THE DENTISTRY SHOW DELIVERS FOR THE PROFESSION AS BUSINESS CONFIDENCE SHOWS SIGNS OF RETURNING TO SECTOR

And the largest dental group IDH’s Recruitment Manager Alex Handley added: “We’ve supported this show for the last four years and watched it go from strength to strength. We have seen this event attracts high quality, forwardthinking dental professionals and we need to be here.” Popular additions to the show this year were the new PerioLounge – a Periodontal clinical stream in partnership with The British Society of Periodontology (BSP), a Core CPD stream, a Laboratory & Technician zone together with the bigger ADI Implant theatre and the Professional Hub where many of the leading membership associations recruited new members and promoted their services. Delegates enjoyed the energy and refreshing format of the two-day event which allows easy, free access to worldclass education and the best products and services from the trade. Dental professionals and the dental trade have signalled that confidence is returning to the sector following The Dentistry Show in March which saw its dental professional attendance rise by 20% in unique delegates to over 6,000 total attendance* across the two days (BPA Audited). A record total of 6,150 dental professionals, plus almost 2,500 members of the trade converged on Birmingham’s NEC (despite train services to the NEC suspended for the entire opening day) for a vibrant mix of education and buying across the two day show. “We are delighted with the outcome of this year’s show,” said Event Director, Chris Brown. “It was important that we communicated the benefits of attending the exhibition as we had nearly 350 suppliers on the show floor.” “Looking at the exhibition-only delegate numbers it seems they did come to buy, and as a result we have some very happy exhibitors.” The Dentistry Show’s distinctive blend of world-class free clinical and business education aimed at all members of the dental team was well received by delegates and suppliers alike. Brown reported that the show delivered more than 12,000 free delegate hours of verifiable CPD. Globally respected dental management consultant Gary

Takacs commented: “The show was amazing. The lecture theatres were filled to capacity with speakers covering all aspects of dentistry. As a speaker myself, I often attend the other sessions to learn the latest tips and I had trouble selecting which stream to attend since there were so many excellent speakers! It was also great to see the large exhibit floor bustling with dental professionals eager to learn and buy. There were two other US speakers at the show and we all commented on the energy and excitement – it’s an indication that dentistry is back and the future is bright indeed.” The Dentistry Show featured the largest number of exhibitors ever, with 348 suppliers showcasing products, materials, technologies and services, with most reporting excellent leads and commenting on the quality of delegates. Geoff Stockley, Sales and Marketing Director at exhibitor Plandent summed it up: “This show gets better and better each year. The Dentistry Show attracts a different group of dental professionals and has a better quality of delegate. We get as much business in one day here than in three days at other dentistry shows.” Straumann Marketing Manager Sarah Gardiner agreed: “The Dentistry Show delivers better leads than other shows. Being here is all about generating quality leads, raising brand awareness and meeting new people.”

“The Dentistry Show is very practical and gives me the information I need to improve the experience for my patients, which I can implement straight away. There’s so much to see here, you need to spend two days at this show,” said Andrew Butcher, Dentist. “This show gets important messages out to a large number of people. There are new studies and science coming out all the time and dental professionals can come here to find out how it all applies to general practice,” said Phil Ower, Specialist in Periodontics, Briars Dental Care “This show is always worth attending. It’s a very good opportunity to see the changing aspects of treatments and updates in materials. And it also gives you a chance to try out new products before you buy so you don’t end up investing in something that’s a waste of money,” Duncan Chilcott, Practice Owner “The quality of lectures really differentiates this show from others in the industry. The business seminars at this event are extremely helpful to running a private practice,” Tom Nolan, Dental Surgeon The Dentistry Show returns to the NEC Birmingham on Feb 28-March 1st, 2014 and will be co-located with the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS). *Day one plus Day two delegate attendance (excluding exhibitors). Total attendance including exhibitors is 8,650.

This show is always worth attending. You see all the people you need to in one place rather than arranging for reps to come and see you in the practice. It’s a very good opportunity to see the changing aspects of treatments and updates in materials. And it also gives you a chance to try out new products before you buy so you don’t end up investing in something that’s a waste of money. Duncan Chilcott, Practice Owner The event was as excellent as ever with highly respected speakers and the latest technologies on show in the exhibition. You can get a bit introvert stuck in the four walls of a practice, so it’s great to get out to the show and learn what’s going on in the industry. Jane Fenwick, Dentist Finding out about new products can be really timeconsuming when you’re busy at work, but this is the perfect opportunity to chat to suppliers and get all the information you need. By dedicating a day to the show, I can catch up with latest developments and get some valuable CPD at the same time. Moniba Daniel, Dentist Being here gives me the chance to earn lots of free CPD, but also to get to know about the latest products. And if I miss a seminar, I can always catch up online afterwards. It’s great. Wendy Hall, Dental Nurse The show is an ideal opportunity to speak to exhibitors, get a good look at new products and handle them before you buy, which you obviously can’t do with magazines or on the internet. Lesley Breeze, Dental Therapist We come to this show every year; we wouldn’t get the opportunity to find out about all the new products any other way. It’s a useful way of keeping up your CPD points too. Amanda Kelsey, Dental Technician More testimonials available online at www.thedentistryshow.co.uk/testimonials

THE DENTISTRY SHOW ANNOUNCES HOST OF THE DENTAL BUSINESS PROGRAMME 2014 Following the success of the Dental Business conference in 2013, the team behind The Dentistry Show are delighted to announce that Centre for Dentistry Chief Executive - Lisa Riley will be hosting the programme in 2014. Lisa has spent her working career in the retail industry. Having gained an MBA, she rose quickly to become the Marketing Director of BHS at the age of 31 and subsequently went on to become the Managing Director at Somerfield 24-7 and Chief Executive of Women.com. She also co-founded Centre for Dentistry with Sainsbury’s in 2010, and is keen to utilise her experiences to help create an exciting and highly educational business programme. “Having attended The Dentistry Show a couple of times in the past, I thought it was an excellent event,” Lisa says. “It has clearly gained momentum in recent years and the 2013 Show saw record numbers of both delegates and exhibitors. “As my background isn’t specific to dentistry, I hope to bring something fresh and a bit different to the 2014 business conference. I aim to help present a highly professional programme, concentrating on current topics that are of real business value. “I would also like to bring the focus back to the people involved and look at what makes for success. In the current difficult economic climate, it is easy for business owners to become consumed by short-term facts and figures, measuring their success by their productivity and

profitability whilst unaware of slow decline. I think it is important to ensure the right team is capable of delivering excellence using sound business principles to create solid and sustainable enterprises over the long-term. “Throughout the Dental Business conference 2014, I aim to present genuine high calibre speakers who can use their own personal experiences and skills to offer delegates new perspectives - professionals both from within the dental profession and outside, all with firsthand accounts of what really works and what doesn’t when running a modern enterprise.” The next event will be held on 28th February and 1st March 2014 at the Birmingham NEC, and will be run alongside the Dental Technology Showcase. Separate conference streams will cater to each area of the profession, offering a wealth of information, updates and inspiration for every member of the dental team. Handson workshops, live demonstrations and mini theatres dedicated to specialist fields will also feature, as well as an extensive trade floor expected to exhibit more than 350 leading manufacturers and suppliers. Providing a highly accessible and effective way for dental professionals to keep totally up-to-date with the industry, The Dentistry Show 2014 is one event not to be missed.

The Dentistry Show is delighted to announce Dr Chris Orr as the Clinical Chair of the Aesthetic Dentist Conference 2014. Dr Orr, a founding member of the BACD, is the Course Director for Advanced Dental Seminars’ year course in Cosmetic Dentistry and Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry. Dr Orr has lectured at numerous conferences both in the DR CHRIS ORR UK and abroad, and has developed extensive knowledge in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Chris Brown, Event Director of The Dentistry Show, is thrilled to be working with Dr Orr – “Chris is a prominent figure in the world of cosmetics and I know his experience and expertise will greatly enrich the Aesthetic Dentist Conference in 2014. I think delegates will gain much from him and the faculty of speakers that we are looking to present.” Chris Orr is also pleased to be offering his contribution. “I’m delighted to be able to accept this position. The organisers have a very positive approach to conference programming, and I am looking forward to working with them to bring the best possible selection of speakers to The Dentistry Show 2014. I aim to deliver a ‘must-attend’ aesthetic programme”.

BRINGING THE PROFESSION TOGETHER

The Dentistry Show will co-locate with the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) from 2014, bringing an additional array of benefits for both the dental and laboratory profession. “Next year, I would like to bring the focus on the dental team as a whole. Whether we are dentists or technicians, we are using our various clinical and technical skills to work together and provide the best possible service and care to the patients. It is a highly symbiotic relationship that we have - the technician needs the dentist to be able to progress the clinical work with the patient and the dentist needs the technician to advise, design and then manufacture the appliance that is going to be fitted. I want to encourage an effective relationship that gives way to high quality results.” H DAVID SMIT

We are delighted to announce that David Smith, a member of the GDC and owner of Phoenix Dental Castings, has been confirmed as Conference Chairman of the education programme at DTS 2014. David says, “I have attended both The Dentistry Show and the DTS many times in the past, and I think each has improved year-on-year. Both shows now offer a much greater range of educational opportunities, and they cover topics and trends of a real interest to professionals in all areas of dentistry. These types of events are also a great way for professionals at all stages of their careers to really get involved with the modern industry and update their knowledge and skills. “Looking ahead to my role as Chair of the education programme at DTS next year, I am thrilled to have such an opportunity. It may be a challenge to help organise and present such a large-scale event, but it is exciting to be in a position where you can use your skills and those of people around you to help others learn.”

David believes the collaboration between The Dentistry Show and the DTS in 2014 will serve to further enhance the relationships between technicians and dentists. “I think it is important that technicians have the confidence to get more involved with the design aspect of treatment plans and so have greater effect on the outcomes. With new technology, complex outcomes that once may have taken months, if not years to come to their fruition, could now require only weeks, benefiting all parties involved. With the two events and all members of the team learning in the same place, I think we have the chance to enhance our relationships and understand each other’s contributions and difficulties. As a member of the GDC, David is also keen to point out that his aims for the DTS are in line with proposed changes to the Standards for all dental professionals from September 2013. “The Standards for dental professionals haven’t changed since they were introduced in 2005 – when only dentists were really governed by the GDC. With DCP’s now registered and working to an increasing scope of practice, we feel it is time to update these standards in line with the modern dental profession. We want to bring a focus on the team as a whole in the new Standards,

recognising the wider responsibilities of all registrants and encouraging them to engage more with other members of their teams, as well as with patients. “The second major focus of the new Standards will be on the patients themselves. As dental professionals, no matter what area we specialise in, we are of course here to provide quality care to the public. The new Standards will be far more patient-centred, covering areas such as communication, written treatment plans and more clarity on informed consent. We want to concentrate on helping patients make the best decisions for them.” The set Standards for dental professionals will not be the only area to see changes in the near future, with the CPD system also set to be adjusted. Next year the CPD requirements may change slightly, and professionals may not be able to leave all their hours to the last minute!” In 2013, The Dentistry Show alone provided more than 65 hours of vCPD for all dental professionals, and next year will be no different. The two events will offer CPD for every member of the dental team in 2014, so there really will be something for everyone. In addition, an extensive trade floor will host more than 350 of the leading dental suppliers and manufacturers, providing delegates access to the very latest products and technologies in the industry. For now, David would like to extend an invitation: “To everyone in the profession, I hope you can come to this remarkable event and take advantage of the free array of lectures, seminars and workshops that are on offer. You really can develop and update your skills as well as participate in events, while you build relationships for the future. Put the date in your diary!”

COMMUNICATION TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS

The Dentistry Show’s Aesthetic Technician conference was the place to be on Saturday 2nd March, with a whole host of exciting names lined up to present to a passionate and enthusiastic crowd. At 12 noon it was the turn of Stephen Lander, Michael Cahill and Gayna Horridge to take to the stage, with their talk on achieving excellence through communication from the patient right through to the technician.

NDER STEPHEN LA

CAHILL DR MICHAEL

To open the presentation, Gayna Horridge introduced the concept of communication, and its importance in achieving the very best outcomes for patients. Without good communication, said Gayna, patient expectations cannot be fully met, and very often the technician won’t receive all the information they need to produce work of the highest standard. As part of her introduction, Gayna investigated the difference between ‘hearing’ and ‘listening’ and discussed ways in which members of the dental team can hope to glean the small details that can often get overlooked when planning a treatment. Gayna then handed over to Dr Michael Cahill for a dentist’s perspective. Building on the details Gayna described, Michael expanded upon the need for good

RRIDGE GAYNA HO

communication, and detailed some of the different methods a dentist can hope to build up a good relationship with his or her technician. According to Michael, very often results can be compromised by poorly written descriptions that lack detail and use vague language such as ‘some’ ‘a little’ and ‘ish’. To overcome some of the many potential issues, Michael discussed a number of strategies dentists can adopt to ensure best communication with the technician, and also summarised the types of photographs needed and the best way to transfer these to the technician. At this point, Stephen Lander took to the stage. He discussed the construction of wax-ups for anterior cases and stressed the importance of care and attention while working in open-dialogue with the dentist to achieve the

best results. Together, Michael and Stephen then described a number of case studies where good communication really made a difference to the case. These cases even included a VIP patient – Michael’s wife Fiona! To conclude proceedings, Gayna summarised the key points of the discussion, while also stressing the need to collect testimonials – both for the practice, and the technician. These form an important part of the patient journey and also go to show the quality of work you can provide. With good communication, Gayna concluded, the team can achieve predictable outcomes, with less stress for all team members involved and ultimately improve patient satisfaction. The whole team will only benefit as a result!

BIG HEART PARTY: HEART YOUR SMILE CELEBRATES IN STYLE. Heart your Smile is a charitable organisation dedicated to changing the public’s perception of dentistry, increase attendance and reinstate the dental team’s position as trusted members of the local community. Through our involvement in fundraising and industry events, we’ve succeeded in promoting and facilitating our nine point manifesto, which encourages confidence, mentoring, inspiration and innovation. Heart your Smile (HYS) has 4 key goals. These are to: 1. Change the public’s perception of Dentistry 2. Increase attendance and uptake of care 3. Emphasise the dental team’s position as trusted members of the local community 4. Restore positive morale in the profession Our most recent event was our brilliant Big Heart Party, held on the first evening of the 2013 Dentistry Show in Birmingham, hosted by television’s Kirsten O’Brien and featuring our wonderful trustees, Seema Sharma, James Goolnik, Simon Gambold and Roger Matthews. Needless to say, it was an outstanding evening, the success of which was evident in its reception; with many guests taking to their social media pages during and after the event to express their enjoyment, post images of themselves in the pop-up photo booth we had constructed for the night, and congratulating the attendees awarded the title of Champion or Ambassador for the charity. The Champion and Ambassador awards were presented to followers who have provided exceptional support within the charity in all areas ranging from baking charity

cupcakes to designing the website, entirely out of the goodness of their hearts and their belief in the Heart your Smile message. In the end, 380 people in total attended, adorned in the requested splash of red, and the enthusiastic crowd was comprised of dental marketing companies, dental associations, cosmetic dental companies, individual hygienists, private practices, NHS workers and many more. The result was a whopping £10,000 raised through ticket sales, raffles and donations. Whilst the fun that was had certainly gave a little extra glow and sparkle to the evenings events, it’s this figure that is really important, as with the money raised, Heart your Smile are now able to further invest in three key areas of interest. The money will go towards providing oral health community outreach, developing mentoring through our Magic of Mentoring programme and fundraising initiatives in and around the community through our Innovation in Practice promotion. All of these endeavours and many more, a presentation on our business plan and 2013/14 objectives and metrics were discussed at the Heart your Smile AGM at the BDA conference on Saturday 27th April at 10am. It is important to us that alongside promoting our manifesto to others, we behave according to it ourselves, and we hope that the charity’s success in these areas will be worthy of many of the nine habits. It’s important that alongside congratulating those who received awards, we profess our deepest thanks to those who sponsored the event, without whom the evening wouldn’t have been such a resounding success. Our appreciation goes out to CloserStill Media for hosting the event at The Dentistry Show. Then Smile-On Healthcare Learning, De Lage Landen, 3M Espe, Colgate and Novum, who wonderfully sponsored the event, and to the

following companies who generously sponsored tables: Kerr, Dentsply, NSK, BSDHT, Software of Excellence, Dentistry Show, Business of Dentistry, Optident, Denplan, ApexHub, Coltene Whaledent, Henry Schein, Gum Saver and Dentabyte. We hope you had a wonderful evening. If you feel you’ve missed out, you’d like to get involved, or you simply want to know more, please don’t hesitate to contact us via our website, Facebook, Twitter or go to our YouTube channel for even more information. If you would like to see pictures from the event, which range from stylish to very silly, just ‘like’ our Facebook page and go to our Big Heart Party photo album.

BESPOKE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR DENTISTS AT THE DENTISTRY SHOW 2013 With quality education remaining a high priority for all dental professionals in such a fast-pace industry, The Dentistry Show 2013 was another huge success. Up to 65 hours of verifiable CPD was on offer through two days of truly inspirational lectures, hands-on workshops and live theatre presentations, catering to the demands of all areas of the profession. Working with ITN Productions, the show even created a news programme tailored specifically to the dental profession, which can still be viewed on the ITN Healthcare website. The Aesthetic Dentist conference stream was a particular highlight of the event, with thousands of practitioners attending lectures by some of the highest renowned and respected individuals in the profession. The star-studded line-up included the likes of internationally recognised speakers Maurice Salama, Paulo Malo, Ron Jackson, Louis Mackenzie and Stefan Paul to name but a few. The extensive programme was very well received by delegates, who were keen to interact and were highly responsive to each speaker. Amongst the particularly popular lectures was Maurice Salama’s talk on implant dentistry, which explored techniques to ensure no mistakes are made when placing implants. Demonstrating his extensive knowledge of the subject, Maurice also emphasised how far technology has advanced and showed how much this can raise the standard of dental work produced through some very interesting case studies. Later in the day, Gary Unterbrink delivered his presentation on occlusion and evidence-based dentistry, to a similarly attentive audience. He looked at the ethical treatment options available for patients with suspected bruxism, showing case studies and surveys to back up his points. Gary went on to discuss the benefits and implications of various occlusal therapies including deprogrammers, and encouraged practitioners to ask patients more questions in order to look at the ‘bigger picture’. On the Saturday, Paulo Malo took to the stage to discuss ‘Total Rehabilitation with the All-on-4 Concept’, with another impressive crowd of delegates. He looked at the development of the All-on-4 Concept and the many benefits it can offer a wide range of patients, by eliminating the need for bone grafts. Paulo also emphasised that while the technique has a high success rate (98%!), it very

much depends on the knowledge and skill of the surgeon, so practitioners should ensure they have undergone adequate training before attempting such treatment, or they should look at referring the patient to a specialist. As well as the main conference stream, The Dentistry Show also presented several mini theatres offering more specialised seminars for practitioners. Brand new to 2013 was the hugely popular PerioLounge, where leading specialists such as Amit Patel, Matt Perkins and Hani Mostafa delivered quality presentations to a consistently large crowd of delegates, discussing a range of case studies and offering a wealth of practical tips and guidance on case selection and management of periodontal patients. The ADI Theatre and Live Theatre also offered extensive information on new implant systems and technology, greatly enriching the educational opportunities available. An array of more intimate and hands-on workshops were also available throughout the event, with real-time whitening sessions led by Dr Zaki Kanaan and introductions to diode lasers with Marty Jablow. Short-term-ortho workshops also included training sessions for the Inman Aligner with Andy Wallace, cosmetic-based orthodontics with Anoop Maini, and introductions to Fastbraces with Anthony Viazis. In addition, the tooth whitening debate attracted many delegates, who discussed what they should do as a group to help stop illegal companies offering such a dangerous service to the public. As well as all this, the Aspire Academy (with Healthcare Learning: Smile-on) and CORE CPD conference (with VAKmentor) were massive hits with delegates. Newly qualified dentists were introduced to the real world of modern dental professionals during the Friday Academy, while delegates at all points in their careers piled into the CORE CPD conference on Saturday to focus on the main CPD topics and top up their required hours. In the centre of the conference hall was the extensive trade exhibition, with leading suppliers and manufacturers demonstrating the very latest equipment and technology to reach the UK dental market. Amongst the busy stands

on the exhibition floor was the new Professional Hub, which hosted some of the high profile dental organisations and institutes who offered their support to delegates. These included the BACD, DTA, BSP, BADN, BSDHT, ITI, FGDP as well as many more. With such a busy couple of days for everyone at the show, Heart your Smile’s Big Heart Party on Friday night provided a great opportunity for professionals to relax and meet both old friends and new. Hundreds turned up to relax and enjoy an evening of delicious cuisine, great entertainment and charity raffles, raising donations for a great cause. As Saturday drew to a close, delegates seemed more than happy with their experience of The Dentistry Show. Dental Surgeon Jag Chohan commented, “I really enjoy this show. I like the fact that you have lectures and an exhibition in one place! This is an easy way of earning CPD points and the speakers are excellent and the subject matter is always relevant.” Associate Dentist Argeni Milanov agreed saying, “This is an extremely useful show for collecting information and getting up-to-date with all the latest technology and materials. I’d highly recommend it!”

All offered with a personal, friendly and efficient approach.

Dental Traditional braces move teeth into position in two stages, usually over a period of about two years. In the first year, the crown of the tooth is moved into alignment. In the second year, treatment addresses the position of the root of the tooth. However, the brackets used with Fastbraces® work on a different mechanical principle altogether. The patented system uses an innovative bracket and a specially- shaped wire to move the root of the tooth towards its final position, from the beginning of treatment. Fastbraces® Technology brackets have an elevated slot and a unique elbow design. The shape of the bracket is critical because it literally changes the force-flexibility equation which helps reduce treatment time.

The beautiful Fastbraces® Clear™ ceramic brackets on a model representation.

Fastbraces® Technology also provides an easier lifestyle for patients undergoing treatment. Patients often times experience less discomfort and there are no more risks with Fastbraces® than those associated with traditional braces. When the braces come off patients often only need to wear the retainers for only 15 minutes a day in the shower, cleverly described as Fastbraces® “Tooth Shampoo”. Results will vary from patient to patient. For the consumer looking for an aesthetic cosmetic solution, Fastbraces® Clear™ ceramic brackets are also available and offer the same technology advantages of moving teeth as the Fastbraces® Metal™ brackets. Microminder: Getting IT right!

Among the great products exhibited were:

Don’t be alone! Microminder support over 1800 practices who trust our expertise every day!

• SonicFill, the fast and easy composite bulk fill system for posterior restorations

Plus, we’ve been looking after dentists’ IT needs for nearly 30 years. Those are impressive stats don’t you agree?

• MetaFix all-in-one matrix system for Class II – MO/OD/ MOD composite fillings in the posterior area

So, why is Microminder so successful?

• OptiBond XTR self-etch, two-component dental adhesive, for use in all direct and indirect procedures, and with all cements and substrates. On the Saturday, Kerr was proud to sponsor a presentation by world-renowned lecturer Dr Ron Jackson, who spoke to delegates on the topic posterior composites and demonstrated SonicFill. Ron then joined the Kerr team on the stand to talk to visitors, who queued five-deep waiting for further SonicFill demonstrations. The Dentistry Show proved to be an extremely successful event for Kerr, selling more than 60 kits and performing over 200 demonstrations.
