Section is the marquee feature of Manhattan Beach. It’s home to the downtown district filled with chic boutiques and local restaurants, such as MB staples like the Manhattan Beach Creamery and The Strand House. It includes the MB Pier ending in the iconic Roundhouse Aquarium. With its unrivaled ocean views, beach access, and proximity to all the local boutiques and restaurants, the Sand Section is the best Manhattan Beach has to offer. It’s also the oldest part of town, home to the original settlement in the late 1800s when the unincorporated village was known as Potencia - Spanish for “power”. Residential neighborhoods quickly filled the sandy slope approaching the ocean along the 2.1-mile oceanfront. Those homes are now arguably the most sought-after places to live in all 88 cities of LA County; a study released by Property Shark late 2017 showed Manhattan Beach has the highest median price per square foot in the county at $943. Malibu is second at $933, and Beverly Hills is third at $839. The small Sand Section lots, usually 30 x 90 ft., are rarely for sale and quickly go when they do hit the market. Even within the small framework of the Sand Section, there are also subsections with their own spirit. West of Highland vs. East of it; Walk streets, The Strand, and North Manhattan, or as locals still refer to it as: El Porto. The debate is so strong, that as I talked to residents and realtors, voices raised a bit and opinions abounded. El Porto is what longtime residents know as a surfer’s paradise North of Rosecrans along Highland running down to the water. Realtors and business owners in the area have attempted a rebranding as “North MB” to avoid mistaking Manhattan City limits for a separate municipality. Whatever it is, I never found out. MB
