife to preparing a perfect chocolate soufflé. Castro is a Miami native and splits her time between the Biltmore boot camp here in Miami and teaching at NYU’s Food Studies Department in New York. She also is the author of the cookbooks, Simply Mexican and Eat, Drink, Think in Spanish. The Culinary Boot Camp takes place daily, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. With no more then eight students in the class and Lourdes and two Le Cordon Bleu graduates assisting you, no question goes unanswered. Your day begins at 9:30 with breakfast prepared by the chefs at the Biltmore. (Think freshly made croissants.) The bulk of the boot camp takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and during this time, you and a partner will prepare a recipe that Lourdes provides. If you are lucky, you might be able to prepare a recipe from her Simply Mexican cookbook. Don’t think for a minute that the food will go to waste. At boot camp, what you make is what you eat for lunch. Not only do you eat what you have prepared, but you also get to sample what the other students in the class have whipped up. From 2 to 3 p.m. is break time, which can be spent lounging around the pool and eating sorbet provided by the Cascade Bar & Grill at the Hotel, or in the cabana drinking lattes. This boot camp can be tough.

Finally, the last session of the day features cooking demonstrations from 3 to 5. During this time, you may learn how to make fresh pasta. Once you see how easy it is and how fresh homemade pasta tastes, you’ll never go back to store-bought pasta. Do you like seafood? Lourdes will show you how to make Fish Ceviche, Tuna Carpaccio and Shrimp & Lime Salad. Never made chocolate soufflé? Are you afraid of over-whipping egg whites? Lourdes will teach you how to cook like a professional pastry chef. Always wanted to learn how to make a decadent sauce to go along with your freshly prepared chicken? Once again, you’ll learn all the tricks and discover that it is easier than you’d expect. Many people are intimidated by the thought of entering a kitchen. Enlist in the Culinary Boot Camp at the Biltmore Hotel and you’ll have nothing to fear. The next boot camp session will be held Mar. 15-19. The local package price is $1,500, which includes two meals daily and excludes overnight accommodations. The price for the full package is $3,750 and includes accommodations for five nights, three daily meals with beverages, tax, and gratuities. For weekend warriors, the next weekend boot camp will be Apr. 16-18. The weekend boot camp local package is $900 and the weekend boot camp full package is $2,175. The Biltmore Culinary Academy also offers three-hour classes, which include everything from making decadent chocolate desserts to preparing dishes with the cultural flavors of South Florida. The price is $110 per adult. Don’t worry, the academy did not forget about the budding chef in your family. Spring break and summer camps, as well as children’s classes also are available. The Biltmore Culinary Academy is located at the Biltmore Hotel at 1200 Anastasia Ave. in Coral Gables. For more information on the boot camp and classes, call 305-9133131 or visit the website at <www.biltmorehotel.com/bca/index.php>.

JohnMartin’s to host annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

If you miss out on the St. Patrick’s Day fun you might be “green” with envy. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY ERIKA ARRIOLA

It’s that time of the year to bring out your best green outfit because the St. Patrick’s Day celebration returns on Wednesday, Mar. 17. JohnMartin’s Restaurant & Irish Pub in Coral Gables will host South Florida’s favorite Irish tradition, the 20th annual St. Patrick’s Day Street Fair with live music from UV — The U2 Tribute Show. The street fair begins at 5 p.m. along Salzedo Street and Aragon Avenue and is free to the public. “Commemorating St. Patrick’s Day is something that goes beyond our typical celebrations; it’s the Irish way of life to care, to sing, to celebrate together with our friends, family and community,” said Martin Lynch, proprietor of JohnMartin’s. “This annual party provides an opportunity for people of all ages to gather and celebrate this great tradition. Most importantly, it will benefit the Coral Gables Rotary Club.” The evening will begin with live Irish music by Paddy Kelleghan and The Rolling C’s, followed by rock tunes with the Hard Liquor Band. UV—The U2 Tribute Show, will take the stage at 9 p.m. and delight the crowd with the U2 live concert experience, playing the hits and classics that have made U2 one of the biggest bands in the world and Ireland’s No. 1 musical export.

The restaurant will feature a traditional St. Patrick’s Day menu with smoked salmon, Gaelic steak, Irish stuffed chicken, corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, bangers and mash, Irish potato soup, bread and butter pudding, and homemade Bailey’s ice cream for dessert. Along the street, crowds can enjoy fish and chips, chicken tenders, corn beef sandwiches, hotdogs, and Irish beverages. In addition, JohnMartin’s will donate a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Coral Gables Rotary Club. The Rotary Club is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in their local communities and around the world. JohnMartin’s has been continually recognized for its cuisine by publications that voted the restaurant “Best Pub Food.” The restaurant features live entertainment Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, from Contemporary Top 40 hits to rock to today’s popular Irish ballads. It also has the Comedy Night on Thursday nights beginning at 10 p.m., featuring professional stand-up comedian Freddy Stebbins. JohnMartin’s is located at 253 Miracle Mile. South Florida’s new Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center On January 18th, 2010, Gastroenterology Care Center launched a new medical center of excellence, the “Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center”, with an educational program lead by Board Certified Physician, James Leavitt, MD at its main location at Galloway Medical Center. The event was a success and attended by patients, friends, and family members eager to learn more about Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis treatment and management options. Dr. Leavitt, a national speaker and governor of the American College of Gastroenterology, presented important information about the state of healthcare quality, access, and how it relates to patients with the debilitating disease of Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), it is estimated that as many as one million Americans have inflammatory bowel disease -- with that number evenly split between Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Dr. Leavitt spoke enthusiastically and very knowledgably about the newest technology and treatments available to patients. “Our group started the Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center in order to fulfill our mission and assist patients who are diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease,”

said James Leavitt, MD, Director of the Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center. “Our team of board certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nutritionists, and infusion nurses combine their clinical expertise and experience to provide patients with a unique setting dedicated to the care of IBD patients under one roof”. Along with speaking of medical advances, Dr. Leavitt introduced the team members to the new Crohn’s and Colitis Care Center. Benefits to its members include a priority access phone line, support groups, nutritional advice, a website with IBD educational content, a patient web portal, and additional benefits. At the end of the presentation, attendees took advantage of the opportunity to sign up to become members and toured the newly remodeled office that now includes a state-of-the-art imaging center with CT and Ultrasound, as well as in-office IV infusion for Remicade treatments. Gastroenterology Care Center is a division of GastroHealth, PL, a single-specialty medical group comprised of 26 physicians with practices throughout Miami-Dade. Infiniti M is a luxury sedan with style and performance Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Infiniti M sedan is in the fifth year of its second-generation design and it continues as an outstanding example of a mid-size premium sedan. The Infiniti M emphasizes performance and user-focused technology, and offers a wide selection of engine, driveline and equipment choices. There’s also a spacious cabin wrapped in a sporty exterior, coupled with a marvelous driving experience. The 2010 Infiniti M is available in M35 and M45 models, each offered in rear-wheel drive or with Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent AllWheel Drive system. The Infiniti M45 and M45x AWD come with a 325-hp 4.5-liter V8, while the M35 and M35x AWD are powered by a 303-hp 3.5-liter V-6 (17/25 mpg). A special Sport Package (rear-wheel drive models only) adds a higher level of performance, with an advanced Rear Active Steer system, sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels and tires, and unique body treatments. Every 2010 Infiniti M utilizes an enhanced

next-generation FM (Front Mid-ship) platform also used on the sibling G37 Sedan, G37 Coupe, EX35 and FX premium crossover SUV. The refined FM platform positions the engine behind the front axle for an optimized front-to-rear weight balance, which factors in weight transfer during driving maneuvers. The Infiniti M really is a nice blend of luxury and sport styling, with an expressive grille and crystal-look headlight clusters, large aluminum-alloy wheels, low profile tires, and a stable, wide-track posture for a dynamic look. The M’s low hoodline flows into anchored shoulders and a fluid roofline, contributing to the sporty silhouette. Infiniti M models equipped with the optional Sport Package also have unique front and rear bumpers, headlight color, side sills and 19inch wheels and tires. The Infiniti M’s long wheelbase and short overhangs allow for a roomy interior and sporty exterior dimensions. Wide front and rear tracks add to handling stability, while the overall width enhances interior and trunk space. The M also has lightweight body components, including aluminum-alloy inner and outer door panels, hood and decklid panels. Inside, the interior design combines a driver-oriented cockpit with luxury and detail. The instrument panel has “Fine Vision” elec-

troluminescent gauges, “gear-like” rings on the instrument cluster meters and unique aluminum trim surface texturing. Other interior highlights include a large center console, wood trim, climate-controlled front seats, standard XM Satellite Radio and options such as heated power reclining rear seats. The 2010 M continues as a showcase of Infiniti’s technology, including Intelligent Cruise Control and the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, an advanced

Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with touch-screen, a 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback, and available XM NavTraffic. Base price on our 2010 Infiniti M35 test car was $45,800. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
