Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?
IF you're an Ostrich, you prefer not to think about the inevitable. Being an Ostrich means trusting the fortunes of your loved ones to chance, once you've gone, and having no control over what happens to your possessions and who should benefit from them.
list of priorities. If the roof leaks, no matter what you're doing or how tight your finances, you get it fixed fast! We can honestly say that the vast majority of clients feel great after we have written their Wills.
TO an ostrich, death is a five-letter word and a load of stigma.
IF, however, you're a wise owl, you take the time to think, question, and act in order to write a will, and take steps to protect your loved ones, when you're gone. WHY BOTHER MAKING A WILL? MY FAMILY WILL GET EVERYTHING WHEN I DIE! WON'T THEY? WRITING a Will may be something you've been thinking about for many years. The reasons for having a Will are many, but, if for no other reason, a Will makes life a lot easier for those you leave behind at a time of sorrow. If you die without a Will (Intestate), your family has to sort out many administrative items and are obliged to the decisions made by law as to who inherits what, decisions you should have really made by writing a Will. AS to when you should write a Will, the answer is NOW. There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age. Also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn't need much changing, so it's not something you have to think about often, but only in the event of a major change in circumstances, such as marriage, birth of a first child or divorce. SO, why do many people put off the task of writing a Will? EXCUSES: there are many excuses for putting off writing a Will. Here are the most common ones: 1. "WRITING A WILL IS TEMPTING FATE": One in three adults in Britain have already written a Will - so, if writing one has fatal results, the population would soon be reduced by 18 million people! In fact, the British annual death-rate is surprisingly stable and definitely bears no relation to the number of people who write Wills. 2. "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO LEAVE": Everybody leaves something. It may not be much, but, surely, that's even more reason to make sure it goes to those you care about? Also, it is not just making sure your worldly goods go to the right people. As mentioned, a Will can mean a lot less inconvenience for those left to sort things out. 3. "I JUST HAVEN'T GOT ROUND TO IT": This is normally because the job doesn't rate high enough on your Sales Team 01782 204 392
We often receive comments, such as "What a relief" or "I've put it off for years, but, at last, I can rest easy."
IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results. Your circumstances will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting and Single. Many complexities can arise, and we shall cover these in full detail (as well as dispelling many unfounded, but popular, beliefs about them) in the next issue of SENIORS TODAY.

50+ Forum to focus on 'Housing Options' "WE want information, true engagement and to know our opinion counts." Thus, a member of Stoke-on-Trent Fifty+ Forum, a City-wide group of people, aged 50 or over, which meets four times a year, and is part of EngAGE, a project which aims to make it easier for seniors to give your views on services that already exist in Stoke-on-Trent and to have a say (in a friendly, relaxed environment, with light refreshments provided on the day) about how they should be provided in the future.
Harold Clowes Community Hall, Bentilee Neighbourhood Centre, on Thursday, October 25th, between 10am and 2.30pm. The subject of the meeting is 'Housing Options for Older People', with seniors, who have run their own homes for years and may need some help in the future, given the chance to hear about the City Council's housing-plans, share your experiences and say what you need. EngAGE makes it easier for seniors to give your views about local services and to influence the way in which services are planned and delivered.
by a partnership of voluntary sector organisations working with people aged 50 and over: Age UK North Staffordshire, Approach, North Staffs. Pensioners' Convention and The Saltbox. For more information or to book a place, contact the EngAGE team at EngAGE Stoke-on-Trent, Palace Chambers, 21, Stafford Street, Hanley ST1 1JW, on (01782) 200736 or via email: admin@ engagestoke-on-trent.org.uk You can also visit the website: www. engagestokeontrent.org.uk
The quarterly meetings attract an average attendance of 100 people, and senior staff, who speak to the Forum, come from the NHS, the City Council and other organisations which provide services for older people - with Forum members listening AND listened to!
It achieves this by setting up Forum meetings; arranging local meetings; visiting groups attended by people aged 50 and over (such as social and lunch clubs); sending out brief questionnaires; and liaising with other organisations which work with and/or consult with seniors.
The next Forum takes place in the

getting help can be difficult.
HOW many of you remember splendid Professor Heinz Wolff from his highlyidiosyncratic appearances on such BBC TV programmes as 'Tomorrow's World' and 'The Great Egg Race'?
"That's worth a lot of money - even on a minimum wage, you are talking about ÂŁ30,000 of care."
"It's not just that it is expensive, but getting people at the right time and continuty of care are a problem.
Well, the 86-years-old scientist, acclaimed for his many inventions, has come up with his latest innovation - Care4Care, a scheme which offers, hopefully, a new blueprint for elderly care by allowing volunteers to earn care-time for tomorrow by helping others today. Currently being piloted with a group of about 90 volunteers, the scheme's aim is to allow millions of people to have their own 'care pension' - a guarantee of care
Heinz Wolff has teamed up with the Young Foundation thinktank, which has been working with Age UK on the Isle of Wight to pilot Care4Care. According to the foundation, the scheme's combination of altruism and enlightened self-interest makes it a practical way to meet the rapidly-rising demand for care care for older people. On the Isle of Wight, volunteers have been 'banking' care-hours by helping older people with a whole range of tasks to help them maintain their independence at home, from trips to the shops to changing a lightbulb.
in their old age at a time when public funding is enduring drastic 'cuts'!
Jim Edmond and his wife, Jan, were already volunteers with Age UK when they signed up for the scheme, motivated by the fact that they both had aged parents whom they cared for over a number of years.
Explained Professor Wolff: "I see Care4Care as a form of mobilisation where the community makes up its mind to do something the country desperately needs.
Said Jim: "This is going to attact other groups of people and, perhaps, younger people who know their pensions are not going to be as great in future as they have been.
"If you put in a few hours every week over the years, lo and behold, when you get

"The more people who are willing to THE eyes have it! do this, the Professor Heinz Wolff. better - it's all hands to the pump!" Wolff and the Young Foundation are planning to have a national network in place, allowing people not only to 'bank' care-time for themselves, but also to earn credits for older relatives living in other parts of the country. The partners won ÂŁ47,000 from innovation foundation, Nesta, to develop the pilot, and are now looking at developing a sustainable business-model for the national roll-out. Added Professor Wolff: "People have got used to the idea that the state is going to provide everything from cradle to grave, but they are beginning to realise that is no longer so. "As we get used to the idea that the community will have to do more more for itself, there will be no shortage of people coming forward. "We are talking about millions of people taking part - just like the washing-up, it will become part of your life." firstname.lastname@example.org

Christmas Ideas Enjoy the ultimate '60s' Christmas Party (with FREE champagne for groups)! IT'S nearly Christmas, Guys 'n' Gals! That means that Uncle Eric is back at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre later this year - and ready to murder yet another literary classic: oh yes, he is! When Eric makes the mistake the borrowing one of Hippie Dave's special cigarettes, he finds himself taking a trip (sorry, adventure) that he'll never forget. He meets the Queen of Hearts (looking strangely like Madge); a grinning Cheshire Cat, which reminds him of Hippie Dave; a rock band called 'The Mad Hatters', who are trashing their own tea party; and several people qualified to play Tweedledum and Tweedledumber. All this and a host of psychedelic '60s' songs to make the whole experience more bearable. When asked if he saw any similarities between himself and Lewis Carroll, impresario, David Graham (the mastermind behind the 'Uncle Eric' phenonemon), replied: "Of course, 'Alice in Wonderland' is considered the greatest example of nonsense literature - I've been writing illiterate nonsense for years!" What started out thirteen years ago as a one-night event has now become a North

Staffordshire tradition, attracting record-breaking audiences. "When I first brought Eric here, he was on tour, but, since then, Newcastle has become somewhere really special for him, with a new script written each time he comes back, especially for the New Vic," explained actor, musician, scriptwriter, director and producer, David. Since meeting his wife at the Newcastle theatre-in-the-round, the region has become even more special to David, who has left behind his native London to make neighbouring Cheshire his home. He added: "The recognition I get from people here is amazing: it's like being in a 'soap opera'; when I'm not working, I'll go into Newcastle to some shopping and people will stop me, as if I', Uncle Eric it's fabulous!"
15th, at 7.30pm. Tickets (priced at £16 [Monday & Tuesday] and £18, £19.50 & £21 [Wednesday-Saturday]) are available from the New Vic's Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online at www.newvictheatre. org.uk Discounts of £2 are offered for groups of ten or more (Wednesday-Saturday; top two price-bands only) - plus a FREE bottle of champagne for every group of ten or more!

The Appeal is the Legion's biggest fundraising campaign, and is most obvious to the public when lapel-poppies are available from the last week of October until Remembrance Sunday (which, in 2012, actually falls on November 11th). 2011's Poppy Appeal smashed all previous records to raise a staggering £38 million (up from £37 million in 2010), showing the nation's heartfelt support for its brave Armed Forces.

The number of poppies distributed during the Poppy Appeal 2011 rose by half-a-million to 45.5 million, not including wreaths and other Poppy items.

Said the Legion's Director of Fundraising, Russell Thompson OBE: "Supporting the Poppy Appeal is the nation's way of showing its gratitude for the incredible commitment and sacrifice shown by our serving and ex-Service people in conflicts past and present.
"Each year, we are humbled by the overwhelming amount of money raised during the Poppy Appeal, which funds lifesaving projects in support of our Armed Forces. "These include £50 million towards the Battle Back Challenge Centre and four Personnel Recovery Centres in the UK to help wounded, injured and sick Service personnel in their recovery; £8 million towards a blast injury research centre at Imperial College, London; and a new, state-of-the-art cinema and entertainment centre with MediCinema at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC),

How the Poppy Appeal began REMEMBRANCE Sunday, November 11th, 2012, marks the 94th anniversary of the Armistice which ended World War I (1914-18). It was three years after 1918 that the very first Poppy Day was held in Britain in 1921, and, since then, it has proved an essential feature of the British way of life, following those post-World War I days. Poppy Appeal staff and volunteers arrange the annual collection each October/ November - a national event which is familiar to shoppers throughout the High Streets across the length and breadth of the land!

Howson recognised that the making of artificial poppies might offer opportunities for the Disabled Society, and he put proposals to the newly-created British Legion.
Only one other living thing survived - the Poppy! Flowering each year with the coming of warm weather, the Poppy brought life, hope, colour and reassurance to those still fighting. In Britain, Major George Howson (a young infantry officer who had been decorated for bravery) was also deeply moved by the

Coping with Sagging, Wrinkling and Dry Eyes (without a second mortgage) OUR canine friends age, just as we do, and, when this happens, wrinkles get more wrinkled and things sag and, then, become a bit dry. Sagging, dry eyes often need a tweak, nip-and-tuck, as well as corrective therapy for a lack of fluid-production, WRITES CLIVE CURRY. A dog does not spend a great deal of time looking in a mirror and wishing that time could go backwards, but it can suffer considerable pain and discomfort from chronic skin-infections and secondary, conjunctival disease associated with hair contact with the cornea. Dermal fold disease - particularly around the face and eyes, but also in other places - can be very painful and uncomfortable. We regularly perform corrective surgeries to make these patients look better, as well as feel better: it's one of our favourite surgeries. Dry eyes in middle-aged, adult dogs are still proving to be a common problem. At the present time, we remain in full production of our own 2% ciclosprin drops; this cottage industry product would appear to have a much better response-rate than the 10-20-times-weaker licensed product. We can also make the drops at a cost of £12.50 per month's treatment, instead of the licensed ointment at £65 per very small tube - a serious consideration for un-insured people. It is still important to monitor the response to treatment, initially by checking up on the tear-production at least until everyone's happy tear-production is as it should be. firstname.lastname@example.org
