UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS - BILL & MELINDA GATES COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPLEX / DELL COMPUTER SCIENCE HALL Austin, TX 233,000 sf
STG Design teamed with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects on The Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex and Dell Computer Science Hall at the University of Texas at Austin. The site for the new facility is located adjacent to the ACES building (a previous STG Design project). This project includes the demolition of a current building and new construction of a 233,000sf state-of-the-art facility for the top 10 nationally ranked Computer Science Department at UT. The project consists of two seven-level towers and a connecting glass atrium. The space includes computer labs, faculty offices, graduate student rooms, classrooms, faculty lounges and auditoriums. The project received LEED Silver certification.
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS - INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING AND SCIENCES (ICES) BUILDING Austin, TX 180,000 sf
facilitates collaborative interaction between faculty and graduate students from three academic departments. State-of-the-art spaces include computer labs, a 200seat distance learning auditorium, offices, discussion lounges, and a visualization laboratory, which utilizes cutting-edge audio and visual modeling technology. The architectural design of the ICES Building challenges the notion that technology-oriented buildings should be “futuristic in their appearance. Based on input from user groups, STG Design discovered that the most advanced scientific inquiry flourished in places designed for human interaction. As such, comfortably furnished alcoves, lounges, cafes and patios are featured throughout the facility.
ST. EDWARD’S UNIVERSITY - JOHN BROOKS WILLIAMS NATURAL SCIENCES CENTER Austin, TX 63,900 sf
The design program for the St. Edward’s John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center includes laboratory, classroom, auditorium and faculty office space for the various natural science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics. This new 63,928 square-foot facility provides undergraduates with a hands-on, laboratory-rich, collaborative environment. The Natural Sciences Center will also advance the campus master plan by defining an academic precinct at the center of campus. The siting of the building creates outdoor gathering spaces dedicated to advancing the natural sciences. The architectural vocabulary of the project drew its inspiration from existing historic structures dating back to the early years of St. Edward’s University more than 100 years ago. Moore Ruble Yudell was Prime Architect and STG Design was Associate Architect for this project.
ST. EDWARD’S UNIVERSITY - JOHN BROOKS WILLIAMS NATURAL SCIENCES CENTER (PHASE II) Austin, TX 54,700 sf
Phase II, to be occupied by Fall of 2013, includes space for the campus’s large computer science department, the mathematics and physics departments, as well as general assignment classrooms. The Department of Natural Sciences offices are being relocated to this student-oriented facility and, through generous circulation and interaction spaces provided, contribute to the close connections fostered between staff, faculty and students. Also prominently featured is a 125-seat multi-functional lecture/performance hall developed to provide space for the Natural Sciences and the campus’s general population. The project has been undertaken as a close collaboration between Moore Ruble Yudell and STG Design, helping to establish a deep understanding of the two offices’ working methods and technical support systems. The use of a shared Revit model for Phase II has allowed the design team to address the campus’s aggressive design/documentation schedule and maintain overall design and program responsive quality while fitting within tightly controlled budget parameters.
THE CALLAWAY HOUSE AUSTIN Austin, TX 586,600 sf
The Callaway House Austin is a 586,600sf, 17-story high rise student dormitory and apartment building that includes approximately 219 units (753 beds) and 666 structured parking spaces. The project is located at 505 West 22nd Street, one block west of The University of Texas, Austin campus and is within the City of Austin’s “University Neighborhood Overlay” zoning, which allows increased height and area suitable for an urban location. The project is targeted to achieve a LEED “Certified” rating and Austin Energy Green Building (AEGB) program 1-star sustainability levels. The scheduled construction completion date is August 2013.
ST. ANDREW’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL DELL FINE ARTS CENTER Austin, TX 48,000 sf
The Dell Fine Arts Center at the St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is a three-building complex consisting of a 34,000sf Performing Arts Building with a 400seat Proscenium Theater and a 125-seat Black Box Theatre, a 6,200sf Music Building and a 6,200sf Art Studio. With a construction budget of $16.5 million, the site plan of the Fine Arts Center was built on the formal campus layout adjacent to it, but shifts the axis slightly to give the Center a distinct identity. The resulting “Arts Quad” links the new buildings to the existing campus and provides for informal gathering spaces like the Sculpture Garden and Amphitheatre that will broadcast the students’ artistic endeavors to the greater campus. Buildings on the Arts Quad echo the architectural vocabulary of the existing campus with their shed roof forms, deep porches with ample North-facing glass and covered walkways. The material palette of patterned cast-in-place concrete, limestone veneer, composite metal panels with subtle color shifts and glass curtain walls complement the regional materials on the existing buildings, but provide an updated aesthetic for this state-of-the-art complex.
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY Prairie View, TX 67,000 sf
The Prairie View A&M Juvenile Justice and Psychology Building serves as the terminus for the University’s West Campus mall. The building houses interactive distance learning classrooms, seminar rooms, behavioral laboratories and a 300-seat auditorium, as well as faculty and graduate student offices. A central, four-story rotunda with a circular staircase serves as an interactive link between all instructional and support spaces.
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS - SCHOOL OF LAW RENOVATIONS Austin, TX 1,900 sf
The renovation of the auditorium classroom at The University of Texas School of Law creates a state-ofthe-art space for students to learn. The room seats 138 students at powered desktops and incorporates a dual screen projection system, surround sound, and a wireless data connection. The interior composition celebrates finishes found throughout the history of the law school while adding acoustically advanced features and finishes to help achieve proper sound in the space.
