HISTORY The Pechanga band of Luiseño Native American Indians were our first residents. They ran their hands through the soil, met under the Great Oak and stood atop the rolling hills overlooking the valley, naming it Temecula, or “sunshine through the mist.” Gateway arches at the northern and southern entrances to this downtown district commemorate our past. In 1859, in the era of the Butterfield Stage, the first U.S. post office was established here, marking Temecula’s permanence and importance. Thus, the year 1859 is boldly emblazoned on each arch. Two decades later, in 1882, the Temecula town site was established with the arrival of the railroad, with a station in Old Town, midway between Riverside and San Diego. Then, in the early 1900s, new roads reached the valley and helped to open up Temecula to the outside world. The Inland Highway (the first, paved, two-lane, county road and ancestor of Highway 395) was built through Temecula Valley in 1915. Until 1949, it ran down Old Town Front Street where restaurants, gas stations, and motels served those travelling through the Temecula Valley. Meanwhile, from the 1800s until the 1960s, farmers and ranchers blanketed the valley with cattle and crops. In 1905, cattle baron Walter Vail began buying vast acreage here. By 1947, the Vail Ranch included more than 87,000 acres. In 1964, the Vails announced the sale of their ranch to a consortium of developers that had plans for a masterplanned community to be known as Rancho California. When the City of Temecula was incorporated in 1989, residents voted to retain the original Native American name of the village and railroad town site. Today, more than a dozen historical properties dating as far back as the late 1880s still exist and have been

OLD TOWN

Enjoy the vintage, industrial feel of 1909 Gastropub 28656 Front St. | Temecula, CA 92590 | www.1909temecula.com | 951-619-1909 Whether you are in Temecula for a vacation, visiting friends, or work, look no further than 1909, a unique restaurant and gastropub located in the heart of Old Town Temecula. As you drive through Old Town, one of the things that draws you to this restaurant is the large patio seating area that is always filled with people and tons of laughter and good times. After reading and hearing about all of the amazing reviews 1909 has from locals and out-of-towners, this restaurant is one to experience for yourself! 1909 is a tribute to the Machado building, the location where the restaurant and bar now lives. Well before the 1909 burger was created, this structure has been home to a trading post, livery, auto shop and most notably a bar. During the 70’s, the Longbranch Saloon was known as the roughest place in town to get a drink. Locals often stop in and tell stories of brawls and shootings. In fact, several bullet holes are still in the ceiling. It is no wonder that 1909 continues to draw the crowds.

After debating on what to order from the menu, the top choices seemed to be the 1909 burger and bison burger. Both are top sellers and what they are known for. I chose the bison burger this time and I would drive from anywhere to eat that delicious treat again! While dining at 1909, don’t forget to try their large selection of craft beer, local wine and especially handcrafted cocktails. You can order off of their menu or give them a little direction and let the bartenders and mixologists create a unique one-of-akind drink that will wow your palette. The Cedar Smoked Old Fashioned seemed to be a crowd favorite and gives a great show while they make it. Adding to the many offerings that 1909 has is their brunch menu that is offered on Saturdays and Sundays, complete with bottomless mimosas made with fresh squeezed orange juice and a bloody mary cart that comes to your table. It doesn’t get better than that! For those who want to try something more unique, order the Carnivore bloody mary complete with chicken wings, bacon and a meat straw. Yes, a meat straw. Even the kid’s menu is a unique experience. The menu has vintage motorcycles to color and meals from kobe corn dogs to grilled chicken. And if you happen to have your four-legged children with you, even they can order from the dog menu and enjoy it on the front patio. 1909 is easy to find as well. It is at the major intersection of Front & Main, just down the street from the City Hall. Te m e c u l a Va l l e y V i s i t o r G u i d e I 19

repurposed and reopened in Old Town. Yet the area continually improves and re-imagines itself in new, contemporary ways. Mixed in with the historical facades, recently built structures reflect different architectural styles, lending an authentic and thoroughly individual spirit cultivated here for more than 150 years. Although Temecula now boasts a population close to 110,000 and nearly 3 million visitors each year, our heritage is not forgotten.

Although Old Town is the historic heart of Temecula Valley, the newly restored Vail Headquarters on Temecula Parkway gives history buffs another place to soak in our stagecoach-era heritage. Originally a trading post established by Louis and Ramona Wolf (Ramona was the Chugach heroine of the eponymous novel written in 1884 by Helen Hunt Jackson), the site would later become the headquarters of one of California’s largest cattle operations, owned by Walter Vail. The Vail Ranch was sold to developers in the 1960s. More than 40 years later, in 2016, Vail Headquarters reopened, thanks to the efforts of an active group of citizens who worked to restore and preserve many of the original buildings as a vital part of Temecula’s history. It now houses charming shops and cafes, a Tuesday morning farmers market, and an unmistakable air of days gone by.

Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country spans more than 33,000 acres—the largest viticultural area in Southern California—yet is one of the state’s best-kept secrets. First planted in 1968, the region is now home to more than 40 wineries, from boutique to large-production, rustic to modern. Its Mediterranean-like climate is marked by long, warm days moderated by the ocean breeze that blows through the Rainbow Gap, and cool nights. It's a grape grower’s (and vacationer’s!) dream. Temecula Valley Wine Country is that rare hidden-gem wine region—one of those places you’ll want to discover before anyone else does.

From Arneis to Zinfandel, a veritable A-Z of grapes are grown and vinified into dozens of varietal wines and blends from dry to dessert, sparkling to sweet. Temecula Valley wines reflect the hard work and passion of their creators, regularly receiving 90+ scores and earning more than 5,000 domestic and international awards to-date. Our tasting rooms are warm and welcoming, and many offer live music and other entertainment, as well as full (and delicious) food service—a feature unique to the region. Midweek is the perfect time to come, when tasting rooms are intimate, and the odds that you’ll find winemakers and winery owners behind the tasting bar are high. 28 I V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

A spirit of celebration—of life, the harvest, the day—pervades Temecula Valley, and an inclusiveness that begs locals and visitors alike to clink glasses with your neighbor as you plan your next visit. The result is an emerging wine region that offers something surprising and delightful, and provides yet another reason to love Southern California. WINE TASTING 101 In Temecula Valley, we all agree that visiting wineries should be fun, educational and, most importantly, memorable. Here are some helpful hints to get the most from your wine-tasting experience:

Slip away for a day, a weekend or a week to get a taste of all the flavors Southern California’s largest wine region has to offer with two extraordinary winery resort dessnaaons to choose from, South Coast Winery Resort & Spa and Carter Estate Winery and Resort, you can indulge yourself in world-class wining and dining, a pampering spa and an unmatched lodging experience. Whether you are seeking advenure or a quiet getaway, you’ll find them tucked away in the Carter family vineyards of Temecula.

Bring supplies: Before heading out, pack a cooler with water and snacks to keep you going during the day. It’s also the perfect place to stash the bottles you purchase so they don’t overheat! Taste like a pro: First visit to a winery? Remember the “Five S’s of Wine-tasting” and no one will ever know:

Old World Europe

Southern California Style!

Sight: Examine the clarity and color of the wine; it can tell you about the age, type and body of what’s in your glass. Swirl: Gently roll the wine around in your glass to bring out the aromas. Sniff: Bring the glass to your nose and breathe in. Try and identify the smells… and the experiences the bouquet brings to mind. Sip: Let the wine pass over your palate. Is it fruity? Sweet? Bitter? Fresh? Savor: A great wine leaves a lasting impression. Engage: Be adventurous and ask questions. Don’t know what to try? Describe the wines you typically enjoy and your server will be happy to suggest a pour that’s likely to please. Sample something you’ve never heard of before and you might just go home with a new favorite. Pace yourself: Don’t try to visit too many wineries in one day—you and your palate will be overwhelmed. Three to five wineries per day is a good benchmark. With more than 45 in our midst, it’s a good idea to plan to stay a few days! Relax, explore and have fun! A SPECIAL MEMENTO

The majority of Temecula Valley wineries make only a small quantity of each vintage—not enough for national distribution. So, you won’t often find our wines in grocery stores or wine shops; they’re mostly available to visitors via winery tasting rooms (or websites—shipping varies by state). That means, when you buy a bottle to take home, you’re bringing back something truly unique! Some airlines serving California will let you check up to a case of wine for free—research this perk before you go!

Enjoy the Best Wines and the Best Views at Mount Palomar Winery in Temecula 33820 Rancho California Rd. | Temecula 92591 | www.MountPalomar.com | 951.676.5047 Mount Palomar Winery is where you go when you’re looking for somewhere beautiful, both classic and classy, with a selection of award-winning wines. Mount Palomar Winery is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in the valley, founded by an Italian immigrant, John Poole, a wine lover and a risk taker who saw the possibilities of turning barren land in Temecula into amazing vineyards. Mount Palomar Winery has built on and improved his vision by pioneering wines and techniques in Temecula, planting the first Mediterranean varieties, including the first Sangiovese. This tradition of innovation is being carried on in the newly opened Annata Bistro and Bar, and in future plans to build a resort, amphitheater, and new private event venues. Past and present owners and the dedicated staff believe that wines should reflect a sense of harmony, presenting the taster with an array of sensations that are pleasing, yet complex. This is reflected in every one of our wines, including our Solera Cream Sherry, produced in the oldest outdoor Sherry Solera in the United States. You’ll find this dedication to quality not just in our wines, but in all of our services, as a winery, a restaurant, and the perfect backdrop for weddings and private events. Mount Palomar Winery encompasses romance and beauty, with views of surrounding mountains, picturesque sunsets, and walkways

lined with tall Italian Cyprus trees. The winery sits on 315 rolling acres, with 55 acres of vineyards, boasting 25 varietals. The décor and the exceptional service all come together to capture the essence of an enchanting day or evening. We host everything from birthday dinners to corporate events, up to 1,000 guests. Our outdoor venues are filled with statues, flowers, and green grass, and are perfect for wedding receptions, concerts, 5k runs, and parties of all kinds. For indoor events, you can enjoy the rustic charm of our barrel room, and host an evening surrounded by barrels of fine wine, aging until their time to shine. Make reservations at Annata Bistro and Bar and you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and craft cocktails, surrounded by floor to ceiling windows overlooking the valley. We believe a wedding venue should be just as special as the event itself, and be a beautiful reminder of the day you said “I DO” every time you come back for a visit. Our 5 star support staff will guide you easily through the process, starting with a personal tour and staying with you all the way through to the last dance. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed wine tasting experience, the perfect wedding venue, a friendly get-together, or the best birthday party you’ve ever thrown, come to Mount Palomar Winery for an unforgettable experience! ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT A region alive with theater, public art, live music and art festivals year-round

50 I V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

The creative culture of Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country is on display year-round. Live music is a given at most wineries in the summertime, and Old Town Temecula practically hums with performances all year, from theater to symphony, honkytonk to rhythm and blues. Pechanga Resort & Casino boasts a performance space— and acts—second to none in our valley. Around town, too, works of public art and festivals celebrate the arts. Check our calendar to see what’s on offer when you visit!

OLD TOWN The indigenous Luiseño Indians were known for their basket-making. A fountain in front of City Hall commemorates our heritage, emulating a basket in the Luiseño tradition. “The Emigrant Trail” mosaic art, “History of Temecula” mural, and the Old Town arches also provide visual cues to our cultural roots. Festivals celebrating fine and domestic arts and crafts line the streets throughout the year. And live performances of theater, symphony and modern music round out the culture of our downtown district.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE “Go Wine Tasting with Old Fashioned Horse Power!” (858) 205-9161 | www.temeculacarriageco.com

Tucked behind the orange groves, nestled in the heart of wine country is a family owned and operated business called the Temecula Carriage Company. With their well loved herd of horses, the Temecula Carriage Company offers private romantic horse drawn carriage rides through the vineyards. Each carriage is outfitted with a wicker picnic basket which can include a bottle of wine and a picnic of meats, cheeses, crackers, chocolates and olives. Parasols and flannel blankets are also onboard the carriages and within reach of the riders. Snuggle with your loved one as you listen to the clip clop of the horse’s hooves. Group wine tasting tours are also available on the classic horse drawn trolley. Sit back and enjoy the countryside as the horses pull you along at a relaxing old time pace. On this group tour, 4 wineries will be visited throughout the day. Dine at the restaurants, shop at the gift shops, relax in the gardens and of course, wine taste.

HOT AIR BALLOONING A trip to Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country isn’t complete without a hot air balloon flight over the vineyards at sunrise. Balloon rides are available year-round, weather permitting at sunrise only, due to afternoon and early evening winds. And our annual Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival is the largest ballooning event in California, celebrating this most majestic means of air transport. HIKING Numerous hiking trails provide ample opportunity for novices and expert hikers and trail runners alike. The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is located in the Santa Ana Mountains above Temecula Valley. Its 9,000 acres are filled with Engelmann oak woodlands, riparian wetlands, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, bunchgrass prairie, and vernal pools, as well as more than 200 species of native birds and 49 endangered, threatened or rare animal and plant species. An especially popular day-hike destination at the Reserve is the Moreno and Machado Adobes. Other popular trails can be found at Lake Skinner and Vail Lake. BIKING Bike trails, whether for casual exploring or serious mountain biking, are available in Temecula Valley. If you didn’t bring your bike, rentals are available! Mountain bike trails can be found at the Santa Rosa Plateau, and serious cyclists love the hills throughout wine country. Old Town Temecula is bike-friendly and a great stop for a picnic. Lake for breathtaking views of the valley. Bring your own horses and know they’ll be well cared for at Galway Downs, Green Acres or any of our many local stables, or take lessons or book a trail ride there, as well. FISHING & BOATING Launch a boat and throw out your line at Lake Skinner or Vail Lake. You will need a fishing license, so be sure to research requirements before you go. ICE SKATING Yep, you read that right! In December, during Temecula Chilled, an outdoor ice rink takes center stage at City Hall. Practice your pirouettes or grab a glider and enjoy our mild, sunny winter weather on ice.

OTHER AGRICULTURE IN TEMECULA VALLEY Temecula Valley’s most widely planted crop may be wine grapes, but it has always been an agricultural haven for ranchers, growers and artisanal producers. A wide array of family-owned farms dot our expansive landscape, producing fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy, and specialty crops like lavender and olives. Come taste, learn and explore! Temecula Olive Oil Company Visit the storefront in Old Town Temecula then book a tour to see the company’s own 26-acre olive grove, where you can also enjoy a grilled lunch. To reserve, call (866) 654-8396. Temecula Lavender Company On select summer dates, stroll this family-farmed one-acre lavender field, farmstand and merlot vineyard alongside the Santa Gertrudis Creek in Wine Country. Call (951) 676-1931 or stop in the company’s Old Town boutique to book a visit. Farmers Markets California-certified farmers offer everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs,

fresh-cut flowers, honey, plants and more, and they offer their homegrown goodness at three farmers markets each week, typically from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m: • Tuesdays at Vail Headquarters • Wednesdays at Promenade Temecula (outside JCPenney) • Saturdays on the south end of Old Town Temecula Peltzer Farms This family farm opens its gates for pumpkin picking, a petting zoo, an antique tractor collection, and family-fun activities in September and October. Big Horse Feed Also open in September and October, an 11-acre corn maze—Southern California’s largest—delights children and adults alike. You can also choose freshly picked pumpkins, watch pig races and more fun farm activities with your family. Group Farm Tours A variety of local farms welcome groups of 10 or more. LEGENDARY DESIGN Cross Creek Golf Club, designed by golf legend Arthur Hills, boasts groves of mature oaks and sycamores, rippling creeks and stunning panoramic views. Journey at Pechanga Resort & Casino was also designed by Hills. “The grandeur of panoramic vistas, rock outcroppings, stately old oak trees and the mountain edging one side of the course,” Hills says, “became a tapestry on which to weave the strategic aspects of the game of golf in order to evoke the spirit of competition.”

NATURAL BEAUTY The Legends Golf Club in the heart of Temecula offers 18 holes, five lakes, a number of doglegs, rolling greens and stroke-stealing bunkers. Temecula Creek Inn’s 27-hole championship golf course comprises more than 300 acres of natural beauty, dramatic elevation changes and majestic mountain views. These and other regional courses provide ample opportunity to bring your A-game when visiting Temecula Valley.

the day you’d like to play to ensure your timing and logistics work. (Tip: check www.visittemeculavalley.com/golf for tee times, etc.)

GOLF TRAVEL TIPS Whether you’ve traveled to Temecula Valley to play our award-winning courses or you’re a golfer who just happens to be looking for a few rounds while you’re in town, how do you ensure you can find and play the course that’s right for you? Here are some quick tips for achieving the perfect par.

Give yourself time Arrive at your chosen course with extra time to orient yourself. Get there early enough to perhaps have breakfast or a light lunch at the course, browse the pro shop and clubhouse. Some courses have memorabilia that recall great moments on the course you can strive to re-create!

Map your itinerary Check the proximity of the courses to where you’re staying or where you’ll be

Get a feel for the green Rather than heading straight for the first hole, spend some time at the range and putting greens. Try to get a feel for the speed and contour of the green so you feel more at home when you tee off.

Reserve in advance Book a tee time so you’re sure to be able to play when and where you want to. If you’re thinking of a meal before or after your game, you might want to reserve a table in the restaurant in advance, too.

Take stock of the scorecard Study the scorecard before your first swing to get an idea of the course layout. The card provides several tips, including where water and other hazards lie.

Journey at Pechanga 68 I V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

A little mental preparation and a few practice putts go a long way toward making the challenge of an unfamiliar course a lot more enjoyable. And don’t forget to keep your scorecard (or great gift from the pro shop) as a memento of your trip!

CrossCreek Golf Club 43860 Glen Meadows Road | Temecula, CA 92590 | 951-506-3402 | www.crosscreekgolfclub.com The stunning beauty of the Temecula Valley and the legendary design work of Arthur Hills have come together at CrossCreek Golf Club. The result is a pristine Southern California course where great golf is played in a secluded natural environment. Groves of age-old oak and sycamore trees and rippling creeks provide intriguing scenery, which meshes with Hills’ challenging layout to create a haven for exceptional golf. The natural hazards demand careful shot-making. The course features firm, hard to hold fairways, rough-edged bunkers that are difficult to escape, and firm, fast greens that slope away for tricky putts. The par 71 layout runs 6,853 yards from the championship tees, combining length with the array of natural hazards. There are three shorter tee positions that make the course accessible to all levels of player. CrossCreek is open for daily play at affordable rates and offers attractive membership packages for singles and families. They also offer Resident Card and Senior Card programs with outstanding benefits and discounts for local area residents and seniors over 60.

This course is a popular choice for golf outings, providing large and small groups with all the amenities they need. CrossCreek provides groups with a world class golf experience and an attitude of service to back it up. Whether it be a civic event for 100-plus golfers or a small group outing for friends, they provide the finest course and facilities

for their clientele. Their large facility includes a 300-yard driving range and putting green, a golf shop with a full range of equipment and golf gear and a spacious clubhouse with the CrossCreek Grille, where groups can enjoy a delicious post-golf game meal.

As well, CrossCreek Golf Club offers a great venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions. With one-of-a-kind photography locations and a fully trained event staff, CrossCreek ensure brides and grooms enjoy a wedding day filled with everything they dreamed of. The golf course creates a classy and serene setting that will be unforgettable for them as well as their guests. Designed to be the ultimate in casually elegant weddings, CrossCreek can accommodate both intimate and large outdoor weddings and receptions at the most reasonable of prices. CrossCreek’s own online tee-time booking engine makes securing tee times fast and easy. By going through the course’s website, www. crosscreekgolfclub.com, they offer golfers the lowest rate anywhere with no processing fees. Conveniently located only 5 minutes from I-15, there are no homes, no freeways and no noise to disrupt the serenity of your play. FAMILY FUN Perfect for parents, fun-filled for kids 70 I V i s i t Te m e c u l a Va l l e y. c o m

When visiting a wine region, activities for kids might seem too much to hope for. But never fear—Temecula Valley Southern California Wine Country delivers fun for even the youngest travelers in your group. Take the kids to our award-winning children’s museum. Pack finger foods for picnics at wineries and parks. Indulge your sweet tooth—and theirs—with treats from local sweet shops.

FAMILY FUN FAMILY FUN

KID-FRIENDLY HIGHLIGHTS Old Town Temecula – For homemade fun or retro candies, don’t miss Old Town Sweet Shop. Head upstairs at Temecula Valley Museum for historic displays for kids. Pennypickle’s Workshop: Temecula Children’s Museum has won many awards for its super-fun science-based approach to expanding young minds. (You’ll love it as much as your kids do!)

SEASONAL FAMILY ACTIVITIES Temecula Valley Fair – In March, carnival games and rides, pig races, fair food and more delight locals and visitors alike.

Wine Country – Wilson Creek Winery invites families to picnic on their lawn while the kids enjoy the adjacent playground. The patio restaurant and bocce ball court will satisfy young ones, as well. Keep an eye out for Molly Merlot, their resident pig; she loves to say hello. Other wineries offer picnicking, too—call ahead before you pack your cooler.

Harvest Fun – October brings family fun, agricultural-style. Pick pumpkins, take a hay ride and pet friendly farm animals at Peltzer Farms, where a brand-new winery invites parents to unwind, as well. Across town, at Big Horse Feed, get lost in SoCal’s largest corn maze and enjoy the pumpkin patch, pony and hay rides, corn cannon, face painting, pumpkin bowling, pig races and more.

Family-friendly Dining - Enjoy lunch or dinner at one of Old Town Temecula’s casual restaurants, like Mad Madeline’s Grill, The Bank Mexican Restaurant (tip: sit in the vault) or Rosa’s Cantina. Around town, look for family-friendly restaurants like Corner Bakery Café, Annie’s Café or The Broken Yolk Café.

Temecula Chilled – For the whole month of December, Temecula Valley celebrates the holidays with special “chilled” menu items, outdoor decorations and light displays, ice skating and other yuletide entertainment. Don’t miss Pennypickle’s Workshop’s Winter Wonderland in mid-December, when Santa Claus and real snow bring the season to life for the whole family.

Movies (and theater) in the Park – Every summer, bring a blanket and picnic dinner for family films in parks throughout the city. Or take young thespians for Shakespeare in the Vines at Baily Winery, with outdoor performances from summer into fall.

A VACATION FOR EVERYONE Temecula Valley is within an easy drive of some of the places most kids only dream about visiting. Stay here among the vineyards and make excursions to Disneyland (67 miles), Hollywood (91 miles), Legoland (37 miles), the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Ocean (30 miles) and the San Diego Zoo (57 miles) and Safari Park (36 miles), and Seaworld (60 miles). Make centrally located Temecula Valley the hub of your family vacation and give everyone in your family—from the wine-lovers to the mouseketeers—a vacation to remember!
