specialties. Across the street, Allen ISD inspires up-andcoming scientists, engineers, artists and mathematicians at the beautiful Allen ISD STEAM Center. Even during the uncertainty caused by COVID-19, Allen students reaped the benefits of savvy educators and supportive administrators who had the resources to pivot—and did. Whether gathered in a cutting-edge classroom or around a kitchen table, we’re thrilled to see the development of our city’s future workforce. elcome to the town of Fairview! We are a town of everything from horse farms to upscale neighborhoods with beautiful homes on acreage; luxury apartments to a variety of shopping and dining opportunities. Fairview also has Heritage Ranch—a vibrant retirement community with a great golf course located adjacent to the 289-acre Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Area. Fairview takes pride in maintaining the country feel of much of our town—but with access to great shopping, dining and entertainment just a few minutes away. We have tree lined creeks and trails and rolling hills throughout much of town. We have a tree preservation ordinance; open space requirements; and Fairview is one of the very few towns or cities in Texas that has a “dark skies” lighting ordinance. On most clear nights you can actually see stars in the Fairview night sky. Fairview children are served by two outstanding public school districts—the Lovejoy ISD and the McKinney ISD. With a long list of accolades for being great places to live and raise a family, it is no wonder that young professionals are choosing the area as the place to launch the next chapter of their lives. In some cities it can be a struggle for a young professional to break through the perimeter of a business community, but the Allen-Fairview Chamber makes it easy by inviting members to join the Young Professionals Group, and find their place. Allen is actively working to be the place where Millennials want to live, work, and play and is focused on building economic opportunities within its borders. As a result, Allen saw more than $500 million construction projects come online in 2018 and 2019. Millennials find mixed-used growth (which combines commercial and residential living) highly appealing. The SH 121 Corridor—with in excess of 900 acres of open land available for high-end, urban-style mixed-use developments and corporate campuses—has attracted several new developments to the area. epending on our age, we’ve grown up hearing our elders called the “Greatest Generation,” “Baby Boomers” or possibly “Gen Xers.” Next in the line of quantifiable succession, our younger siblings or cousins are the kids marketing agencies dubbed “Generation Next” or “Millennials.” Born in the decade before the September 11th terrorist attacks and during the technology tidal wave of Internet development and the subprime mortgage crisis, Millennials are folks who’ve likely never dialed a rotary phone. It’s always been cellphones for them, and thanks to Google, Yahoo and other search engines, the world of knowledge has always been in the literal palm of their hands.

After the coronavirus began its disruption of local and global trade, PFSweb and Arlington Research, a global commerce services company and a quantitative research agency respectively, joined forces and conducted a study of the virus’s impact

Woroch spoke to author Grant Sabatier about how his fellow 20-30 somethings prefer to spend their money. “Millennials are focused less on getting rich and buying stuff, and more on living an awesome life,” Sabatier said. “We value loving our life over acquiring things.” Likewise, Armela Escalona reported in lifehack.org that by nature, Millennials are inherently cosmopolitan. “Growing up in the period of globalization and the boom of technology, they are more attuned and interested in global issues. Thus, they also love to view their purchases through a global lens.” Escalona added Millennials who are now in their early 20s or 30s are nearing the phase where they’d like to get married

Other key findings from the study include: • Seventy-five percent of Millennials have bought goods online during the pandemic that they had not considered prior. • Forty-six percent of Millennials and Gen Z have more online grocery purchases than usual amid the pandemic, compared to just twenty-eight percent of Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation. • Millennials are the most demanding age group, with 24% expecting delivery of online purchases within 24 hours or less. It’s clear this generation is spending, but the target of their expenditures follows a slightly different route from the generations

Part of that includes utilizing remote technologies with which Millennials are comfortable. “I offer my clients 'face time' meetings and in-person meetings with masks and shields as well as physically distancing when we sit together or tour their homes,” Powell added. “Virtual tours and 3D tours allow clients to tour homes from their couch while conversing with me.” Charlotte Majzner at Fathom Realty acknowledged the pandemic has changed how they, too, show and list properties. “When showing homes to a client, we now meet at the property instead of driving together,” she explained. “We wear masks and booties before entering the home. I wear disposal gloves and open all doors going in and out so that my client doesn’t need to touch anything.” She added successful online communication is a crucial component. “We show more homes virtually now than ever before, and most meetings are virtual.” Chamber President Mayer pointed out many retailers within our community have a great online presence that serves them well in virtual shopping markets, but nothing replaces purchasing from brick and mortar stores on the streets where we live. “The Chamber encourages ALL generations to ‘Shop Local’ first and foremost,” she said. “Shopping local keeps tax dollars in our communities and the Chamber highly encourages everyone to ‘keep the money at home!’” At Allen’s Mexigo Restaurant & Club, Johnathan Tebeau knows keeping their business practices fluid has allowed them to tap into the Millennial buying power. At Brain Balance Achievement Centers,

Babar Chaudhry and his team have launched a new “College Reboot Program” that could support younger Millennials seeking to improve focus and reduce stress as they wrap up their college or post-graduate educations. “Here's how we've done it,” Chaudhry said. “We have focused on what we can control with improving our services and focus on our families and kids. In (the current) environment, our kids struggle a lot more and we need to ensure we support them in every way possible.”

ducation is a definite perk of living in Allen and Fairview. The region has many excellent choices, and the area’s public schools are top notch.

Serving students in Allen, as well as portions of Parker and McKinney, the Allen Independent School District (ISD) is home to more than 21,000 students in grades kindergarten through 12. The district offers 18 elementary schools, three middle schools, the Lowery Freshman Center and Allen High School. Allen ISD meets the community’s high expectations and students consistently score above state and area district averages. The district maintains a 97.3 percent graduation rate, with 92 percent of graduates moving on to post-high school educational opportunities. Allen ISD also enjoys a long-standing partnership with the City of Allen, and together they have combined school and park properties, 24 I

and share facilities for recreation and social activities. In Fairview, students are served by the Lovejoy Independent School District (LISD), which is home to more than 4,200 students, and consists of three elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school, and one high school. Lovejoy is a 5A school district known for its award-winning academic, fine arts, and athletic programs. LISD consistently receives both state and national recognitions for post-secondary readiness. Lovejoy ISD is ranked in the top 1% of more than 1,200 school districts in performance on the State of Texas Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams, and Lovejoy High School has been ranked in the top 1% of all high

schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Lovejoy graduated its first senior class in 2010. The district will remain a onehigh school district, with 9-12 enrollment not to exceed 1,900 students at Lovejoy High School. The district offers a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, with a tuition-based enrollment program for families living outside of district boundaries. Collin College is also raring to go. Students who want to pursue a college degree or career-specific training can choose from more than 100 associate degrees, certificates, and pathways, as well as bachelor’s degree programs in nursing and cybersecurity and continuing education programming; Collin College offers

TECHNICAL CAMPUS IS BUILT ON INNOVATION

construction, Collin College’s Technical Campus was rightfully considered a showpiece for the college district when it opened in Fall 2020. However, the impressive exterior is just one facet of the facility which Collin College believes will innovate workforce education in the same way the college has done with other educational areas in its 35 years of serving Collin County. Designed with high-demand, highwage careers in mind, the three-story, 340,000 square-foot facility will feature large workforce lab spaces dedicated to Automotive Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Collision Technology, Construction Management, Computer-Aided

Whether in times of pandemic or not, the area’s growing, expanding, diverse population brings with it an increasing need for quality health care and wellness services. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen continues to meet the demand for hospital services in Allen and throughout Collin County. Completion of an $68-million construction project added a new patient care tower with 75 medical/surgical beds along with significant new preoperative space, two new state-of-the-art operating suites and a second cardiac catheterization lab. Jared Shelton, Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and president of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital® Allen, is more than ready to discuss policy, planning and the hospital’s many big changes now taking place. “We’re the only hospital in Allen and we take that responsibility very seriously,” Shelton says. “We see ourselves as a community asset. It’s our responsibility to make sure we’re doing everything we can to provide what is needed.” Considering Allen’s nearly meteoric growth since the hospital’s inception 20 years ago, keeping pace with population swell and advances in medical technology has been a tall prescription to fill. But, Shelton is an enthusiastic advocate for his team and the momentum powering their vision to serve a community now home to more than 100,000 citizens. “When we started this (expansion) journey four years ago, we really wanted to understand what the community needed from its hospital,” Shelton explains. He credits Allen City leadership—the mayor, city council, school district leaders, Chamber of Commerce, and the Allen Economic Development Corporation—among key groups in the community that really worked to understand what residents needed and wanted.

IT’S OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE WE’RE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN TO PROVIDE WHAT IS NEEDED. “We still have a long ways to go in terms of developing a more comprehensive list of services,” he says. “We’re in the midst right now of building our electrophysiology program. That will be a huge win for us and hopefully a big access point for the community. We’re working on developing a stroke program in the next few months.” He says that’s a start, but there are a number of other treatments and services on the horizon. A key factor in that growth is launching the new Texas Health Athlete Complex. This feature, only a handful of months away from open, is a partnership between Athlete Training & Health and the Texas Health Sports Medicine Service Line. “Sports is a very meaningful part of what makes this community who it is,” Shelton says. “This will be a one stop

shop for everything having to do with sports medicine and athletics. This is a facility that is going to allow the whole community to come together around sports.” He adds, “We’re definitely moving in the right direction. older. Run by the Allen Parks and Recreation Department, the Center offers a variety of low-cost or free programs, trips, special events, activities and classes. We’re dusting off old ball gloves, investing in new running shoes or otherwise returning to the workout activity or sports dreams of our pasts. Lucky for us, Texas Health Sports Medicine has partnered both Allen Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and a fitness and human performance company called Athlete Training & Health to develop and launch a brand new state-of-the-art sports medicine complex. Located on Raintree Circle just off West Exchange Parkway here in Allen, the venture will also provide a full-length, lighted soccer field. Allen Sports Association board member and Texas Health Presbyterian President Jared Shelton explained the project will house sports medicine physicians within the same campus as orthopedists, physical therapists and trainers. He projects it will be everything an athlete needs in a single location. “People from 8 years to 88,” Shelton continued, “from professional athletes to people who want to lose some weight or get healthier, they’ll provide that training.” The facility will include a sports medicine rehab center with, perhaps most importantly, a 3-d motion lab with motion capture cameras that provide very precise measurements of how an athlete moves. This process can identify where they may be at risk for injury, allowing sports medicine physical therapists to make interventions, preventing re-injury or new injuries before they occur. “It will also be available to any athlete regardless of age, affiliation, or school,” said Shelton, "It can be an additional access point for people who love sports and want to play or get back to playing.” Shelton is thrilled with the plan’s possibilities. “It’s a unique project, but I think it’s going to fill a significant need for the community,” he said. ◆

hether you’re looking for the perfect place to have dinner with a special someone or making plans for a fun filled weekend with the family outdoors, Allen and Fairview residents can find plenty of reasons to stay and play right in their own backyard. While the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex oﬀers all the conveniences, perks, and cultural amenities that the fourth largest metroplex in the country can oﬀer, Allen and Fairview residents have their choice of world-class dining options, visual and performance arts, live entertainment, parks hiking trials, golfing, movie theaters, bowling alleys, indoor batting cages, and trampoline fun centers, and much, much more.

BEAT THE HEAT

PARK IT!

In Allen Fairview, we’re like one big family and there’s no shortage of family fun options in our communities. One favorite year-round activity is Allen Community Ice Rink. Here, the whole family can lace up some skates and take to the ice. If you’re a little shaky on the blades, no worries! The full-size rink offers programs and classes to help you learn the basics and lessons on figure skating and hockey as well. The rink is also available for rental for parties and other events.

Mild weather year-round and an abundance of beautiful parks and trails provide even more opportunities for quality outdoor experiences in the Allen Fairview area. The City of Allen has more than 1,364 acres of park land, 60 parks and facilities and 78 miles of walking and biking trails. Plans for the trails go beyond recreation and the City recently merged a plan to develop a comprehensive system of hike and bike trails with a separate plan to develop a system of bicycle-friendly streets. The new

master plan will combine trails and city streets to help residents move eﬃciently around town without motorized vehicles. The Parks and Recreation Department is also collaborating with other area communities to connect trails from one city to another. In Fairview, the city’s motto is “Keeping it Country,” and it is a community commitment to create and maintain areas of open green space. The city has three parks with pavilions available for picnicking and events and also maintains meandering Roadrunner Trail.

HITTING THE GREENS

Allen Civic Ballet. The Allen Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony Chorus is a professional orchestra with more than 60 member musicians. The Allen Philharmonic performs an annual concert series for subscribers and also presents a variety of programs for special events and community outreach. The Allen Civic Ballet is a delightful local treasure. The Ballet is dedicated to providing enjoyable dance performances for audiences of all ages. The company’s magical annual performance of The Nutcracker, accompanied by the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, has become a family favorite and a mainstay of the Christmas Season. The Ballet also presents a number of performances in the area during the spring.

If golfing is your chosen brand of fun, head to Fairview to the Heritage Ranch Golf & Country Club where you will find your place on the greens at the championship Metroplex public golf course. The course was designed by Arthur Hills, one of the nation’s leading golf course architects. The course is exceptionally scenic and surrounded by lush landscaping. Public golfers and country club members alike are welcome to tee off at the par 72 course. The course has its share of challenges but is also accommodating for golfers of all skill levels. If you’re in Allen, schedule your tee time at The Golf Club at Twin Creeks. The club offers daily rates for the public. Its award-winning 18-hole championship course was designed by Arnold Palmer. Golfers enjoy a peaceful, scenic course with tree-lined creeks. Another great option is The Courses at Watters Creek. Here you will find a 33-hole golf course and a 9-hole Foot Golf course (played with a soccer ball). There are options for every skill level and the courses even offer a six-hole short course called “The Futures Course” with all holes between 40- to 120yards in length, designed for beginners and players who want to work on their game from 100 yards in.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

Center stage for live entertainment is Allen Event Center, the area’s premier entertainment venue. More than 100 events take place at the Center every year, ranging from top-shelf musicians like Chicago, Khalid, Twenty One Pilots, Meghan Trainor and Counting Crows to professional sports. The Allen Americans professional hockey team and Dallas Sidekicks professional soccer team also take residence, and the Center has also been selected to host multiple U.S. Figure Skating Competitions. opments in the country. The Village’s dining and shopping venues have everything event attendees need within easy walking distance. CASUAL CONCERTS

You will find a more casual approach to live entertainment at the City of Allen’s Summer Sounds Concert Series and the Watters Creek Concerts by the Creek events. The Series is coordinated by the City of Allen and the Allen Parks and Recreation Department and features a variety of musical styles. Each concert takes place on Monday evenings for four weeks in the summer, and families are invited to bring a picnic dinner and a blanket and enjoy a dinner and entertainment on the lush lawn of the Joe Farmer Recreation Center Amphitheater. At Watters Creek, music lovers can enjoy free live “Concerts by the Creek” every Saturday from April through June. Concert-goers can take a seat on the lawn or make an evening of it by having dinner on the patio of one of the Watters Creek restaurants that overlooks the concert area. TIME TRAVEL

History buffs can get their fill of fun with a historic driving tour through the area. The Allen Heritage Guild Driving Tour highlights 15 stops of historic significance around town that includes historic homes and locations that have shaped the area’s history. Stops along the way include the Allen Christian Church built

in 1918, and the Old Stone Dam, which has been designated by the Texas Historical Commission as a State Archeological Landmark. IN SEARCH OF STYLE

If you are less into the past and more into current trends, shopping may be more your style. From one-of-a-kind boutiques to big-name brands, the retail offerings of Allen Fairview may surprise you. You can head to Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm for an upscale shopping experience in a unique, resort-style atmosphere. Make a day of it and spend some time shopping and enjoying the development’s interactive public art before relaxing with an al fresco meal at one of the center’s fine restaurants. If the kids are along for the ride, they’ll enjoy exploring the center’s tree house play area. The Village at Allen and Fairview Town Center are also great shopping, dining, and entertainment destinations with a number of unique specialty shops, big box stores and plenty of places to get a little retail therapy. If it’s bargains, you’re after, more than 100 outlet stores await you at Allen Premium Outlets. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS NOTE FROM 2020 CHAIRMAN 2020 has certainly been a year unlike any other! As we left the 2010s behind and got ready to roar into the ‘20s, I don’t think any of us were ready for what 2020 had in store. In the early days of the pandemic, as county and state orders were changing daily if not more rapidly, there was plenty of uncertainty and confusion about how our business community could move forward. But as the initial shock of a global pandemic wore oﬀ, our community did what it does best: came together, supported each other, and pushed on. It has been incredible to see how Allen and Fairview have adapted. In-person meetings moved to Zoom calls. Businesses quickly pivoted to online platforms to reach their customers. Physical spaces were altered and reimagined to be able to accommodate people in new ways. Because of these changes, business started returning quicker than anticipated. Across Texas, the recovery has outpaced that of most other states. I’m proud of the Allen Fairview Chamber of Commerce for being right in the middle of leading these changes and doing anything possible to help our members and the community at large. Under the leadership of Chamber CEO

Sharon Mayer, the full complement of the Chamber’s resources has been put into play. Some of my favorite examples have been our “We’re Open - Back ‘n Better” campaign, the #ShopAllenTX and “Shop Local Fairview” initiatives, and numerous virtual educational events to help businesses learn about COVID-19 related changes. A complex challenge requires dynamic leadership, and that is what the Chamber has delivered. While we may not be all the way back to where we were before the pandemic, we are certainly trending in that direction. As I look to the future it is comforting to know that our community has such a tremendous resource in the Chamber ﬁghting for our best interests. I know, despite what the future may hold, they will continue to live out their mission: to advocate, educate, and build business relationships that enable our communities and members to prosper.
