CHER

The Iconic Journey of a Pop Culture Phenomenon

Cher is much more than a singer or actress; she is a pop culture icon whose career has spanned six decades. Her unique ability to reinvent herself, combined with her raw talent and tenacity, has kept her relevant in an industry that often sidelines women as they age. From her beginnings as a shy teenager with a powerful voice to her transformation into a global superstar, Cher’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and relentless creativity.

Here we explore the significant milestones of Cher’s career, her contributions to music, film, and fashion, and the impact she’s had on society and culture. Along the way, Cher’s own words will provide insight into the mind of a woman who refuses to be defined by anyone else’s terms.

“PEOPLE TOLD ME, ‘YOU’RE TOO OLD FOR THIS.’ And I said, ‘Screw that.’”

Cher’s early years were marked by a turbulent family life. Her parents divorced when she was young, and Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt, remarried several times. Cher often felt like an outsider because of her mixed heritage, as she was part Armenian, Irish, and Cherokee. She struggled with dyslexia in school and dropped out at the age of 16, moving to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a star. “I didn’t fit in anywhere,” Cher has said of her teenage years. “I was an outsider because I was Armenian, I had black hair, and people made fun of me for being different.” These experiences of alienation and rejection would shape Cher’s fierce determination to succeed on her own terms.

In 1962, Cher met the aspiring music producer Sonny Bono, a pivotal moment in her life. Their relationship quickly turned romantic, and by 1964, the duo was performing together as “Sonny & Cher.” Their big break came with the release of the hit single “I Got You Babe” in 1965. The song became a massive success, reaching number one on the Billboard charts and catapulting the duo into stardom. Reflecting on the early years, Cher has said: “Sonny was the first person to believe in me. He knew exactly how to market me because he knew how different I was. He gave me confidence, and he gave me a career.” Cher’s deep affection for Sonny Bono remained long after their personal and professional relationships ended, and she often credited him for her early success.

While “Sonny & Cher” had significant success throughout the 1960s, particularly with their variety show “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour”, Cher’s individuality began to shine. Despite the commercial success of the duo, Cher longed for artistic autonomy. She began to pursue a solo career, releasing her first album in 1965, but it wasn’t until the 70s that Cher truly came into her own. The 70s marked a period of self-reinvention for Cher. Following her divorce from Sonny Bono in 1975, she proved she could thrive on her own. “I never wanted to be a Sonny & Cher thing forever,” Cher once remarked. “I wanted to grow. I wanted to expand.”

“UNTIL YOU’RE READY TO LOOK FOOLISH, YOU’LL NEVER HAVE the possibility of being great.”

Her decision to embrace her individuality paid off. Cher’s distinctive contralto voice, bold fashion choices, and willingness to experiment musically led to hits such as “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” (1971), “Half-Breed” (1973), and “Dark Lady” (1974). These songs not only topped the charts but also showcased Cher’s ability to tell compelling stories through her music.

Cher has always had a rebellious streak, often challenging the conventional norms of femininity and sexuality. Whether it was her midriff-baring outfits or her unapologetically provocative persona, Cher embraced her uniqueness. Her partnership with legendary costume designer Bob Mackie solidified her status as a fashion icon. The extravagant, sequined, feathered ensembles she wore became as much a part of her identity as her voice. “I love the idea of taking something outlandish and making it chic,” Cher once said about her iconic fashion choices. “Fashion is about fun and taking risks.”

While Cher’s music career was thriving, the 1980s brought an unexpected turn as she embarked on a career in acting, defying the stereotypes often imposed on singers crossing into film. She won critical acclaim for her role in “Silkwood” (1983), where she starred alongside Meryl Streep. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for

Best Supporting Actress, proving her ability to captivate audiences beyond the music world. Reflecting on her move to acting, Cher said: “Everyone told me not to do it. They said, ‘You’re a singer, not an actress.’ But I knew I could do it. I’ve always had to prove people wrong, and I thrive on that.”

In the years that followed, Cher’s acting career soared. She delivered powerful performances in films such as “Mask” (1985), “The Witches of Eastwick” (1987), and most notably “Moonstruck” (1987), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. In her acceptance speech, Cher said, “I don’t think that this means that I am somebody, but I guess I’m on my way.” Humble, yet unapologetically proud of her achievements, Cher continued to prove her versatility as an artist.

Cher’s ability to seamlessly transition between mediums— music, television, and film—is one of the qualities that has made her an enduring figure in entertainment. She did not let herself be boxed in by the expectations of others, refusing

to conform to the limited roles that society often ascribes to women, especially those over a certain age.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Cher’s career is her ability to stage comebacks that surpass expectations. By the late 1980s, Cher had become a legend in her own right, but the 1990s brought a fresh wave of success that would cement her status as a pop culture phenomenon.

In 1998, Cher released the album “Believe”, featuring the title track that became one of the biggest hits of her career. The song was a game-changer, incorporating autotune in a way that had never been done before, giving Cher’s voice a distinctive, futuristic sound. “Believe” topped the charts worldwide and won Cher a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. At the age of 52, Cher was once again at the top of the music industry, breaking records and redefining the notion of age in pop music.

In interviews, Cher has been candid about the public’s perception of aging women in the industry: “People told me, ‘You’re too old for this.’ And I said, ‘Screw that.’” Cher’s defiance of ageism and her refusal to be silenced has inspired countless women, showing that creativity and relevance have no expiration date. The success of “Believe” led to another resurgence in her career, which included the wildly successful “Living Proof: The Farewell Tour” in 2002. The tour, which was originally intended to be her last, became the highestgrossing concert tour by a female artist at the time.

Beyond her work in entertainment, Cher has also been an outspoken advocate for social justice, particularly LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights. Having witnessed and participated

in the cultural shifts of the 1960s and beyond, Cher has consistently used her platform to speak out against injustice and discrimination. Cher’s open support of LGBTQ+ rights has made her a beloved figure within the community. Her 1998 hit “Believe” became an anthem for many LGBTQ+ individuals, symbolising resilience and the power of self-acceptance.

Cher’s career is unparalleled, but her influence goes beyond the number of records sold or awards won. She has become a symbol of perseverance, reinvention, and the power of authenticity. She has often been labelled as the “Goddess of Pop,” a title that reflects not only her contributions to music but also her broader cultural impact.

Cher’s refusal to be pigeonholed or restricted by societal norms has made her a feminist icon, a symbol of female empowerment. “I’ve been up and down and over and out, but I always get back up,” she said in a 2018 interview. “I don’t know how to do anything else. You just have to keep going, no matter what.”

As Cher continues to perform and create well into her 70s, she defies the conventional boundaries of age and gender. Her influence can be seen in the many artists who have followed in her footsteps—Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé— each of whom has credited Cher as a trailblazer.

Cher’s powerful voice, unapologetic persona, and willingness to challenge societal norms have made her a timeless figure in popular culture. As Cher herself once said, “Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.” It is this fearless approach to life and art that has made Cher not just a star, but an enduring legend.

Go ahead and bin your black outfits. You won’t be needing them with all the lush oxblood pieces you’re about to see all across stores. Thanks to the wave of deep burgundy dresses and accessories that flooded the catwalks from Ferragamo to Saint Laurent, oxblood is undoubtedly the colour of the season. BUILDING YOUR immune system

Exercise

Regular physical activity helps you feel better, sleep better, and reduce anxiety. Combined with eating well, physical activity can help a person maintain a healthy weight. Physical activity isn’t just for building muscles — it’s also an important part of being healthy and supporting a healthy immune system.

Hydrate

Water plays many important roles in your body, including supporting your immune system. Even if you’re not exercising or sweating, you’re constantly losing water through your breath, as well as through your urine and bowel movements. To help support your immune system, be sure you’re replacing the water you lose with water you can use - which starts with knowing what your daily water intake should be.

Bring a pan of water to the boil and add the eggs. Cook for 6 minutes, then drain and cover with cold water until later. Meanwhile, crumble the stock cubes into a large saucepan and stir in 1.2L water. Add the ginger, soy sauce and ½ the salad onions, then heat gently until simmering.

Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the courgettes and mushrooms and fry for 5 minutes, or until lightly browned. Peel the eggs. Transfer the mushrooms and courgettes to the pan of stock, add the noodles and cook for a further 3 minutes, until the noodles are tender. Ladle into shallow bowls, halve the eggs and add to the bowls, topping each one with the remaining salad onions and a sprinkling of parsley.

Sleep

Sleep certainly doesn’t feel like an active process, but there are plenty of important things happening in your body when you’re not awake. To give your immune system the best chance to fight off infection and illness, it’s important to know how much sleep you should be getting every night, as well as the steps to take if your sleep is suffering.

Less Stress

Whether it comes on quick or builds over time, it’s important to understand how chronic stress affects your health. Stress can potentially have a secondary impact on how well your immune system functions if it leads to sleep disturbances, a tendency to eat less healthy food, reduced water intake, less frequent exercise and more. Stress IS different for everyone, and how we relieve it is, too. Given the effect it can have on your health, it’s important to know how to identify stress. And, whether it’s deep breathing, mediation, prayer or exercise, you should also get familiar with the activities that help you reduce stress.

EMBRACING MOVEMBER: More Than Just a Moustache

As the leaves turn golden and the chill of November sets in, you might notice something else sprouting across the faces of men—moustaches.

This facial hair growth isn’t just about keeping warm; it’s part of a global movement known as Movember, which is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for men’s health issues. While the moustache may be the symbol, the heart of Movember goes far deeper, focusing on critical topics like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

Why Movember Matters

Movember, which started in 2003, aims to shine a light on health issues that disproportionately affect men. Often, men’s health is left unspoken due to societal pressures and stigmas that discourage men from seeking help, especially when it comes to mental and emotional well-being. Movember tackles these challenges head-on by promoting awareness and encouraging men to talk about their health, both physical and mental.

Here’s why Movember is crucial for men’s health:

Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men. It often goes undetected in its early stages, which is why Movember pushes for regular screenings and early detection. With awareness, men can catch prostate cancer early, increasing the chances of successful treatment.

Testicular Cancer: Testicular cancer primarily affects younger men, but when caught early, the survival rate is high. Movember encourages selfexaminations and routine doctor visits to spot signs of testicular cancer early.

Mental Health and Suicide Prevention: Men, on average, are less likely to seek help for mental health issues. Movember brings attention to the alarming rate of male suicide. The movement promotes open conversations about mental health, encouraging men to reach out and support one another, breaking the stigma around discussing emotions and mental well-being.

How to Get Involved

There’s more to Movember than just growing a moustache, though that’s the iconic start! Whether you’re moustache-ready or prefer a different approach, there are plenty of ways to participate and raise awareness for men’s health.

Grow a Mo: The classic Movember challenge is to start November clean-shaven and grow a moustache throughout the month. It’s a conversation starter that can help raise awareness and funds.

Move for Movember: Movember’s Move Challenge encourages participants to walk or run 60 kilometres during November—symbolising the 60 men lost to suicide every hour globally. It’s a great way to stay active while supporting a vital cause.

Donate: If growing a moustache or participating in physical challenges isn’t your style, you can always donate to support Movember’s men’s health projects.

SITUATIONSHIPS:

THE NEW-AGE RELATIONSHIP

Summer has wound down, we’ve swapped our tank tops for roll necks and jean jackets for cute cropped puffers as we head into those cosy months. We swap our cocktails and dinner on a rooftop to home-made carby soul food, a peppermint tea, looking for our next Netflix binge and a warm nook to slide into. We begin to ponder the thought of having a warm body to snuggle up to, to save on the heating bill of course. This cost-of-living crisis really has us making some irrational choices!

Now over the past couple of years, I have dabbled in the dating pool. For the most, it’s been challenging and a bit odd, but for some, I have genuinely found myself meeting guys who I thought I should attempt to be in a relationship with. However; in fact, walked away from thinking that they would have just been a great situationship. I have always been the type of person that dates with intent. That you should put your energy into dating people that could lead onto something more serious.

As I’m taking my time to understand what it is I’m actually searching for from this life of mine, l’ve come to a stark realisation that maybe I don’t want to be in a relationship and I more enjoy the fluidity that comes with a situationship type connection… I never thought these words would come out of my mouth but here we are.

For those of you who are unsure of what a situationship is, let me explain. A ‘situationship’ is an intimate relationship which is more than a fling and less than a fully committed relationship. In the words of my poignant friend, someone to ‘wok’ regularly. Sigh.

You can enjoy each other’s company, be intimate and have a deeper connection but, you are not mutually exclusive, and you have not defined the relationship as one. It’s a mutually beneficial situation, so long as you both agree that it is what it is.

When you start to question “What are we?” you are most likely in a situationship and didn’t even realise. If you’re a conventional dater, with the intention to meet someone for a more serious prospect, you may find it difficult to navigate this ever-evolving dating world. Things aren’t as black and white anymore. It’s not just casual hook ups or serious courting, the two have become blurred. Do I ask ‘what are we?’ Or is that too forward? Do I just continue down this casual road? I mean I’ve made it clear I don’t want anything more so the other person can’t get hurt. See? Murky.

Let’s take a look at situationships and why they’ve become so common. I am under no

illusion that me considering a situationship as my go-to is because of trying to balance a lifestyle that I’m not quite ready to give up yet, or to try and maintain a lower level of emotional attachment because I’m scared of getting hurt again. Since my previous long-term relationship, I have regained my independence, I am focussing on my career and work hard on building and living a great life on my own, partly due to a hyper independence trauma response. After hitting the dating pool looking for ‘The one’, I swiftly left it again and put that search to rest as I continue to enjoy the peace that single life brings.

I have personally concluded that delaying marriage to focus on myself and my personal growth is the best course of life, for me. I have a busy lifestyle, trying to fit in work, healthy habits, friends and family aka, my soul food and I’ve made a decision that focussing my attention on a full-blown relationship, isn’t what I want right now.

At some point, I would like to settle down and have children, of course, but it would be selfish of me to try and do that right now when I’m not 100% invested in doing that. I was able to freeze my eggs which has afforded me the time to decide what I would like to do.

“IF YOU’RE A CONVENTIONAL DATER, WITH THE INTENTION TO MEET SOMEONE FOR A MORE SERIOUS PROSPECT, YOU MAY FIND IT difficult to navigate this ever-evolving dating world.”

Thanks to past relationship trauma, I am also hesitant to step into another relationship and carry that trauma in with me. It would not be fair to them, or to me. I still feel as though I have some healing to do. With that said, I have learned to prioritise myself in dating and what is good for me, right now. Am I emotionally available? No. Do I attract other emotional unavailable people? Indeed, I do. Do I want to avoid emotional vulnerability now whilst I’m on an upward trajectory in life? Yes.

Although this may not be the most ‘conventional’ way to live life, this is the way I’ve decided to live mine and until I decide that this isn’t what I want anymore, I do not want to attempt to fit a square peg in a round hole because people say so.

Sure, loneliness, the increased cost of the heating bill and not a single manly hoodie in sight can temper the spirit occasionally but that’s a perfect example of how a situationship can help. It’s all about making it work for, and around you.

There are great benefits, and also some real downsides to a situationship, even with boundaries being set at the very beginning.

1. You have the freedom to do what you want. You are in a non-exclusive agreement with another person where you do not define labels and you have no expectations that your situationship will develop into something deeper. The focal point is not a relationship, it allows you to focus your efforts on your career, goals and other important areas of your life. The situationship is there to serve a purpose in the intimacy department. The downside of this, is that not everyone can always be aligned to the level of input prepared to be given by both parties. One may want more than the other leave us feeling somewhat unfulfilled.

2. On occasion situationships can organically grow into something more defined. Taking it slow to begin with can help to nurture a more organic relationship; however, the absence of emotional vulnerability from a situationship can stifle a deeper relationship. It would also require one party to open up and step out of their boundaries which, at times, may not be reciprocated. Most people will get into situations to not progress into something deeper. It provides a means to an end.

3. Low emotional investment. This is great for those of us suffering from previous relationship trauma. Easing your way back into some kind of intimacy without the pressure and labels can help to improve your confidence and your comfortability with romantic connections. The downside is that as you spend more time with one another, feelings may naturally develop and the need for something more will become more evident in most cases potentially causing a rift.

So now we know the good, the bad and the ugly, how do we navigate a situationship safety if that’s the desired course?

1. Define boundaries early on… with yourself. Don’t lie to yourself, clearly define what it is you’re looking for and assess your pros and cons dependant on your situation and what you need from it.

2. The more honest and open you are with one another, the less likely it is to go awry. Half the struggle is ensuring you’re on the same page and you both stay on the same page. Feelings can change all the time.

3. If at any point you are both misaligned in your journey together, know when to cut it off. If it no longer suits you or your purpose, walk away.

4. I would urge those of you considering a situationship to tread carefully. If you are a lover girl/ lover boy who has a tendency to become quite emotionally attached and are guilty of limerence (a state of mind where you easily become infatuated) then maybe situationships are not for you, unless you want to be in a perpetual state of misery.

Have boundaries and open communication. Be true to yourself, enjoy it and if it no longer suits you, walk away.

Good Luck!

Ah the joys of post-partum! You’d think after the stress of pregnancy, you’d give birth and just feel GREAT. Well, along with the raging hormones, lack of sleep, the weight you have to shift, intrusive thoughts and the dreaded hair loss, your skin can also feel a bit meh too. I know personally how important it is to just feel like “you” again in the hurricane that is post-partum. So this month I have teamed up with Skin expert, Piril Sideras, with some top tips to get your mum glow back!

Winter skincare fixes for busy mums: Simple solutions for radiant skin during the colder months Being a mum of two little ones under the age of two, I truly understand the meaning of “I just don’t have time.” Between the endless demands of motherhood, managing a household, balancing work, and everything else in between, life can often feel overwhelming. By the time the kids are finally asleep and you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror for maybe, the first time all day, that inevitable thought crosses your mind—”Wow, I look exhausted.”

As the founder of PS Aesthetics Clinic, I built my brand with a passion for helping women find practical, effective solutions to feel empowered in their skin and wellness journeys. I understand firsthand how challenging it can be to find time for self-care, so I’m excited to share our

tried-and-tested treatments—designed for busy mums, delivering results without long recovery times.

With the festive season approaching, cold weather and dry air can wreak havoc on your skin, making an effective and practical winter skincare routine essential for us mums. Here are some common skin woes and my go-to treatments to tackle them. Hydration is key – winter causes more moisture loss, so invest in a high-quality moisturiser that’s deeply hydrating and nourishing. Key components to look out for are humectants and emollients. I LOVE using ZO Skin Health’s Hydrating Creme, not only does it tick all of the boxes – it has been awarded the Seal of Acceptance by National Eczema Association.

Combat dull complexion with exfoliating and brightening ingredients. Cold weather slows down cell turnover, making gentle exfoliants essential for revealing a brighter glow. One of my favorite products is ZO Skin Health’s Physical Exfoliating Polish Limit use to once or twice a week to avoid stripping natural oils.

Advance winter skincare treatments

In-clinic treatments are the perfect complement to your at-home routine and give your skin an extra boost. Mama’s if you’re thinking ‘I will struggle with finding time’ I have included a guide on treatment times and how often you’ll need them, so you can easily plan ahead.

SkinPen Microneedling (45mins) is an excellent option for rejuvenating winter skin, as it stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture by creating tiny micro-injuries. Recommended for 3-4 sessions per year.

Chemical Peels (30-45 mins) are another fantastic option for winter skin rejuvenation. By exfoliating the top layer of skin, they reveal a smoother, brighter complexion and help to address issues like dullness, uneven tone, and fine lines. There are many peels available, so it’s important to consult with your aesthetician to discuss what suits your skin type and concerns. Recommended every 4-6 weeks.

CLASSIC CHRISTMAS

Classic Christmas is all about celebrating the season in a way that feels warm, nostalgic, and enduringly elegant. This is a trend takes inspiration from very traditional elements—think deep reds, forest greens, gold accents, and classic wreaths. In fact, it’s reminiscent of the kind of festive scenes found in “A Christmas Carol”—grand trees adorned with baubles, twinkling lights, and natural garlands, creating an atmosphere that’s both opulent and cosy.

Coffee-scented

STEAK & MUSHROOM PIE

A creamy and delicious, coffee-spiked, stroganoff-style steak and mushroom filling baked into an easy shortcrust pie.

Serves 4

Prep 15 mins

Cook 50 mins

Ingredients

1 tbsp Essential Olive Oil • 1 onion, chopped

• 1 clove garlic, finely chopped • 250g British Chestnut Mushrooms, sliced • 320g sheet shortcrust pastry • 200g Waitrose Free

Range Beech Smoked Bacon Lardons • 2 x

250g packs British beef rump stir fry strips

• 2 tbsp plain flour • 150ml medium strength black coffee • 75g creme fraiche • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • Beaten egg or milk, to glaze

Method

Cook’s tip

The filling is ideal for preparing in advance; cool it in the tin, then cover and chill. Top it with the pastry and bake when needed, adding a few minutes to the cooking time to make sure it’s hot throughout.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan, then cook the onion and garlic for 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook over a high heat for 5 minutes more until golden and softened. Transfer to a bowl.

Preheat the oven to 200oC, gas mark 6. Take the pastry out of the fridge. Add the lardons to the hot pan and cook for 2-3 minutes. Meanwhile, mix together the beef, flour and some seasoning. Add to the pan and cook over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes until lightly browned.

Return the mushroom mixture with their juices, then stir in the coffee. Bring to the boil and cook, stirring, for a couple of minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from the heat then stir in the crème fraîche and mustard and check the seasoning.

Transfer the filling to a rectangular metal pie dish or roasting tin (approx 28 x 22cm) and allow to cool slightly. Dampen the edges of the tin with water. Unroll the pastry, and lay it over the top, trimming away any excess. Firmly press the pastry edges to the tin with a fork, then decorate the top with any trimmings. Brush with milk or beaten egg, then make a hole in the centre. Bake on a baking tray for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.

Cook’s tip

Use strong cotton thread, or unflavoured dental floss, to portion out your dough neatly. Simply take a 30cm length of cotton, thread it under the log where you want to cut, then pull the thread up and cross them to slice through the dough into rounds.

CINNAMON ROLLS

These cream-cheese topped cinnamon pastries are Martha Collison’s favourite thing to bake.

Makes 12

Prep 30 mins

Cook 15 mins

Ingredients

For the dough

75g butter, cubed • 100ml semi

skimmed milk • 250g plain flour •

250g strong white bread flour •

7g fast-action dried yeast • 25g caster

sugar • 2 Waitrose British Blacktail

Free Range Medium Eggs • Oil, for greasing

For the filling

125g butter, softened • 150g dark brown soft sugar • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp ground nutmeg

For the topping

25g butter, softened • 50g Essential

Waitrose full fat soft cheese • 100g icing sugar • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Method

Place the butter into a saucepan with the milk. Warm over a low heat until it melts, then set aside to allow the mixture to cool.

Combine the flours into a large bowl and add the yeast and caster sugar. Add 100ml warm water to the milk and butter mixture, then beat in the eggs. Gradually add this to the dry mixture, stirring acontinuously, until a sticky dough forms. You may not need all the milk mixture – add just enough for a sticky but not wet dough.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly oiled surface and knead for 10-15 minutes, or until no longer sticky, smooth and elastic. Place into an oiled bowl, cover, and leave in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until the dough doubles in size.

To make the cinnamon filling, beat the soft butter, soft sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg to a smooth paste. Set aside. When the dough has risen, turn it out onto the oiled surface and fold in on itself a couple of times to knock out any large air bubbles. Roll out to a large rectangle approximately 40x60cm (or 1.5 times as long as it is wide), getting it as thin as possible.

Using a spatula or palette knife, spread the cinnamon filling over the dough in an even layer. Starting at the shorter edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Trim the ends, then divide the dough into 12 even-sized pieces (see tip). Place on a large baking tray, leaving a gap between each to allow them to rise.

Cover the buns loosely with a clean tea towel and leave to rise for 30 minutes, or until puffy and larger in size. While the buns are rising, preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Prepare the topping by beating together all the ingredients until smooth Bake the buns for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown on top and beautifully risen. Allow to cool for a few minutes (the cinnamon sugar will have bubbled up), then smear with the topping while the buns are warm so it drips into all the crevices. Allow to harden slightly, then serve as soon as possible.

CAKE

The combination of rich espresso with silky pumpkin and warming spice is delicious in this Martha Collison cake recipe.

Serves 10

Prep 25 mins Cook 50 mins

Ingredients

100ml vegetable oil, plus a drop for greasing • ½ x 425g can America’s Finest Solid Pack Pumpkin

• 2 Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Eggs large • 100ml strongly brewed coffee • 125g caster sugar • 125g light brown soft sugar • 250g plain flour • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp mixed spice

• 1½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp ground ginger

For the coffee syrup

50ml strongly brewed coffee • 50g caster sugar

For the icing

50g icing sugar • 100g Essential Waitrose full fat soft cheese • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 250ml double cream

• Ground cinnamon, for dusting

Method

Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4, and grease and line a 900g loaf tin with baking parchment. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the oil, pumpkin purée, eggs, coffee and sugars. Using another bowl, combine the flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and spices. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ones, then mix until a smooth batter forms, with no large lumps of flour remaining. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the tin while you make the syrup.

Stir the coffee and sugar for the syrup together in a small saucepan and warm over a low heat until the sugar dissolves. When you can no longer see any crystals, turn the heat up and simmer for 2-3 minutes until thick and syrupy. As the cake cools, brush the top with some warm syrup, then allow the remaining syrup to cool completely.

To make the icing, whisk together the icing sugar, soft cheese and vanilla using a balloon whisk, until smooth. Add the cream in a steady stream, whisking continuously until the icing is thick and billowy. Pile up onto the top of the cooled cake and dust with cinnamon. Drizzle with the remaining coffee syrup, then serve, preferably with steaming mugs of coffee.

Limassol’s Crown Jewel

THE AMATHUS HOTEL

Nestled along the sun-kissed shores of Limassol, Cyprus, The Amathus Hotel is the epitome of luxury and sophistication, a five-star sanctuary where elegance meets relaxation. As proud members of "The Leading Hotels of the World," The Amathus delivers an unforgettable experience, drawing travellers who seek both luxury and authentic Mediterranean charm. The beauty of Cyprus lies not only in its crystal-clear waters and rich history but in places like this, where guests can truly indulge in life’s finest offerings. And as a recent visitor to this grand hotel, staying in one of its coveted Junior Suites with a private garden and pool, I can confidently say that The Amathus is a destination all on its own.

From the moment we arrived at The Amathus Hotel, we were enveloped in a sense of exclusivity and tranquillity. The hotel’s grand entrance immediately impresses, blending modern aesthetics with classic Mediterranean architecture. It’s the kind of place where you feel like a VIP the moment you step through the doors. The staff greeted us with warm Cypriot hospitality, offering a refreshing welcome drink –a lovely touch after a long journey.

As we checked in, it became clear why this hotel is part of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World collection. Every detail was meticulously attended to. The lobby, with its marble floors and panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, set the tone for what would be an unforgettable stay.

Our stay at The Amathus was centred around one very special feature – The Junior Suite. This accommodation is more than just a room; it’s an oasis within an oasis. Walking through the door of the suite, I was immediately struck by the sense of space and light. The suite was immaculately designed, with every inch exuding sophistication. The colour palette was a soothing mix of neutrals, soft greys, and warm tones, all carefully chosen to create an atmosphere of calm.

The centrepiece of the suite is undoubtedly the private garden area with its own pool – a feature that elevates the experience to something truly extraordinary. The garden felt like a private hideaway, surrounded by lush greenery that provided privacy while still allowing views of the glimmering sea in the distance. The pool itself was the perfect size for a leisurely dip, and there was something deeply satisfying about having such an intimate space to ourselves. Whether it was morning coffee by the pool or a sunset swim, the garden area became our personal sanctuary throughout the stay.

Inside the suite, the king-sized bed was a cloud of comfort, draped in luxurious linens that ensured restful sleep. The living area was spacious yet cosy, with contemporary furniture and subtle design elements that added character without overwhelming the senses. The bathroom was equally impressive, featuring a deep soaking tub, rain shower, and double vanity stocked with premium toiletries.

One of the standout features of staying in the Junior Suite was the direct access to the garden and pool area from the bedroom. It’s a rare luxury to wake up, slide open the glass doors, and step into your own private outdoor space with the Mediterranean breeze gently greeting you. Every detail of the suite seemed to be designed with relaxation and indulgence in mind.

Beyond the confines of the suite, the Amathus Hotel offers an array of world-class amenities. One of the standout features of the property is its incredible seawater pool, a feature that instantly captivated me. Positioned walking distance to the sea, the pool offers stunning views of the Mediterranean while giving guests the sensation of swimming in the ocean without leaving the hotel grounds.

The seawater pool is vast, and whether you’re in for a quick swim or lounging by the water with a drink in hand, it feels like a true indulgence. The poolside service was exceptional, with friendly staff always ready to cater to our needs – whether it was a fresh towel, a cocktail, or a light snack. There’s something truly magical about relaxing by a seawater pool as the sun sets over the horizon, the sky painting itself in hues of pink and gold. It’s moments like these that make The Amathus more than just a place to stay, but a destination to be remembered.

No luxury hotel stay is complete without a memorable breakfast experience, and The Amathus Hotel exceeded all expectations in this regard. Each morning, we were treated to an incredible breakfast buffet that had everything one could possibly desire.

Set in a stylish dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sea, the breakfast buffet was a celebration of both international and local flavours. There was an impressive array of fresh fruit, artisanal bread, and pastries that were almost too beautiful to eat. For those with a sweet tooth, the crepes, waffles, and Cypriot honey pastries were simply irresistible.

For guests seeking heartier fare, there was a selection of madeto-order omelettes, an abundance of smoked salmon, cold cuts, and local cheeses, as well as traditional Mediterranean dishes. It’s rare to find a hotel breakfast that can cater to so many different tastes, but The Amathus has mastered the art of indulgence at every level.

What made the breakfast experience even more enjoyable was the impeccable service. From the freshly squeezed juices to the expertly brewed Cypriot coffee, everything was delivered with care and attention to detail. It’s easy to linger here for hours. www.amathuslimassol.com

While their Award-winning gourmet seafood restaurant, Limanaki, is a star on its own, the hotel boasts two other incredible restaurants that deserve mention. The hotel’s main restaurant serves a diverse array of international dishes with a focus on Mediterranean cuisine. Meanwhile, the Grill Room offers a refined dining experience with expertly prepared steaks and gourmet sides.

Both restaurants maintain the same high standard of service and quality as Limanaki, ensuring that guests have a range of dining options that cater to all tastes and preferences.
