GALWAY SPIRITS DISTILLERY Galway Spirits a Celebration of Life Galway Spirits is a craft distillery and tasting room in Temecula, CA. Our small-batch craft spirits reflect the incomparable beauty of our valley. For nearly 50 years, the majestic oaks, pristine vistas and lush paddocks of Galway Downs have been intrinsic to the story and spirit of Temecula Valley Wine Country. Steeped in history, this legendary equestrian and events center has provided the backdrop for countless weddings, celebrations and equine competitions.

distiller, Dale Peck, produces honest, innovative master blends of whiskey, bourbon, gin and specialty vodkas. Authentic, uncompromising and never rushed – each is timelessly classic and uniquely modern.

In 2010 Ken Smith decided to write the next chapter in Galway Downs’ storied history. A walk through the towering sycamore and oaks that accent the property inspired a vision that led him to found a craft distillery embodying the essence, beauty and grace of Galway Downs. True to the rich history and pioneering spirit of Galway Downs, Ken created Galway Spirits, a distinctive distillery now operating in Temecula, CA.

THREE PERFECT DAYS IN TEMECULA WINE COUNTRY

day 1

Check into your accommodations —choose from a winery resort, a centrallylocated Old Town hotel, the full-service Pechanga Resort Casino or an extended stay property like the brand new Home2 Suites by Hilton Temecula. Once you’ve settled into your home base, head to Old Town. If there are history buffs in your party, make the Temecula Valley Museum your first stop to gain a better understanding of the city’s past. Have a leisurely lunch at The Goat and Vine and then take a stroll along the boardwalks, browsing through the shops—don’t miss Temecula Valley Olive Oil Co. and Temecula Lavender Co. Capture photos of the historic landmark buildings, murals and Main Street Bridge. After checking out the quaint gift shops, antique centers, home décor and clothing

boutiques, kick back and relax over a tasting flight at Lorimar Loft. Get refreshed for a night out and then go to Vail Headquarters to hear live music under the stars and twinkling white lights. Enjoy a grazing style dinner with bites from the eateries in The Cookhouse food hall and drinks from The Daisy. If you’re up for a nightcap, book a reservation at Thompson & Twain Prospecting Co. to get access to the stylish, throwback speakeasy back in Old Town.

Rise and shine early for a hot air balloon flight (see page 61 for operators). Enjoy the bird’s eye view floating over the Temecula Valley as the sun’s golden rays wash over the vineyards. This is truly the best way to get the lay of the land before Continued on page 14

THREE PERFECT DAYS IN TEMECULA WINE COUNTRY a day of touring and tasting in wine country. And the photo opportunities are incredible with the patchwork of vineyards and winery estates below. Fuel up on a wholesome breakfast at E.A.T. Marketplace, where you can also pick up some provisions for wine country picnicking. Leave the driving to Stryder Transportation and customize your own private wine tour. Their fleet of vehicles can accommodate groups of all sizes and styles. Make Peltzer Farm & Winery your first stop and do a classic tasting inside the rustic chic Crush House—or book a 90-minute Behind the Vines tour that includes a walk through the vineyards and look inside their production facility. Next, go to neighboring Mount Palomar Winery established in 1969. Take in the sweeping views and taste in the valley’s oldest wine cave. After two tastings, you’ll be ready for a satisfying seasonal lunch at the Restaurant at Ponte Winery. Following lunch, carry on to Wiens Family Cellars, known for their “big reds.” If you have time (and tolerance!) for one more stop, wrap up your tasting tour at Doffo Winery, a multi-generational family business. Don’t miss their MottoDoffo Vintage Motorcycle Collection in the Barrel Room. A disco nap might be in order before you regroup to head out for a night on the town. If you’re feeling mellow, have a quiet dinner at Bluewater Grill. If you’re more energized, go dancing at Baily’s

Old Town Temecula and have a later dinner at 1909 Restaurant—they even have a menu dedicated to late night “brunchies” offered Friday and Saturday nights from 10:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. And if you feel like going big and trying your luck, hit Pechanga Resort Casino for dinner, a show and some gaming.

day 3

Devour a hearty breakfast at TOAST and then do something active. Play a round of golf (see page 70 for course options), take a hike or go on a guided horseback ride with Wine Country Trails by Horseback. If some pampering is calling, book treatments at Grapeseed Spa at South Coast Winery, Murrieta Day Spa or Spa Pechanga. Dedicate your afternoon to getting to know Temecula’s flourishing craft beer scene. Do a self-led ale trail of Wiens Brewing, Refuge Brewery and Garage Brewing. Or take a guided Brew Tour with Van’N Boozy, which includes tastings at three breweries and doorto-door transportation in their classic VW Buses. Savor the elevated comfort food at Devilicious for your “last supper.” Take a glimpse into the past and visit their speakeasy, Apparition Room, featuring premium libations.

ENHANCING LIVES ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME It started with a simple idea: “let’s make it a family project.” The year was 1996 and Rosie and Gerry Wilson had just retired from their careers as cooking show host and financial planner respectively when one of their grown children suggested going into the wine business. After much discussion, and research, the Wilsons, along with three of their children with emerging families of their own, planted their dreams of a winery in the fertile soil of the Temecula Valley Wine Country. Today, the roots of the Wilson Family dream are alive and well in a wine-centered environment like no other in the Temecula Valley. The Wilson’s family project is now one of the most popular wine destinations in Southern California with more than 2,000 people visiting every week and more than 100,000+ cases of wine sold around the country each year. At the heart of this effort is the attention to family and hospitality. There is rarely a moment when a Wilson Family member is not on the property and Matriarch Rosie Wilson is often seen walking one of the family Golden Retrievers through the grounds greeting people and talking with guests. From the beginning, Wilson Creek has focused on developing wines that “communicate” with people. From its breakout Almond Sparkling Wine, and its ever-growing family of effervescent delights, to bold new age varietals, Wilson Creek wines continue to break new ground in vinicultural circles. Wilson Creek wines have won prestigious awards every year since 2002 including many rated 90+ by Wine Enthusiast. In a blind tasting for the

“People’s Choice Awards”, Wilson Creek’s Petite Sirah was deemed “Best Red Wine in the Temecula Valley.” The variety of wines at Wilson Creek is pared with a healthy dose of hospitality. As a destination winery, Wilson Creek is ideal for weddings, corporate and special events, and family celebrations. In addition to the daily events and tasting activities, the winery offers a full-service restaurant with an expansive patio, creekside picnic area, exclusive accommodations, and private labeled wines. The simple pleasure of enjoying wine goes to the heart of the mission at Wilson Creek with a goal to provide an atmosphere that creates a fun experience through connecting with people while enjoying a wide selection of wine. The Wilson family has built an extended-family community around the sharing of wine, food and hospitality, turning visitors into friends and wine lovers into ambassadors for the brand. www.WilsonCreekWinery.com

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES Hands-on with Cuisine, Wine & Art

Temecula is one big learning lab if you know where to look. You can get your hands “dirty” being educated on the art and science of all things food, wine and whiskey thanks to local experts who have a passion for sharing their craft. There’s also pottery and line dancing classes. Whatever your interest, you’ll bring a new skill home with you when you sign up for one of these experiences. Get a primer on all things wine during the monthly 2.5-hour Wine Appreciation class held on the third Saturday of the month at Falkner Winery. The winemaker leading the class covers everything from grape growing and food pairings to the “howto’s” of wine tasting, integrating all of the senses. Book the Wine Blending Lab Experience at Bottaia Winery to try your hand at winemaking. The intimate classes are held in the winery’s fermentation lab. Galway Spirits’ Distillers Workshop Experience is led by Master Distiller Dale Peck, who guides students through the distilling process. You’ll make your own bottle of spirits as a takeaway and classes also include a tasting flight and lunch. Kitchen Fantasy is a local kitchen supply store that regularly hosts thematic cooking classes. The Williams-Sonoma retail store in Promenade Temecula also presents a full slate of classes. Celine’s Cuisine offers both public and private cooking and baking classes catering to kids and adults alike.

TAKING TEMECULA TO NEW WINE MAKING HEIGHTS The vineyards - Sustainable. Balanced. Pristine. Our vineyards are sustainably managed. We study the land, and work closely with it. We watch the climate, and respond carefully to it. We have chosen a natural approach to farming and to create wines that are naturally expressive. You’ll notice we’re drawn mostly to working with the age-old grape varieties of Spain, Portugal and southern France (although their lineage actually goes much farther back, into mankind’s earliest days). That is because these varieties naturally express themselves in our region with amazing power, elegance and grace. The winery - Beautiful. Tranquil. Serene. Our stunning hilltop location keeps Miramonte – literally and figuratively --- perched majestically above the fray of everyday life. Enjoy it as often as you can! Whether in person, online, or at any of our off site get-togethers, we look forward to seeing and sharing a glass with you. The weekend - The Original. Lively. Energetic. We established regular weekend entertainment in Temecula wine country back in 2001. Since then, it’s emerged as a big part of our legacy. Weekly entertainment at Miramonte is a chance for us all to unwind, cut loose, and reconnect with family and friends in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.

The wines - Elegant. Trendsetting. Harmonious. We love great wine. Our goal is excellence in every glass. Our house style is one of elegance, concentration, depth of character and what we call “approachable intensity” inherently deep flavors and aromas, with elegant nuances derived from premium oak aging and gentle winemaking. The winemaker - Seasoned. Soulful. Innovative. Our winemaker is UC Davis-educated Reinhard Schlassa who brings a pedigree winemaking background to Miramonte. He’s made wines with icons of the industry on three continents over a span of three decades. His amazing experience and creative talent guide our every winemaking decision. The bistro - Rich. Delicious. Cali Casual. We launched the Bistro in 2015, and we pretty much never looked back. Several industry awards later, we’ve emerged as a benchmark in local Cali-casual cuisine. All our dishes are scratch-made on the daily by an amazing team dedicated to discovering a variety of rich flavors that reflect Southern California’s cultural diversity. We source local and organic whenever we can. Miramonte has gracefully emerged as one of Southern California’s most beautiful, dynamic, and forward thinking wineries. Ours is a mission driven by passion. By design, we are a leading influence in the Southern California wine scene, taking Temecula to new winemaking heights. We invite you to connect with us and join our remarkable journey… www.miramontewinery.com

SOMERSET: REDEFINING A WINE COUNTRY EXPERIENCE Forget what you’ve ever heard about visiting a winery. A visit to Somerset Vineyard redefines what a wine country experience can be. We are consistently the highest rated Temecula Valley winery on Yelp. And we get our rave reviews because our visitors have so much darn fun when they come here. A passion for life is rooted in our culture and DNA. It starts with great wine. Somerset is continuing a 30-year tradition of delivering exceptional hand-crafted wines out of its 13-acre vineyard. We specialize in producing sustainably-farmed varieties from Southern France and select regions of Spain. Our hands-on ownership team wants visitors to enjoy our wine in a friendly, irreverent atmosphere. Your unforgettable visit may include one of our famous behindthe-scenes tours – planned or impromptu – where you might find yourself playing our version of Family Feud or learning about our slogan “No Bullshoot.”

We host special events just about every week, with live music Friday, Saturday and Monday nights. Last year alone, we hosted a ‘70s disco party, doggy costume parade, viticulture and sommelier classes, and a grape stomp, just to name a few. And if you’re real lucky, you might just hear the story of the drunk bunnies. Our elegant, comfortable Tasting Room has an oversized, stone fireplace. Our garden-like grounds features beautiful white roses, surrounded by acres of mature grape vines and 50 olive trees (we bottle our own olive oil). In spring and summer, we host free outdoor concerts. Somerset is the first winery in the valley to embrace our Spanish tradition and offer over 42 different Sangria recipes – a perfect complement to a warm, sunny day. Visit us on Yelp to book one of our “Behind the Scenes” tours at a discount. Somerset Vineyard & Winery is a destination for anyone who appreciates the joy of friendship, the thrill of life, and the taste of fun. www.SomersetVineyard.com

The tasting room is a unique experience in the Temecula Wine Country, with our beautifully appointed private tasting room with a superb collection of award winning wines. While you are able to indulge in both still and sparkling wines at our winery resort, sparkling wine is the style wine that is produced at the Carter Estate wine production facilities. While Champagne can only be made in the Champagne region of France, from grapes only grown there, Méthode Champenoise may be used on bottle fermented sparkling wines made anywhere outside of the Champagne region. Here at Carter Estate Winery & Resort, we are one of the valley’s only sparkling wines producers in the Méthode Champenoise. Enjoy a seated tour through our tasting menu from sparkling to dessert, along with olive oils from olives grown right outside the tasting room doors and produced locally here in Temecula. ENJOY THE VINTAGE & INDUSTRIAL FEEL OF 1909 Whether you are in Temecula for a vacation, visiting friends, or work, look no further than 1909, a unique restaurant and gastropub located in the heart of Old Town Temecula. As you drive through Old Town, one of the things that draws you to this restaurant is the large patio seating area that is always filled with people, tons of laughter and good times. After reading and hearing about all of the amazing reviews 1909 has from locals and out-oftowners, this restaurant is one to experience for yourself! 1909 is a tribute to the Machado building, the location where the restaurant and bar now lives. Well before the 1909 burger was created, the structure was home to a trading post, livery, auto shop and most notably a bar. During the 70’s, the Longbranch Saloon was known as the roughest place in town to get a drink. Locals often stop in and tell stories of brawls and shootings. In fact, several bullet holes are still in the ceiling. It is no wonder that 1909 continues to draw the crowds. With handcrafted scratch-made food and cocktails, 1909 delivers a unique experience for everyone! The Cedar

Smoked Old Fashioned is a crowd favorite and a show in itself. Don’t want to order off of the cocktail menu? Their mixologists can create one-of-a-kind cocktails based off of your palette. It is truly an amazing experience. Pair that with craft food dishes and you are set! Adding to the many offerings that 1909 has is the brunch menu offered 7 days a week, complete with bottomless mimosas and a tableside bloodymary cart. For those who want to try something more unique, order the Carnivore bloodymary complete with chicken wings, bacon and a meat straw. Yes, a meat straw! Dine with your kids during the day, or come in for a fun evening and late night menu offerings. And if you happen to have your four-legged children with you, 1909 even has a dog menu that dogs can enjoy. Check out the website for up-and-coming events being offered, special days like “Tiki Tuesdays” complete with a tiki food & cocktail menu or to book your next party. All around, you are guaranteed to find something for everyone at 1909 and your party won’t leave disappointed! www.1909Temecula.com

HOME GROWN GEMS Discover hidden secrets from farms to flowers Temecula Valley’s agricultural roots run deep. The community’s inhabitants have lived off of its abundant, fertile lands from the earliest days of the Pechanga band of Luiseño Native American Indians to the Spanish padres during the Mission Era, the Mexican rancheros of the 1800s and the first wine growers to plant vines in the 1960s. You can explore this earthier side of Temecula and see what the growers of today are cultivating by visiting local farms, ranches and animalcentric attractions open to the public. Temecula Lavender Co.’s locally grown lavender is used in their divinely aromatic natural product line. Visit their shop in Old Town to sample and smell the artisanal, small batch range of soaps, lotions, culinary lavender and much more—you’ll reap the benefits of aromatherapy the moment you set foot inside the store. Tours of their ranch are available by appointment too. Established in 1991 by the Temecula Valley Rose Society, Rose Haven Heritage Garden is open daily from sunrise to sunset. During April and May, more than 1,600 roses burst into fragrant bloom for the spring season—a second bloom 34 V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

takes place in fall. They host workshops January through April to let the public get hands on with pruning, fertilizing and other gardening education. Learn about the benefits of sustainable alpaca farming and the animals’ luxurious fibers at non-profit Temecula Valley Alpacas, which offers tours by appointment only. Temecula Valley Alpacas also provides sponsorships, boarding and breeding. A small petting zoo with a gourmet chocolate shop, the charming Sugar Plum Farm of Temecula is open to the public daily. Stop by to meet and feed the eclectic menagerie of friendly creatures, including a camel, zebra, water buffalo, pig, goats, llamas and dwarf horse. Self-guided tours end on a sweet note with a chocolate truffle sample. Horse lovers will want to see the spectacular 240-acre Galway Downs equestrian center, the region’s premier venue for racehorse training, international horse trials and shows and many more spectator events and festivals. If you want to get out and ride, visit the 50-acre Green Acres Ranch for a trail ride, or participate in one of the seasonal horse camps.

VAIL HEADQUARTERS History Revitalized Although Old Town is the historic heart of Temecula Valley, the newly restored Vail Headquarters on Temecula Parkway gives history buffs another place to soak in our stagecoach-era heritage. Originally a trading post established by Louis and Ramona Wolf (Ramona was the Chugach heroine of the eponymous novel written in 1884 by Helen Hunt Jackson), the site would later become the headquarters of one of California’s largest cattle operations owned by Walter Vail. The Vail Ranch was sold to developers in the 1960s. More than 40 years later, in 2016, Vail Headquarters reopened, thanks to the efforts of an active group of citizens who worked to restore and preserve many of the original buildings as a vital part of Temecula’s history. It now houses charming shops and cafes, a Tuesday morning farmers market, and an unmistakable air of days gone by. 36 V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

HISTORY The Pechanga band of Luiseño Native American Indians were our first residents. They ran their hands through the soil, met under the Great Oak and stood atop the rolling hills overlooking the valley, naming it Temecula, or “sunshine through the mist.” Gateway arches at the northern and southern entrances to this downtown district commemorate our past. In 1859, in the era of the Butterfield Stage, the first U.S. post office was established here, marking Temecula’s permanence and importance. Thus, the year 1859 is boldly emblazoned on each arch. Two decades later, in 1882, the Temecula town site was established with the arrival of the railroad, with a station in Old Town, midway between Riverside and San Diego. Then, in the early 1900s, new roads reached the valley and helped to open up Temecula to the outside world. The Inland Highway (the first, paved, two-lane, county road and ancestor of Highway 395) was built through Temecula Valley in 1915. Until 1949, it ran down Old Town Front Street where restaurants, gas stations, and motels served those travelling through the Temecula Valley.

Meanwhile, from the 1800s until the 1960s, farmers and ranchers blanketed the valley with cattle and crops. In 1905, cattle baron Walter Vail began buying vast acreage here. By 1947, the Vail Ranch included more than 87,000 acres. In 1964, the Vails announced the sale of their ranch to a consortium of developers that had plans for a master-planned community to be known as Rancho California. When the City of Temecula was incorporated in 1989, residents voted to retain the original Native American name of the village and railroad town site. Today, more than a dozen historical properties dating as far back as the late 1880s still exist and have been repurposed and reopened in Old Town. Yet the area continually improves and re-imagines itself in new, contemporary ways. Mixed in with the historical facades, recently built structures reflect different architectural styles, lending an authentic and thoroughly individual spirit cultivated here for more than 150 years. Although Temecula now boasts a population close to 113,000 and over 3 million visitors each year, our heritage is not forgotten.

A TEMECULA HISTORY TIMELINE 1859 The first post office is established here, marking Temecula’s permanence and importance.

1915 The first paved two-lane road—Inland Highway—is built through Temecula Valley, running through Old Town.

1867 Louis and Ramona Wolf establish a trading post by Temecula Creek. After their deaths, the land was purchased by Walter Vail. By 1905 the site would grow to include more than 87,000 acres—one of California’s largest cattle operations.

1882 The Temecula town site is established with the arrival of the railroad. The station was built in what is now Old Town.

1964 Vail Ranch is sold to a consortium of developers who create a community called Rancho California.

1989 The city is incorporated and residents vote to retain the name of the original Native American village and railroad town site.

breweries FARM TO TAP Sustainable ethos, community focus and award-winning brews represent what Temecula’s thriving craft beer scene is all about Social connection is what ultimately inspired Refuge Brewery’s co-founder and president Curt Kucera to turn his home brewing hobby into a vocation. A mechanical engineer by trade, he deeply enjoyed the communal aspect of sharing the fruits of his hobbyist labors with friends and neighbors who would gather in his garage to try the latest batch. After decades of this informal ritual, Curt decided it was time to create a sanctuary where greater numbers could congregate and experience that same sense of “getting away from it all”—while socializing over quality brews. Given his passion for Belgian-style beers, the name Refuge is a tribute to the monks who sought refuge in Belgium during the French Revolution.

When Refuge opened in 2012, there was only one mature brewery in Temecula. Today, there are more than a dozen diverse breweries, several meaderies, and distilleries in town. Refuge, a standout in growth has become one of the largest breweries in Inland Empire by production volume. Naturally, beer is the true star of the show at Refuge. At any given time, there are 18 beers on rotation for tasting. Every week, there’s something new and different to sample—usually seasonally inspired. While Belgian-style beers remain their specialty, Refuge also crafts hazy IPAs, classic IPAs, lagers, pale ales and stouts. Blood Orange Wit, a Belgian-style white ale, is their award-winning flagship beer. In 2017, it earned the coveted gold Continued on page 44

FARM TO TAP medal at the Great American Beer Festival in the Belgian Style Fruit Beer category. Well before that prestigious endorsement, demand for the Blood Orange Wit grew rapidly. Blood oranges have a very limited growing season, so they had to get creative about sourcing the volume of fruit needed to produce the beer—200 pounds go into every batch. They discovered a third-generation citrus farmer in Hemet who had a large blood orange grove on its last legs. It was revitalized and now they buy up to 40,000 pounds from that farmer every year. In addition to supporting local farms, the brewery makes a concerted effort to reduce waste and contribute to sustaining the community. Instead of sending their spent grains to landfill, Refuge donates it to local farmers who use it to supplement livestock feed. Wilson Creek Winery has experimented with spent grain in a mulching process for their vineyards because the high nitrogen content is good for the soil. Karl Strauss Brewing Company optimizes the use of water and energy to reduce their carbon footprint wherever they can, too! Along with many breweries, Karl Strauss provides all of their spent grain to local farmers to use as feed for livestock free of charge; they use sustainable, recyclable packaging for all of

44 V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

their beers; and they use environmentally friendly to-go containers and menus in their brewpubs. Even their menus are printed on 100% recycled paper! The relationship with local wineries is symbiotic. Many local breweries experiment with making beer in wine barrels, which is uncommon in the beer world. As Curt says, “It’s an outgrowth of us living here, being part of wine country and embracing what this valley can deliver to people.” Cheers to that! For a city of its size, Temecula is home to a big concentration of craft breweries turning out distinctive and award-winning beers. The growing craft beer movement is such a significant part of the community and is celebrated every May with Temecula Valley Craft Beer Month. The calendar is packed with special events and festivals and the breweries offer special deals and pours. You might be lucky enough to meet the brewmasters themselves. Whether you’re a beer aficionado doing some “research,” refreshing your palate after a couple days of wine tasting or simply looking for a cool spot to grab a drink and bite, the Temecula Valley Ale Trail overflows with delicious possibilities. While in Old Town, stop by Ironfire Brewing where their ales and lagers have their own unique

IN THE SPIRIT Local distilleries and speakeasies elevate the art of the cocktail In addition to being a destination for wine and beer, Temecula’s makers movement extends to spirits and mixology. Two familyrun distilleries each produce a full range of handcrafted artisan spirits and both are open to the public for tours and tastings. Add to the mix a pair of Old Town speakeasies that shake and stir up impeccable cocktails, and you’ve got a solid gold musthit list for cocktail connoisseurs and spirits appreciators. Owned by Ken Smith, the family behind the Galway Downs equestrian center, Galway Spirits Distillery (galwayspirits.com) specializes in whiskey, bourbon, gin and specialty vodkas made with locally sourced grapes. The production facility is on full display in the expansive tasting room that embodies the rustic elegance of Temecula’s countryside. Tours and tastings feature sips of the individual spirits, and you can also drop in to try creative cocktails utilizing fresh herbs and citrus. Open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays, Galway Spirits also hosts a regular line-up of special events and concerts. Check their online calendar to see what’s happening when you’re in town. Old Town’s two speakeasies share a dark, moody, modern vintage vibe, yet each have their own unique character and distinctive cocktail menu. The Apparition Room (apparitionroom.com) is hidden inside Devilicious Eatery & Tap Room. Thompson & Twain Prospecting Co. (thompsonandtwain.com) is accessed through a discreet curtain in Crush & Brew. You must have a reservation here too—bookings available via the speakeasy’s website.

UP, UP & AWAY Take flight on a hot air balloon Hot air ballooning is a quintessential, all-season Temecula experience—and photo op. Nearly every morning, a flock of brightly hued balloons can be spotted floating above the vineyards. It’s a sight to behold from the ground, and the view is even better from the sky. Three trusted outfitters can get you up there: A Grape Escape Balloon Adventure (hotairtours. com), California Dreamin’ Balloon Adventures (californiadreamin.com) and Magical Adventure Balloon Rides

(hotairfun.com). All offer public group flights and private flights can also be booked. Please don’t let a fear of heights prevent you from this serene, bucketlist-worthy activity! The pilots and their crews are highly-skilled with impeccable safety records. Plus, flights never take off when conditions are unsafe. The sunrise flights typically last an hour and reach heights of up to 3,000 feet. Motion sickness won’t be an issue either—it’s a very smooth ride. Continued on page 60

IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO VAIL LAKE IN THE PAST YEAR, YOU’LL BE AWESTRUCK BY THE IMPROVEMENTS! The Vail Lake/Temecula KOA campground is an escape to nature with wide-open spaces on a rolling 185-acres covered in the shade of mature oak trees. And now everyone can enjoy the sweeping vistas in new glamping-style accommodations with bathrooms coming later in 2020-a great way to experience Temecula Valley Wine Country. New, high-speed wifi means you can now extend your stay and get access to your favorite online content. Traditional campers will love the onsite improvements and conveniences such as 35,000 sqft of newly paved entrance roads. World-class mountain biking trails and equestrian trails are open to campground guests and the public. Annual passes range from $89 - $150. The onsite café in Vail Village serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seasonally. And special event weekends with entrainment and kids activities are offered throughout the year. Now taking instant, online reservations for your convenience. www.TemeculaVailLakeKOA.com

UP, UP & AWAY

Here’s how the experience unfolds… • You’ll receive a confirmation call the day before your booking with instructions on where to check in for your flight, what to wear and bring. If the flight is cancelled due to weather, you will be notified in advance of the check-in time. • Day of, wear comfortable, flat shoes and dress casually in layers with a jacket for cooler mornings (shorts and open-toed shoes are not allowed). Keep large bags locked in your car and be sure to bring sunglasses and your camera or mobile device for photography.

• It takes the pilot and crew about 15 minutes to inflate and heat the balloon. Then you’ll be instructed to climb into the sturdy basket using the footholds, which requires a bit of agility at 48 inches high. • The balloon will slowly rise and you’ll gain elevation, which will change throughout the flight. Now, it’s time to enjoy the ride and get snap happy capturing the views! The pilot will point out local landmarks and provide insights along the way.

In Temecula Valley, hot air balloons only rise in the early mornings, we recommended to stay the night. • When you arrive at the designated winery location, you’ll be asked to sign a mandatory liability waiver and then get assigned to a pilot. Once all passengers are checked in, a briefing is delivered to the group before boarding vans or mini-coaches to relocate to the nearby field where the balloon will launch.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN WINE COUNTRY’S GREATEST EXPERIENCES You can experience it all in one glorious weekend at the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival, May 29-31, 2020. Check off a bucket list item with a dawn hot air balloon flight* or tethered ride and a birds’ eye view of the surrounding 14,000-acre multi-species reserve. Spend the afternoon sipping from a selection of more than 50 fine wines and an international food fair. Held at Lake Skinner Recreation Area, each day is capped with top bands in concert. Friday and Saturday evenings include Hot Air Balloon Glows.* For information visit tvbwf.com or call (951) 676-6713. *Weather permitting. www.tvbwf.com

• When it’s time to land, the pilot will communicate with the crew on the ground who meet you at the predicted landing location, which is influenced by the way the wind is blowing. • Once on the ground, it takes the crew about 15 minutes to deflate and pack up the balloon. You’ll hop back in the vehicle and be driven back to your starting point at the winery. • Post-flight celebrations may ensue, such as a sparkling wine toast. You might even witness a surprise marriage proposal!

TEE TIME

Pro golfer Rickie Fowler, hometown hero Rickie Fowler is a Temecula Valley hometown hero who has been playing on the PGA Tour for a decade. The 31year old golfer was born and raised in Murrieta. He developed his game at the Murrieta Valley Golf Range where he started playing with his grandfather as a little boy. There, he caught the attention of the late Barry Lee McDonnell who

Of this region, Rickie says, “I’ll never forget where it all began and the place that helped me get there.” coached him from age seven onward. He led his high school team to the state championships before going on to play at the collegiate level. After turning pro, Rickie was named the PGA Rookie of the Year in 2010. Of this region, Rickie says, “I’ll never forget where it all began and the place that helped me get there.” There’s no need to restrict yourself to the driving range if you want to work on your golf game here in Temecula. Play a round at CrossCreek Golf Club designed by the legendary Arthur Hills and enjoy the panoramic valley views and picturesque oak and sycamore groves. Also designed by Hills, Journey at Pechanga Resort Casino was named “One of the Best Courses You Can Play” by Golfweek. Temecula Creek Inn is another golf-friendly resort with three nine-hole courses on property. The Legends Golf Club at Temeku Hills is an accessible 18-hole course designed by Ted Robinson and updated by P. Dye. And Redhawk Golf Club is a laid-back 18-hole public course renowned for its island green.

GOLF, EAT, SLEEP IN SERENITY. Get ready for a Journey like you’ve never experienced. Journey at Pechanga, the resort’s 18hole championship course, beckons beginners and experts alike. The Arthur Hills and Steve Forrestdesigned par 72 starts players out with straightahead shots at the fairway and greens, but at hole five, throws in a dogleg with one of two signature lakes and a stream to traverse. Traveling up to hole six, golfers get a look at the entire Temecula Valley from a 350-foot higher elevation. The tee shot to the fairway sails down more than 200 feet below, if the brush doesn’t swallow the ball first. The lush landscape and natural terrain abound at Journey at Pechanga. Also in abundance is the outstanding customer service and amenities afforded to each and every guest whether they’re hitting the lush greens or relaxing inside the 67,000 square foot clubhouse. The Journey’s End restaurant offers the chance for golfers to recount their strokes, conquered challenges of the course and plan their next tee times. No matter if you’re an avid golf enthusiast or are just starting out, you won’t want to miss a course Golfweek named as One of the Best Courses You Can Play. CROSSCREEK GOLF CLUB The stunning beauty of the Temecula Valley and the legendary design work of Arthur Hills have come together at CrossCreek Golf Club. The result is a pristine Southern California course where great golf is played in a secluded natural environment. Groves of age-old oak and sycamore trees and rippling creeks provide intriguing scenery, which meshes with Hills’ challenging layout to create a haven for exceptional golf. The natural hazards demand careful shot-making. The course features firm, hard to hold fairways, rough-edged bunkers that are difficult to escape, and firm, fast greens that slope away for tricky putts. The par 71 layout runs 6,853 yards from the championship tees, combining length with the array of natural hazards. There are three shorter tee positions that make the course accessible to all levels of player. CrossCreek is open for daily play at affordable rates and offers attractive membership packages for singles and families. They also offer Senior Card programs with outstanding benefits and discounts for seniors over 60.

As well, CrossCreek Golf Club offers a great venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions. With one-of-a-kind photography locations and a fully trained event staff, CrossCreek ensure brides and grooms enjoy a wedding day filled with everything they dreamed of. The golf course creates a classy and serene setting that will be unforgettable for them as well as their guests. Designed to be the ultimate in casually elegant weddings, CrossCreek can accommodate both intimate and large outdoor weddings and receptions at the most reasonable of prices. CrossCreek’s own online tee-time booking engine makes securing tee times fast and easy. By going through the course’s website, www.crosscreekgolfclub.com, they offer golfers the lowest rate anywhere with no processing fees. Conveniently located only 5 minutes from I-15, there are no homes, no freeways and no noise to disrupt the serenity of your play. CrossCreek Golf Club is truly one of the finest public layouts in Southern California and a joy to play. www.crosscreekgolfclub.com

This course is a popular choice for golf outings, providing large and small groups with all the amenities they need. CrossCreek provides groups with a world class golf experience and an attitude of service to back it up. Whether it be a civic event for 100-plus golfers or a small group outing for friends, they provide the finest course and facilities for their clientele. Their large facility includes a 300-yard driving range and putting green, a golf shop with a full range of equipment and golf gear and a spacious clubhouse with the CrossCreek Grille, where groups can enjoy a delicious post-golf game meal.
