T

hen he was told, “Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by.” A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn’t to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn’t in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn’t in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper. When Elijah heard the quiet voice, he muffled his face with his great cloak, went to the mouth of the cave, and stood there. A quiet voice asked, “So Elijah, now tell me, what are you doing here?…” 1 Kings 19:12, 13 (The Message)

Poet John Ciardi had it right when he said, We are what we focus our attention on. Yes, we become what we give our attention to! Elijah’s attention was focused in the wrong places and upon the wrong people! Therefore, he was taken on a journey. Elijah had to experience something life changing… Elijah learnt that silence is always pregnant with the presence of God. Pay attention and in the silence you will hear God whisper… Remember, there are times in life when God does all the talking and we need to just keep quiet and listen. We must learn to be silent! The experience of silence imbues Elijah with a fresh, new perspective on God, life and himself. As God’s children we too need to experience the silence: Can you hear Him whispering?

God whispers

Abbot Macarius often told the brothers in

Scetis, “When communion in the church is over, you must flee, my brothers. Do you hear me? You must flee!” Sometimes one of the brothers would ask him, “But where else can one’s soul flee to, Abbot, especially after it has been resting with God during communion?” Whereupon Macarius would bring his finger to his lips and reply, “That is where I want you to flee to.” Then he would go to his room and before going in, turn to them and say, “If you haven’t yet heard God in the silence, you will never be able to hear or see Him anywhere else.” Then he would close his door and sit in the silence of his room. In the silence Macarius heard God whispering.

God whispers

‘God’s purpose in guidance is not to get us to perform the right actions. His purpose is to help us become the right kind of people.’ John Ortberg

Maybe we should pray like Mother Teresa: O Holy Spirit, help us adore Jesus in our hearts, who spent 30 years out of 33 in silence; who began His public life by spending 40 days in silence; who often retired alone to spend the night on a mountain in silence. Let us adore Jesus in silence. Amen
