h i t a f t e r h i t f ro m t h e c o lo u r f u l , o u t r ag e o u s 1980 s !! THE 1980s are back in fashion, and, if you're a lover of that decade's music, Baddeley Green Workingmen's Club is hosting just the show for you on Friday, April 20th!

Featuring a fantastic lights show (and presented by Scott Mackenzie Associates), the 'That'll Be The Day' of the '80s offers 70 minutes of all the outrageous fashions and musical styles from one, dynamic decade, ranging from the UK's New Romantics (Spandau Ballet) to American ArtHouse (Blondie).

'Welcome To The Pleasuredome' is a fast-paced, 'high-energy' show, which pays tribute to an entire decade, featuring smash-hits from the stars who shone in - yes, the '80s. This sparkling presentation, featuring fabulous showband, 'The '80s Experience', brings together LIVE onstage' all that was the best from this great musical era (no less than fifteen, separate artist-tributes, giving you hit after hit, exactly as you remember them!).

Tickets for 'Welcome To The Pleasuredome' are priced at just ÂŁ6, and are available from the Leek New Road venue on (01782) 541246 or by telephoning Ant Munday on (01782) 570603/07743-876421.

Returning Ricky will receive a 'Royle' welcome

In 2001, he starred in the movie, 'Mike Bassett: England Manager', which led, four years later, to the TV series, 'Mike Bassett: Manager'. Born Eric Tomlinson in September, 1939, Ricky also had important roles in two of Ken Loach's films, 'Riff-Raff' (1990) and 'Raining Stones' (1993).

YOU'VE viewed him on television and on the 'Big Screen', and you can see Ricky Tomlinson 'in the flesh' at a Stoke-on-Trent venue soon!

On Friday, May 4th, he will be appearing in 'A Night with Ricky Tomlinson' (alongside brilliant comedian, Gary Skyner) at Baddeley Green Workingmen's Club on Friday, May 4th, making a welcome return to the venue, following his 'sold-out' performance in April, 2011.

These days, he is bestknown as the 'Sultan of Sloth', lovable 'couchpotato', Jim Royle, in 'The Royle Family'; however, his off-screen life has been far more interesting. In addition to being an award-winning actor, Ricky's CV includes being a plasterer, banjo-player, comic, union agitator, political activist and an unwilling guest of Her Majesty's Prison Service.

Please note: the club emphasises that anyone offended by bad language should NOT attend this event! Tickets for 'A Night with Ricky Tomlinson' cost ÂŁ15, and are available from the Leek New Road club on (01782) 541246 or by telephoning Ant Munday on (01782) 570603/07743-876421 or emailing antmunday@ntlworld.com

Respected for his honesty, wit and integrity, his first TV role was in Alan Bleasdale's acclaimed 'Boys from the Blackstuff' in 1982, and he also appeared as Bobby Grant in 'Brookside' (1982-88), played DCI Charlie Wise in 'Cracker' (1994-96) and portrayed John Glover, father of Hillsborough stadium disaster victim, Ian Glover, in 'Hillsborough' (1996).

'Blue Riband' accolade

ELEVEN pubs in North and Mid-Staffordshire are designated 'Blue Riband Inns of Excellence' by award-winning, Stoke-onTrent-based Titanic Brewery. The nonet of venues are The Bell and The Star Inn, both in Eccleshall; The Huntsman, Cheadle; The Jervis Arms at Onecote, near Leek; Top Pub, Brown Edge; The Manifold Inn, Hartington, near Buxton; The Wellington Inn and Den Engel, both at Leek; The Marquis of Granby, in Ipstones; The Fox and Goose, at Foxt; and The Mill at Worston, near Great Bridgeford, Stafford. "We want to reward pubs which are both loyal customers of the brewery and consistently show high standards of service," explained Titanic director, Dave Bott.

New accolade for historic hostelry

THURSDAY, March 1st, was a very satisfying day for Geoff Holland, long-serving licensee of The Hollybush Inn, in the village of Salt, just four miles from Stafford. For, it was on that date that Geoff received the 'Pub of the Month' trophy and certificate for March, 2012, from Neil Butler, Chairman of Heart of Staffordshire CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). Renowned for the excellence of its food and ales, The Hollybush Inn (as part of Admiral Taverns) offers the widest-possible selection, with beers sourced from the SIBA Local Scheme. Beers from Titanic and Lymestone feature regularly, and a brew from a women's cooperative, Off-Beat Brewery, has also been enthusiastically. Sunday sessions at Bramshall received Last year, Geoff organised a beer festival, LOVERS of folk and acoustic music should when 18 ales and two ciders were on-sale head for The Bramshall Inn, Stone Road, and all sold-out by Saturday night. Bramshall (near Uttoxeter), each Sunday He is planning a summer festival for 2012, from 9pm. and hopes to offer two events each year. Thought to date from 1190 (the second year of Richard I's reign), The Hollybush Inn is purported to be the second-oldest licensed pub in the country, although the records only go back to 1834.

FAMOUS, early-17th century pub, The White Lion at Barthomley, has received a prestigious accolade. For, the historic, South Cheshire hostelry (dating from 1614) has been named as one of the ten most interesting and architecturally important ale houses in Britain. The tourism website, visitbritain.com, lists the Audley Road inn alongside renowned venues in the main cities of London, Liverpool and Edinburgh. "The winner of the Good Pub Guide's 'Unspoilt Pub of the Year' Award, The White Lion has a fantastic Tudor interior with low beams, a thatched roof and latticed windows," enthuses the website. "Barthomley is a charming village and, from the pub garden, you can take in views of the early-15th century Church of St. Bertoline." The church is (reputedly) the site of a notorious massacre of local people by Royalist troops during the English Civil War.

April offers more attractions than ever!!

featuring ingenious alcoves, smart furnishings in traditional colours and an array of historic, framed pictures, relating to (needless say) S.S. Titanic, plus, during the Winter months, a warming fire. For discerning diners, the kitchen (complete with 'dumb waiter') serves up a fine choice of freshly-prepared food, ranging from hot and cold sandwiches, filled oatcakes, salads, breakfasts, ' Hot and Hearty' meals, 'George's pies' and desserts to 'Evening Specials' (Wednesday Turkish fare and Friday Grills), plus excellent Sunday lunches. Additionally, The White Star boasts a good wine-list to complement the excellence of the culinary fare. Pam also offers a veritable myriad of weekly attractions, including Beer and Pint Nights on Monday and Tuesday (plus a popular Quiz Evening each Tuesday), an Acoustic Night with Leroy Legrand (Wednesday) and an Orange Bicycle '60s/'70s Disco every Saturday. Live entertainment also features on the last Tuesday of each month, with the pub's 'Folk Singaround'. Readers ascending the Stoke building's grand staircase will discover its own fullyself-contained function room (furnished to a premier standard), complete with bar (lined with gleaming hand-pumps) and toilet-facilities, ensuring separate attention for your social occasion.

THERE'S always something going on at this Stoke-upon-Trent town centre pub; however, it's 'full steam ahead' for 'mine host', Pam Rowlands, and her team who are offering a couple of 'extra-special' attractions during April! Not only can 'real ale' aficionados quaff a host of superbly-kept, traditional, caskconditioned brews at The White Star's own Beer Festival during Easter weekend (it runs from Thursday, April 5th, to Monday, April 9th), but the following week sees the venue marking an iconic centenary in apposite style. The pub (located on Kingsway, adjacent to the King's Hall) takes its name from the White Star Line, which owned the famous, transatlantic liner, S.S. Titanic liner (captained by Hanley's own Captain Smith, of course), and is part of award-winning, local Titanic Brewery's 'fleet' of retail outlets. Accordingly, it is offering a lunchtime and evening menu, featuring special dishes which appeared on the ill-fated liner's own menu, from Tuesday, April 10th, to Sunday, April 15th (the date upon which the great ship went to a well-chronicled, watery grave in 1912). Lovers of 'cask-beers' always have a great choice of ten brews on offer, with five Titanic products (including four 'regulars'), a quartet of consistently-changing 'guests', and (also a 'permanent fixture') Everards Tiger (the Leicestershire brewery owns the pub, via its deal with Titanic) - all to be enjoyed within the venue's friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The pub's four, regular brews from Burslembased Titanic are Steerage (ABV 3.5%, a refreshing, clean-drinking, hoppy, golden 'session-bitter'), Iceberg (ABV 4.1%, with a combination of Maris Otter pale malt & fine wheat malt providing a real zest), Anchor (ABV 4.1%, an impressive, russet-gold beer with a strong, fruity aroma) and, naturally, its White Star (ABV 4.8%, a light, refreshing, distinctlyhoppy beer with a freshness that belies its strength). And complementing this superb quartet is Everards Tiger (ABV 4.2%, a true, award-winning best bitter with universal appeal and a perfect balance between bitterness & sweetness, with crystal malt giving the beer its rounded, toffee character), the brewery's best-seller. But, there will be an even greater variety of quaffing bliss on offer during April's Beer Festival! "We shall have twelve, different, additional 'guests', plus four or five traditional ciders and a perry," said Pam, who has been 'at the helm' of The White Star, since it was 'launched' as a Titanic outlet on May 9th, 2008, having been licensee at The Greyhound, in nearby Penkhull, for the previous, ten years. The Stoke pub's ultra-smart, striking, modern interior comprises a huge, open-plan area,

Wedding Guide National award nomination enhances Tracy's treasured reputation!! "IF you're looking for outstanding, friendly customer-service, then look no further than Cherish Bridal: Tracy and her team come highly recommended on all scales." "Cherish Bridal offers outstanding service with a relaxed atmosphere....Tracy and her team are fantastic....Tracy was like my fairy-godmother; she found me a dress that made me feel like a film star....I would recommend Cherish Bridal to every future bride." These glowing testimonials (from, respectively Hayley Louise Flood and Emma Lishman) are just two of myriad of solidgold endorsements of Tracy Hollinshead's Cheshire-based business - you'll find them all on her website: www.cherishbridal.co.uk They also explain why sole proprietor, Tracy, has been short-listed for the 'Bridal Wear' section of the '2011 Wedding Supplier Awards' run by the prestigious publication, The Bridal Magazine. "We have a one-in-five chance of winning, and we'll find out during the fabulous awards ceremony, which is being held at Isla Gladstone Conservatory, in Liverpool, on Wednesday, April 18th," explained a delighted Tracy. Presenting the awards on the evening will be The Bridal Magazine's Regional Manager, Sarah Marks, who said: "The Isla Gladstone Conservatory is a most gorgeous, absolutely stunning venue, having benefited from part of the ÂŁ25 million spent on restoring Liverpool's Stanley Park to its former glory. "The awards ceremony is going to be a celebration of the skills of 300 wedding professionals from around the country, and all those who have made the final five contestants for each section can be especially proud, since they were actually voted there by brides and our readers who took the time out to say how fantastic they think the businesses are! "Voting took place from March, 2011, ending on December 29th; we, then, reopened the voting-procedure for just a week earlier this year, to obtain the shortlist. "We are holding the awards ceremony at a midweek date by way of a party for

wedding professionals, who are, of course, always very busy at weekends," added Sarah. The awards now form an annual event for The Bridal Magazine, which, as the country's biggest online wedding magazine, recently took the step of becoming a printpublication, following the massive demand from consumers. Genuinely living up to its full name (Cherish Bridal Exquisite Gowns and Accessories), the Northwich store offers a stunning collection of wedding gowns, bridesmaids' dresses, 'prom' gowns, evening wear and accessories to fulfil every bride's dream. So, whatever your venue or budget, readers are assured of a finding a gown which will complement your 'Big Day' to perfection! Tracy brings her ten years' experience within the business to offer each client firstclass, friendly, personal service - a winning combination which means that each brideto-be enjoys the unforgettable excitement of finding that 'special' gown in a stress-free atmosphere! And, to complete your look, the shop boasts a beautiful collection of veils, shoes, tiaras and bridal lingerie, especially designed to enhance your dream wedding gown and also complete your bridesmaids' outfits, so that they, too, look gorgeous! A NEW ADDITION TO THE STORE IS THE BELLA ROSA MOTHER OF THE BRIDE/GROOM RANGE. If you would like a 'one-to-one' consultation or have any questions, telephone Tracy and her team on (01606) 351900 or email them at cherishbridal@ yahoo.co.uk "We shall be happy to arrange an appointment for a suitable time," said Tracy, adding: "Interest-free payments are available." Located at 123-125, Middlewich Road, Northwich, Cherish Bridal is open five days a week (Monday-Tuesday & ThursdaySaturday) between 10am and 5pm (afterhours appointments can be arranged, if required). 18

Wedding Guide Ultra-stylish 'transports of delight' from Andrew & Janet!! THE ability to arrive - and depart - in real, chauffeur-driven style is an integral part of a successful wedding day for every couple. Readers can achieve exactly this by contacting the family-owned-andrun, Cheshire-based business known appositely as Andrews Austins, thanks to the experience and enthusiasm of coproprietors, Andrew and Janet Warner! Since the launch of their business twelve years ago, they have earned a nonpareil reputation for providing clients with a friendly, personal service for not only weddings, but also anniversaries, special occasions and school 'proms' throughout the neighbouring counties of Cheshire and Staffordshire. Janet and Andrew stress that both of their cars are GENUINE vintage cars

- magnificent Austins, dating from the 1930s and resplendent in burgundy and black. The cars are very spacious inside, and their traditional design, featuring large doors and 'step-up' running-boards, allows easy access for all. Nothing is too much trouble for Andrew and Janet, and readers can view their vehicles at any time (and with no obligation to hire). They book only one wedding per day, and personally attend each occasion themselves to ensure that everything goes smoothly and that you receive the highest-possible standard of service. And, as an additional bonus for weddings, complimentary champagne for the bride and bridegroom is served.

local events run across Britain, from vets' practices to pet shops, and in schools and by charities. 2011 was another, great year for NPM, which (sponsored by Royal Canin and Companion Care) saw nearly 16,500 people visit its website during the run-up to, and during the month, looking at 57,000 pages, with over 3,600 of them registered as supporters.

NATIONAL Pet Month 2012 runs from Saturday, April 7th, to Monday, May 2nd. During this period of 31 days, thousands of people up and down the country will be celebrating life with their pets, spreading the word on responsible pet-ownership or raising money for their favourite charity in fun-filled events! Why not be a part of this of this?

these events will raise funds for local charities, National Pet Month is not just about fund-raising.

A photographic competition (called 'Pets in Love') was run in conjunction with 'Your Cat and Your Dog' magazine, and The 'Pet Nose Day' schools art competition encouraged children to get in touch with their creative side and make a mask of their favourite pet.

It is also about raising awareness of how pets make people's lives happier and healthier, and how we can repay the pets which we love by looking after them responsibly. Details of how to join in and become a supporter - whether by setting up an event yourself, by entering one of the National Pet Month competitions, or to see what's happening in your area - are on NPM's own website: www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk

Let a reputable garage give your vehicle a thorough 'once-over'

ACORN GARAGE MOT Testing • Servicing • Engine Diagnostic • Brakes • Air Conditioning • Exhausts • Clutches

WITH Easter imminent, readers will, doubtless, be considering the problems posed by holiday-motoring. Nevertheless, you must NOT make the mistake of taking any 'short-cuts' in terms of ensuring that your vehicle is fully primed to meet the demands of this (frequently) onerous task. Accordingly, it makes nothing but good sense to give your vehicle a thorough check-up at a reputable garage (excellent examples of which can be found in this feature!). All the vital components of a correctlyfunctioning vehicle - brakes, engine, exhaust, steering and, of course, tyres - should be thoroughly vetted by an expert mechanic at a bona fide business.

W h e r e H a v e I B e e n A ll M y L i f e ? NEWCASTLE'S New Vic Theatre is putting the voices of Potteries people on stage to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a ground-breaking documentary by one of the country's hottest writing talents.

Created especially for the New Vic, the pioneering home of theatre documentary, 'Where Have I Been All My Life?' by Alecky Blythe explores hopes and dreams in North Staffordshire. Said New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins: "For half-a-century, we have been putting the voices of local people on stage here; so, for the 50th anniversary, we have something very special lined up with a new documentary. "At the heart of this story is the community of the Potteries, a Cinderella desperately hoping a fairy godmother will come along." OLIVER J. Hembrough as Brian: photo by Andrew Billington.

Blythe, whose verbatim production, 'London Road', went down a storm at the National Theatre last year, visited this area in 2010, and interviewed Stoke City footballers, pottery-workers and schoolchildren, before settling on talent contest, 'Stoke's Top Talent', as her subject. Audience-members will be able to show off their own talents with perennially-popular karaoke in the New Vic bar before performances.

Added Theresa Heskins: "The Vic documentaries of the past were about working lives, about industry and solidarity. "The comparison with this new piece, where fifteen minutes of fame is what the characters aspire to, saddened me at first, but, as I worked on it, I began to realise that it's a play about regeneration and hope." 'Where Have I Been All My Life?'runs from Saturday, April 7th, to Saturday, April 28th, at 7.30pm, with 2.15pm matinee performances on April 21st and 28th.
