WIN: DREAM BOYS TICKETS The UK’s most famous male strip group will be sexing up the suburbs and charming UK cities with their recordbreaking tour, delivering more than 100 dates nationwide. The Dreamboys are setting pulses racing across Britain with their official UK tour, smashing records with more than 100 dates across the year! Renowned for their atmospheric shows bringing together high energy dance routines, west-end choreography, audience participation, incredibly toned physiques and largerthan-life personalities, it’s no surprise the Dreamboys have stolen the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.

I’m not really much of a great ‘blogger’ when it comes to this writing this Editor’s letter. Is that bad? I usually think of what I want to write really late at night, and by the morning I’ve forgotten everything but I guess that’s all part of transitioning and learning process. And that’s exactly what we are doing here at Close Up HQ. Every day there is a new lesson to be learned, and every edition is a chance to learn from the month before. Is there something you want to see more of in your monthly Close Up? Send us an email! We love to keep in touch with our readers and, again, learn. share what you want to see. Our cover star this month, Jennifer Aniston, also reflects just that. When researching Jen and putting together the write up for this beautiful issue, I learnt so much about a star I already thought I knew so much about (I’m a huge Friends fan, but then again, who isn’t?). Just like everyone in the ‘real world’, Jennifer took a lot of knock-backs before her success on Friends and still to this day, newspapers and magazines continue to create negative press about her try to knock her down, but in the words of Ross Geller, she is ‘FINE’. She is more than fine actually, she is on absolute fire. Only a few weeks ago she celebrated her 51st birthday by releasing the sexiest Interview magazine cover EVER! And as you all may or may not know, the five friends are now set to reunite on an unscripted set to talk all things Friends. Just the news we have all been waiting to here since the Season 10 finale back in 2004!

Joining the Dreamboys in 2020 is former fireman and Love Island star Michael Griffiths who will be showing off his cheeky charm and setting those pulses racing as he gets his kit off. Michael got us hot under the collar during his time in the Love Island villa and is now following in the footsteps of Hollyoaks actor Jake Quickenden, Geordie Shore’s Gaz Beadle, MTV star Rogan O’Connor and TOWIE’s star Dan Osborne by joining the legendary group. Dreamboys is seen by millions of people annually, that’s a lot of ripped t-shirts, chiselled torsos, men in uniform, and breath-taking antics. Dreamboys is the most inclusive male strip group in history welcoming all communities to our West End style show, our oldest audience member was 102 this year and it was her fourth time! Whether you are celebrating something special or just fancy embracing your inner flirt for a cheeky night out on the town, Dreamboys will have your jaw dropping and your palms clenched to your seats giving you the ultimate Too Hard to Resist adventure. For a full list of The Dreamboys UK tour dates, visit: To enter, simply email headed ‘DREAMBOYS’. Closing date Friday 20th March 2020. Good luck! Terms & Conditions apply

So, if you’re at a time in your life where you feeling a lot of knock-backs and a little low, just remember, we’ll be there for you! Like a best friend, a comfort, a home. Enjoy this fabulous issue, it’s all for you!

Party like a

ROCKSTAR! Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, TV & Film Star Warwick Davis, and Reality Star Fearne McCann are just a handful of celebrities to use the event specialists Cater Express. But why? We went to speak to directors Edward WentworthShaw and Pamela Naidoo to find out why Cater Express is the star’s choice.

I was greeted by a very welcoming receptionist at Cater Express’s office in Chiswick and was shown an annual review with a lovely herbal tea as I waited. Browsing through the company brochure, it was remarkable how many stars used Cater Express as their preferred choice. Big Narstie, Chipmunk, Giggs, Hollywood Director Paul Greengrass, Frank Skinner and BAFTA award-winner and Top Boy star Michael Ward are all seen with Cater Express’s directors and staff as they feast on BBQ/Hog Roasts, silver service dining and drinking around amazing looking LED bar and furniture. “Good morning, nice to meet you, my name is Edward” I was greeted by Director Edward Wentworth-Shaw wearing a 3-piece suit. “I was just reading your brochure; you have an interesting clientele portfolio” I responded as Mr WentworthShaw showed me into the board room. Pamela Naidoo was

6 // Close Up Magazine

awaiting me there and welcomed me with an amazing, friendly smile. They began to explain the process from A-Z on what makes Cater Express so different from all other event and catering companies. By the end, I wasn’t surprised why they were the UK’s most sought after. “It’s all about having a well-oiled system in place, understanding client needs then re-creating that experience. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a small or large birthday in your garden, anniversary, wedding, or corporate event, we treat each client with absolute consideration. We can make the magic happen for our clients, including exotic requests, from African singing dancers to opera-singing waiters, no matter the request, we will make it happen. Our services are affordable because we supply all services in-house and are not the middleman. We plan your entire event without the excessive fee of professional event planners. As all equipment, staff and services are supplied directly from us, we are a one-stop shop for all our client’s event’s needs.”

ADVERTORIAL It was evident that Cater Express provided luxury, but the most important thing I wanted to know as I’m sure a lot of people do, how much does all this cost? So, I requested a quote, there and then, 80 people Hog/Roast and BBQ with welcome drinks and cocktails from their stylish LED mobile bar. They began with a series of questions to ascertain detail, they asked about presentation, health & safety, garden layout, duration, the list of questions produced ideas that I didn’t even think of and in the end, expecting to re-mortgage my house to pay for all this, it was way cheaper than I anticipated, shockingly affordable. “Our Chefs have been trained and have worked at highend places such as the ‘Ritz’ and ‘Four Seasons’, our Event Managers have worked for global consultancy companies such as KPMG and Atkins, and our event staff, dressed in elegant company attire (bow ties and waist coats), have extensive professional experience and always provide a service with a smile. That’s what makes us different I believe, our process, presentation and price. You get the world, but you don’t have to pay for it!”

Now I understand, Cater Express over-delivers – when you expect and pay for a standard event and they turn up with Blossom Trees, Vintage Victorian Lamp posts and awardwinning food from Selfridges, it’s no surprise that the Houses of Commons, The High Commission, and major brands such as Superdrug, Autotrader, Ralph Lauren and British Airways choose Cater Express. It’s the same reason celebrities flock to their services. It’s the reason the South African Rugby Team chose them, and David from Hammersmith used them for throwing a 21st birthday party for his daughter. The reason is the same… you get an experience, not just a bog standard event. I’m no celebrity star, but I will certainly be using Cater Express, simply because they make you feel like one.

Thank you Cater Express for making our anniversary amazing, so remarkably special. We loved the Alice in Wonderland Afternoon Tea and your team was exceptional throughout. – Warwick Davis | | 0208 563 9543 Close Up Magazine // 7

ANISTON is *actually* fine After breaking the internet, what better way to prove she’s an absolute queen than by sharing the most insane pictures from her recent Interview Magazine cover on her 51st birthday.

Thanks to the powers of social media, earlier this year (after Jen broke the internet) we learnt that Kudrow, Cox and Aniston still have regular girls’ nights. Cox, who shared a snap of all three of the women, provided proof that when they sang along to “I’ll be there for you” all those years ago, they meant off-screen as well as on. The internet feels friendlier already.

Ever since her breakthrough role as Rachel Green on “Friends” back in 1994, Jennifer Aniston has become a household name.

Aniston celebrated her Instagram debut in October with a photo of her former co-stars. She opened up to Howard Stern about the reunion at Cox’s home over dinner. “Schwimmer was in town, and we all happened to have a window of time, so we all got together,” she said on Stern’s radio program. “Oh my God, we laughed so hard.”

Throughout the late 1990s, women everywhere tried to emulate “the Rachel,” Aniston’s signature hair look from the early episodes of the show. But even though Aniston’s hair has inspired trends ever since, it seems she’s not a fan of her most-famous cut. She has worked with stylist Chris McMillan ever since, but told Allure in 2011, “I love Chris, and he’s the bane of my existence at the same time because he started that damn Rachel, which was not my best look. How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I’ve ever seen.” In fact, Aniston couldn’t even style the look herself, so she was completely reliant on McMillan for the six months she rocked “the Rachel.”

“We are aware that some people were having issues following Jen’s profile,” an Instagram representative told CNN. Even so, she set a Guinness world record for accruing one million followers – it took her five hours and 16 minutes – which meant she beat the previous record set by @sussexroyal. During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she called herself “the most reluctant person to ever join Instagram”.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else as Rachel Green, but Aniston has previously told that she nearly swapped roles with co-star Courteney Cox. She said, “They wanted [Courteney Cox] to play Rachel. Unbeknownst to each other, I wanted to play Rachel and she wanted to play Monica. It worked out perfectly.”

I’ve failed. I’ve succeeded. I’ve overcome. I’ve, you know, I’ve stayed around. I’m still here.

Nowadays, to maintain her sleek, golden tresses, Aniston gets her hair done every five weeks. “I’m not gonna lie — I don’t want grey hair,” she told InStyle. Her go-to person in Hollywood is Michael Canalé, a co-creator of her iconic “The Rachel”. Right now, he says, her locks are paler than usual for her role on “The Morning Show” — and it suits her. “She loves being blonder.” It’s certainly an exciting time for Jennifer, who has returned to the TV late last year for Apple TV’s new show, The Morning Show. The actress is starring alongside Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell, and along with Reese, is one of the show’s executive producers. “It’s taken time for me to get where I am and I put a lot of work into my craft. I’ve failed. I’ve succeeded. I’ve overcome. I’ve, you know, I’ve stayed around. I’m still here,” Jennifer reflected. When it hasn’t been her day, her week, her month or even her year, Friends star Jennifer Aniston knows who to turn to – her dog. The actress shares custody of pitbull cross Sophie and terrier Clyde with her ex-husband Justin Theroux. And Jennifer said: “Men come and go, but there really is no relationship like the one you have with a dog. “The love of a dog is unconditional, and I really love that.” She said: “Our parting was very friendly because we are still good pals, so it worked out.” Jennifer and Justin, who divorced last year, were devastated in July when their white German Shepherd mix Dolly passed away. Talking to Dogs Monthly magazine, Jennifer said: “I had a slightly embarrassing moment with Dolly because I named her after Dolly Parton, a fabulous lady, great singer and performer. “I then worked with Dolly on a movie and said, ‘I named my dog after you’.

10 // Close Up Magazine

“It was meant as a compliment. Dolly laughed and said, ‘I would never have thought of doing that. I have never heard of a dog called Jennifer’. “I thought for a minute that she had felt insulted but she hadn’t – she loves dogs too.” After winning a SAG trophy for best actress in a TV drama series for her role in The Morning Show, the star — clad in a sheer ivory Dior by John Galliano dress — was snapped in a touchy-feely moment with ex-husband Brad Pitt. Their exchange nearly broke the internet and gave everyone two burning questions to mull over: “Will they get back together?” and “How the hell is that woman 50 years old?” Despite life’s slings and arrows — including her highly publicized divorce from Pitt in 2005 and separation from second husband Justin Theroux in 2018 — the all-American Aniston has hardly changed a bit since her breakout role in “Friends” more than 25 years ago. One year after the Golden Globe-winning series celebrated its 25th anniversary, the cast of Friends will officially reunite. Rumours of a reunion have been in the pipeline for months but now HBO Max has confirmed it will play host to Jennifer Anniston, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc. Each of the six main cast members took to Instagram to confirm the news. Matthew, Matt, David, Courteney, Lisa and Jennifer all shared a snap of themselves in character onto their respective social media pages. After that, the rest of the Friends-loving internet (aka most everyone with an Instagram account) seemed to completely lose all common sense and went wild with their responses. Fans celebrated, asked questions, and responded with varied emojis. The funniest reactions, though, were from Aniston’s celebrity peers, who turned out to be huge Friends fans, like everyone else.

Each one of the Friends stars simply captioned the post “it’s happening” before tagging their co-stars and HBO Max. HBO Max’s chief content officer Kevin Reilly explained the decision in a statement to Deadline on Friday. He said: “Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa and Matthew for a HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library.”

Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together.

The HBO boss continued: “I became aware of Friends when it was in the very early stages of development and then had the opportunity to work on the series many years later and have delighted in seeing it catch on with viewers generation after generation. It taps into an era when friends – and audiences – gathered together in real-time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans.” The special is predicted to be released in May 2020 along with all 236 episodes of the hit series when HBO Max launches in the USA. The Friends reunion will also see series creator Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane cross paths once again. The trio wrote and served as showrunners on the series during its globally successful decade-long run. Now, along with the six main cast members, they’ll serve as executive producers on the special. With the exception of the Instagram posts, the cast has remained relatively tight-lipped about what fans can expect from the special, but famous fans around the globe are already voicing their excitement at the project.

IT OUT Summer is fast approaching so what better time to start tightening that tummy! The benefits of a strong core however, go far beyond a sculpted stomach. When you have a strong core you have improved posture, improved balance, and you are less likely to suffer from lower back pain. Planks are by far one of the best bodyweight exercises to perform, not only do they work your entire core, it works your entire body. Here is one of my favourite core strengthening workouts from my Tone & Sculpt app for you to try.

Perform each exercise, one after the other with little to no rest. Rest for 2-3 minutes between rounds. Repeat 3 times.

1) Put the palms of your hands flat on the floor with your fingers extended forward. Your palms should get placed directly in line with the shoulders. Press your toes into the floor. Your feet should be no wider than shoulder width apart. The closer together you bring your feet the more your core gets activated.

PLANK HIP DIPS – 20 REPS 1) Start by positioning yourself into a plank position. 2) Rotate your hips from either side.

3) Try to dip as low as possible without touching the floor.

2) Extend at your elbows and press your body up. Have your arms almost entirely extended and the torso and legs off of the floor. 3) Engage your core by tightening it. Now jump your feet towards your hands. Your feet should land underneath the hips. Pause and hold this position for a second. 4) Jump your feet back to the starting position.

1) Starting by going into a plank position on the floor, supporting your weight on your toes and hands just wider than shoulder width apart.

1) Plant the hands directly under your shoulders, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart (as if you’re about to do a push-up).

2) Shift your body weight to the right side, twist to the side raising your left arm pointing to the ceiling.

2) Curl the toes into the floor and contract the glutes to stabilise the body. Your legs should be working in the move too; careful not to lock or hyperextend your knees.

3) Return to the starting position and alternate with both arms.

3) Keep your neck and spine by looking at a spot on the floor about a foot beyond the hands. Your head should be in line with your back. 4) Hold this position for the required time.

The Science of

Rosamund Pike discusses her motivations and the women that inspired her latest performance, in the drama Radioactive.

From the beginning of her screen career Rosamund Pike has been thrust into the spotlight. She made her Hollywood debut in one of the biggest franchises of all time, when she starred opposite Pierce Brosnan in 2002’s Die Another Day. Since then, she has proven herself to be an exciting and versatile actress on stage, screen and television, mixing big screen blockbusters like Jack Reacher and Johnny English Reborn with intricate dramas like Gone Girl and TV series Women In Love. Her latest work, Radioactive, sees her play the coveted role of Marie Curie, the famed physicist who pioneered research into radioactivity. She portrays Curie during her most prolific years, as well as the professional and romantic bond with her husband Pierre (played by Sam Riley). Financed by Amazon studios, it’s a prestige drama that fleshes out a story that the general public may not be as familiar with, and also celebrates the achievements of a pioneering woman in history, when in the past the achievements of men have been more focused on.

sincere, grief-racked love – that I had ever read. It just moved me to tears. I thought ‘my god, nobody knows this side of this woman’. Everything you see is this formidable, brilliant, quite austere and odd character, and there inside is this person with rivers of feeling and love. I thought how interesting, because now I’ve got two sides of this person, I just have to fill in the rest”. There was another woman who helped her bring Curie’s story to life, director Marjane Satrapi, whose films include Persepolis and Ryan Reynolds dark comedy The Voices. “When I met Marjane, maybe two years ago, I met this brilliant, idiosyncratic, original, funny, bold, daring woman and I thought ‘well if anyone can tell the story of another daring, brilliant, unusual, implacable woman then it’s Marjane’” she says fondly. “I think we kind of became kindred spirits in pursuit of finding the truth of Madame Curie, and I think that she was our lodestar, really, all the way through shooting. I hope you come to love her as much as we do”!

It’s an amazing opportunity to bring to life someone like Madame Curie, and enlighten people as to all of the amazing things that she did.

It’s an enormous task to take on a character who has such a prominent place in history. That task begins with research, and the Oscar nominee was taken by some of her first impressions of the real person. “I thought she was a very ‘busy’ person, focused on the task at hand at all times” she says at a Q&A for the film. “A lot of the clues came from the photographs that exist of her. Never once does she seem to be completely standing still and accepting of having her photograph taken, she always seems to be slightly annoyed that the process is going on! She’s usually in conversation with someone while the photograph is being taken, or hurrying to the next destination”. As her introduction to her character furthered, she found more resources that helped show the woman behind the headlines. “It was clues such as (the photographs), plus this document that came out about a year before we made the film, which hitherto had been kept completely quiet by the Curie family” she recalls. “It was a grief journal that she kept in the weeks and years after Pierre’s death. It was the most moving outpouring of love – true,

22 // Close Up Magazine

The combination of a fascinating subject and inspiring colleagues led Pike to believe that this could be a much larger, and more fulfilling project than she had ever anticipated. “It’s kind of exploded the confined of what I had hoped the film could be” she beams. “We’ve kind of taken it above and beyond, it’s brilliant”.

This is just the latest in a long line of real life people Pike has played, having portrayed true stories in 2016’s A United Kingdom, 2018’s Entebbe, and last year’s drama A Private War, where she played war journalist Marie Colvin. It’s a trend that the star acknowledges to be somewhat intentional, as they are often the roles with the most rewards. “A lot of the time in acting you get to embody qualities that you lack!” she says with a self deprecating smile. “It’s one of the great pleasures of it. On one level you think it’s an amazing opportunity to bring to life someone like Madame Curie, and enlighten people as to all of the amazing things that she did. It’s also a challenge, because people also have very strong opinions and can easily deem that your version is not their version Radioactive of the person. It’s a difficult balance, is released but it’s always rewarding to play a in cinema character like this.” 20th March

Q&A with JO MALONE’s Vice

President of Global Product Development, Celine Roux alongside the Lavender & Musk collection’s Master Perfumer Marie Salamagne

There are two home products in the collection. What was the concept behind these? Celine: This was actually one of the first ideas Marie and I developed. This Lavender & Musk accord worked so beautifully, and we fell in love with it, but when we tried it on the skin as a Cologne it didn’t work. We decided to evolve it into a home scent as a Pillow Mist and Diffuser, as an additional way to incorporate lavender into this collection. What is the story behind this scent combination? Marie: When I think about lavender I can smell the airy feeling of the flower. It reminds me of my childhood and how it is everywhere in your house, in every cupboard, hanging on the ceiling and folded between freshly washed sheets that have dried outside in the sun. It brings a sense of calm, reassurance and clarity to the home. I channelled those memories and combined lavender with a clear, luminous musk note to evoke the feeling and texture of fresh sheets on your skin after a shower. It speaks to everyone and it’s a familiar, comforting moment. How should you use the Pillow Mist? Marie: Two or three sprays straight onto your pillow – so simple! When we formulated it we made sure it was light enough and not overpowering. Over the years I’ve used lavender oil on my sheets and pillows so to elevate that ritual into a mist form I kept that simplicity but added a touch of complexity like you would find in a perfume. Not too heavy, not too fleeting – creates an atmosphere of freshness, softness and clarity, which is very comforting. Available at

DE ARMAS How Knives Out star Ana de Armas is conquering Hollywood.

Of all the many celebrated stars in Rian Johnson’s hit whodunit Knives Out, Ana de Armas has stood out as a name to watch in the future. She plays Marta, the caregiver for a wealthy novelist who becomes the focal point for a mystery when that novelist is murdered. It’s a tantalising performance in a film filled with strong characters, but the humble 31 year old passes all the praise on to the people behind the camera. “I can claim no credit for it” she says at a Q&A for the film, “because it’s all in the script. The character, Marta, she has no agenda. She is who she is, she has a big heart and she is just trying to protect her family, which is the most important thing for her”. For the actor, it was a chance to play a character of great contrasts. “She is in a very vulnerable place, but she is not someone that people can walk over” she explains. “So she spends the film defending herself with everything she’s got”.

I went from Thailand to Boston to audition for him in person, and that did it! Her path to the film was a little bit unusual, to say the least. “I was in Thailand, over there finishing another film” she recalls. “I was working there for six months and I was exhausted and just wanted to go home, and then I got an email from them asking if I wanted to audition for it.” So far, so simple, but location led to a very unique audition process. “We had a weird experience auditioning on Skype!” she recalls laughing. “I asked another actor who I was working with at the time to go through the lines with me, and Rian was on Skype directing me! That wasn’t enough, so I went from Thailand to Boston to audition for him in person, and that did it!” So, how do you capitalise on being the lead in one of the biggest hits of last year? By being cast in one of the biggest films of 2020! The actor is due to appear in Daniel Craig’s final Bond film, No Time To Die, next month. It’s a huge amount of success for a star who only began acting in American cinema five years ago. “I think it was Knock, Knock” she says of her first US movie, referencing the 2015 horror where she got to torture Keanu Reeves. “I think he enjoyed it!” she jokes.

DINNERS Whether you’re craving a comforting bangers and mash or a hearty steak, these dishes are perfect for a cosy night in.

Sticky sausages with cauliflower mash Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Total time: 40 minutes Serves 3 Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 6 Heck 97% Pork Sausages 400g pack shallots, peeled and halved 3 rosemary sprigs 300ml Cooks’ Ingredients Fresh Chicken Stock 1 tsp clear honey 1 heaped tbsp wholegrain mustard 1 cauliflower (about 1.2kg), base and leaves trimmed 2 garlic cloves, sliced 3 tbsp whole milk Small handful chopped flat leaf parsley, to serve Method Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and add the sausages, shallots and rosemary. Fry for 10 minutes, stirring regularly, until golden. Pour in the stock, honey and mustard; simmer for another 10 minutes until the sausages are cooked through with no pink meat remaining in the middle, and the sauce is sticky. Meanwhile, in a large, lidded saucepan, heat the remaining 1 tbsp oil over a medium heat. Halve the cauliflower, cut out and discard the tough core, then slice quite finely. Add to the pan with the garlic, season and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover and cook for another 10 minutes until completely tender. Uncover the cauliflower, add the milk and cook for another 5 minutes. Tip into a food processor and whizz until smooth (or use a stick blender in the pan); season with black pepper. Serve the sausages with the cauliflower mash and shallot gravy, plus steamed greens, if liked; garnish with the parsley.

Cook’s tip For a more full-bodied gravy, try swapping the chicken stock for pale ale or cider.

Porcini bavette steaks with mushrooms Preparation time: 10 minutes (once meat is at room temperature) Cooking time: 15 minutes Total time: 25 minutes Serves 2 Ingredients 275g pack 2 British beef bavette steaks, taken out of the fridge 30 minutes ahead of cooking 1 tsp Cooks’ Ingredients Porcini Mushroom Powder 2 tsp sesame oil 400g pack essential Waitrose Mashed Potato 200g sprouting broccoli, thick stems halved lengthways 1 tbsp unsalted butter 1 tbsp Cooks’ Ingredients Light Soya Sauce, plus extra to serve 200g pack Waitrose & Partners No.1 Mixed Exotic Mushrooms 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced Method Preheat the oven to very low, warm 3 plates and prepare all the ingredients. Rub the steaks with the porcini powder and 1 tsp oil; season and set aside to marinate for 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the mashed potato according to pack instructions. Steam the broccoli for 4-5 minutes until tender. Put a non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Sear the steaks for around 2 minutes on each side, depending on thickness, flipping after each minute. During the last 30 seconds, add 2 tsp butter to the pan, let it melt, then spoon over the meat a few times as it cooks. Lift the steaks onto a plate and splash with the soya sauce. Cover loosely and transfer to the oven. Add the remaining 1 tsp oil and butter to the hot pan, then toss in the mushrooms and garlic; season. Fry over a high heat for 2 minutes until golden; toss but allow the mushrooms to catch some colour. Slice the steaks across the grain, put on the warm plates and serve with the mushrooms and some of the resting juices, the mash and broccoli, and a dash more soya sauce, if liked.

Cook’s tip Try serving with fresh egg noodles, tossed with the cooked mushrooms and garlic, instead of the mash.

Pretty feather-iced

MOTHER’S DAY BISCUITS Treat your mum this Mother’s Day with these pretty pastel-coloured biscuits. The feather icing is an easy technique that adds a stylish touch.

Preparation time: 1 hour + 30 minutes chilling Cooking time: 10 minutes–12 minutes Total time: 1 hour 40 minutes–1 hour 42 minutes Serves 24 Ingredients 100g unsalted butter, softened 100g Waitrose Light Brown Fairtrade Muscovado Sugar 1 medium Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Egg, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 275g plain flour For the topping 250g Royal icing sugar Pink, blue, yellow food colouring Method Line 2 baking sheets with baking parchment. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, then add the flour. Bring the mixture together, then knead lightly and form it into a ball. Wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Roll out half the dough at a time on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a pound coin. Using a plain 7cm round cookie cutter, cut out 24 rounds and transfer them to the baking sheets. Bake for 10–12 minutes until pale golden. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool. Mix the icing sugar with 3 tbsp water to make a smooth icing. Put 2–3 tbsp of the icing into a piping bag fitted with a small plain nozzle. Divide the rest between three bowls. Add a little food colouring separately to each bowl to make up the 3 pastel colours. Spread 8 of the biscuits with blue icing. Pipe 5 lines of white icing at equal distances apart, then drag the tip of a cocktail stick across the white icing in alternate directions. Repeat with the pink and yellow icing on the remaining biscuits. Leave aside until the icing is set.

42 // Close Up Magazine

Cook’s tip The icing should be wet to get the best feathered effect. If it is drying too quickly, ice one or two biscuits at a time.

Preparation time: 30 minutes, plus chilling Cooking time: 0 minutes Total time: 30 minutes, plus chilling Vegetarian Makes 6 Ingredients 260g plain chocolate digestive biscuits 40g Waitrose Duchy Organic English Salted Butter, melted 250g jar Waitrose 1 Salted Caramel Dipping Sauce 2 or 3 Waitrose Duchy Organic Bananas, sliced 200ml Waitrose Duchy Organic Double Cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 10g organic dark chocolate, chilled Method Pulse the biscuits in a food processor until finely crushed. Divide the biscuit mix between the cases, pressing evenly and firmly with the back of a spoon. Chill for at least 2 hours or ideally overnight. Use the cling film to ease the bases out, then discard the cling film. Spread the caramel sauce on top, then add all but 6 of the banana slices, dividing evenly between the pies. Serve immediately or chill until ready to eat (the pies will keep for up to 24 hours).

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! @keepingupwithkaterina With everything in the news recently, I felt it only right to base my March column on mental health. I’ve spoken previously in my blog about how heightened my anxiety got after having Rico, literally hitting new levels I didn’t even know existed. Things have gotten easier and other things harder, I feel like parent anxiety is one of them things that literally “is what it is” and it’s about finding ways to deal and live with them to not make them a hindrance to your life. I found one of the biggest things I have done (and admittedly still sometimes do!) is compare myself to other mums and Rico to other children. I always think about how it must of been in my grandmothers day, it must of been so easy to just get on with your life and focus on yourself, without the constant flaunt on social media of everyone’s lives (she probably only had a couple women in the village she would see every now and again to compete with). Now, what really drove me to write about this, was the fact that this weekend was one of them weekends where I was the person who was making everything look perfect on Instagram when in reality it was a bit of a shit show. In all honesty I didn’t even realise what I’d portrayed against my reality until a friend pointed it out during a moan I was having. If you follow me on Instagram you may of seen I had the absolute pleasure of visiting a stunning safari park and was booked an experience to feed giraffes to celebrate my birthday. Throughout the day I would capture all the best moments on my Instagram, sharing the beautiful scenery, the

food and my time spent with Rico and Jamie. Behind the scenes was a total different story. In reality Rico was throwing himself on the floor if we had to wait longer than 5 minutes in a queue, he’d tantrumed his way into a late 6pm nap and just for the sake of wanting to eat dinner in peace I ended up sitting trying to eat in this posh restaurant with Rico sleeping on my chest in his pyjamas and odd socks (because he refused to wear the pair and I was honestly out of energy for the argument!). It was draining, tiring I was miserable and all in all it was very hard work, but nothing like that showed on anything I was posting. It’s so easy to get into the habit of looking into others lives when they’re so accessible to everyone nowadays and so easy (whether we like to admit it or not) to feel down or unworthy, or too fat, or not as successful, or not good enough based on societies standards or even the harsh standards we sometimes set for ourselves. Well this is my opportunity for any of you reading this who may need to hear it, you are enough, you’re doing a great job and you are loved. If you can be anything in this world, be kind. Rest in peace Caroline x

New in the MOVIES by James Luxford We’ve got horror, drama, comedy and a modern animated classic this month. Enjoy!

A big screen remake of the 70’s television mystery, re-purposed into a horror film by the people behind Get Out. The film centres around a luxury island where visitors are granted their biggest fantasies, but (as you might have guessed) there is a deadly twist in this paradise. A mish-mash of half baked ideas, it’s a mess of a movie that won’t do anything for those who remember the series, and even less for those who are unfamiliar with it. It’s hard to imagine anyone giving this island getaway a five star review.

It’s almost a decade since Daniel Radcliffe left the world’s of wizards in the last Harry Potter instalment, and in that time he’s filled his CV with interesting roles such as The Woman in Black and Kill Your Darlings. The latest is this true story about the escape from a notorious South African prison by a noted political activist (Radcliffe). Hard edged and featuring a passionate performance from Radcliffe, this is something that will show a different side to those who still remember him as The Boy Who Lived.

A comedy-drama based on the real life musical organisation The Military Wives. Kristen Scott-Thomas and Sharon Horgan play the wives of soldiers in Afghanistan, who form a choir in solidarity and find themselves at the centre of a global movement. Let’s be honest, this sort of movie has been done to death (Calendar Girls, The Full Monty, Finding Your Feet), but there is a certain charm to stories about people coming together to sing their way through adversity. Uplifting and life affirming, it’s a movie that has ‘crowdpleaser’ written all over it!

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland provide the voices in Pixar’s latest high concept tear jerker. They play elf brothers living in a world of fantasy, who draw on some long-forgotten magic to try and spend one last day with their late father. The problem is, they have only conjured up half of him! Another heart-felt tale from the masters of stories that will touch all who see them. As you might image, the final act has a lot of emotion and a pay-off that may leave you reaching for the tissues. However, it’s another masterful work from a historic animation studio.

19th March

Rosamund Pike takes on the role of a lifetime playing Marie Curie, the pioneering scientist that became famous for her discovery of radium, and a life of work that would ultimately lead to her demise. For such a rich and complicated life, the story is frustratingly straight-forward, more of an introduction to the person intended for casual viewers than a deep dive into her story. However, Pike, one of our finest and most underrated actors, elevates a simplistic script by giving it feeling.

Emily Blunt scored a huge hit in 2018 with A Quiet Place, the hushed horror written and directed by her husband John Krasinski (who also starred alongside her). Now she’s back for part two, returning to steer her children away from the sinister forces that hunt by sounds. The first film was a surprise smash thanks to a unique idea, but can Krasinski and co. expand beyond the initial premise and make the world of the first film a bit bigger? We’ll find out on the 19th!

Remember The Jesus from The Big Lebowski? This spin-off from that film sees the return of the foul mouthed bowler, played by John Turturro. Hours after being released from prison, The Jesus finds himself on an unexpected road trip involving stolen cars and a lady who comes along for the ride. Considering the popularity of the character from the cult classic, this seems like a subdued and lifeless adventure for him to return to. Perhaps its been too long a wait, but this isn’t the Lebowski companion piece many will be hoping for.

MULAN 27th March

This month Disney celebrate a decade of their live action remakes with Mulan, a remake of the 90’s film about a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight as part of the Ancient Chinese army. Trailers have suggested that this will be a much more serious affair than the cartoon, with Eddie Murphy’s dragon character Mushu apparently not being brought back for this iteration. Still, for Disney fans it will be another chance to see a classic come to life, and with last year’s Aladdin proving to be a billion Dollar success, there will be plenty of anticipation for this as well!

SHOW Expect history, views and sumptuous food on this Greek island that’s perfect for a fun-filled getaway.

Mykonos and Santorini may garner more headlines as the Greek islands to be seen on, but Rhodes is a real hidden gem. The year-round destination offers all the same ingredients, with sun-kissed beaches and rustic tavernas, but it stands out in terms of its wealth of archaeology, historical treasures and natural beauty, such as Butterfly Valley, home to thousands of butterflies of different species. Rhodes is fast becoming a popular family destination with childfriendly resorts, such as Levante Beach, and its topclass Mark Warner-run sporting facilities.

Stroll into Kolymbia, a charming low-key resort where the eucalyptus-lined main street has plenty of shops selling leather bags, jewellery, floaty kaftans and tie-dye dresses. Kolymbia is not only rich in authentic tavernas but is home to a wide variety of restaurants serving different cuisines too. Taverna Michel is supremely popular with the locals – which says more than any review ever could – while places like Ristorante-Pizzeria Rosso Di Sera serve up great Italian dishes, and Lovester Seafood Restaurant offers up all-you-can-eat shrimp. There’s both upmarket restaurants and more grounded places, meaning there’s likely to be good food to be had for any Rhodes holiday budget.

WHAT ARE THE MUST-DO SIGHTS? The main attraction in Rhodes Town is the magnificent UNESCOlisted Old Town – one of the best preserved inhabited medieval walled towns in Europe. Kids will love exploring the Grand Master’s Palace; walk along the top of the city walls and get lost in the maze of hundreds of little cobbled alleyways. If you don’t want to get lost, take a guided walking tour – and be sure to avoid the midday sun! Climb the 200 steps up to the impressive ancient Acropolis of Lindos that sits atop a rocky hill and commands panoramic views down over the town’s pretty whitecubed houses that tumble down the hillside to the sandy beach and turquoise sea. Reward yourself afterwards with a seafood risotto at nearby Ambrosia. WHERE CAN I STAY? Just half an hour’s drive south of Rhodes Airport, the low-rise Levante Beach Resort is the perfect place for an active holiday. An outpost of the Mark Warner holiday company, the stylish beachfront hotel boasts top-class sporting facilities and Britishrun childcare, with six pools (one just for sports and two indoor). Located on Rhodes’ longest beach, families are well catered for with a choice of room sizes (including 100 family suites and ten suites with their own pool) that come with either terraces or balconies. Make sure you dine at the hotel’s Amalthia restaurant. WHAT ARE THE MUST-DO SPORTS? Mark Warner offers a whole spectrum of activities for adults and kids at the hotel. You can try out a new sport such as windsurfing or paddle boarding at its free clinics, or sign up for one of its week-long tennis programmes, RYA-run sailing or PADI diving courses. Enjoy a guided kayak safari around the coastline, a sunrise yoga class or a sunset Zumba-inspired dance class held at a beachside cabana. Doing exercise with views of the twinkling sea is so much for enjoyable! For sporty types, there are guided mountain bike rides, while the water polo matches between staff and guests get very competitive! For those who want to have fun in the water, you will love being pulled through the waves by a speedboat on an inflatable ‘crazy sofa’!

FERRELL The Anchorman star takes a typically humourous look at his new movie.

He’s known for wackiness, having brought the world characters like Ron Burgundy and had audiences howling with laughter thanks to movies like Step Brothers and Old School. However, this month Will Ferrell is taking on something just as funny, but a little bit darker. He stars in Downhill as a man who has to re-evaluate his relationship with his wife (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) after bailing on her and their children during an avalanche. It’s a deliciously satirical look at getting older, marriage, and what it means to be happy. The film takes Ferrell’s amiable, oafish persona and gives a dark, selfish twist. As you might imagine, the story called for a number of skiing scenes, something Ferrell came to the project prepared for. “Except for my stunt, we all did our own skiing” he reveals at a Q&A for the film. “Julia was an absolute expert, and I skiied like a very solid, intermediate skiier!”

Let’s get some good old American elbow grease in there The film is a remake of a European movie called Force Majeure, and usually the stars and creatives are very quick to be reverential to the film that inspired their project while also distancing the two interpretations. Ferrell, always the joker, had a very different take. “I thought it was a real stinker!” he says, with a wry smile. “Let’s get some good old American elbow grease in there, get under the hood of that sucker and put in some horse power!” He was equally ready to poke some good-natured fun at the directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who previously had won Academy Awards for their work on The Descendants. “Well I’ve never worked with director who would actually bring their Oscar to work each day” he laughs. “Any objection from any of the actors, and they would just point to their Oscar!”

Downhill is out now.

Finally, what you might not know about Ferrell is that he is a lifelong football fan! A passionate Chelsea supporter, he reveals that had he had his way when he was younger, he might be known for something very different. “When I was in the fourth grade I wrote an essay that I was going to be a professional soccer player and a comedian in the off season” he says. “So dreams can come true!”

ESCAPES Home to grandiose architecture and gastronomic pleasures galore, this history-steeped French city is hard to resist.

STAY Set within acres of vineyards and with an idyllic hamlet feel, hotel Les Sources de Caudalie is the stuff of Francophile dreams. A hop and a skip from the heart of Bordeaux, it is an impeccably turned-out wine haven offering an abundance of ways to enjoy the grape, from the Vinothérapie Spa – the birthplace of Caudalie’s beauty products – to wine tasting at the 650-year-old Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Add to that the sculptured gardens nestled beside the serene lake, where otters can be spotted basking on the banks, and you’ll understand why guests are reluctant to leave.

INDULGE Vinothérapie Spa’s circulation-boosting Crushed Cabernet Scrub is a must-try, while the Caudalie Grand Facial will give you a seriously enviable glow. Posttreatment, float back down to earth with a mug of organic tea and spend the following few hours flitting between the swimming pool and the outdoor hot tub.

EXPLORE With its gothic architecture, Bordeaux’s imposing 12thcentury Cathédrale St André is well worth a visit, while along the Garonne River, the Place de la Bourse is a sight to behold, with its elegant central fountain and reflective mirror pool. Wine connoisseurs will feel right at home in La Cité du Vin wine museum, while if antiquing appeals, join locals at Brocante du Dimanche Saint-Michel on a Sunday morning and search for vintage treasures.

TASTE Dishing up rustic seasonal fare, Les Sources de Caudalie’s La Tale du Lavoir is the perfect sport for a long lunch – the vibe is pleasingly buzzy and the octopus with chorizo is nothing short of a triumph. For a more refined experience, snag a sought-after table at two-Michelin-starred La Grand’Vigne, where chef Nicolas Masse creates to-die-for tasting menus paired with a stellar array of local wines. In the centre of Bordeaux itself, Japanese noodle bar Restaurant Fufu offers a break from French cuisine (the tantanmen is worth the snaking queue), and find the best espresso in town at L’Alchimiste Café Boutique.

Lack of Legal Advice LEADS TO DISPUTE OVER PROPERTY By Natalie Amir – Partner, Residential Conveyancing

Couples can sometimes be tempted to enter into property transactions together without taking legal advice, on the basis that the love and trust between them will last forever. However, a High Court ruling strikingly showed how misguided such assumptions can be. During the course of a relationship that lasted more than 30 years and yielded three children, a five-bedroom house was purchased for over £1.5 million and placed in the woman’s sole name. The unmarried couple’s finances had become heavily intermingled whilst they were together, but they had never asked a lawyer to formalise their respective interests in the property. Following the end of the relationship, the man claimed to have a beneficial interest in the property. The woman, however, insisted that it had been agreed between them that it would belong to her alone. In ruling on the dispute, the Court found that the couple’s purchase of the property was wholly commercially driven, with a view to its development and onward sale. The man had contributed £660,000 towards the acquisition and that money was neither a gift nor a loan to the woman. The house had been placed in her name alone because the man wished to preserve his ability to raise mortgage finance so that he could buy another property.

It was the couple’s common intention throughout that the property was to be bought as part of an equal joint venture for their mutual benefit. They were thus each entitled to a 50 per cent stake in the property and three adjoining building plots which they had also acquired during their relationship. It is recommended that couples enter into a Declaration of Trust Deed which our residential department can assist with.
