Register for classes? Check. Visa? Check. Passport? Check. Prepare to travel halfway across the world? Check. These are only some of the things on an international student’s checklist. They come from different countries, including China, France, South Africa and Iceland, and traveling from their home isn’t always the easiest thing to experience. Walking down McKinley Avenue or studying in Bracken Library, we see international students, but do we ever take the time to get to know them? Everyone has heard the expression, “Birds of a feather lock together.” Maybe it’s time to group ourselves with birds of a different feather. I have a roommate from China who doesn’t speak English well and isn’t quick to understand many American traditions. Living with her gives me a small peek into her world and helps me to understand her culture better.

I came to ind out that the only difference between international students and American students is the language barrier. Although they come from a different country, international students aren’t that different than Americans. They are still young adults, they still like going to the movies, and they still like hearing
the latest gossip, even if it is in another language. In a generation where global communication is key, making connections and getting to know students of various backgrounds is important and can beneit you in the future. Pittenger Student Center Room 102. The program gives students a chance to learn about the culture of a different country by having a student native to that country speak. Countries featured in the series have included France, Ghana, China, Sweden, Nigeria and India. I ind learning about different countries and cultures an interesting and unique way to see how people from other places live. Take some time and get to know someone with a different background than you. It will be a rewarding experience.

Taurus (April 20-May 20) Part of you wants to be in the spotlight, soaking in that applause. Another part of you just wants control. Package your act with enthusiasm. Gemini (May 21-June 21) Ease into group activities. Your enthusiasm can carry events forward if you reserve it for the right moment. Act like there’s no pressure.

team in sports. After Sunday’s first-round 95-39 thrashing of the Southern Jaguars, Geno Auriemma’s crew re-made NCAA women’s basketball history after breaking their own record of 73 straight wins. I doubt half the teams in the league even know how to count to 73 let alone win that many games in a row. I expect Maya Moore and company to take home their second-consecutive NCAA trophy, making it the sixth championship in the last decade. 4. Upset Specials. It’s always fun to watch the lower seeds knock off the big guns, and with three double-digit seeds in the men’s Sweet 16 this year, it hasn’t disappointed. Among them are 12th ranked Cornell, 11th seed Washington Huskies, and the improbable 10th seed St. Mary’s Gaels residing from the Bay Area. First of all, I didn’t even know St. Mary’s (enrollment: 4,768) existed until two weeks ago, and never in a million years would I have
them going this far. The Washington Huskies further proved they still can play some basketball out West, and you’ve got to give it up for the Ivy League—that Big Red team is playing with more finesse than a stick of my favorite Wrigley’s gum. On the women’s side, the San Diego St. Aztecs pulverized sixthranked Texas in their own house, and seventh-seed Gonzaga took down the Texas A&M Aggies in Bulldog-like fashion, 72-71. 5. Northern Iowa. Speaking of upsets, nothing was more special than watching the Panthers representing the MVC (Scott Gleeson, you called it). Much to the dismay of our brackets—including both mine and President Al Bowman’s—the Panthers were led by the clutch shooting of Ali Farokhmanesh and caught everyone by surprise as they clawed past the No. 1 team in the country. That win was bigger than UNI center Jordan Eglseder’s shoe size. I don’t know what they put in the water up in Cedar Falls, but it’s got this team firing on all cylinders at the right time and it’s, “Awesome, Baby, with a Capital A!”
