Cloverdale answers the call

By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale residents are known for their generosity. But nothing prepared Kevin and Trish Lunder for the outpouring of support for the 20th annual Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program. The Lunders took the helm of the nondenominational charity food drive in 2011, and weren’t quite sure what to expect. They needn’t have worried. Thanks to churches, businesses, schools, and individuals, more than 230 hampers were provided to needy families in the Cloverdale area last month along with new toys and gift cards for more than 200 children and youths. “The Cloverdale community really pulled together to make this happen,” Kevin Lunder said, thanking sponsors, donors and volunteers. “It will be easy next year,” says Trish, who’s raring to go for 2012. Volunteers ranged from Cub Scouts and Girl Guides to university students. “We had 30 student teachers from SFU show up one day,” Kevin said. “Those 30 individuals just gave us such a kick start,” Trish added. But they were blown away by the boy who emptied his piggy bank to help out, sending $100 and a Christmas card. “I have saved my money from my allowance this year and would like to give it to you,”

the card read. “I hope it can help somebody who needs it.” It was signed, “Sincerely, Jakob Thompson, Grade 5, Adams Road Elementary.” Last week, the Lunders thanked Jakob Thompson in person. Jakob said he’s donated his allowance to a worthy cause each year since he was six. “I just like giving to people who don’t have money,” he explained, shrugging. Now age 10, he receives a weekly allowance of $8. “I do chores, vacuuming,” said Jakob, whose favourite subjects are math and science. He has three piggy banks: one for saving, one for charity, and one for spending (Lego is a favourite). When he learned his school, Adams Road Elementary, was collecting donations on behalf of the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program, he knew he had to help out. Local schools play a vital role in the annual food drive. More than 50 per cent of all food donations in 2011 came from Clayton Heights and Lord Tweedsmuir secondary schools. This was Adams Road Elementary’s first opportunity to participate, Principal Joanne Berka said. The school opened last January. Students, staff and parents really got behind the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program, collecting donations in bins stationed throughout the school.

Kevin and Trish Lunder were blown away by the support shown for the 20th annual Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program. But no-one exemplified the spirit of generosity like Jakob Thompson, centre.

Club closure ‘a turning point’ for Cloverdale By Jennifer Lang Saturday night was the last exotic dance at Cloverdale’s Legacy Showroom. The strip club in the Clover Inn has been shut down, signaling the end of an era for exotic entertainment in Surrey’s historic town centre, and representing a turning point for Cloverdale. In closing the Legacy, Andrew Knott, one of the owners of the Clover Inn who purchased the establishment last year, said he was responding to pressure from the local business community, law enforcement officials, and the City of Surrey. “It doesn’t fit in anymore,” Knott said. “The city has wanted it shut

down for a long time.” The Clover Inn’s guest rooms and cafe are not affected by the decision, although Knott wants to relocate the liquor store to another retail location in Cloverdale, a plan that would require regulatory approval and a rezoning application. Meanwhile, he’s in the process of selling the Clover Inn, located at 5708 176 Street, to another buyer. Future plans might include renovating the bar and the building, but nothing’s been decided. “I think it will be revamped a bit,” he said. “It’s a good spot for a lounge.” He called the decision to close the strip club, which was bringing in thou-

sands of dollars in revenue each weekend, as a act of good faith to the establishment’s neighbours. Both the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association had been lobbying to shut the club down as a condition of moving the motel’s liquor store. The Surrey RCMP’s Cloverdale community policing office and the City of Surrey were also instrumental in convincing Knott to pull the plug. The lounge has had a turbulent history. Turned into a strip club about 15 years ago, the Legacy Showroom had been associated with criminal activity See ‘A CANCER’ / Page 3

Kudos for local goalie

By Jennifer Lang The impressive netminding and team leadership skills of a local high school student have earned him a prestigious hockey honour. Cloverdale’s Braden Krogfoss has been named Major Midget League Player of the Month for December, BC Hockey announced this week. Krogfoss, goalie for the Vancouver North West Giants, is leading the BCMML’s goalie standings. The Grade 11 Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary student had a great month, finishing December with a record 3-0-0, 0.33 goals against average, plus two shutouts, BCHockey.net reported Monday. His stats to date are 11-1-4, with a .940 save percentage, and 6 shut-outs. His “marquee win” was in Prince George, where he made 29 saves in a 1-0 win against the Cariboo Cougars in a rematch of the 2010-2011 MML championships. “Braden is a quiet leader on the Giants who is always fully prepared to play and competes very hard in all practices,” Giants head coach Todd Harkins said. In being named Player of the Month, Krogfoss was chosen from a high calibre list of nominees. Runners up included teammate Nicolas Hermary.

Knee Injury

Q A

I injured my knee playing rugby. It is now swollen and painful. What do you recommend I do? It is important to determine whether the injury resulted from running or from a sliding, twisting or impact type injury. A forceful twist and compression to the knee may result in injury to the structures of the knee joint namely bone, ligament or cartilage. These type of injuries are characterized by pain, swelling and instability. Acute management of these injuries should include a detailed assessment to determine the structures involved and the severity of the injury. X-rays may be prescribed to assess the joint as well as anti inflammatory medication to decrease the inflammation. If there was no direct cause of injury the biomechanics of the player must be examined. This refers to spinal alignment, muscle imbalance across the hip, knee and ankle, core stability, foot posture and running gait analysis. In both cases wearing a compression garment and applying ice to the injured area for 10-15 min will serve to reduce the swelling. Good footwear with adequate shock absorption and motion control are recommended. A physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help to relieve pain and restore function.

Children are recommended to have at least one hour of physical activity per day. It is never too early to start good habits. You should always make sure that your daycare allows for outdoor play every day (weather permitting). If weather does not permit, there should be adequate space inside to have a bit of a run. At KidZrock we not only have two on-site play areas, we have access to an elementary school as well as gym space, skating and swimming lessons. Our field trips include outdoor parks and indoor adventure playgrounds. Even our preschoolers use the gym time and field trips!

Q

A

Do I need to go to the dealership for regular maintenance? Getting your vehicle serviced at the dealership is not mandatory to have your warranty stay in effect. Regular maintenance can be performed at any qualified service facility as long as you keep your proof of purchase and your service provider fills out your maintenance record. You should follow the service schedule designed by the automotive engineers who built your vehicle to keep you driving trouble free and at the same time maintain the value of your investment. An independent repair facility can offer you the same quality, service and reliability as a dealership to keep your investment on the road.

Q

What criteria is there for immediate dentures?

A

When complete extractions of your remaining teeth become unavoidable, an immediate denture is a solution. This process will help you avoid the embarrassment of being without teeth. Your denturist will initiate this procedure before your teeth are extracted. An impression is made of your existing teeth and gums prior to the extraction surgery and is used as working models for the construction of your new dentures. From your models the denturist is able to copy and construct a denture, duplicating your original teeth with improvements to your appearance, if you so wish. At your extraction appointment, your immediate dentures are inserted avoiding the embarrassment of having no teeth during your healing period. At the completion of the healing period, a permanent reline or a new denture may be constructed to ensure a comfortable and an exact fit. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.

Q

Is a garage usually considered in the square footage in a home? It is attached to the home?

A

Although a garage is attached to the home, it is not considered part of the home’s square footage. That is because only livable space is considered in the square footage calculation. Calculating the square footage of a home is not as easy as it sounds. When a home’s square footage is advertised, the figure usually comes from previous sales, perhaps as far back as the builder. Appraisers map out the house on a piece of graph paper, calculate all the edges, come up with “mini-areas” for each rectangle and then add them all together. It is best to rely on a licensed appraiser to recalculate the square footage of a house. “Thinking of buying or selling? Call The Lunders today”
