Biscayne Bay Pilots Association celebrating centennial of service BY YANEISY BLANCO

T

he Biscayne Bay Pilots Association, the association of harbor pilots serving the Port of Miami’s maritime traffic needs and a member association of the Florida Harbor Pilots Association, has announced that 2011 marks 100 years of collaboration with the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County in the growth of the local maritime industry. To commemorate the occasion, the pilots have published a history book, authored by Captain Andrew D. Melick, chronicling their role in the events that led to the establishment of Miami as a port town at the turn of the 20th Century and the evolution of the city and its seaport since. The book is edited by Miami historian Dr. Paul George. “Forty-four harbor pilots have played an intricate role in the development of Biscayne Bay as a major seaport over the last century,” said Captain John Jacobsen, chair of the Biscayne Bay Pilots Association. “We are honored to be celebrating our collaboration with the Port of Miami and our contribution to the safety, environmental integrity and economic development of this beautiful port city.” There currently are 16 pilots serving within the association, all of whom graduated from federal or state maritime academies and sailed on oceangoing vessels for many years, typically a decade or more, before training to become harbor pilots. Most of them hold unlimited master’s licenses in the merchant marine. Harbor pilots in Miami have safely handled the navigation of hundreds of thousands of ships during the past century; they currently pilot approximately 7,000 ships sailing in and out of Biscayne Bay annually. Miami pilots stand 12-hour watches on a rotating schedule and are open for business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. “The Port of Miami joins the Biscayne

he Miami Science Museum (MiaSci) recently was awarded a $75,000 grant by Chase to implement the Girls SPICE (Science Program Inspiring Creative Exhibits) project. The grant will allow the museum to work with Charles R. Drew Middle School’s Visual and Performing Arts Magnet Program to implement an after school and summer program targeted to female students in grades 7-8. The Girls SPICE project addresses the need to cultivate diversity in preparing the next generation of female scientists. “Our nation’s need for a world-class science and technology workforce has never been greater, requiring that all members of our population have the opportunity and the resources to pursue successful science and technology-related studies and careers,” said Judy Brown, EdD, senior vice president of education, Miami Science Museum.

Harbor pilots within the Biscayne Bay Pilots Association have trained extensively to handle these mammoth ships as part of their commitment to continue serving the ever-evolving maritime transportation industry in Miami. “This centennial occasion serves not only to review our history but also to look forward to the future,” said Captain Melick, author of the book A Century of Service, A History of the Biscayne Bay Pilots. “We have been a part of every milestone marking the development of Biscayne Bay as a seaport, and we will continue to be an integral link in the chain of progress.”

In the latter part of the 19th Century, prompted by port stakeholders, pilots throughout the United States began to associate themselves in local groups, pool their resources and coordinate their work schedules in order to ensure the availability of a pilot, the efficient flow of port traffic and the safety of vessels. Pilotage by expert shiphandlers became compulsory in Miami in 1911 when the State of Florida first issued pilot licenses to Captains William McIntyre, John Sands and Henry Warren, the founding members of the Miami Bar Pilots Association, as the association was then known. State regulation of piloting guaranteed that the primary responsibility of the pilot would be to protect the safety of the citizens, the economic interests of the state and the integrity of the coastal environment from the damaging effects of ship collisions and groundings. Currently, there are 97 highly skilled and trained harbor pilots serving Florida’s 14 deepwater ports, all of whom trained for a minimum of two years in their respective ports before handling ships on their own. In a recent three-year period, Florida harbor pilots controlled the navigation of approximately 90,000 ships in Florida’s seaports, compiling an outstanding safety record. ‘Walk for the Animals’ coming to Bayfront Park, Feb. 19 Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB Dog owners, families and friends are in for another fun day at Bayfront Park, 301 N. Biscayne Blvd. in Downtown Miami, on Saturday, Feb. 19, 8:30 a.m., for this year’s “Walk for the Animals.” Among the notables participating with their pets will be University of Miami president Donna Shalala, the Leader of the Pack, and Miami Commissioner M a rc D. Sarnoff as grand marshal. Dedicated in memory of Randy Reed, an animal lover and dedicated volunteer of the Humane Society of Greater Miami, this year’s event is expected to draw more than 3,000 participants. Fun for youngsters includes a bounce house and inflatable basketball court, face painting, arts and crafts, games and more. Organizers also note there will be plenty of prizes and product samples from the event

sponsors and a bakery tent where you can get pastries and a great cup of coffee. The one mile stroll around the park — with or without a dog — begins at 10 a.m., followed by award presentations. The minimum donation for walkers is $50 for a single and $100 for a family with two adults and two children. The National Crime Prevention Council conducted a poster contest recently receiving more than 100 entries from youth across the country. Fifteen of those entries were from children who are clients of the May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic, owned and operated by the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC). While none of those entries won, club member Mireya Kilmon considers them all winners. Congrats to the club on encouraging our young people to participate and be engaged in our community in such a positive way. A Gold Rush Casino Night fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5, 8 p.m., to support the club’s dental clinic that provides more than $160,000 in free dental care annually to children in need. GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club members invite all to join the fun — in costume or

not — at the CGWC clubhouse, 1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Tickets are only $25 per person and include entertainment, food and silent auction with a cash bar. The silent auction offers an opportunity to bid on fabulous vacations like a three-night stay at Hilton’s Agoura Hills Resort in California, gift certificates at great restaurants and stores, jewelry, art and much more. For tickets, call event chair Pam Schaefer at 305 6071722. In other club activity for charity, the GFWC Cocoplum Woman’s Club conducted a book review on the morning of Jan. 19 to benefit Casa Valentina, a non-profit that helps young women in the transition from foster care to independent living. Rosann Whitten reviewed Leopatra, A Life by Stacy Schiff, a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer who brings to life the most intrigu-

ing woman of the world — Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt. Finally, local financial planner Rick Tonkinson and his wife, Margarita, just returned from Ohio on a trip to hear the Cleveland Orchestra. While in Cleveland, the couple made a visit to the famous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Some of you also may recall that beloved former Junior Orange Bowl executive director Paul Olingy was part of the team that coordinated the grand opening ceremonies for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1995. Olingy now is in “festival heaven” working for Disney in California. Until next time, keep making each day count. acrylic. His original paintings and his depictions of sea life have also been featured as wall murals and in apparel lines popular with sport fishermen. Growing up in Jamaica, Harvey spent many hours fishing and diving with his father. While he often replicated the natural creations he observed daily in paintings, his fascination with marine biology initially drew him to a career in the sciences. He attended Scotland’s Aberdeen University, graduating with highest honors in Marine Biology in 1977, and shortly after obtained a Doctorate degree in Fisheries Management from the University of the West Indies. He returned to Jamaica in 1985 and exhibited a series of 44 original pen and ink drawings which depicted the story of “The Old Man & the Sea.” A result of the exhibition’s success, Harvey began painting full time by 1988 and began traveling the world to gain more knowledge of marine life, diving into the world of underwater photography and painting. Harvey is also an advocate for marine conservation and the co-founder of the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as well as the

This year’s chefs will represent successful restaurants and hotels from South Florida, including some nationally recognized authors. Earlier this year, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival was named one of the top three fine arts festivals in the nation by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The Arts Festival was voted one of the best fine art shows for the seventh year and remains the top fine art event in the history of the magazine’s 200 Best.

complete floor to ceiling “face lift”, and an updated concession stand serving beer and wine. “We wanted to open the theater as quickly as possible because we knew the local residents and business were suffering with out one, but our premier concept always included more. We’re so excited to see the full vision come to fruition,” explains Mike Whalen, Paragon’s CEO. He continues, “Our amenity package creates the best theater going experience in Miami, at a price point similar to other Miami theaters. We’ve established a unique ‘companion’ to the theater where our audience can enjoy a drink and a bite before or after a movie, watch a game at our bar or a viewing in our

screening room, or host a private event in a way that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the market.” Mirroring the modern design of the theater and in support of local artists, Paragon commissioned famed Miami pop-artist Stephen Gamson to create exclusive pieces for the Backlot space. "It is often at a movie theater where new friendships are forged, taste is defined and our minds can travel. My art relates to pop culture and communication, therefore, I am especially excited to be a part of this experience," says Gamson of the exciting installation. The Prestige Audi Screening Room, a partnership with the country’s number

one Audi dealership, will serve as an exciting entertainment venue. A permanent calendar of events will include weekly classic and foreign film nights, art presentations, concerts and live TV broadcasts such as Miami Heat gamesand American Idol. Additionally, patrons can rent out the venue for private parties, screenings, sports viewings, or meetings. “I can’t think of anywhere else you can see a UM game on a 25’ Jumbo Screenduring the day and watch a screening of the Godfather at night,” says Whalen. NWSA to honor Daniel Lewis for 24 years as dance dean BY MARIA M. FLORES

After 24 years serving the South Florida community as dean of dance at New World School of the Arts, the recognized visual and performing arts conservatory in downtown Miami, Daniel (Danny) Lewis will become the first founding dean to retire from the school after having served since it opened its doors in 1987. “Danny Lewis has been a cornerstone in the development of New World School of the Arts since its inception,” said Jeffrey Hodgson, interim provost at New World School of the Arts. “As a former dean, I had the privilege to observe how his love for the school, its faculty, and students translates into passionate leadership. It is an honor to work with him and to support him as provost in his quest to nurture and train the performing artists of the future. “Danny’s legacy will live on in the accomplishments of all of the students who have passed through our studios and classrooms.” To celebrate Dean Lewis’ tenure, New World School of the Arts will present “Daniel Lewis – A Life of Dance” tribute concert on Saturday, Feb. 5, in downtown Miami, preceded by a “Dinner with the

Dean” VIP reception. In addition, NWSA will announce the newly established Daniel Lewis Dance Scholarship Fund during the concert. Reception and performance details: Tribute VIP Reception — “Dinner with the Dean,” 6 p.m., La Loggia Restaurant, 68 W. Flagler St., downtown Miami; VIP reception is $150 per person (Includes Dinner with the Dean and reserved seating at Tribute performance); tickets available by calling 305-237-3753. Tribute Performance — 8 p.m., Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 E. Flagler St., downtown Miami; general admission $35 and $20 per person; tickets available online at nwsa.mdc.edu. “It’s a bittersweet feeling,” said Lewis who considers himself “lucky” to have been offered the founding dean of dance position at NWSA more than 24 years ago. “Having the opportunity to create an eight-year program at NWSA has been one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences of my adult life. This has enabled me to completely immerse myself in developing a program for dancers and choreographers who will be the next generation of artists and leaders in the field.

“Being around young students most of my life, first as a dancer, choreographer, and then as an educator has allowed me the opportunity to help them explore and realize their artistic dreams,” Lewis added. “As an artist I feel I understand the needs, aspirations and frustrations of

young developing artists.” For more information about the “Daniel Lewis – A Life of Dance” Tribute Concert, call 305-237-3684. For VIP tickets call Rafael Maldonado at 305-237-3753. Performance tickets are available at nwsa.mdc.edu.

The Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) – Commission on Colleges has approved Florida International University’s reaffirmation of accreditation. The decision represents years of planning and documentation for the university’s Compliance Certification Report, Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and March 2010 site visit. “The reaffirmation came with no reservations and no follow-up requirements,” said FIU provost Douglas Wartzok. “It was a clean, complete, unqualified reaffirmation.” The QEP is a carefully designed plan for enhancing student learning. In order to have its accreditation reaffirmed, FIU needed to design a focused QEP addressing a single topic — one that inspires and pulls together the entire university community to support higher levels of student learning and achievement. FIU’s Global Learning for Global Citizenship QEP is the university’s roadmap for enabling every undergraduate to act as an

engaged global citizen. The implementation of this five-year initiative marks a new era in FIU’s World’s Ahead curriculum reform. Under the direction of Hilary Landorf, associate professor of education, the QEP already has gained national recognition for its innovative approach to integrating curriculum and co-curriculum for global learning. Nearly every academic, Student Affairs and administrative department has been involved in the development and design of Global Learning for Global Citizenship. “This strong commitment to the QEP, along with ongoing assessment of student learning outcomes of each degree program, contributed to FIU’s successful reaffirmation,” Wartzok said. Florida International University is one of the 25 largest universities in the nation, with more than 42,000 students. Nearly 130,000 FIU alumni live and work in South Florida. Its colleges and schools offer more than 200 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in fields such as engineering, international relations and law. 1450 Brickell tower in 2010 leases 230,470 square feet BY ALLIE SCHWARTZ

In a sign that Miami’s corporate sector continues to place value on premium office space despite economic volatility, 1450 Brickell Avenue, the class A office building that came online in Miami’s Brickell Financial District in the first quarter of 2010, completed 230,470 rentable square feet of new lease transactions last year. This brisk activity set pace for the market and solidified 1450 Brickell’s standing as Miami’s premier class A office property. The transactions completed — along with the 80,000 square foot space taken by law firm Bilzin Sumberg in September 2009 — bring the total amount of space leased in the building to roughly 305,000 rentable square feet. The leases finalized in 2010 included a healthy mix of major corporate users, local and entrepreneurial firms, multinational companies, and new-to-market tenants. 1450 Brickell’s 2010 additions include among others: financial giant JP Morgan Chase, BNY/Mellon, executive search firm Korn/Ferry International, private investment firm H.I.G. Neat Stuff setting the stage for fabulous Casino Night BY GABRIEL PINERES

The non-for-profit organization Neat Stuff Inc. is ready to host its first Casino Night fundraising event on Jan. 29, from 7 to 11 p.m., at the newly renovated Coral Gables Country Club. The Casino Night is planned to be a fabulous night filled with “Las Vegas” style fun intended to help raise funds for an organization that aids South Florida youth. Neat Stuff was founded in 1995 with the mission to provide free new clothing and school uniforms to abused, neglected, abandoned and other at-risk children. Neat Stuff was created by local community child advocate Phyllis Krug who identified a critical need for children involved in the social services system. Today, under the leadership of executive director Franklin Monjarrez, the organization is the only agency of its kind in South Florida serving an average of 8,000 at-risk children and distributing over $700,000 worth of new clothes, school uniforms and accessories annually.

The Neat Stuff Casino Night is planned to be a spectacular affair. Fittingly the upscale, newly renovated Coral Gables Country Club was chosen for this event. Guests will experience a red carpet welcome complete with Las Vegas style showgirls, which are sure to set the mood for a “Sin City” inspired event. After ticketing, guests will receive their “play money” and enter the Coral Grand Ballroom and be transported to Las Vegas for one night. If the tables aren’t their fancy or just taking a break between bets guests are encouraged to take part in the fabulous silent and live auction. Music will fill the air and palates will be pleased as guests savor delicious hors d’oeuvres throughout the evening. The Neat Stuff Casino Night is sure to be a spectacular event but more importantly it is an event to bring people together for the welfare of less fortunate children in our community. Pre-paid tickets to the Neat Stuff Casino Night are $75 and $100 at the door. For more information on tickets send email to <casinonight@neatstuffhelpskids.org>.

Equus is Hyundai’s entry in large luxury car segment Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Hats off to Hyundai for the new top-of-theline Equus, a stunningly beautiful and technologically excellent automobile. If you’ve been thinking about buying a Mercedes S Class sedan, Lexus LS 460 or a BMW 7 Series, but the price tags have kept your wallet in your pocket, then take a look at the Equus with a starting price of under $60,000. Hyundai has had the Equus on the production boards for several years as engineers worked to come up with the company’s initial offering in the large luxury car segment. With its European design, comfortable interior and leading edge automotive technology, the 2011 Equus is Hyundai’s signal to the world that it can engineer, design and build world class vehicles. Equus is offered in two models — Signature and Ultimate. Equus Signature has a starting price of $58,000 and comes with leather seating surfaces; Alcantara suede headliner; dual automat-

ic temperature control with air quality system; a 608-watt, 17-speaker Lexicon stereo system; heated and cooled front seats; heated steering wheel trimmed in wood and leather; illuminated scuff plates; illuminated door handles and door armrest, and all the bells and whistles you find in similar luxury sedans. Equus Ultimate, with a base price of $64,500, has everything that the Signature has and more, including separate rear seats that have elaborate massage technology, power headrests and footrests, separate entertainment controls and even a small refrigerated cooler in the center console. A forward-view camera allows for better visibility and a power trunk lid is standard. Equus is powered by Hyundai’s vaunted 4.6liter Tau V-8 engine with variable valve timing and mated to the six-speed ZF automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. The combination is amazingly quick, quiet and smooth and the handling is precise. The Equus is designed on what Hyundai calls its “Fluidic Sculpture” principle. Up front, the grille is taken from the Hyundai Genesis and it has been neatly integrated with the headlights, which wrap around and blend into the fenders. The shortened front overhang allows the auto-cornering HID headlights to swivel effectively as the car turns. Along the side the car has a fast roofline and a contour crease across the top of the front

Biscayne National Park announces Jones Lagoon Canoe Adventures BY GARY BREMEN

This winter and spring, Biscayne National Park and the park’s concessionaire (Biscayne National Underwater Park Inc.) will offer all-day ranger-guided canoe trips to some of the park’s most pristine locations, including Adams Key, Totten Key, Hurricane Creek and Jones Lagoon. The trip will be offered to experienced paddlers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 29, Feb. 26, Mar. 19, Apr. 2 and Apr. 16. The cost of the trip is $35 per person, which includes boat transportation to Adams Key, a shared canoe, paddle and a life jacket. Space is limited; reservations may be made by calling 305-2307275, ext. 000. The islands surrounding Jones Lagoon have been witness to the activities of pirates, rumrunners and hardy settlers, not the least of whom were Israel Lafayette Jones; his wife,

Moiselle, and their two sons, King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. For nearly 100 years, members of this pioneering African-American family survived and thrived in the crystal clear waters that now make up the southern part of Biscayne National Park. Lancelot Jones is familiar to many park visitors because he was the subject of the Biscayne National Park segment on the 2009 PBS series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea by filmmaker Ken Burns. Participants are responsible for their own water, sunblock, insect repellent and lunch. Binoculars, cameras, sunglasses, a hat and other comfort/convenience items are encouraged, but all items have the potential to get wet. Trips depart from the park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center, located at 9700 SW 328 St., nine miles east of Homestead. Call 305-230-7275, ext. 000, for more information.

How To Feel Comfortable About Your Investment Decisions

By Rick Tonkinson

Certified Financial Planner CFP®

night. Don’t rely on a sales rep to tell you what your investment profile is because the sales rep may adjust your profile to fit the suitability of the investment they are trying to sell you.

Focus on the Purpose of Your Investment Do you need to put money away for a rainy day? Make a “To Do List” of items that you want the money to attain such as vacation, education or wedding. Give each item a specific cost such as $5,000 for a vacation. Determine which item motivates you to attain it. Motivation that is ratcheted up is called passion. If you find a passion for an item, that will be your top priority. How quickly you want to attain the item will help determine what investment to consider. Again decide on the specific purpose of the money and then consider your options. After 18 years of being a money manager, I have consistently heard how many people do not feel comfortable with their investment decisions. Have you ever second-guessed the investment decisions you have made? Do words like foolish, dumb, wrong, confused, guess, uncertain, frustrated, and overwhelmed describe your feelings? You are not alone in feeling uncomfortable about decisions you have made. Would you like to feel better about your investment decisions? If the answer is yes, then here are some basic steps to consider: Determine if You are a Saver or an Investor If you need guaranteed stability, then you are a saver. When the stock market is positive, many people say that they want to invest and that they are an “investor.” They say that they can tolerate the volatility of the stock market and that their investment time horizon is long term (greater than 10 years). Then 2008 comes along and the stock market (S&P 500) drops 34% and the “investors” now are running for safety as “savers”. Their long-term time horizon has decreased from 10 years to 10 minutes and the risk tolerance has decreased from moderate to minimal. You need to be honest with yourself as to what degree you are a saver or an investor. This is a personal decision that in a perfect world should not be influenced by your family, friends or coworkers. There are investments for savers and investments for investors. Before you select from the thousand of choices, decide what will make you sleep at

Be Realistic with what You have to Invest As an “investor,” you need to accept that you are prepared to lose part or all of your investment. If this risk is not comfortable for you, then you are a saver. There are times when people have borrowed on the equity of their home and invest in the stock market because the potential gains offset the risk of losing their home. People make reckless decisions so that they can attain the item they want quicker than what is realistic. Plan so that if it takes a year to attain an item, you give yourself two years to attain it. If you attain the item in one year, that’s good but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t make your deadline. The important thing is to keep working toward what you want.

Law firm brings holiday spirit to youngsters

Miami-based law firm Podhurst Orseck got into the Christmas spirit on Dec. 14 by hosting its annual “Gifts for Kids” event, which welcomes special needs children, like George (pictured) from the pre-kindergarten special education class (ages 3-5) at Air Base Elementary in Homestead. Upon arrival in the firm’s downtown Miami offices, the 16 children were greeted by Santa Claus (as played by partner Robert C. Josefsberg) and treated to coloring books, crayons, and lunch. The day ended with the opening of presents, which were donated by the firm’s employees.
