DÚN LAOGHAIRE HARBOUR TRANSFER TO COUNCIL

€33,000,000.00

THE LIKELY COST TO DÚN LAOGHAIRE RATHDOWN PROPERTY TAX & RATE PAYERS

Dear Minister Ross,

OPEN LETTER TO MINISTER ROSS

Under the Harbour’s Act, the Government will transfer Dún Laoghaire Harbour to the council. I know you know this because you are the sole shareholder in the Harbour Company. When the issue arose last year, a Sinn Féin motion was passed by the council inviting you to a meeting with the full council to discuss this matter. The council sent you the invitation but the meeting didn’t materialise. So now I do so very publicly. The figure above is the amount that the risk assessors estimate the liability attached to harbour to be, when the entity is transferred. If the council were to absorb this risk, it would mean that critical capital projects across the county would be severely jeopardised. Projects like new roads, our new swimming pool in Ballyogan, Fernhill Gardens, Traffic Improvements schemes and playgrounds. One councillor estimated that in order to fund the €33 million bill, Local Property Tax would need to increase by 8% along with business rates by 4%. Minister, I am imploring you as well as Minister Madigan and Senator Richmond to ensure that central government indemnify us against this liability. Given that 20% of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Local Property Tax is taken by central government to be redistributed to other councils, it is vital that every opportunity is taken thereafter to claim back funds from central government. Which is what I’m asking in this case. I am not attacking you. I am however asserting the need for you to fight for us, to have central government foot the bill on this and ensure the needs of the increasing population are met of this matter. Yours sincerely

Cllr Chris Curran
