Chippewas travel to Allendale Meet a homecoming for transfer Johnson

Central to play four games in Troy Cox Classic

By John Evans Staff Reporter

Tanisha Johnson will compete against her old team this weekend at Grand Valley State University for the first time since transferring to CMU. The junior high jumper and the women’s track team travel to Allendale this weekend to compete in the Grand Valley Big Meet. The meet is a two-day event, starting at 4 p.m. today and continuing the following day at 10 a.m. on Saturday. “I am really looking forward to the meet,” Johnson said. “I cannot wait to see my former teammates and still friends, but at the same time I want to remain focused on competing and cheering on the team as we enter the finals stretch at such a big meet.” Grand Valley has a brand new

300-meter indoor track and the Chippewas want to use it to their advantage. The track is similar Kent State’s 300-meter track, also Tanisha Johnson the location of the Mid-American Conference Championships this season. “I am looking for a bit of an extra sweet Valentine’s Day with the opportunity to see everyone from GVSU, and CMU competing as we move forward toward our conference championship,” Johnson said. “The sugar on top is being able to show my former team and coaches what I have been up to for the past few months.” At the “Big Meet,” the Chippewas will compete against Eastern Michigan and Grand Valley for a second time and Miami University for the first time this season. “Miami is a MAC school that

we have not seen before and Eastern has some great runners,” said Erin Dillon, middle distance runner and team captain. “This meet gives us another opportunity to see how we are matching up against the other MAC schools. We are looking forward to this weekend because it is our big meet before the MAC championship.” Although the Chippewas have yet to see Miami this year, they seek to match up with them all around the track. The Chippewas are also using the first-place finish last weekend at the MAC-Quadrangler meet as motivation. “We are really looking forward to competing on their surface,” Dillon said. “Our whole team has been working hard this whole season and it is another opportunity to cash in against great competition.”

The softball team will travel to a warmer climate this weekend when it competes in the Troy Cox Classic in New Mexico. The Chippewas open their season with a pair of games against University of Texas-El Paso, and individual games against New Mexico State, Saint Mary’s and Eastern Illinois. “Finally getting to play outside is going to be great,” said senior pitcher Ali Pettit. “The weather is supposed to be beautiful in New Mexico and we are definitely looking forward to playing on dirt, not turf.” Central competed in the tournament in the 2007 sea-

son and finished with a 1-4 record. The tournament opens today at 2 p.m. MST against UTEP, and contin- Ali Pettit ues with a nightcap against NMSU. UTEP opened their season last week with a 2-4 finish at the Kajikawa Classic. The team finished the tournament with a decisive 7-4 victory over the host team and No. 2 in the nation Arizona State. The host New Mexico State began its season on Feb. 5 and is 6-0. CMU faced the Aggies twice in the 2007 season. Both ended in a loss for the Chippewas. Central was picked by the Mid-American Conference coaches as the favorite to be the West Division champion. “We expect to win right out of

the gate this season,” Pettit said. “We want to start strong and finish even stronger so we will be in a position to win the MAC and make it to NCAA regionals. Everyone is on the same page and we are ready to compete.” Returnering players include senior centerfielder Tracy Kaatz, who led the team with 37 steals in 39 attempts. The total was third in the conference last season. Junior pitcher Kari Seddon returns to the team after leading the team with 117 strikeouts last season. She struck out 49 batters looking, a total that placed her fifth in the conference. Pettit tied Seddon in wins last season with ten. “We are very excited to get our season under way,” Pettit said. “We have worked very hard in the off season and we are ready to see all of our preparation pay off.”

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY If you kick back this year and assume everything is fine, you’ll get further and further behind, sometimes quite rapidly. So don’t do that, OK? Assume there’s something to watch. Pay attention. To get the advantage, check the day’s rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0 the most challenging. Aries (March 21-April 19) – Today is an 8 – Don’t get all upset if somebody’s rude to you or your mate. Don’t let it keep on happening, but smile when you lay down the law. It’ll drive the big jerk crazy. Taurus (April 20-May 20) – Today is a 6 – Don’t try to explain what you’re doing to a person who won’t understand. Be ready if you’re challenged, though. Make sure you’re being effective. No goofing around. Gemini (May 21-June 21) – Today is a 9 – The caution flag is out for communications regarding money. Don’t get into a fight about finances; it’s not a good time to talk. Reschedule for late next week. Cancer (June 22-July 22) – Today is a 5 – Everybody has an idea, and all of them are different. Can you get them to agree on anything? Probably not. Might as well save your breath, and bake a batch of cookies. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) – Today is a 7 – This is not exactly your lucky day, so don’t take risks. Let your competitors do that. You play it close to the chest. Don’t telegraph your next move, either.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) – Today is a 6 – You have lots of work, and the worries that go with it. Before you get sucked under again, call out for a little help. Somebody nearby will lend a hand. You’re not alone. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) – Today is an 8 – Your place may be a mess, but is it a creative process? Look at what you want to accomplish. Don’t get stuck in the muck you have to go through to get from here to there. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) – Today is a 6 – Best to keep your opinions to yourself for a little while. They aren’t firmly founded on solid fact, as you already know. Better to keep your words private than have to eat them later, in public. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) – Today is a 7 – You’d love to tell that arrogant pedant exactly what you think. That is not, however, a great idea. So do not go there. Avoid even the nearness to temptation that could cause an outburst of emotion. Stifle. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) – Today is a 5 – You can still get your message across, if it’s carefully chosen. Know that will be more difficult now. Don’t get overly chatty. Make every word count for three. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) – Today is a 6 – Continue to turn and look both ways before crossing the street. This goes for listening to gossip, too. You’ll do better to stay put, take your phone off the hook and concentrate on business. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) – Today is a 5 – If anything can go wrong, the odds are good that it will. So be very careful with your words and with your actions now. You’ve been warned. Don’t get too far into the gunk.

Jacolby formed a rap group in high school, and Javonte now writes and produces his own music under the name “Young Reala.” “We knew what (Clinton) would want and that’s not to be drooling and crying all the time after his murder,” Beverly said. “To move on with our life and just do what we can.” Four years after his father’s death, Jacolby Hardiman is a freshman at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. He and his teammates attend a Halloween party at a Ramada Inn on Oct. 28, 2006. An argument ensues with a 16-year-old and his cousin about the cousin inappropriately

touching and upsetting the girls at the party. The two leave and return with a group. Gun shots are fired. Hardiman sees teammate and friend Terrist Parramore take shots to the head and chest. One grazes his spine. He is not able to walk for three months and will never play basketball again. Repressed memories return Jacolby Hardiman qualified academically for a collegiate scholarship when he graduated high school in 2006, but an uncorrected mistake on his transcript limited his opportunities. He had offers from several Division I schools, but chose to attend an Arkansas junior college. University of Arkansas at Fort Smith coach Josh Newman visited him three weeks before school started and offered him a scholarship. “Jacolby and I both took a chance on each other,” Newman said. “Jacolby had never visited, and I had never seen Jacolby

play.” Newman needed to fill a team after being hired just weeks before school began, and heard Jacolby’s name from an assistant coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. But before the season could begin, Terrist Parramore’s shooting rocked the foundation of Newman’s early tenure at UAFS. “Jacolby’s situation was different because he had been through it,” Newman said. “It was not easy by any means — it was a really emotional time. He progressed through it, he continued to fight and showed toughness.” Jacolby said the incident made him appreciate basketball that much more. “When Terrist got shot, it made me realize you’ve got to play hard every time you get on the court because you never know when it can be taken away from you,” he said. Jacolby Hardiman sits on the floor of his apartment next to UAFS coach Josh Newman two weeks after the Halloween party. Hardiman is somber and speechless. He feels helpless. His good friend Vince Alvaro is dead; shot in his own neighborhood while Hardiman was attending school 800 miles away. The two talk into the night about life and what’s important, how to be remembered and how some people just don’t understand the value of life. a Division I scholarship closer to home. He was offered several opportunities after his freshman season, but decided against attending schools like Texas State, North Texas and LaSalle. As he returned for his sophomore season, Hardiman got a phone call from his girlfriend in Milwaukee, Ashley Hill-Cawthorn, that changed his life. She was pregnant. “At first I was like, man, I don’t have the money to have a baby,” he said. “But then, I realized I had a very supportive family, so it really helps a lot.” As Jacolby tried to make as many trips as he could to support Hill-Cawthorn, Central Michigan University assistant coach Darren Kohne began keeping tabs on his sophomore season at UAFS. Kohne liked his physical nature and defensive presence. He offered him a spot on CMU’s team, asking him to come up north to Mount Pleasant soon after. On May 2, 2008, Jaden Jacolby Clinton Hardiman was born. Jacolby Hardiman was now a father. But there was no time to celebrate — before he could attend CMU, Jacolby had to pass 12 credits during the summer at UAFS to become eligible. “I was setting up study hall for him and making him check in with librarians,” Kohne said. “He’d call me three times a day and I was forcing him to do every practice assignment in every class. He was not having it. “A common comment that would come up was, ‘Well, you’re not my daddy.’ I said, ‘I’m not trying to be your daddy Jacolby, I’m trying to help you become a suc-

cessful man,’” he said. With Kohne and CMU head coach Ernie Zeigler pushing him in the classroom, Jacolby received the credits he needed and moved to Michigan. It was closer to his girlfriend and son, but was still a six-hour trek to Milwaukee. “He has such responsibility, such a pride that he has about it,” Zeigler said. “I think it also drives him to become more comfortable with the other issues that he’s dealt with in his past and what’s in front of him now.” Jaden’s birth gave Jacolby a new link to his father. But he said it’s difficult to be away from home for so long while Jaden nears nine months. “It’s tough, but he’s so important in my life because I was so important to my dad in his life,” he said. “My dad, he was always around me, so I try to be around my son as much as possible.” His mother takes care of Jaden about four days per week and said whenever Jacolby has extra money or time, his son comes first. “He’s just put me in the mind of my husband,” she said. “My husband was a provider and Jacolby is trying to do that too. Every bit of change he gets he’s buying something for the baby and when he comes home he spends time.” The stipend he receives from the athletics department usually goes to Jaden. When CMU played at Chicago State on Nov. 2, Jaden saw his father play for the first time. “Jacolby is still in a situation where he’s trying to figure himself out,” Kohne said. “That’s probably a scary thought for him, or for any young person. But at the same time it’s a good

What’s next? Jacolby Hardiman is on his way toward an entrepreneurship degree and one day wants to own his own sporting goods store. He plans to stay at CMU through both summer sessions and graduate in May 2010. Before every game, he still thinks of his father. And when he looks in the crowd, the seats looks emptier than ever. But he has his own responsibilities now. “I think people go through their lives with unsettled scores, with unfinished conversations with their loved ones,” said Kohn, who along with Zeigler, lost his own father in his 20s. “He’s a great kid with a long way to go to becoming a great man, but he recognizes that — that’s half the battle.” His family has attended several of his games this season. Hill-Cawthorn brings Jaden whenever she can so he can watch his father play the game he loves — the game that his grandfather loved. Hardiman has started 21 of CMU’s 22 games and averages 10 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. “The best thing about Jacolby is his willingness to compete,” Newman said. “Any time in life when you’re faced with a tragic event like that, you’ve got to learn to compete — you’ve got to fight back. “Those kinds of events can knock people down and put people in the doldrums, but Jacolby’s not like that. He’s a fighter.”

The Bobcats (8-14, 4-6 MAC) have lost four of their last five games this season but have a balanced team and “a couple of kids that just play really, really hard,” Ball State coach Kelly Packard said. “I don’t think [Ohio’s offense has] been super consistent, but they definitely have the personnel to give you some headaches on the offensive glass,” Packard said. “They got a couple players that consistently go for extra attempts on the offensive end.” The Cardinals (16-8, 8-2 MAC) have a balanced offensive attack

as well. In conference play, the Cardinals’ starting five players all average 9.8 points per game or more, and are led by sophomore forward Emily Maggert’s 13.8 points per game. Packard said sometimes teams can key on one or two players with a defensive plan any Cardinal is capable of leading the team in scoring on any night. “I would like to think it’s not as easy to devise a defensive strategy against us,” Packard said. “We don’t have one player carrying the bulk of our offensive production. We’ve been very, very consistent at having three, and many times four people finish a game in double figures.” In order for the Cardinals to pick up their 12th win of the season at home, they will have to limit their turnovers, Packard said. “We played a good game [Wednesday] night,” Packard said. “I really felt like from the rebounding standpoint as happy as I’ve ever been with rebounding ... but we turned the ball over 23 times.” Packard said she was “fairly

Ball State lost 67-76 to Bowling Green. The Cardinals are 4-1 against MAC East opponents this year. “What stands out to me particularly was the Miami game here,” Packard said. “I thought that was a great basketball game that we put together. Love is like an 80’s pop band it starts out amazing, the band is rockin’, their presence is powerful, even emotional. You believe that there is meaning behind every word that is said. All you wanna do is just jump up and down and scream the lyrics in jubilation, but like many bands in the 80’s Love dies out. The songs get old and too routine Next thing you know the band can’t even get in to their spandex pants. Oh, they try be experimental and different, but it’s all just a facade. Let’s not kid ourselves. They no longer can go back to the good ole days. Sweetheart I think it’s time we put the band on hiatus. Happy V- Day!!!!

How to have a thrifty and charitable holiday season Claudia Buck McClatchy Newspapers

It's the season for giving. Especially to charities. Whether it's a door-to-door solicitor, the bell-ringer outside the shopping center or the charity envelopes arriving in your mailbox, everyone, it seems, could use a little holiday cheer. And despite the financial hardships that have plagued so many families, a majority of American consumers are in a charitable mood, according to a recent survey by American Express, which found 69 percent plan to do as much - or more - charity giving this year compared with last year, even while cutting back on gifts to family and friends. "People are ... cautious about giving money away," said Dan Schrauth, a wealth adviser with J.P. Morgan Private Bank in San Francisco. During the economy's boom years, he said, many individuals needed year-end charitable deductions. This year, with lagging investments and pinched paychecks, donations are less likely to be tax-motivated. "People realize that during challenging economic times, charitable organizations need contributions more than ever," said Schrauth. "Today, it's purely altruistic, which is nice." And all those good causes can use your help. Charitable

giving _ at $308 billion in 2008 _ was down 2 percent from the previous year, the first decline since 1987, according to the Illinois-based GivingUSA Foundation, which tracks charitable spending nationally. If you're motivated to give to charities this holiday season, here are some tips: Consider a Card Charity gift cards let you _ or your recipient _ choose where to donate, from African wildlife to Appalachian trails. Among groups dispensing such cards are, and TisBest, a Seattle-based nonprofit that creates custom-designed gift cards for individuals and companies, says its business has tripled to nearly 30,000 cards sold this year since it launched in 2007. Instead of sending a note saying, "I've made a donation to my favorite charity in your name," you send friends or family a personalized gift card for a specific amount, anywhere from $10 to $5,000. The recipient then "shops" online, choosing a charity from among some 250 on TisBest's site. "We're a way to turn a charitable donation into a great gift. It shows respect to the recipient because they have a choice where to give," said TisBest founder Erik Marks, who said the average card amount is $37.

Another site, DonorsChoose. org, connects you with teachers whose classrooms need everything from math flashcards to overhead projectors. You pick the school, the project and the amount you want to donate. Watch out for fraud Not everyone's intentions are charitable during the holidays, when phony solicitations can pop up online, at your door or in your mailbox. Don't feel pressured to donate and do confirm that the charitable group is legitimate. Web sites like or the Wise Giving Alliance, sponsored by the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb. org/us/charity, let you investigate charities based on their financial and organizational health. If you're online, be aware that phony e-mail addresses from pseudo-charities are prevalent. They often look like legitimate sites, but may contain a Web address that's one or two letters different. In reality, warns McAfee Inc., a Santa Clara-based computer security firm, "they are fake Web sites designed to steal donations, credit card information and the identities of donors." To avoid them, don't click on any links in a charitable pitch sent by e-mail; always type in the exact Web address yourself.

More than a check There's nothing wrong with writing a check to your favorite charity. But there are alternatives, such as IRA donations and charitable gift accounts. For those with a chunk to invest, Kevin Rose, a Charles Schwab branch manager in Roseville, Calif., said charitable gift accounts let donors set aside a single tax-deductible amount (minimum $5,000) that earns tax-deferred interest. At any time in the future, the donors can dole out individual gifts, as little as $100, to any public charity.

And if you're older than 70 {, you can make a tax-deductible donation to a charity directly from your IRA, using that amount as part of your annual mandatory withdrawal. Always check to see if your employer offers dollar-for-dollar matching contributions to your charity. But even if you can't financially afford to give this year, "it's never too late to start saving," said Rose. "If you want to make a sizable donation down the road, you can build toward that" by setting aside some savings now.

Keep a record For IRS tax purposes, a canceled check or bank statement is usually sufficient when you donate money or property less than $250. For larger donations, you'll need a dated receipt or letter from the charity confirming your donation. Also, if you donate via a charity event, your tax deduction is reduced by the fair market value of any meal, gift or other benefit you receive. For more details on IRS tax-deduction guidelines, go to (search for Publication 1771).

The New University wishes our readers a great Valentine’s Day!

Sophomore wide receiver Randall Cobb said he would not like to see a playoff in college football.

Q&A with Randall Cobb The sophomore wide receiver answers the questions everyone’s been wondering By Ben Jones

Q. Do you have any nicknames? A. Back home my family and friends call me ‘Mann.’ It came from when I was little, they called me ‘Little Mann,’ then once I got older they dropped ‘little.’

Q. Why’d you choose to wear No. 18? A. I wanted No. 7, but when I came in (then-senior corner-

back) David Jones had it. I wanted 12, but (then-senior wide receiver) Dicky (Lyons Jr.) had 12. So I just picked 18, something between me and (high school teammate and current UK wide receiver) Kyrus (Lanxter). Its reciprocal, 81, is the flipflop of 18.

Q. Favorite place to eat on or around campus? A. It has to either be BD’s Mongolian Grill in Hamburg or Tolly Ho. I’ll eat at Tolly Ho during the day sometimes.

Q. What has been your proudest moment at UK so far? A. Being on the field, being able to wear Dicky’s jersey and catch two touchdowns against Arkansas.

Everyone knows you’re a great athlete. You play quarterback, receiver, punt returner and even hold on kicks. But can you kick like Chad Ochocinco?

A. I have kicked a field goal and made it in practice. (UK

special teams) Coach Ort(mayer) saw it. He said he’d give me a chance one day in practice. I still haven’t got that chance. I’m still waiting on it.

Q. Maybe one day when you’re up by 50 points? A. Yeah, maybe I’ll get an extra point. Q. But can you kick and hold at the same time? A. I might be able to drop-kick it. I don’t know about kicking and holding at the same time.

If you weren’t playing football, what would you be doing?

A. I’d probably be a professional ping-pong player. I’d still be in school, I just probably wouldn’t be here. I’d be at a smaller school.

Q. What’s one thing people don’t know about you? A. I would say my eyes, but I think everyone knows I have green eyes. One thing most people don’t know about me is that I’d rather be alone most of the time. I like solitude, just keeping to myself sometimes.

What’s one thing people don’t know about this year’s UK football team?

A. I’m going to have to say, ‘Wait and see.’

A. The biggest rush is definitely a touchdown. You see

everybody in the stands going crazy and all my teammates run up to me.

Q. Would you like to see a playoff in college football? A. No, because I think that would take away from the regular season.
