CHRISTMAS SPIRIT “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” – and that’s because it is! November has disappeared faster than the last mince pie of the Christmas spread as December rolls around, bringing with it a change of weather. One thing that never changes during Christmas is the sound of Mariah Carey on the radio while you’re flicking through Close Up magazine trying to find the perfect colour scheme for your dining table. So, who better to feature on the cover of the Christmas Edition than the Queen of Christmas herself? What do you love best about Christmas? The delicious smells wafting from the kitchen, fairy lights becoming our main source of illumination and that repeated rendition of “Jingle Bells” in every shop as Bublé emerges from hibernation just in time for the festive season. I even enjoy the frustration of sitting on my living room floor surrounded by awkwardly-cut wrapping paper, cello tape stuck on my clothes, and a light dusting of glitter on every conceivable surface as I attempt to ‘neatly’ wrap a present for the hundredth time.
Fashion Page 18
So much effort from everyone in the team goes into this fabulous festive edition, as well as the contributors. For me, it captures all that’s beautiful about the festivities sparkling on the horizon. In the spirit of working to this deadline we have created some gorgeous last-minute decorating schemes to instantly fill your home with Christmas cheer. This issue we are asking you to pause for a moment, and think about having a (slightly more) meaningful Christmas. As well as shopping (keep an eye out for 40 different gift ideas!), through the pages you will find some more memorable ideas to enjoy the festivities such as at-home fun with the kids on page 44, and Christmas markets to visit on page 60.

For all the Insta-quotes online, there is one that resonates with me – don’t just buy presents, be present. Partly because you can be so busy getting the roast potatoes perfect you miss the fun of dinner itself. So, what I’d really like, is just a day where everyone is fully present. Wherever you are for Christmas, and whatever you like to do, I hope you get to do it, too. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year from me and the team at Close Up magazine.

CAREY The temperatures are dipping, and twinkling lights are being hung, but nothing confirms that the holiday season is in full swing as cogently as Mariah Carey’s now-iconic holiday classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
12 // Close Up Magazine
The festive track has consistently dominated the holiday music charts since it made its joyous debut in 1994. Perhaps even more impressive is the Christmas song’s ability to be beloved throughout this time period. Now, 25 years and endless screenings of Love Actually later, the song has become one of the ultimate modern Christmas anthems, unrivalled by any of its contemporary peers and more than able to hold its own with long-time favourites of the holiday canon. In 2015, Slate reported that the song’s seemingly magic ability to put you in a festive holiday mood is actually because of its dulcet harmony, which contains at least 13 distinct chords, including a specific minor subdominant chord, which they dub “the most Christmassy chord of all” and is found in songs like Irving Berlin’s classic “White Christmas.”
Many, including Mariah, would say that she’s more than earned the right to demand exactly what she wants. This is the woman who entered the music business as an ingenue three decades ago, broke tons of records, and still, to this day, has produced more number one Billboard Hot 100 hits than any other female artist in history. This is the woman who owned the entire ’90s: Hearing just one note from “Vision of Love,” “Always Be My Baby,” “Hero,” “Honey,” or “Heartbreaker” is enough to send elderly millennials straight back to the glory days.
I’ve sung Christmas songs since I was a little girl. I used to go Christmas carolling.
Carey, an individual known for her penchant for being “festive,” has shared many times that the song’s origin came out of her deep love for the holiday.
According to People, when the song debuted, Carey noted her love for the holiday and its musical traditions: “I’m a very festive person and I love the holidays. I’ve sung Christmas songs since I was a little girl. I used to go Christmas carolling.”
This is the woman who’s kept going ever since—and not necessarily by reinventing herself. There is only one Mariah, after all, and she’s ageless (literally ageless. Not even the internet knows how old she is for sure.) Instead, she’s stayed relevant by hustling to intentionally adapt along the way.
Mariah grew up on Long Island, outside New York City. She has previously spoken about herself as a biracial girl—a mix of African-American, Venezuelan, and Irish—with divorced parents and financial challenges. At the time, “people didn’t understand who I was, what I was, my ethnicity, the fact that we didn’t have money.”
Close Up Magazine // 13
Her rocky childhood is one of the reasons she loves Christmas so much. “As a kid, I always hoped for great Christmases, and we didn’t have them,” she remembers. “My brother and sister would come back to wherever I was with my mom, and they’d be fighting and ruining the holiday. I would still be like, you know what? I just want to have the best time.” She eventually got that best time: This year marks the 25th anniversary of “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the most popular holiday song in modern history—it’s estimated to have netted Mariah more than $60 million—and she now pours her heart into the season for her children. “We do everything that I always wanted to do as a kid.”
Still, she managed to create 6 number one albums and 18 number one singles (many of which she cowrote), win five Grammys, and dominate the music world with her rare fiveoctave vocal range. The singer—who admitted to binge-watching How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal also revealed to BuzzFeed that her favourite board game is Taboo. “I love Balderdash, too. I’m actually really good at Balderdash and no one wants to play that game with me. Especially the movies category; I don’t want to give away my secrets, but I am pretty good at that category.” Speaking of movies, Carey was also asked which Plastic from Mean Girls she would want as her BFF. The answer was obvious. “Regina George—you have to be on her good side,” the singer said. “Honestly, I would just want to be her; she’s the best.”
As a kid, I always hoped for great Christmases, and we didn’t have them.
As a teen, Mariah waitressed to make ends meet and spent most of her free time writing songs. After putting a demo tape together, she managed to get it in the hands of Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola. The titan of the industry—he worked with Michael Jackson and Celine Dion and took a very young Mariah under his very powerful wing. Their relationship quickly turned romantic, despite a 20-year age difference, and the two married soon after her self-titled debut album became the best-selling record of 1991.
14 // Close Up Magazine
When asked about her “favourite thing to do to make you feel fabulous,” in a previous interview, Carey said, “I don’t know dahhling, but it must be feeling ‘festive.’”

My favourite celebrity look this December is being rocked by Kim Kardashian West. Kim is wearing bouncy hair with more fullness than styles she has worn this past summer thanks to her hairstylist Chris Appleton. With my clients I’m bringing fullness and glam into their hair, but still keeping texture. I always say with hair I like to cause GLAMAGE not damage.
December to me is all very festive, happy and tis the season to be glam! Whether its a December red carpet or your Christmas party hair. Keep the hair full and bouncy this Christmas whether your hair is short or long, bounce is in!
Product of the month
A fun hair tip to glam up your usual hair style for day and night are headbands and accessories from MYKITSCH, they have all sorts of styles from sparkling clips to leather wet look headbands!

My favourite tool for texture at the moment is the Mark Hill Pick ’N’ Mix wand which has different attachable barrels to create multiple looks with hair to suit what mood you’re in. A definite must have tool I use on all my wigs and celebrity clients has to be the Dyson supersonic hairdryer. It will change your life!! Ha ha. HIP REPLACEMENTS Get back to doing what you love quicker.
If you are thinking about having a hip replacement, chances are that you want an end to the pain and discomfort, the smallest scar possible, an easy hospital stay and to be back on your feet and back to your normal life as quickly as you can.
The result is a much more straight forward recovery, as the muscles do not need to heal. “Moving the muscles out of the way means that once the operation is over, everything just falls back into its normal place,” he said. In addition, at around 8-10cms, the scar associated with an anterior hip replacement is a third smaller that the scar following a traditional technique. The anterior scar can even be angled, so that it follows the natural join between the body and the top of the leg – giving it the name of the ‘bikini’ incision. This is a popular option for people who have concerns about the appearance of a surgery scar.
The good news is that you could have just that. Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr Simon Mellor, of BMI Hendon, Kings Oak and Cavell hospitals in North London, specialises in a type of hip replacement surgery called anterior approach. This means that, unlike conventional techniques, which involve an incision and scar towards the side of the buttocks, he instead accesses the joint from the front.
Mr Mellor has been performing anterior hip replacements for eight years, preferring it over other methods, because of the shorter recovery and rehabilitation time for patients, a reduced risk of dislocating the replacement joint and the absence of muscle damage, as well as the benefits in the operating theatre of having the patient in a more stable position, rather than needing to angle them. This stability further allows him to use ‘live’ x-ray throughout the procedure, for increased accuracy, in the same way as robotic surgery.
Doing hip replacements this way allows him to move the muscles and tendons to one side, rather than splitting through the tough buttock (gluteus) muscle and detaching the tendons.
Mr Mellor has found anterior hip replacements give his patients the best outcomes he can provide them. He is now training other doctors in this technique, both in the UK and overseas.
If you are thinking of a hip replacement, you could book an appointment with Mr Mellor or any other BMI Orthopaedic Consultant by calling 0808 101 0337 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org

CONTROVERSY Charlize Theron discusses the motivations behind her new film Bombshell, and making a movie out of real-life drama.
Oscar winner Charlize Theron has become a can’t miss superstar over the course of her career. Whether it’s multibillion dollar blockbusters like The Fate of The Furious, grimy action hits like Mad Max Fury Road and Atomic Blonde, comedies like Long Shot, or award magnets like Monster, it seems the South African star can fit into whatever role she chooses. In January she takes on the role of Megyn Kelly in Bombshell, the story of the real life trio of women who exposed Fox News founder Roger Ailes (played by John Lithgow) of sexual harrassment. Theron co-stars with Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie in a film that has been tipped for the big awards during Oscar season as some have compared the film to hits like The Big Short and last year’s Vice.
it and you think ‘this would be a good idea’ (for a movie) – this really happened!” She was also drawn to an opportunity to tell a story from a different perspective. “I am always interested in stories that have some kind of transparency about what it really is to be a woman” she says. “All of the complexities, all of the f***d-up-ness, all of the messiness, that’s when we’re telling the truth of who women really are”. At the heart of the film is the idea of modern attitudes toward women in the workplace. “I think we all know the mindset of when a man is ambitious, it’s a good thing. When a woman is ambitious, it’s not so good, she’s probably a b*tch!” she says. “That’s still something that, systemically, is a problem of how we view women in the workplace. Somehow, it has to be so different if you’re a woman versus a man”. The film then became a chance to change that narrative, using her star power to tell the type of story she would like to see.
I am always interested in stories that have some kind of transparency about what it really is to be a woman
“(The movie) was sent to my company by (studio) Annapurna” the star recalls during a Q&A for the film. “They said ‘would you guys be interested in producing this, and would you maybe want to play Megyn?’ The first part of that was a no-brainer: we knew this was an important story to tell right now, and as a company that’s always what we’re looking for. The other side took a little longer!”
It was the film’s eventual director, Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet The Parents) who would prove to be the person who convinced her. “Strangely, I was developing something with Jay Roach, and so I was seeing him every single day of my life for a good three months” she says. “He’s a really good friend, and I gave him the script and said ‘can you tell me what you think of this? I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around playing Megyn’. He called me three hours later and said ‘you have to do this!’ and I was like ‘will you do it with me??’ and that was how it all started”. The appeal of the project was obvious in how timely this story had become. Over the past few years the way that women have been treated in the workplace, particularly in Hollywood, has come under greater scrutiny. “It was in the story” she exclaimed when asked about what made her say yes to the film. “You read
This perspective also gave her the opportunity to connect with the character she was playing in a more direct way. While they come from different parts of the world, and work in different industries, Theron found something of herself in Kelly’s motivations. “I relate to Megyn Kelly’s ambition, her drive, and her need to want to live her full potential” she admits. “I completely relate to that, and also how those qualities can be turned on you so quickly if you step just a little out of place”. The real life Kelly is a household name in America. A news presenter who has moderated Presidential debates, she made headlines following crude remarks by then-Presidential Candidate Donald Trump. With such a familiar face and voice, many actors would have chosen to stay in character constantly while filming. “I’m still in character!” Theron jokes, before revealing that the realities of the part made that impossible. “That was exhausting” she says. “I actually hurt my vocal cords speaking like her. She speaks really fast, and in a Bombshell very deep register. I had to take three is released weeks off because I busted my vocal 17th January cords trying to sound like her. So no, 2020 I was definitely not in character the whole time!”

If you want to go shopping without the kids, why not ask a friend to babysit for the day and return the favour later on in the month so that they can do the same.
Let the countdown BEGIN With only a few weeks to go before the big event, there’s plenty to be getting on with, but make sure your first job is to get the advent calendar out. MAC’s advent calendar last year was super successful and created a real stir. The good news is, it’s back and absolutely everyone wants it!

We can’t help but notice the abundance of pearls popping up all over our feeds. From dresses and jumpers laced with pearl cuffs, to pearly bags, pearl studded biker boots and pearl head bands – the high street has gone pearl mad! Jessica Alba proves perfectly that too much is never enough as she wore this stunning Ralph and Russo cocktail dress completely embellished with crystal white pearls, with a head band to match. Try out the look with a sleek black dress, an oversized pearl head band and a red lip for a flirty festive look.
SEXY SNAKE If you have a phobia of snakes, look away now! Snake print is taking over the fashion scene in the form of jackets, dresses, boots and everything in between. The Little Mix girls show us how it’s done in their full snake outfits fresh from their collaboration with Pretty Little Thing. If a snake bralette and matching high waist trousers aren’t your thing, try the look with a plain oversized jumper dress and a pair of snake print knee high boots. Try not to play it safe by sticking with neutrals – bright versions are completely acceptable, and encouraged!

Cook’s tip Make up to 24 hours ahead of serving and keep chilled. Reheat for 15 minutes until warmed all the way through.
Mince pie streusel tart Preparation time: 20 minutes, plus chilling and cooling Cooking time: 45 minutes Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes, plus chilling and cooling Serves 8 Ingredients 1 Jus-Rol Shortcrust Pastry Sheet 35g plain flour 35g light brown soft sugar 35g jumbo rolled oats 35g unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes 1 easy peeler mandarin, zest 1-2 x 410g jars traditional Christmas mincemeat Method Unroll the pastry sheet and use to line a 20cm fluted loose-bottomed tart case (you may need to roll it out a little to help it fit). Leave any extra pastry hanging over the edges and lightly prick the base with a fork. Line the case with a large circle of scrunched-up then smoothed-out baking parchment. Fill with baking beans, then chill for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Blind bake the pastry case for 15 minutes, then carefully lift out the parchment and beans and bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool slightly. Meanwhile, make the streusel topping. Put the flour, sugar, oats, butter and mandarin zest in a mixing bowl with a pinch of salt, then rub together with your fingers to make a clumpy crumble. Use a serrated knife to trim the excess pastry from the case. Spoon in the mincemeat, leaving a gap about 0.3cm at the top. (Depending on your tin, you might not need the second jar.) Sprinkle over the streusel and bake for 20 minutes. Serve cool, dusted with icing sugar, if liked.
Cook’s tip For even more festive flavour, try using beautifully almondy Waitrose & Partners Amaretto Mincemeat.

Katerina Mum to Rico and blogger to all! www.keepingupwithkaterina.com @keepingupwithkaterina Ahh Christmas - it really is the most wonderful time of the year isnt it? (And the most expensive for most of us too!) Not only is there lots to buy, but there always seems to be a night out, Christmas do, or a cute lunch that you just can’t resist – ah go on then, it’s Christmas right? This was pre-mum problems, now I have all of that as well as a Santa Grotto in every postcode, meet and greet a reindeer, a Christmas attraction or ride in every shopping centre and let’s not forget not being able to pop to Tesco without a tantrum on every aisle we walk down because of all the toys on the shelf that my dotting terrific two-year-old just cannot resist. But as well as all the lovely and probably overpriced things to do at Christmas – there’s also some wonderful things you can do at home with your little ones that won’t cost an arm and a leg. Enjoy my top five things to do! 1. Make a Christmas Inspired Lucky Dip Write down different Christmas activities you can do at home, and let your child pick out of the pot for something to do on that day. The fun comes from the magic of not knowing what they’re going to pick and knowing that whatever it is (which can include making a Christmas inspired hot chocolate, acting out a Christmas book or watching a Christmas film) it will be a surprise and full of fun! 2. Booster Buddy Box for Hours of Educational Fun Booster Buddy is an educational subscription box for children from age 7-11, in primary school years 3-6. Each box lasts a month (for only £20!) and includes many different activities and worksheets perfect to keep your little ones busy in an educational way! www.boosterbuddybox.co.uk

3. The Great Christmas Bake off! Turn your kitchen into the bake off tent and enjoy making festive bakes with your children. Print off the recipe and get them to help you make gingerbread biscuits, cupcakes or even a fruit cake and really show off their skills. Cheap and guaranteed to take an afternoon up (especially getting them to tidy it all up!) 4. Make Your Own Christmas Decorations There are so many different decorations you can make for your home with your children, including making their own bauble! Watch them get creative and then see the pride in them hanging their DIY decoration up on the tree for everyone to see! Places like The Range, Home Bargains, B&M and the pound shop have so many bits to work with around this time of year which is great. 5. Acts of Kindness – and a Clear Out! In preparation of all the lovely new clothes and toys your child is most likely to receive at Christmas, why not get them to help you clear out their unwanted bits and gift them to a charity shop or for the homeless this Christmas. A perfect chance for a clear out and also to show them that Christmas is not only about receiving, but it’s the perfect time of year for giving!

ENCHANTED Eltham Follow SANTA’S JOURNEY AROUND LONDON on this charming Instagram account Santa Claus isn’t coming to town — if Instagram is anything to go by, he’s already here. Charming Instagram account @santaclauslondon is back in the festive swing of things, depicting the man in red at various landmarks around the capital, often with eerily empty streets as a backdrop. It’s been going for a couple of years, and is the work of photographer Neil Andrews, who runs the account with help from some friends (because obviously the real Santa is too busy at this time of year to manage his own Instagram).

Our tips for the perfect
CHRISTMAS DINNER Don’t panic over the parsnips – read our tips to ensure your Christmas meal goes without a hitch!
Start the day RIGHT Make sure you eat a good hearty breakfast. You might be knocking back the booze, so you’ll want to make sure you have a lined stomach to get you through the long day.
Make sure EVERYTHING fits It might sound obvious but limited oven space can be a real issue on Christmas day. Plan when and where everything will be cooked and don’t forget to make sure your roasting tins are the right size.
Delegation IS KEY Just because you’re hosting, doesn’t mean the feasters can’t help out. Time to delegate! One friend can peel the spuds while the creative ones can dress the table – you have a ten pound turkey to tend to after all.
Make it in ADVANCE Anything that can be made in advance, should be. Whether it’s a chocolate log chilling in the freezer or a tray of stuffing balls in the fridge waiting to be cooked, anything you can prepare before the big day will make the Christmas meal itself a lot easier and less stressful for you.
DON’T FORGET about the gravy Too often the gravy gets overlooked, or there just isn’t enough to cover the five hundred potatoes on offer. Add the roasting juices and some redcurrant jelly for extra flavour and make sure you have enough for seconds, if not thirds!
The CRISPIER the BETTER When boiling your potatoes, add half a teaspoon of baking soda to the water. This will help to give them fluffier edges – hence more crispy bits when they come out the oven – delicious!
If all else FAILS
This one might sound obvious, but make sure you know the correct methods and timings before attempting to prepare a Christmas meal for fifteen guests. How long will the veg take to peel? What time does the turkey need to go in the oven? If you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail!
The turkey is overcooked, there are five pans bubbling over on the hob and you’ve just spilt the gravy. It’s all getting a bit much, but do not panic. Sit back, pour yourself a large glass of red or grab the Ferrero Rochers, and give yourself a pat on the back – you’ve done your best!

INDULGENCE December isn’t the month to be counting calories, and just as well with these delicious treats. Perfect for group gatherings or family feasts alike.
Sausage, cranberry & chestnut rolls The traditional Christmas flavours of chestnut and cranberry are combined perfectly in these sausage rolls. Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 20-25 minutes Total time: 40-45 minutes Makes 16 Ingredients 400g Waitrose Free Range Pork Sausages 50g Waitrose Christmas Chestnuts, cooked according to pack instructions, and chopped 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh sage 320g all butter puff pastry sheet 2 tbsp Colman’s Cranberry Sauce 1 small Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Egg, beaten, for glazing Method Preheat the oven to 190°C, gas mark 5. Using a sharp knife, slice the sausage skins and squeeze out the sausagemeat into a bowl. Stir in the chestnuts and sage. Unroll the pastry on a lightly floured work surface and cut it in half lengthways. Spoon the cranberry sauce down the centre of each half. Divide the sausagemeat mixture in half and roll each batch into a long sausage the same length as the pastry. Lay each half on top of the cranberry sauce. Brush the edges of the pastry with a little beaten egg. Fold the pastry over the sausage, then roll it over so that the join is underneath. Cut each piece into 8 sausage rolls. Line 2 baking sheets with baking parchment and transfer the sausage rolls onto them, keeping the pastry join at the bottom. Brush a little more egg over the top and bake for 20–25 minutes, until the sausagemeat is cooked through. Transfer to a wire rack to cool before serving.
50 // Close Up Magazine
Cook’s tip For a more savoury flavour, try swapping the cranberry sauce for wholegrain mustard, or make a selection of both flavours.
Baileys crème brûlée Preparation time: 10 minutes + chilling Cooking time: 40-45 minutes Total time: 50-55 minutes + chilling Serves 6 Vegetarian Ingredients 600ml double cream 200ml semi-skimmed milk 6 medium Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Egg yolks 30g caster sugar 4 tbsp Baileys Irish Cream 3 tbsp demerara sugar Method Preheat the oven to 150°C, gas mark 2. Pour the cream and milk into a saucepan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside for 10 minutes. In a heatproof bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together with a balloon whisk until combined. Stir in the cream mixture and Baileys and pour into 6 small ramekins. Put the ramekins in a roasting tin and add enough cold water to the tin to come two thirds of the way up the sides of the ramekins. Carefully put the roasting tin in the oven and cook for 30–40 minutes, or until just set. Remove from the tin and leave to cool, then chill for 2 hours. Preheat the grill to hot. Sprinkle the demerara sugar in an even layer over the brûlées and grill until the sugar has melted, about 2 minutes. Leave to cool until the sugar has set, then serve straight away.
Cook’s tip If you have a cook’s blowtorch, use it instead of the grill to melt the sugar on top of the brûlées as it’s much easier to control the heat.

NEW YOU? Whether it’s taking up a new exercise regime, quitting smoking, or cutting down on the chocolate bars, sticking to a New Year’s resolution can be a daunting prospect. Read our tips on how to deal with the hurdles and avoid that feeling of failure if things don’t go to plan.
Start SMALL Make sure your initial resolutions are realistic. Rather than declaring you will never eat dessert again, perhaps try including more fruit and veg into your diet. Or start by sticking to your two favourite gym classes a week rather than aiming to work out every single day of January – you may not be able to maintain such extreme changes and could end up giving up quickly.
Be SPECIFIC If you have a set goal in mind, with a plan of how you are going to achieve it, you are more likely to be successful. Vague goals could lead to a lack of motivation and therefore you are more likely to give up if things don’t go to plan.
ONE STEP at a Time Unhealthy habits are formed over time. Therefore undoing these habits may also take some time. Don’t feel as though you have to overhaul your whole life on January 1st. Try to improve one thing at a time so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.
54 // Close Up Magazine
COMMUNICATION is Key Share your resolutions and aims with family and friends. That way, they will be able to guide and support you if the going gets tough and keep you on the right path when you feel like giving up. If you feel you need extra help, perhaps join a support group, or distract yourself with a new healthy activity. Sharing your experience and struggle with others going through the same thing often makes resolutions easier to stick to.
DON’T be Too Hard on Yourself Remember, no one is perfect! Don’t feel you have failed and give up just because you missed a couple of gym classes, or had a cheeky fish and chips on Friday. Everyone has good and bad days, simply get back on track and don’t let it be the reason you forget about your resolution completely. If you accept from the beginning that there will be small missteps, you are far more likely to succeed in the long run.

STEWART The star talks about her new role, and being back in the spotlight
About a decade ago Kristen Stewart’s face was everywhere as the young star of the Twilight franchise. Since leaving the role of Bella Swan almost eight years ago, the actor has walked a different career path, appearing mainly in independent films, such as this month’s Seberg. She plays iconic US actress Jean Seberg, in the story of how she was under surveillance by the government for her connections to activist groups.
While Stewart had heard of the actor prior to accepting the role, the research for the part opened a new world to her. “I only knew her as a sort of image, this woman who dragged her thumb across her lips” she says at a press conference for the film. “The cool thing about this story is that I didn’t realise all this hunger and exuberance behind her eyes, this need to connect with other people that made her jump from the screen. This is substantiated by a lot of other things she believes in, being compassionate and humanitarian, it really rocked her, the platform turned against her”.
I think things are so polarised right now, the whole “us” and “them” aspect of it The film’s subject matter relates to many issues in the political world today, particularly surveillance and the role of the celebrity in political discourse. “I think things are so polarised right now, the whole “us” and “them” aspect of it” Stewart muses. “It’s kind of a good thing for us if you want to personalise things and feel like a real individual in a political climate. There are really two very distinct sides. Whether or not you are screaming from a soapbox, we wear our politics now because of how generalised they are. It’s not like a complex issue. It seems so black and white”. Finally, 2019 has seen something of a revival of the actor’s blockbuster career, starring in the reboot of the Charlie’s Angels franchise in November. “Yeah I’m ready for all of it” she jokes when asked if she’s ready for the mainstream gaze again. “I’m so proud of the people that I worked with recently. I’m not intimidated by it at all. I would really like to reach. I’m not really thinking Seberg about it in that way. You have to is released step up… step so far out of yourself 3rd January to see it that way. I’d be depriving 2020 myself of such a cool experience”.

New in the MOVIES by James Luxford It’s been a big decade for movies – the rise of Marvel, the rebirth of Star Wars, and Hollywood being held accountable for its dark past. Still, there’s no time to look back as we profile the best 2019 has left to offer, as well as some big January releases. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! James
THE PARTY’S JUST BEGINNING 1st December
Karen Gillan may be known for family-friendly fare such as Doctor Who and The Avengers films, but she’s hard hitting here as a troubled twentysomething haunted by the death of her best friend. The actress writes, directs, and stars in a hard-hitting story of loss and depression, that looks at the quiet desperation many people feel. It’s not an easy watch at times, but does showcase Gillan’s abilities both in front and behind the camera. One to seek out at your local art house cinema.
HHHHH HONEY BOY 6th December
Shia LaBeouf takes the unusual step of playing his own father (well, it’s not the strangest thing he’s done!) in this film loosely based on his own life. Lucas Hedges plays a Hollywood star grappling with his demons and reconciling with his father (LaBeouf) after a childhood of abuse. At times the drama feels like watching a therapy session, but the writing and performances are never anything less than honest. Proof that beneath the headlines, LaBeouf remains an intriguing film making talent.
HHHHH LUCY IN THE SKY 6th December
Natalie Portman stars in this drama loosely based on a true story. She plays Lucy, a celebrated astronaut who begins to lose her grip on reality when her personal life unravels back on Earth. The film has received negative press due to its deviation from the story that inspired it, the worst thing about the film is not the inaccuracy – it’s the jumbled storytelling. Portman is a strong actor and gives it everything she’s got in the lead, but she’s lost in orbit as part of a story that feels slow and uninviting.
HHHHH PLAYING WITH FIRE 26th December
A broad family comedy starring former wrestler John Cena as the leader of a firehouse charged with looking after three siblings whom they rescue from a fire. The ‘tough guy becomes a babysitter’ comedy is a bit exhausted at this point – Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all done this before, and better. A series of sketches more than a movie, the film is charming in places but won’t live long in your memory. Take the kids to see Frozen II (again) instead.

Not content with directing Marvel movies and appearing in new Star Wars show The Mandalorian, Taiki Waititi courts controversy in this satire about a young German boy living in the 1940’s who seeks moral guidance from an imaginary version of Adolf Hitler (played by Waititi). Yep, the comedy goes in some dark directions – think South Park more than Thor Ragnarok. However, while it may push the envelope too far for some, there is an astute message in there preaching against hatred. Brash but intelligent comedy.
We haven’t seen a film from Sam Mendes since 2015’s Bond hit Spectre, however he returns in January with a film that will surely put itself right at the front for Oscar contention. Set during the First World War, 1917 is a rescue story about two young soldiers who are tasked with an impossible mission to deliver a message to a battalion that warns of an ambush. If they succeed, they will save thousands of lives. Based on a story told to a young Mendes by his grandfather, the film should be an awards magnet and possibly a classic of the war movie genre.
BAD BOYS FOR LIFE
Sets in the 1890’s, Robert Pattinson plays a lighthouse keeper who slowly descends into madness alongside his superior (Willem Dafoe) during one turbulent winter. Surreal and at times terrifying, Pattinson and Dafoe deliver an acting masterclass as they try to outcrazy each other in Robert Eggers’ strange and brilliant thriller. If your only exposure to movies is Marvel films this may be a little bit too ‘out there’, and it’s certainly not for anyone with a weak stomach! However, for lovers of left field independent fare, this will be an absolute delight.
Twenty five years after the original film, and seventeen after its 2003 sequel, the Bad Boys are back together! Now feeling their age, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return as old school cops looking to take down a drug lord. It’s an interesting move for Smith, who doesn’t generally appear in sequels to his films (this and Men In Black are the only exceptions). It also is the first film not to feature action king Michael Bay behind the camera. However, if they can rekindle the old magic this will certainly be a film that starts the decade off with a bang.

LABEOUF The Hollywood rebel talks about the personal connection to his new film.
It’s hard to think of a more interesting career trajectory than Shia LaBeouf. Chosen as a star of the future by the likes of Steven Spielberg, the Transformers star took a different path, making controversial art and hitting the headlines with his erratic behaviour. He’s turned some of that turbulence into cinema with new film Honey Boy, inspired by his experiences with his father. “I hit a wall in my life where I wound up getting arrested” he says at a Q&A for the film. “I was shooting a movie in Georgia, and when I got arrested I was faced with either seven years in prison for terrorising this police officer, or go to this mental institution. I went to this mental institution in Connecticut, this court-ordered place, and I’m there about two weeks and they say ‘hey, you’ve got PTSD, but we’ve got a solution for you. That solution is exposure therapy’. Exposure therapy is sort of like where you get in a room with a therapist and you act out the dark parts. So I was doing this, recording it, listening to it at night, and they would give you a computer once a week and I would transcribe all these audio notes into script form”.
I was thinking that I wasn’t going to be an actor any more ...That was kind of a dead thing for me That script would form the basis of Honey Boy, about a young actor (Lucas Hedges) working through his difficult past and differences with his father (a fictional version of LaBeouf’s father, played by LaBeouf himself). However, it was a long time before he was convinced the script would make a good film. “I was thinking that I wasn’t going to be an actor any more” he reveals. “That was kind of a dead thing for me”. The film has won rave reviews, and has offered a kind of catharsis for LaBeouf as it brought reconciliation into his life. “I hadn’t talked to my dad in seven years” he recalls. “My therapist said ‘hey you should go and see your dad’. I’m the type where I probably wouldn’t have been motivated to do it unless my craft was on the line… so God, The Universe, whatever you want to call it put me in the position where I was motivated to go out to Costa Rica to see my dad. He was very sweet when I got there, the fight had gone between us, and I read him these pages. It re-started our relationship”.

Growing Number of Cohabiting Couples LEAVES MORE FAMILIES OPEN TO RISK – Family solicitor Peter Grunberger discusses the financial risks
Cohabiting couples are the fastest-growing family type in the UK, according to newly released figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). The ONS reports that the number of cohabiting couple families continues to grow faster than the number of married couple and lone parent families, with an increase of 25.8 per cent over the decade 2008-2018. It highlights the fact that more and more people are choosing to live together before, or without, getting married. These changing demographics mean that an increasing number of people may be at financial risk in the instance of a cohabitation relationship break-up or the death of a partner. Currently, there is no such thing as a common law marriage in the UK and cohabiting couples are not afforded the same legal rights and protections as married couples. The House of Lords is seeking to address this imbalance with the Cohabitation Rights Bill, which is currently passing through Parliament. The Bill proposes to establish a framework of rights for cohabiting couples following the end of the relationship or the death of one of the cohabitants.
The Bill’s provisions would only apply to cohabiting couples who had either been living together as a couple for a minimum period of three years or had a dependent child. It is intended to provide the right for either cohabitant, when a relationship breaks down, to apply to a court for a financial settlement order to redress a financial benefit or an economic disadvantage resulting from the period of cohabitation. It is also designed to make provision regarding the property of deceased persons who are survived by a cohabitant.
The above article is for general interest only and does not constitute legal advice. For expert advice on cohabitation or any other Family matter contact Peter on 020 8370 2888 or by email at email@example.com
