AROUND THE GREENS In June the Australian Open was a great success for our club and players, now as we head in to July, the next big focus for our Hawks crew is PENNANT TIME! The Australian Open was held on the Gold Coast again for the fourth successive year and was a resounding success. We held events here on our greens from the 9th through to the 20th June and it was great to see both old and new faces frequenting the club. A massive thank you must be extended to over fifty of our hard working and helpful club members who volunteered their time throughout the event to ensure the bowls side of the tournament ran smoothly - your assistance was invaluable. Thanks also to our management and staff for their warm and welcoming hospitality. When I was speaking to players
around the bowls circuit, everyone was extremely complimentary of our greens, volunteers, and our club facilities, with most players wishing they could have more matches at Club Helensvale! Well done to all involved. With many of our members competing in the event, we had much success on the greens as well. Nathan Rice and his team (Ryan Burnett, Jeremy Henry, and Alex Marshall) secured the Gold Medal in the men’s fours after defeating fellow Hawks Aron Sherriff, Jayden Christie and their team (Barrie Lester and Josh Thornton) on the last bowl of the match – one of the best quality finals in Australian Open history. Our
young junior Jessie Cottell also secured a Gold Medal in the Girls U18 Singles event, defeating fellow Queenslander Rebecca Rixon 21 – 14. Some other notable performances were that of Ted Read and Allan Cumberford who made it to the semi final of the men’s over 60 pairs, and Shane Kerr who made the quarter final of the multi disability singles event. Well done to all our members who won events, but also to those that were out there competing and giving it their best on the day. It was great to see so many Hawks shirts at all the different clubs around the Coast.
Our Club Pennant Divisions for 2018 have been confirmed by the District with the men having eight teams in Division 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10, while the ladies have four teams in Division 1, 2, 4 and 7. The ladies will start their season on the 6th July with finals scheduled for the 17th August, and the men will start on the 7th July with their finals scheduled for the weekend of the 25th and 26th August. All the best to those out there competing for our club, and to those giving up their time to manage or be reserves in each side. Good hard and bring home some flags! In club championship news two more worthy winners were crowned with our men’s senior fours and ladies B grade singles being completed. Our men’s fours winners were Laurie Swift, John Hillam, Carl Davis, and Joe Weisshardt after they defeated Rod Dillon, Terry Rees, Bob Phillips and Derek Dixon 25 - 8 in their final. Our B Grade champion for 2018 is Fran Ryan after she triumphed in her final against Tanya Kiepe 25 - 16. Well done to our winners, runners up and all our competing teams.
The Queensland leg of the Mens Australian Indoor Qualifying was held on the 2nd and 3rd June with several of our members competing at both the Paradise Point and Tweed Heads venues. Paul Staggard Jnr was successful in his bid and will now compete in the main draw of this event to be held at Tweed Heads from the 20th – 23rd August. Good luck Staggs! Broadbeach held their inaugural $64,000 Blue Opal Singles event on the 5th and 6th June. The field was a ‘who’s who’ of the bowling world with World, Commonwealth and Australian Champions scattered all throughout the draw of 64 players. Nathan Rice made it all the way to the Grand Final where he was just pipped at the $20,000 winners post by Kawana’s Kurt Brown 25 – 23. Not going away empty handed, Nathan won $15,000 as runner up in this prestigious field. Well done. Several of our Hawks Junior Academy players - Shane, Tahlia and Jessie - were involved in a training day at Burleigh Heads on Friday 8th June with the Bowls Queensland youth side
taking on some Hong Kong internationals in a warm up for the Australian Open. It was a great opportunity for our rising stars to experience international competition. The district champion of champion events will commence in July with our club singles, pairs and fours winners all aiming to secure the Gold Coast trophies. Dates and venues of each event are LADIES SINGLES - 18th and 19th July at Tweed Heads LADIES PAIRS - 23rd and 24th July at Tweed Heads LADIES FOURS - 16th and 17th July at Southport. MENS SINGLES - 22nd July at Musgrave Hill MENS PAIRS - 8th July and 15th July at Musgrave Hill MENS FOURS - 30th June and 1st July at Musgrave Hill (Grand Final dates for each men’s discipline is TBA).

THE FOLLOW THROUGH
All ball games, it seems, have one bit of technique in common, the follow through! Whatever has happened before the ball has gone, and however correct the approach or the contact, the success of the action, whether it be hitting, kicking, cueing or throwing or rolling, depends in the end on the ‘Follow Through’.
COACHING Thursday mornings from 9am or by appointment Bob Hill
You might think that once the ball (bowl) has gone, nothing can be done to affect its travel, and I suppose, strictly speaking, that may be the case. The truth is that the performance of a perfect follow through, is a kind of post - delivery guarantee that what has gone before has been properly and thoroughly performed. The follow through is a natural extension of the forward swing, and should continue along the line exactly, with your hand finishing palm up, fingers outstretched towards your aiming point. Your hand should finish at a point, approximately knee high.
