Welcome to the 2019 Clunes Booktown Festival. The festival has grown into one of the Shire’s major events. Clunes is now recognised as an international Booktown, and the festival attracts thousands of visitors from near and far. This celebration of books and reading turns the picturesque township of Clunes into a thriving hub of conversations and ideas. There’s something to see and experience at the festival, regardless of your age.

I am very pleased to welcome all attending Clunes Booktown 2019.

Welcome to Clunes Booktown 2019. For this weekend Clunes is the place to be for booklovers across Australia.

Council is a proud supporter of the festival, providing funding and operational support such as traffic management, visitor services and waste management.

Booktown belongs to the people of Clunes, many of whom generously volunteer their time and talents in its cause. But it also belongs to a wider audience, to all those who not only love books and writing but who delight in hunting down their wants list and finding that fugitive volume.

This weekend, we have a great range of book dealers and we welcome you to a mind-refreshing program of writers and thinkers who will stimulate your thinking and challenge your sense of what contemporary literature, in all its forms, might be.

May I take this opportunity to thank the booksellers and dealers who provide our reason for staging this weekend, to the authors and writers who have contributed to a challenging literary program and most particularly to our sponsors, whose support can be the difference between a good Booktown and a great one.

FROM THE PROGRAM DEVELOPER Welcome to the picturesque town of Clunes. Over the two days of our Festival we invite you to meet, hear and converse with some of our most treasured Australian authors.

We are sure that no matter which Author session or Panel you choose to join, your curiosity will be piqued, your senses revitalised and your love of reading confirmed. Our Festival authors are inspiring thinkers; each and every one has committed time to consider, and create. The Clunes Booktown Festival is a celebration of books, ideas, collecting, writing, gathering together and reading. It is also a celebration of a beautiful town and a special rural community.

A BRIEF HISTORY In 2007 four local residents, Linda Newitt, Graeme Johnstone, Tim Hayes and Tess Brady, consulted Clunes locals about a plan to encourage tourism. The town embraced the idea. With only four months and a tiny budget, the first festival, Booktown for a Day, was held on May 20.

There are four big reasons to try number five.

Over 50 booksellers set up shop. Almost half the residents volunteered to help. It was a wet, windy day, crowds were huge, and the town ran out food, money and electricity, but not good will.

Creative Clunes Inc formed and the first two-day festival was held in 2008. In 2012 Clunes became the first southern hemisphere member of the International Organisation of Booktowns.

From 2013 to 2015 Clunes and Paju Bookcity, South Korea collaborated on photographic exhibitions in Paju, Seoul, Clunes and Sydney. In 2014 Clunes Booktown was the major Australian example in the OECD report, Tourism and the Creative Economy.

Over the years members of Creative Clunes have visited Booktowns in South Korea, New Zealand, Scotland, Norway and Switzerland, and in 2018 hosted the International Organisation of Booktowns Conference. The annual festival now attracts over 15,000 visitors and is a major contributor to the economic development of regional Victoria.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS AAG REAL ESTATE OFFICE Built in 1870 by Thomas Jones, the building has seen many tenants since Joseph Oldham ran it as a hairdressing salon.

TOWN HALL Designed by the architect Percy Oakden, the building was opened in 1873 by the Governor Sir George Bowen.

Later in the 1870s, the Supper Room, previously known as the Bible Christian Church, was relocated from Fraser Street. This building is used extensively by the Clunes community.

RSL The ES&A Bank was designed

by Melbourne architect Leonard Terry (1825-1884). Completed

in 1871, it is typical of Terry’s conservative Renaissance Revival style.

The bank is one of three in Fraser Street. They form a landmark in the precinct. The property was used as a private residence when the bank closed in the 1930s. It was purchased by the RSL in 1954.

BOOKTOWN KIDS' VILLAGE There’s lots to entertain and engage young people right throughout the festival this year – including roving performers, dedicated YA author talks, bands-galore, and of course books! But if you’re young or have young ones in tow, you’ll also want to swing by our Kids’ Village for some great performances and hands-on activities for all-ages.

Our beautiful Studio is based in Fitzroy North and free trials are available for children interested in our creative writing clubs. STOPWATCH Magic Show with Mime and Magician Get ready to be mystified as Stopwatch mesmerizes with his sleight-of-hand trickery and masterful illusions. A fun and captivating show for all ages.

Stopwatch Mime and Magician has been performing as a magician since 2010, at parties, festivals, and company functions.

Recently winning the "2018 Best Street Performance" award in the Ballarat Busking Championships, he is hoping to make a career out of making people smile.

GABRIELLE WANG Writing and Illustration Workshop with Author and Illustrator Gabrielle Wang will conduct a writing and illustration workshop for kids ages 8-12. Have fun drawing dragons and writing from your imaginations.

HEROES Dress-up Photo Wall Dress up as your favourite book hero and take your photo in front of our amazing intergalactic backdrop. Don’t forget to hashtag us so we can see your great photos. #clunesbooktown The Heroes Journey Dress-up Parade Come dressed as one of your favourite heroes from a book and be a part of a procession of super-saviours fighting for justice or just a little change in the world.

The parade will be helped along with music, fanfare and acrobatic antics. Spot-prizes for costumes will be awarded at the end of the parade.

STRAW BALE MAZE The Maze has become an attraction in itself at the Festival. It uses 300 bales and is constructed over three hours with the help of students from Wesley along with other locals. Marion Anderson creates a different design for the maze each year.

JACQUES The French Waiter Serving up a delicious blend of comedy and circus, Jacques The French Waiter is at your service.

He performs delightful high skills that you would expect from the French. Juggling manipulation of everyday objects such as bottles, trays, cups and saucers that will impress.

PETANQUE STAGE - FRASER STREET

ENTERTAINERS PAUL WOOKEY AND PHILOMENA CARROLL Paul and Philomena perform a great range of traditional music, blues, bluegrass, old-time country, originals and more. Expect songs and tunes of the deep south and the old west, served up with reverence for the music and a lively wit.

WESLEY COLLEGE MUSIC Students from Wesley College’s Elsternwick campus have provided a feast of musical delights at the Clunes Booktown Festival for several years now. This year, Elsternwick’s Concert Band, String Orchestra, Suzuki Violins and Big Band will entertain from 1.00pm – 3.30pm on the Petanque Stage, with a range of musical favourites ranging from traditional melodies, to toe-tapping jazz. Students at Elsternwick range in age from 3 year olds through to Year 9.

THE DAYLESFORD COMMUNITY BRASS BAND The Daylesford Community Brass Band provides musical entertainment and education at a wide variety of events across the Hepburn Shire.

CRESWICK BRASS BAND Creswick Brass Band is a community band made up of local residents. Known as 'The Happy Band of the Central Highlands', we love to perform at local events, including Booktown!

WHIZBANG ORCHESTRA Whizbang are a 15 piece totally original big band incorporating a variety of genres from funk to reggae, featuring an 8 piece horn section. Whizbang has been in existence since 2000 and has produced 9 albums.

The Band has achieved international exposure through chart success in Canada and had published academic articles in the UK. Whizbang performs regularly at festivals, community events and school functions.

An eccentric Bohemian princess who wanders through the crowd creating personalised poems for people on the spot – lovers poems, name poems, poems about people’s favourite things…and so much more! Paloma reaches deep into people’s hearts and minds and weaves her wordsmithery with humour and love, putting a smile on the faces of adults and children alike. Being a professional spoken word artist and comic improviser, Amy Bodossian has years of experience in wordplay, making each exchange an uniquely intimate, rich and rewarding one.

THE MERCURYS Take a break from the books and head on down to Collins Place for The Mercurys. Tamworth Golden Guitar winner Paul Wookey's latest project plays homage to those great rock and roll songs of the 50s. Paul, along with bassist Darryl Weckert and Neil Newitt on drums, perform songs made famous by the greats from the Rock and Roll era - Eddie Cochrane, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Elvis and more. Add in some great blues and you'll be dancing in the streets.

FED UNI WORD OF MOUTH Word of Mouth – Ariel Songs Music by Rick Chew Text by William Shakespeare, adapted from The Tempest.

Music features prominently in Shakespeare’s final play, The Tempest (1611). The character Ariel – an ‘airy spirit’ – is a conduit to another dimension, where magic intervenes and influences the course of events in the physical world.

This devised performance, developed by Associate Professor Kim Durban, Dr Angela Campbell and Arts Academy Director, Rick Chew features current students from the Arts Academy’s renowned Performing Arts programs.

Word of Mouth perform a wide repertoire of music, including arrangements of new works written specifically for the ensemble. Word of Mouth is like a big band of voices, freewheeling between contemporary classical, jazz, music theatre and choral theatre.

AUTHOR & PRESENTER PROFILES

JOHN ARNOLD is a regular presenter at the Clunes Booktown Festivals. He has worked as a librarian, academic and bookseller and has published widely on Australian and British publishing history. He has recently edited a selection of the poetry of Elza de Locre entitled How May I Endure, which will be launched at this year's festival.

ROBBIE ARNOTT was born in Launceston in 1989. His writing has appeared in Island, the Lifted Brow, Kill Your Darlings and the 2017 anthology Seven Stories. He won the 2015 Tasmanian Young Writers’ Fellowship and the 2014 Scribe Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers. Robbie lives in Hobart and is an advertising copywriter.

Flames was shortlisted for the 2018 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction.

KAT AVERY works at the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History at Federation University Australia. In 2015 she graduated from her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) at Deakin University where she was the recipient of the Renee Erdos Memorial Prize. DR ANNE BEGGS-SUNTER is an historian in the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History at Federation University Ballarat. Her academic interests are in Australian social, cultural and political history. Her special interests relate to Ballarat and its heritage conservation, and the significance of the Eureka Stockade.

DANIELLE BINKS is an editor, book blogger, literary agent and youth literature advocate.

She edited and contributed to Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYA Anthology, a collection of new Australian young adult writing by some of Australia’s favourite YA authors and inspired by the grassroots #LoveOzYA movement, which is currently shortlisted in the Inky Awards.

TONY BIRCH is the author of Ghost River, which won the 2016 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Indigenous Writing, and Blood, which was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award. He is also the author of Shadowboxing, and three short-story collections – Father's Day, The Promise and Common People. Tony is a frequent contributor to ABC local and national radio, and a regular guest at writers’ festivals.

SARAH BAILEY is a Melbourne based writer with a background in advertising and communications.

She has two young children and currently works as a director of creative projects company Mr Smith. Over the past five years she has written a number of short stories and opinion pieces. Her novels include The Dark Lake and Into the Night.

ROGER BEESTON worked on the Clunes Former Free Lending Library conservation project funded by the Hugh D Williamson Foundation. Throughout his career Roger has continually engaged with the fields of both contemporary architecture and heritage management. In doing so, he has developed authentic and sustainable remedial conservation interventions.

PROFESSOR FRANK BONGIORNO is Head of the School of History, at the Australian National University.

His most recent books are The Eighties: The Decade That Transformed Australia (2015), which won ACT Book of the Year, and (edited with Benjamin T. Jones and John Uhr), Elections Matter: Ten Federal Elections That Shaped Australia (2018).

KIRSTEN BRADLEY & NICK RITAR left the city to start a small farm called Milkwood 10 years ago, with a dream of living simply.

Since then, they’ve been growing food, cultivating community and sharing skills wherever they’ve lived or travelled. Kirsten and Nick are passionate about re-skilling households and communities to create resilient, low-impact and positive futures that are accessible to all.

ANNE BUIST is the Chair of Women’s Mental Health at the University of Melbourne. Medea’s Curse was her first psychological thriller, published in UK in 2016.

The second, Dangerous to Know, was released the same year. This I Would Kill For was published in 2018 Two Steps Forward, cowritten with Graeme Simsion, was released in 2017.

EMMA BUSOWSKY COX is a curator and writer with specialisation in Australian art and museums. Currently employed as Curator, City History and Collections at Bendigo Art Gallery, Emma has 15 years’ experience working in the art museum sector in curatorial and programming capacities, including roles at Castlemaine Art Museum, Deakin University and the National Gallery of Victoria.

PAUL DAFFEY is an Australian sports journalist. In 2001, Daffey wrote Local Rites: A year in Grass Roots Football in Victoria and Beyond. In 2013, Daffey and John Harms co-edited Footy Town Stories of Australia's Game, a book about regional Australian football clubs and culture. He is based in Melbourne.

JANE CARO is an author, novelist, journalist, broadcaster, columnist, advertising writer and social commentator. Her books include Accidental Feminists (2019) young adult novels Just Flesh & Blood (2018), Just a Girl (2015), and Just a Queen (2011), and an edited anthology of feminist writing, Destroying the Joint (2013).

DR MELANIE CHENG is a writer and general practitioner. Born in Adelaide, she grew up in Hong Kong and lives in Melbourne. Her writing has appeared in many newspapers and magazines. Her short-story collection, Australia Day, won the 2016 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Unpublished Manuscript and went on to win the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Fiction. Her latest book is the novel, Room for a Stranger.

DAN EDDY is the author and coauthor of 11 books including King Richard, Larrikins & Legends, Always Striving and The Norm Smith Medallists. He has a Master of Arts degree (Victoria University, 2013) and recently submitted his PhD (Federation University) for review. An oral historian with a passion for sports history, Eddy is one of Australia's most prolific non-fiction writers. He lives in Leongatha.

ROB (ROBBIE) EGAN is CEO of the Australian Booksellers Association. Prior to this he was operations manager at Readings, Australia’s leading independent bookseller. Rob’s background is in creative writing and he is a keen reader and advocate of Australian literature.

DR ROGER CLARKE is the Collection Development Librarian at Federation University Australia.

Previously he has worked at Victoria, Swinburne and Monash Universities, and at the State Library of Victoria, in purchasing and collection management. One of a family of bibliophiles, he has a large personal collection of books, concentrating on Australian poetry, military history and exploration.

PROFESSOR ERIK EKLUND holds a chair in Australian history and is the Director of the Centre for Gippsland Studies as well as a member of the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History (CRCAH). He recently completed a term as the Keith Cameron Chair in Australian History at University College Dublin from 2015 to 2016. He is a former Professor and Head of School at Monash University.

GABRIELLA COSLOVICH is an author and freelance journalist. She worked at The Age newspaper in Melbourne for 15 years, specialising in the arts. Her Walkley-winning book of true crime, Whiteley on Trial, was published in October 2017.

As a freelancer, she writes for publications including The Age, Good Weekend magazine, and The Australian Financial Review magazine.

NATHAN CURNOW has been writing and performing for nearly 20 years. His books include No Other Life But This, The Ghost Poetry Project, RADAR, and The Right Wrong Notes, with his latest collection of poetry, The Apocalypse Awards (2016), inspired by our collective obsession with the end times.

SARAH EPSTEIN is an Australian author, illustrator and designer who grew up in suburban Sydney and now lives in Melbourne with her husband, two sons and a pup called Luna. Her debut novel Small Spaces, a YA psychological thriller, was shortlisted for The Readings Young Adult Book Prize, a finalist in the Aurealis Awards, and longlisted in the Indie Book Awards.

KIRBY FENWICK is a writer, audio producer and co-host of the podcast Literary Canon Ball.

She is also a passionate fan of women’s football, and produces a weekly segment called ‘Voices From The Stands’ for Triple R’s Kick Like A Girl AFLW show. Her audio documentary, The First Friday in February, which tells the story of the first AFLW game, won the 2018 Oral History Victoria Award.

THE HON TIM FISCHER AC was born at Lockhart on 3 May 1946, and was educated at Xavier College in Melbourne, was conscripted into the Australian Army in 1966 and served in The Vietnam War. He entered politics in 1971 and became Deputy Prime Minister in 1996, Ambassador to the Holy See in 2008 and is now a successful book author. From Jetsetters to Jesuits: Bold Bhutan Beckons is his latest book.

CLARE GERVASONI is a museum curator and former art teacher. She has authored and co-authored many books on art education, pre-1900 Italian speakers in Australasia, early European migration, Ballarat School of Mines, and aspects of early goldfields history. She contributes to a regular heritage spot on ABC Regional radio.

BARRY GILL Ballarat identity Barry Gill played with Carlton in the then VFL from 19641972 (132 games), and was a member of their 1968 and 1970 premiership-winning sides. The attacking, rugged defender played alongside some of the game's greatest ever players.

NICOLE HAYES is a co-host of the all-female AFL podcast, The Outer Sanctum. She also teaches and writes fiction, essays and scripts.

Her debut novel, The Whole of My World, published in 2013, was shortlisted for a Young Australians Best Book Award. One True Thing, her second, won the Children's Peace Literature Award. She also co-edited an anthology of footy stories, From the Outer: Footy Like You've Never Heard It, with Alicia Sometimes and co-authored A Footy Girls Guide to the Stars of 2017.

DR SARAH HAYES is an archaeologist who explores city living using discarded possessions, building remains and personal histories as evidence.

Her current research traces the material life of individuals and families in Melbourne and Bendigo during Victoria’s gold rush. She currently holds tenure at Deakin University, and is coeditor of the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology journal.

JACK HENSELEIT was born on a winter evening in 1991, just after the stroke of midnight. When the weather is dark and stormy, he writes fairy tales – real fairy tales, where witches and goblins play tricks on unwary girls and boys.

Not all of the tales have happy endings.The Witching Hours is his first series of middle-years horror novels.

MORENO GIOVANNONI was born in San Ginese but grew up in a house on a hill, on a tobacco farm at Buffalo River in northeast Victoria. He is a freelance translator of long standing. His essay 'The Percheron' was published in Southerly and selected for The Best Australian Essays in 2014. He was recipient of the prestigious Deborah Cass Prize in 2016. The Fireflies of Autumn is his first book, and was shortlisted for the 2018 Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction.

ANDREA GOLDSMITH had her first novel, Gracious Living, published in 1989. This was followed by Modern Interiors, Facing the Music, Under the Knife, and The Prosperous Thief, which was short-listed for the 2003 Miles Franklin Literary Award. Reunion was published in 2009, and The Memory Trap was awarded the 2015 Melbourne Prize. Invented Lives is her most recent novel

SHELLEY HINTON has worked across the arts in education, design and arts administration.

Her experience as an educator includes teaching in primary school, secondary, tertiary and special education. She is currently Curator for the Post Office Gallery, Federation University Australia.

DR CAROLYN HOLBROOK is the author of Anzac: The Unauthorised Biography which made the shortlist for NSW Premier's History Award 2015 in the category of Australian First World War History. She won a commemorative medal at the NSW History Awards 2015. She also won the Queensland Literary Awards 2015 in the History category.

PROFESSOR DAVID GOODMAN teaches history at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of the 1994 book Gold Seeking: Victoria and California in the 1850s and continues to have an interest in comparative gold rush history, especially in issues like: how did they think about balancing public and private good?

DR ROBYN HUNTER recently competed her PhD, a biography of Bendigo identity Ben George William Knight, in the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History at Federation University Australia. Robyn and the editorial collective started a new journal Before Now that is based in the region. Robyn and the editors are delighted to launch the first ever issue of the journal at Clunes Booktown Festival.

GRAEME JOHNSTONE departed from the Navy in 1972, completed a teaching degree and taught advanced maths and physics mainly in technical schools until 1996 when he took a package to set up a B&B in Clunes Victoria.

As well as running the B&B and teaching part time in hospitality and performing arts he has been a volunteer on community boards, an acting extra and is now looking forward to genuine retirement.

KON KARAPANAGIOTIDIS is the CEO and founder of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, the largest independent human rights organisation for refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia. His memoir, The Power of Hope is published by HarperCollins Australia.

STUART KELLS is an author and book-trade historian. His 2015 book Penguin and The Lane Brothers won the Ashurst Business Literature Prize. An authority on rare books, he has written and published on many aspects of print culture and the book world recently writing The Library: A Catalogue of Wonders.

Stuart lives in Melbourne with his family.

DAVID MCGINNISS is currently writing a history of the community organisation Child and Family Services Ballarat (CAFS), including its predecessor organisations the Ballarat Orphanage and Ballarat Children’s Homes, dating back to 1865, as part of a PhD with the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History at Federation University.

MICHAEL MCGIRR was a Jesuit for 20 years and a priest for seven. After leaving the church, he became a founding staff member of Eureka Street. He is a regular columnist and reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. He was fiction editor of Meanjin from 2001to 2005. He currently lives in Yarraville with his wife and three children. Books that Saved My Life was published in 2018.

GEORGE MEGALOGENIS is an author and journalist. The Australian Moment won both a Prime Minister's Literary Award and Walkley Award, and formed the basis for an ABC documentary series, Making Australia Great.

He is also author of Faultlines, The Longest Decade, Australia’s Second Chance, and Balancing Act. His latest book is The Football Solution.

PROFESSOR MARILYN LAKE is a historian known for work on the military and war in Australian civil society, the political history of Australian women and Australian racism including the White Australia Policy and the movement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander human rights. She has held academic positions at Monash, La Trobe, Harvard and Melbourne Universities and authored numerous prize-winning books.

KIRSTYN MCDERMOTT writes horror fiction. Her first book is Madigan Mine. She was born in Newcastle. After completing a BA at Newcastle University, she moved to Melbourne. Her writing has been recognised with Aurealis, Ditmar and Chronos awards, as well as publication in literary and genre journals including Island, Southerly and GUD.

DR BEN MOUNTFORD is Senior Lecturer in History at the Australian Catholic University. He is the author of Britain, China, & Colonial Australia (2016) and co-editor of Fighting Words: Fifteen Books That Shaped the Postcolonial World (2017) and A Global History of Gold Rushes (2018).

PADDY O’REILLY is the author of three novels, two collections of award-winning short stories, and a novella. Her novels have been shortlisted for major awards, and her stories have been widely published, anthologised and broadcast in Australia and overseas. Peripheral Vision is her latest collection of short stories.

JOSH POMARE is an award winning writer who has had work published in journals including Meanjin, Kill Your Darlings, Takahe and Mascara Literary Review. He has hosted the On Writing podcast since 2015 featuring bestselling authors from around the globe. He was born in New Zealand and resides in Melbourne with his wife. Call Me Evie is his first novel.

DR MEGAN PONSFORD is a historian, author and cricketing devotee. Megan worked as a research officer at Monash University and completed her PhD at Federation University Australia.

She is the author Home Ground (Hardie Grant, 2003) and number of other publications. In 2013 she was an A.G.L Shaw fellow at the State Library of Victoria.

ALICE PUNG is an award-winning writer, editor, teacher and lawyer based in Melbourne. She is the bestselling author of Unpolished Gem and Her Father’s Daughter and the editor of the anthologies Growing Up Asian in Australia and My First Lesson. Her first novel, Laurinda, won the Ethel Turner Prize at the 2016 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. Her most recent book is Close to Home (2018).

MICHAEL ROWE grew up in Clunes and joined the fire brigade at a young age. In 1989 he moved to Cape Clear, where he has been Captain since 2010.

Over the past few years he has brought roadside burning to a new level by devising a plan that allows both sides of the road to be burnt simultaneously and safely.

JOCK SERONG is the author of Quota, winner of the 2015 Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction; The Rules of Backyard Cricket, was shortlisted for the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Award for Fiction, plus a finalist for the 2017 MWA Edgar Awards for Best Paperback Original, and finalist for the 2017 INDIES Adult Mystery Book of the Year; On the Java Ridge, was shortlisted for the 2018 Indie Awards. His most recent novel, Preservation has won the 2018 Staunch Prize.

PROFESSOR KEIR REEVES holds a research chair at Federation University Australia and is the foundation director of the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History (CRCAH).

His recent publications include Heritage and Memory of War: Responses from Small Islands.

He co-convened the highly successful AHA 2016 Conference From Boom to Bust through CRCAH in Ballarat.

ALICIA SOMETIMES is an Australian writer, poet and broadcaster. She was a 2014 Fellow at the State Library of Victoria and was writer and director of the science-poetry show, Elemental. Her most recent show Particle/Wave, featured in the Melbourne Festival 2018. She has written two poetry collections, kissing the curve and Soundtrack.

She is the co-editor with Nicole Hayes of From the Outer and coauthor of A Footy Girls Guide.

GEORGINA REID is editor and creative director of The Planthunter – a unique, irreverent and thoughtful website celebrating connections between people and plants. She is also a columnist for The Design Files and Country Style magazine. Her new book also takes the name of The Planthunter.

GABRIELLE WANG is an author and illustrator born in Melbourne of Chinese heritage. She has written many books and won many awards. The Beast of Hushing Wood, for middle readers, came out in 2017 and her latest book is the sequel to the award-winning A Ghost in my Suitcase which was adapted for a theatre production for the 2019 Sydney Festival. Her new book is called Ting Ting the Ghosthunter.

PETER ROSE is the Editor and CEO of Australian Book Review.

His books include a family memoir, Rose Boys (2001), which won the National Biography Award in 2003. He has published two novels and six poetry collections, most recently The Subject of Feeling (UWA Publishing, 2015).

ERIN WILLIAMS is an architectural historian based at RBA. She worked closely on writing the report for the Clunes Former Free Lending Library conservation project funded by the Hugh D Williamson Foundation. She has also worked on a number of goldfields heritage projects including thematic histories of key towns throughout the region.

GRAEME WILLIAMS is a retired architect and building surveyor with an abiding interest in the visual arts and Melbourne’s cultural history both as a collector, curator and organiser of an art discussion series.

Clunes Artists' Group Clunes Artists’ Group will be exhibiting in the Foyer of the Warehouse for the 2019 Booktown Festival. Take a break from book hunting and relax browsing the work of this talented group. The theme is Clunes, its buildings and landscapes. As well as the individual pieces of art, both 2D and 3D, the group project for the year will be displayed.

The group project is a wooden tiled mural of the Town Hall. The mural consists of 20 tiles.

CLUNES BOOKTOWN FESTIVAL CLUNES BOOKTOWN FESTIVAL is a Creative Clunes Inc initiative.

We are a member of the International Organisation of Booktowns.

A book town is a small rural town or village in which second–hand and antiquarian bookshops are concentrated. Most Booktowns have developed in villages of historic interest or of scenic beauty. The concept was initiated

by Richard Booth of Hay–on–Wye in Wales.

The Booktown offers an exemplary model of sustainable rural development and tourism. It is one of the most successful new tourism developments and it is being followed in many countries around the world.
