President’s Report by John Eccles, CMSS President

Greetings to all you Milking Shorthorn friends on behalf of the CMSS Board of Directors. Another year has passed and we are well into the year 2022. Across the country things seem to be opening up and restrictions loosening. I pray that this year brings you all health, happiness and prosperity. As dairy breeders, we are well aware of the need to plan and invest in the future. Most of our breeding decisions take years to show results. Although some of us may grumble about this and that, we are all optimistic to some degree about the future. Why else would we take the time to select the sire that is just right, get the estrus cycle timing right, care daily for that cow, double check her when getting close up (although most of mine calve unassisted), take the extra time and patience to get that first colostrum in, stay out late with that rare sick calf to get it going again, raise it to breeding age and then start over again? We are always investing in the long term. In the past year the society has made great progress in investing in our breed’s future. Our Embryo Expansion Program had its first applicants and, as I write this, our second group of successful applicants are being selected. There has also been substantial progress in developing a genomic database with many samples going for analysis and some funding acquired to help out with the cost of this project. Thank you to all our members who work to promote and grow the breed. You have made an investment in a bright future for our beloved Canadian Milking Shorthorn. Together we can spread the news of how good it is to own the Red, White and Roan! CMSS Improver 2022

Secretary-Manager Report 2022 by Ryan Barrett

It’s been another long and challenging winter for most Canadians. Covid-19 reared its head again in late 2021, slowing down our economy and our social lives while making many of us ill. Thankfully, most provinces are progressing toward fewer restrictions as I write this with much lower levels of hospitalizations due to Covid. After two summers of virtual annual meetings, I’m very much looking forward to seeing many Milking Shorthorn breeders in person again at the Field Day this summer. The Field Day is always the highlight event of the year for the Society, and is a great opportunity to connect with fellow breeders, compare notes and make new friends. While social media and videoconferences have helped us remain connected over the past two years…they don’t make up for face-to-face conversations and seeing cows in the flesh! An area of recent progress for the Society has been on the subject of genomic testing and evaluations. Currently, our breed does not have the same access to genomic evaluations as the other Canadian dairy breeds, placing our breed and breeders at a disadvantage. At the root of this issue: the relatively small size (both domestically and internationally) of the Milking Shorthorn population, making it very difficult to build a reference population from proven sires along. Therefore, the Society has embarked on an ambitious project to genotype not only as many proven sires as possible but also a large number of cows to build reference population big enough to begin trial runs on genomic evaluations. 6

CMSS Improver 2022

To start this project, the Society was able to access a small amount of funding to genotype 125 head in Prince Edward Island from the PEI Department of Agriculture & Land. We were then able to leverage this investment, applying to Genomic Atlantic’s Small Scale Climate Change Fund for genomics. Thankfully, our application was successful, enabling us to genotype a further 100 head in Atlantic Canada as well as genotyping approximately 200 head of animals with either hair, blood, or semen samples stored in gene banks or at the Society office. These 200 head are from across the country and include both proven sires from yesteryear as well as hair samples from parentage verification. Just recently, we were also approved for some funding from Manitoba Agriculture to genotype Milking Shorthorns resident in that province. Therefore, we hope to have more than 500 Canadian animals genotyped by the early summer, a great start in our project! Thank you to the breeders who have already submitted hair or semen samples for testing. I am hoping that we’ll be able to access additional funding from other provinces in the near future to continue building this reference population. Another highlight of 2021 was launching the Society’s Embryo Expansion Program with approval of the first four applicants. One farm each from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec had successful applications and purchased high-quality Milking Shorthorn embryos at a subsidized rate, as well as becoming new CMSS members. We had more impressive applications for the 2022 intake, and we’re happy to approve three more herds for our program this year. I look forward to another year working with members across the country to help promote and improve our breed. I hope to see many of you in person soon, either at the Field Day this summer or visiting you on your farm. The future success of our Society will be built from our collective efforts!

CMSS Improver 2022

Brodie and Brenda Cupples to receive Distinguished Service Award

The Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society is pleased to recognize Brodie and Brenda Cupples of Errington, British Columbia with the Distinguished Service Award this year. Brodie and Brenda made significant efforts to re-establish the Milking Shorthorn breed in Western Canada as well as providing service to the Society over many years. In the late 1980’s, the Cupples’ moved from British Columbia to Thorsby, Alberta, where they acquired land at a more reasonable price and established a farm to grow their young family. Brenda grew up on a Holstein and Jersey farm on the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island while Brodie was the son of a medical doctor. Looking to add some colour to their Holstein herd, they began to acquire a few Milking Shorthorn heifers in the early 1990’s. Brenda 14

and Brodie supported the breed sales by purchasing the very finest quantity, including purchasing eight head (including the top seller) in the National Sale in 1992. Their purchases had to endure the cost and anxiety of transportation from Ontario to Alberta, which speaks to the Cupples’ dedication and support to the breed. Production and type was the objective, since a Milking Shorthorn cow in the Northend barn had to endure very strong competition with the very fine Holsteins members in the herd. Their ingenuity created an opportunity for the re-introduction of the breed into Western Canada after many decades. This was an era in which the breed was radically changing in type and production. Brenda and Brodie participated in this re-imagining of the breed and its place in the dairy industry. Brodie and Brenda promoted the breed in Western Canada where they could. They promoted the breed at the Western Dairy Expo in Leduc, the dairy capital of Alberta for many years during one of the most inconvenient times of the year, during haying season in June. They have provided breeding stock to new breeders in the Western Provinces, first from their farm in Alberta before moving to a new farm on Vancouver Island in 2013. Both Brodie and Brenda have served the breed on the Board of Directors and on a number of Society committees. Brodie became a director for the first time in 1995, serving until 2004. Brenda served as a director representing Western Canada from 2009 until 2020. Brodie and Brenda’s dedication to the breed and dairy industry made a noteworthy mark in Western Canada and makes them worthy recipients for this honour. The Society periodically awards the Distinguished Service Award to those that have made a significant contribution to the Milking Shorthorn breed in Canada. Potential nominees can include current or former breeders or past or present CMSS staff members. Considerations for eligibility include lifetime contributions to the breed, service to the Society as a director, committee member, sale or show volunteer, and promoter of the breed to the larger dairy industry. Recipients of this award also receive an honourary lifetime membership to the Society. The Cupples’ were nominated for this award by former Society Secretary James Knott. CMSS Improver 2022

CMSS Improver 2022

200 Years of the Coates Herdbook reprinted with permission from the UK Dairy Shorthorn Journal The inheritance of the Shorthorn Breed born today is from over 250 years of specialised development and 200 years of recorded ancestry – a unique claim in the world of cattle breeding. If, on a day in or around the year 1822, there had been seen coming over the ridge into Wharfdale, an old man on a white horse, it might have been George Coates from Charlton, near Pontefract, with his satchel full of calf records and bull pedigrees. More than likely he would have been making his way to Greenholme, near Otley, where lived one Jonas Whitaker, and where some fine Shorthorns had a home in the difficult and hard-up times that followed the Napoleonic wars. Since the turn of the century many Shorthorn breeders had been urging the obvious need for collecting and publishing pedigree records. At an annual gathering of breeders at the Wynyard home of Sir Henry Vane Tempest, Mr Coates was asked to undertake the work; a task he accepted and later pursued with boundless enthusiasm. Present at the auspicious meeting in 1812 were many well-known breeders, including the Colling brothers, Thomas Bates and John Booth. The death shortly afterwards of Sir Henry, who had generously offered to provide funds, delayed the work for ten years and the situation was further aggravated by the death, in 1820, of Robert Colling, who in conjunction with Jonas Whitaker, had agreed to advance funds following the revival of the project at the Brampton sale two years previously. On that occasion Col. Trotter, one of the four buyers of the famous 1,000gns Comet bull, was the prime mover in the matter. The undertaking meant many long journeys for George Coates; these were made on his white cob. It also meant long spells away from his own beasts. However, with the help of Thomas Bates, who also went about amongst breeders gathering particulars of pedigrees, sufficient material was collected to warrant the issue of a volume, and the work was eventually brought out in the Autumn of 1822 with funds supplied by Jonas Whitaker, without whose financial support there would never have appeared Volume 1 of the Shorthorn Herd Book. This was printed at the Wharfdale Stanhope Press, Otley, with drawings in stone of many of the noted cattle of the day. It was the first book of its kind, with the exception only of the General Stud Book of Thoroughbred Horses. Apart from the importance of his herd, Jonas Whitaker’s name will always be remembered

for the leading part he took in promoting and financing the early volumes of the Herd Book. In the first historic volume 721 bulls were listed, accompanied by nearly 1,000 cows and their produce. The distinction of being the first bull in the book went to Abelard who was born in 1812, bred by Major Bower, got by Mr C. Colling’s Cecil, d.(Easby), bred by Mr Booth by his lame bull g.d by Mr Booth’s old white bull, gr.g.d bought at Darlington. George Coates wrote in the preface of the first volume: The universally admitted want of a work of this sort, by breeders and owners of short-horned stock, is the best (and it is hoped a sufficient) apology for its publication. … The author’s present plan (if he continues to have health and to enjoy the kind patronage of his present numerous subscribers) is to replenish his work with additions, every three or four years. His son continued publishing further issues at intervals, recording births up to the year 1842 (Volume 5). After this volume the Herd Book was taken over by Henry Strafford, the famous livestock auctioneer, in whose office John Thornton worked as a clerk and where he won the opportunity of acquiring his intimate knowledge of Shorthorns, which helped him form his own well known auctioneering firm that took his name. In 1872 a meeting to consider the formation of a Shorthorn Society was called. At another meeting two years later the formation of a society was formally recommended, and the Duke of Devonshire was elected its first President. When the Shorthorn Society of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was incorporated in 1875, the copyright, including the stock in hand and manuscript of the Herd Book, was purchased from Mr Strafford for £5,000 and the Society published the Herd Book from volume 21 onwards. It is generally considered that the foundation of the pure bred Shorthorn dates from an eventful day in 1785 when Mr and Mrs Charles Colling, with Charles’ brother Robert, journeyed to Eryholm to visit their friends the Maynards, and John Maynard, after firmly refusing to part with the grand cow Old Favourite and her heifer calf Young Strawberry, was afterwards persuaded by his wife to sell both to Mrs Colling. The cow, later renamed Lady Maynard, was bred to Foljambe and produced the heifer Phoenix, the dam of the closely inbred bull Favourite, who sired the still more inbred bull Comet. This last-named sire secured a permanent place in the history of cattle breeding when he became the breed’s first 1,000gn bull following his joint purchase by four breeders, Col. Trotter and Messrs Charge, Wetherell and Wright, at Mr Colling’s retirement sale in 1810. Comet is recorded as living for eleven years, having been calved in 1804. Today the Shorthorn Society has in its possession one of this noted bull’s ribs, which of course can claim an even longer history than the original Herd Book! amongst the buyers at Charles Colling’s sale, each with a single purchase. Thomas Booth (father of John Booth of Killerby and Richard Booth of Warlaby) bought the bull Albion, whilst Thomas Bates bought the two year old heifer Duchess by Comet. Rivalry existed between Booth and Bates for many years, the general saying being Booth for flesh and Bates for milk. The original Thomas Booth was breeding Shorthorns at Killerby as far back as 1790 and noted Booth families included, among many others, the Moss Rose, Anna and Bracelet families, which became famous throughout English Showgrounds. Born in 1776, Thomas Bates managed his father’s estate at an early age, but not until 1830 did he move his herd to Kirklevington near Yarm, Northumberland. At the time, 50 of the females were daughters of the impressive sire Second Hubback, including representatives of the Duchess, Oxford, Waterloo, Red Rose, Wild Eyes and Foggathorpe families (cow families still found in the UK today). The most famous of the Bates families was Duchess, which he founded from the heifer he bought at Charles Colling’s sale for 183gns. Bates used bulls of the same family with these Duchess females, being convinced of the value of animals carrying the blood of Hubback, a bull that was later considered to be the origin of modern Shorthorn excellence. This bull was originally found by Robert Colling after he had noticed the quality of some of his calves, having been exposed for sale in the local markets. He purchased Hubback for a mere 8gns. Later, Charles bought Hubback from his brother and used him for two years. The very close system of inbreeding which Charles and Robert Colling employed has now become legendary in cattle breeding circles (and resulted in the production of Comet). It evolved from a visit they made in about 1783 to Robert Bakewell, who had discovered a way of fixing type by close inbreeding working with his Longhorn cattle. After studying his methods, the brothers applied Bakewell’s system, working with Teeswater or Durham cattle in their district of Darlington. To return to Bates – he practised inbreeding with his Duchess line quite as closely as the Collings had done with their cattle. It is to Bates that we primarily owe the development of the dual-purpose Dairy Shorthorn we know today. In his own time though, Bates’ reputation as a breeder was much enhanced by his sweeping success with his cattle at the first Royal Show, Oxford in 1839. Bates’ cattle were bought by many English noblemen and landowners, and overseas breeders in Canada and the USA. At the Kirklevington dispersal sale in 1850 – a year after

Bates’ death – buyers’ names included Messrs Morris and Becvar from New York, Amos Cruickshank, Jonas Webb and Earl Ducie (who secured the best of the Duchesses and Oxfords, which after his death three years later, were sold at Tortworth when they went to the United States of America at enhanced prices). Prices for Bates cattle soared throughout the next two decades, the climax being reached at Sam Campbell’s New York Mills sale in 1873 when English breeders, determined to bring home the best of the Duchesses, secured animals realising 6,000, 7,000 and 8,000gns. Fifteen Duchesses and Dukes averaged £3,679 and eight Oxfords £826. Due mainly to the influence of Richard Stratton and with the help of George Taylor and John Thornton, the Shorthorn Society, in 1905, instigated prizes at county shows for pedigree Shorthorn cows having milking characteristics, and in the same year the Dairy Shorthorn Association was formed, with Lord Rothchild as President and Fred Webb, agent at Babraham, as Secretary. The Dairy Shorthorn Association was probably the first in the country to begin a milk recording scheme, and the first to make milk yield qualifications a condition for showing. The Association was amalgamated with the Shorthorn Society in 1936. The Coates’s Herd Book had never been closed to new pedigrees and it has always been possible, by use of the registered pedigree bulls, to grade up and so build pedigrees which were acceptable, after four generations, for entry into the herd book. In 1918 it was stipulated that such pedigrees should be entered step by step in a grading register. Breed development over the years gave the Shorthorn two very distinct strains, emanating from the foundation work of Booth and Bates. At various times suggestions were voiced to divide Coates’ Herd Book into two sections, Beef and Dairy, although some breeders were anxious to divide such an illustrious ancient and common heritage, so it was agreed that this would not happen as long as the supporters of each type worked harmoniously together on a common council. However, by 1958 it was appreciated that breeders had clearly made two paths along which the Shorthorn types were to travel, and

CMSS Improver 2022

council decided that each branch of the Breed should have its own Herd Book. The division was made from Volume 106 onward. Coates’s Herd Book remains in two sections today. Meanwhile the Dairy Shorthorn herd book had opened its leaves to Northern Dairy Shorthorn entries and appendix registers. A polled register appeared, and Council ratified their acceptance of hybrid registrations in 1962. It authorised the setting up of an Experimental Register for the growing number of breeders wishing to use outside red bloodlines. Since the first Experimental Register was published with Volume 113, nearly 2,000 hybrid cattle have been registered. Coates’s Herd Book registrations reached an all-time high in 1949 when 25,781 cattle were registered in Volume 96. That same year the grading register reached its peak with 20,859 entries. Shorthorns were and are, to this day, still in high demand, demonstrating economic longevity and the ability to adapt and perform well in any system. The renowned good points of the breed – longevity, fertility and excellent legs and feet – have not diminished over the last two hundred years. The Shorthorn still values these traits inherited from their forefathers, which has allowed the breed to thrive, and prove that the Shorthorn is the breed that can maximise economic production conscientiously. To quote John Thornborrow, “the breed has an illustrious past and it can have a bright future”.

Oceanbrae Farms Awarded Second Master Breeder Award

The Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society is pleased to announce that Oceanbrae Farms of Belmont, Prince Edward Island has qualified for a second Master Breeder Award, based on points accumulated by animals bred by the Barrett Family between 2007 and 2019. Oceanbrae Farms attained their first Master Breeder Award in 2008. Oceanbrae Farms is a multi-generational farm on the shores of Malpeque Bay in Prince County, Prince Edward Island. The Barrett Family has been actively breeding Milking Shorthorns since 1950, and the farm will be celebrating its 100th anniversary next year. Fred Barrett and his wife Margaret shared their first Master Breeder award with his father Keith and step-mother Sylvia, the culmination of many years farming in partnership with his father. This year, Fred and Margaret celebrate their second Master Breeder recognition with their son Matthew and daughter-in-law Chandler, the fourth generation of Oceanbrae Farms. In addition, Fred and Margaret’s son Ryan is involved in the farm in a part-time capacity, assisting with field agronomy and 26

marketing of genetics. For many years, the Oceanbrae prefix has been well-known across Canada and internationally for expertise in Milking Shorthorn breeding. The Barrett’s have sold Milking Shorthorns to producers in every Canadian province as well as several US states over the years. In addition, Oceanbrae embryos have been exported to the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand, while five Oceanbrae-bred bulls have entered AI in the past fifteen years, including current #3 LPI sire Oceanbrae Royal Bentley. “Our goal is to breed highly productive cows with well-attached udders and sound feet and legs that will breed back quickly and survive in the herd for more than five lactations,” says Fred. “In the last ten years or so, we’ve put a lot of focus on improving fat and protein production in our herd. In that time, average fat percentage in our herd has risen by more than a full percent, which we feel has increased the profitability of our farm.” Oceanbrae Farms has been ranked as the #1 Lifetime Profit Index (LPI) herd in Canada for several years and has also been the top ranked herd in Canada for average BCA for many years, receiving the CMSS’s Clydagh Trophy. During the twelve-year window evaluated for this award, the Barrett’s bred 30 Excellent cows, 24 cows scored between VG-87 and VG-89, 96 Superior Production Awards, 32 Lifetime Production Awards, 20 BCA Class Leader Awards, and three proven sires in the current Top 20 LPI sire list. The Barrett’s currently milk approximately 68 cows in a modern free-stall barn built in 2019, including sand-bedding and automatic grain feeders. Milk cows are rotationally-grazed from late May to early October and supplemented with a total mixed ration (TMR). The rest of the year, cows are fed twice a day with a TMR consisting of highquality alfalfa silage and hay, corn silage, grain corn, barley, protein supplement, and a Belisle mineral supplement. Bred heifers are also extensively pastured. The farm also maintains a small cow-calf herd of purebred Simmental beef cattle and does a small amount of cash cropping of corn and barley. The Barrett’s maintain a passion for the Milking Shorthorn breed and are continuing to plan for the future by building on the success of the past. Congratulations to the Barrett family on their success! CMSS Improver 2022

Country Report: Australia by Michael Tuhan, Illawarra Cattle Society of Australia After two years of restrictions and uncertainty around organising events, some levels of normalcy have started to return here in Australia, with shows now back on the agenda. International Dairy Week (IDW) 2022 was one of the first major shows to return. With the cloud of Covid outbreaks still hovering, exhibit numbers were somewhat reduced, particularly from out of state with the risk of border closures still imminent. Despite this, the quality of animals on show was still at an absolute premium. Spectator numbers were noticeably low, but the beauty of modern technology meant that the Illawarra show livestream was viewed by a huge number of people from all over the world. The IDW Senior Champion Illawarra, Llandovery JR Joan 982, epitomises the longevity that the breed has become renowned for. A 7th lactation ten year old, Joan exhibits ideal productive and functional type. She also happens to be the dam of “Jazzy” standing at Genetics Australia, and now Gorbo Stormy Jon has entered collection for AgriGene. Being a SunSupreme son, Jon has created a great deal of excitement with both his dam and PGD classified EX95. Sales of Illawarra semen have been strong, boosted by the addition of an Illawarra bull to the ST Genetics team. Demand for sexed semen has been well above supply, with newer breeders especially utilising it as a tool to increase their Illawarra numbers as quickly as possible. Sexed Oceanbrae Foster was an option welcomed by many breeders. Currently in Australia, the Illawarra breed is evaluated within the “Red Breeds” data set, alongside Ayrshires and Aussie Reds (predominantly Scandinavian genetics). In the near future, we are looking forward to the Illawarra breeding values being expressed as a separate data set, which will make it easier to evaluate Illawarra sires relative to the actual breed average. It was pleasing to be involved in a constructive Zoom meeting initiated by Ryan Barrett involving representatives of Milking Shorthorn related breeds from around the globe. Collaboration is likely to be our best chance at achieving useful genomic information and continuing this dialogue amongst breed societies will give us the best CMSS Improver 2022

chance of success. Progress has been limited on the genomics front for Illawarras thus far, but time has enabled us to assess our options and hopefully navigate the best way forward. We now have plans in place to start genotyping select individuals, commencing with dams of bulls in A.I. and groups of daughters sired by proven bulls with high reliability. Our genetic evaluation centre Datagene has already started genotyping Illawarra bulls, with a plan of adding as many sires as they can source straws from to their data set.

Country Report: United States by Katie Agnew on behalf of the American Milking Shorthorn Society

Maple Fudge of 12 Oaks 3E95 2021 Grand Champion - International Show (World Dairy Expo) Two Milking Shorthorn clubs were established in the early 1900’s in the United States. On September 20,1920, the Milking Shorthorn Society was incorporated in Independence, Iowa “to promote Shorthorns of good milking quality.” Originally, stock in the American Shorthorn Association was held by three groups with differing philosophies 10% polled breeders, 40% Milking Shorthorns, and 50% traditional beef breeders. Over the course of the next 100 years, much has changed in the organization of the society and structure of the ideal Milking Shorthorn cow, but strong leadership and a dedicated membership with the goal of continuously improving the breed has been a constant theme. The 2021 AMSS National Convention in Jefferson, Wisconsin was the site of the 100th Annual Meeting of the American Milking Shorthorn Society. We had much to celebrate - from our long and storied past and all of those who came before us to coming together for fellowship and honoring the cows in the breed that excelled in their type, production, and genetic advancement of the breed. During the banquet at convention, several adult and junior members were honored for their dedication and impact on the breed. The Citizen of the Year was awarded to Greg and Marcia Clark (GMC Farm) 44

of Cornish Flat, NH. Michael Maier (Lazy M) from Stitzer, WI was presented with the Harry Clampitt Young Breeder Award. The AMSS National Sale was held in conjunction with the convention. A total of 39 live lots sold for an average of $2,280. Mikes-Dar Muddy Clarification VG88, a Halpins Muddy Rockstar daughter, was the top selling animal bringing $9,700. She was nominated All-American as a Jr. 2 Year Old in 2020. Our four national shows crowned a mix of cows sired by new and seasoned bulls. Gin-Val Princeton Leanna EXP VG88 (GMC-Innisfail Princeton 609-ET) was Grand Ghampion of the Northeast National. The Eastern National Grand Champion was Hard Core Rebel Rhapsody 2E94 (Pinehurst Rebel 9th). Winning Grand Champion honors at the International Show was Maple Fudge of 12 Oaks 3E95 (Rovin Snowht Lhill Snappy). Rounding out our national shows was the Grand Champion at the Winter National, Lazy M Wildside Genette EXP VG87 (Ourway Walk on the Wildside). While the number of herds in the United States continues to decline, our registrations, transfers, memberships, and number of cows classified stayed strong in 2021. The AMSS herdbook registered over 2,300 animals with nearly 1,000 transfers. We had just over 480 adult memberships and 780 junior memberships. 180 herds classified 1,060 animals. The AMSS also sold semen on over 50 breeder-owned bulls, selling 1900 units for a total of $43,000 in sales. The AMSS continues to grow and reach more breeders with the help of the forward-thinking of the board of directors. Currently, our database is being transferred over to the ABRI database system, to make registering cattle and accessing reports and data much easier for our breeders. Internationally, we continue to work with several countries to seek out genetic options that will improve the breed by importing and exporting semen and embryos. Sales across the country have brought new breeders and new juniors to the breed and an excitement to our breeders to consign their best to continue to grow the interest in Milking Shorthorns. Numbers exhibited at state and national shows also continue to increase, and people are really taking a good look and interest in the great strides we have made as a breed.

Country Report: United Kingdom Ros Rimmer, Secretary, Shorthorn Society of the UK & Ireland It is hard to believe that following the Covid pandemic we are now able to navigate our way through the tumultuous period that came along with the virus. The Dairy Industry in 2021 experienced rising input costs with both processors and farmers feeling the strain at the increased costs of fuel, energy, fertiliser, labour and transport, pressures that look set to increase throughout 2022. Whilst these circumstances have pushed milk prices up, milk prices are just covering costs. Despite this the advantages of the Shorthorn breed remain steadfast. Dairy Shorthorn herds are run on low input systems so we are not seeing the exodus from the industry that other high input breeds are. The Great Yorkshire Show was one of the very first shows to take place in July, hats off to the Show Committee for taking the risk of going ahead with the show which proved to be a great success. There was certainly a sense of uplift and excitement to be back socialising with like minded people. Congratulations go to the Collins family who won the Interbreed Crown with Churchroyd Bronte Wildeyes 51st. The National Shorthorn Show followed, held this time at Staffordshire County Show 2021 in August. Rob Kite won the National Championship with Cotonhall Tuck Moonlight who then went on to win the Interbreed heifer in milk title. In September, UK Dairy Day 2021 was a hive of activity for industry leaders, with the Shorthorn Championship won by Churchroyd Bronte Wildeyes 51st. The Society has remained present at all the major agricultural shows and continues to vigorously promote the breed to the best of our ability. We are extremely grateful to all the breeders for showing the breed off in ultimately the best shop window that is the show ring. Thankfully the livestock markets continued to trade during Covid, so a number of Shorthorn sales at Leek and Penrith were able to go ahead with much success. These sales are vital as they often attract new members into the breed. The Society has had a stable financial year but we continue to actively look for opportunities to increase registrations. Rising costs has seen the increase of registrations we saw in 2020 stabilise in 2021 and due to Brexit we are no longer able to accept Southern Irish registrations which has been a detrimental blow 46

CMSS Improver 2022

to the society. This being said, new UK members continue to steadily join and the increased sales of sexed semen will be followed up and hopefully filter through to more registrations. The SSUK committee chaired by Rob Kite continue to source successful bulls that produce cattle of high type and profitable components. Demand for sexed semen continues to grow and is the driving force behind current sales of SSUK. In the last 12 months a monumental amount of time has been spent organising the Shorthorn World Conference Tour which is due to start here on 7th July 2022. We are now in the final stages of pulling the bi-centenary celebration together in what will no doubt be a fantastic one off celebration of the breed. The tour highlights some of the top class herds across the UK and showcases the Dairy and Beef breeds in the best light. Highlights will include the magnificent Chatsworth House, Lumley Castle where the thought provoking conference will take place and the Great Yorkshire Show that will host two hundred Shorthorns across three days. We look forward to welcoming all international delegates who are joining us to celebrate the oldest Herd Book in the World. Youth Development has to be one of the main priorities of the Society, and we continue to encourage and support the future generations of farmers. In light of this, a youth element will be featured on the World Conference Tour offering an amazing opportunity to those who travel and learn more about the breed. The National Calf Show, is always a great weekend to showcase the young members who do the society proud with their enthusiasm and skills in and out of the show ring. More young members have been elected onto Council, which has proved very beneficial.

Nous investissons toujours à long terme.
