/ 2011 PREVIEW //

/ STILL YOUNG, BUT NOT INEXPERIENCED // by Mike Fields

The scoreboard told the story at the end of the Knights fourth consecutive loss to Boyle County, Nov. 19, 2010.

Lexington Catholic football feeds off its success, including a pair of state titles in the last six years and its status as a perennial title contender. But this pre-season, Lexington Catholic can use a defeat to whet its appetite. That’s how junior quarterback Kyle Bolin is remembering the Knights’ 45-35 loss to eventual state champion Boyle County in last year’s playoffs. “That game showed the potential we have to be a great team this year,” Bolin said. “We showed a lot of unity and strength in that loss. “We have so many returning starters, it’s exciting to think about how good we can be this season.” Lexington Catholic was exceedingly young last year, a handicap against a brutal schedule that included Class 4A district rival Boyle County (twice), and 6A powerhouses St. Xavier and Trinity. The Knights are still young, but not inexperienced. “The biggest difference is that, coming in this year, they understand how they have to practice,” Coach Bill Letton said. “They figured it out at the end of last season, and they’ve picked up where they left off.” Senior defensive standout Adam

Wachs said “all the young guys have grown up. We’ve really come together. With returning starters about everywhere, we’re pretty confidence and ready to go.” Bolin, who threw for 2,300 yards and 18 touchdowns last year, will trigger the offense. “ H e ’ s improved quite a bit,” Letton said. “His arm strength is better. He’s getting rid of the ball quicker and with more zip on it.” His No. 1 target will be the guy wearing the No. 1 jersey, 6-foot-2 senior Adam Bush, who had 53 catches for 873 yards and 10 TDs last fall. Letton is expecting big things from Bush. “His speed has improved and he’s running past people now.” The Nash triplets -- juniors Alex, Casey and Nick -- will also play receiver, as will sophomore David Bouvier. The Knights have plenty of tight ends -- Calvin Zimmerman, Anthony Kersey, Nathan Burke and Josh Mesmer. Lexington Catholic is deep at running back, led by junior Amoh Kumengisa, who rushed for 600 yards and nine TDs last year. Marcelis Logan (son of former UK star Mark Logan), Kairon Snowden, Malik Guidry and Noah Mitchell -- all sophomores

“What we went through last year with the loss to Boyle County, none of us want to feel that again.” -Adam Bush

7

-- will help carry the load. They’re also capable as slot receivers. The offensive line is led by 6-1, 250-pound senior Kurt Wilhelmus whom Letton calls “without a doubt, the best center I’ve ever had. He’s really special at that position.” Veterans Oscar Melendez, Trey Lankford and Ridge Jackson will beef up the o-line. No matter how strong the Knights’ offense is, the defense may hold the key to the team’s fate. Letton said poor tackling was a major problem last season when Lexington Catholic surrendered 30 points a game. “We’ve made tackling a point of emphasis this year,” Letton said. “The fact that we know how to practice better should help.” Wachs, who led the team in tackles last year at free safety, thinks experience will serve the “D” well this season. “With so many guys back, we should have a real solid defense,” he said. “I can’t wait. I love being put in as a leader along with (linebacker) Jordan (Artrip).” Wilhelmus and Melendez will split time at nose guard. Michael Vogelsang will be at defensive end. Trey Mattingly can go at linebacker or end. Will Childers and Corey Mesmer have experience up front, too. Casey LeBrun and Josh Mesmer will be at linebacker. In the secondary, Mike Lynch returns along with Casey and Nick Nash. Zimmerman and Kersey will share the hybrid spot. The Knights don’t play either Trinity or St. X, but Letton thinks the schedule may be tougher top to bottom. Bush doesn’t care who the opponents are. “We don’t like to use a hard schedule as an excuse for losing,” he said. “Last year we had all the potential in the world but didn’t play up to it. “What we went through last year with the loss to Boyle County, none of us want to feel that again.” (Originally published August 15, 2011, Lexington Herald-Leader Reprinted with permisssion.) 2011 OFFICIAL MEDIA GUIDE

One day they’ll retire his jersey, but today he can’t even get one with a number on it. So what drives a stumbling, bumbling kid who doesn’t seem to have a coordinated bone in his body, to come to practice and endure the pain, the heartache and the coach in his face, day after day, year after year? It’s the same thing that drives fans to fill stadium seats even in a losing season. It’s the hope that we will get to be a part of something greater than ourselves. A team. A legend. A legacy.

Defensive Line Coach Mississauga, Ontario is roughly a ten hour drive from Lexington Catholic, but that’s where our Defensive Line Coach began his journey to us. Ron Kelly was born and raised in Mississauga, a suburb of Toronto, and played high school football there. He caught the eye of the Western Kentucky University football coaches, and was recruited to play for the Hilltoppers. He helped WKU to a 10-2 season in 1997, and the team advanced to the second round of the playoffs. He was also named captain that season, as well as defensive MVP. After his senior season at Western, he returned home by way of the Canadian Football League;

15

in 1998, he was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger Cats. After playing in the CFL, Coach Kelly began his teaching and coaching careers at Applewood Heights Secondary School in Mississauga. He worked up the coaching ranks there to Head Coach, before leaving to become Defensive Co-Coordinator for the Etobicoke Eagles of the Ontario Varsity Football League. Coach Kelly earned his BS in Physical Education, with a minor in Geography, from WKU, and teaches both at Lexington Catholic. Offensive Line Coach Kevin Bailey returns as a coach to the same field he excelled on as a high school football player, coaching the same position he earned multiple honors for as a member of the Knights under Bob Sphire. This season, his fourth at LC, he will be taking over the coaching duties of the Offensive Linemen. In high school, Kevin was a three year starter on the O-Line, was named 1st Team All State (AP & CJ) and Herald Leader All-City as a senior, twice All-District, and helped LC to a perfect 10-0 season and No.1 State ranking in 1998. He also played baseball, and was a two year starter at first base and designated hitter. Coach Bailey went on to play

The coaches of the ACC awarded him The Piccolo Award that season as a tribute to his determination and toughness. They are expecting their first child in February.

Running Backs SUPER. BOWL. CHAMPION. Those three words bring instant credibility in the world of American football, and the list of men who can lay claim to that title is short. But new Lexington Catholic Running Backs Coach Marc Logan is among those few. Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Marc has been called a “true talent in the offensive backfield”. He played high school football at Bryan Station, then went on to play for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. After his senior season, Marc was selected in the fifth round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, with whom he played in Super Bowl XXIII. He went on to play for ten years in

17

the NFL, with the Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, and the 49er’s when they won Super Bowl XXIX. The Forty Niners beat the San Diego Chargers in that game, 49-26. That San Francisco team featured Jerry Rice, Steve Young, and recent Hall of Fame inductee, Deion Sanders, as well as our new coach. He retired from playing professional football after his 1997 season with the Redskins, and took his football expertise to the sidelines. Marc Logan is one of two new coaches on the Lexington Catholic staff for the 2011 campaign. / JaQUAR SANDERS // Receivers Jaquar Sanders is beginning his seventh season as a member of the Lexington Catholic coaching staff. Coach Jaq, as he is affectionately known by his players, will be coaching the Knights receivers, as well as serving as offensive coordinator with the Junior Varsity team. JaQuar Sanders is originally from Louisville, where he attended Doss High School, graduating in 1998. As a talented athlete, he earned three varsity letters each in track and football, and garnered the attention of his hometown college. After graduation, he played football at the University of Louisville, earning three varsity letters at the

wide receiver position. He then went on to play professionally for five seasons with the Lexington Horsemen of the United Indoor Football League. Sanders graduated from the University of Louisville with his Bachelors Degree in Communications, and also a minor in Sociology. Coach Jaq also spent time pursuing a Masters Degree in Film at Georgia State University, and now oversees his own production company, Fyre Entertainment. Coach Jaq and his soon to be wife have a beautiful daughter, Kadynce, who is a year old.

Assistant Coach

Jodi DiRaimo has been involved with the Lexington Catholic football program since 2000, when his recently graduated son Bobby attended Sts. Peter and Paul, and played in the Lexington Catholic Flag Football Program. Now in his eleventh season, Coach DiRaimo is still going strong, and on the sidelines for every Knights football game. He was born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, and played football in his younger days during the “leather helmet” era. He was an All-State football player in high school, then went on to play for the University of Rhode Island in college, and professionally with the Providence Steamrollers.

21

Coach DiRaimo is also a retired professional chef, having been owner and operator of Bravo Pitino’s, Giuseppe’s and Jodi DiRaimo’s Italian Cuisine. His passion for food still drives him to prepare meals for the Lexington Catholic football program, including several meals for the full team during the year, and preparing dinner for several hundred people at the annual LC Football Golf Scramble held at the beginning of the football season. He is currently employed by Bluegrass Oxygen, and his wife, Karen, works for Farmers Bank & Capital Trust in Frankfort.

/ WILL LETTON // Assistant Coach Beginning his second season as an assistant coach at Lexington Catholic, Will Letton also continues to pursue a degree at the University of Kentucky. A 2009 graduate of Lexington Catholic, Will was previously a player under his father, Coach Bill Letton. Will played a season of South Eastern Conference football under Coach Rich Brooks at the University of Kentucky. He then decided to follow in his father’s footsteps that walk along the sideline instead of between them; the younger Coach Letton will be helping coach the Catholic High School teams, and will spend time coaching the Middle School teams as well. During his time spent between

the sidelines for the Knights, he earned 2nd Team All-State Honors (CJ), All-State Honorable Mention (AP), and 1st Team All-City. He also played in the Kentucky vs. Tennessee All-Star Game, and the Kentucky East/West All Star game, as well as being a member of the 2007 KHSAA Class AAAA State Championship Team. Will also received scholarship offers from Miami of Ohio and the United States Air Force Academy. He decided to give SEC football a shot, and chose the University of Kentucky to pursue an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering.

Assistant Coach

The 2011 Lexington Catholic football season will be Juan Maldonado’s fourth on the sidelines, but his first coaching at the Varsity level. Since 2008, Coach Maldonado has been helping mold the future offensive and defensive linemen on the LC Middle School level. While he is moving up to where the older boys play, he will still be helping coach the younger players as well. Juan Maldonado is a proud alumni of Lexington Catholic, Class of 2006. He has fifteen years of football playing experience, including all four years of his time as a student here. He played on both sides of the ball at the varsity level for three years, as a guard on offense and an end on defense,

23

and was a starter for the first State Championship Knights team. After graduating from Catholic, he went on to further his education at Eastern Kentucky University, where he was also a walk-on fullback and long snapper for that storied football program. Coach Maldonado is currently single, dedicating most of his free time to coaching, and also works for the agriculture department of Shadwell Farm.

/ GEORGE EWEN // Assistant Coach, Videographer “If George Ewen ever leaves this program, go ahead and shut the doors. We’ll all be gone shortly after him. This program would not run without him…George is my right hand.” That’s not a direct quote, but that is very much the feeling that Coach Letton relayed to everyone that attended the annual kickoff picnic. The title above lists him as “Assistant Coach”, but that doesn’t begin to encompass the things that Mr. Ewen does for this football program. If you pull into the lot behind the school and don’t see his Jeep parked somewhere, wait a minute; he just ran for a part to something. Coach Ewen is originally from

Hazard, but migrated north to Lexington in time to play high school football for the legendary Roy Walton at Lafayette High School. He went on to attend UK, before becoming a high school and college football referee. Before he was on the sidelines as a coach at Lexington Catholic, he was working between them wearing the black and white striped uniform that we love so much. George, as everyone as Catholic knows him, is entering his twelfth season with the Knights. On top of his football and video duties, he also is called upon occasionally as a substitute teacher at LC, and also performs maintenance work around the school.

/ ANDREA EWEN // Videographer Andrea Ewen works with the Lexington Catholic Football Program as videographer, helping her father, George, capture every minute of football action on video. On top of her duties with the football team every Friday night, she is also Administrative Assistant to Fayette County Property Valuation Administrator David O’Neill. Along with working in the PVA office, Andrea is Vice President of the Fayette County Young Democrats, Regional Director for the Kentucky Young Democrats, and coordinator for the Young Adults group at Pax Christi Catholic Church. She is a native of Lexington, and attended Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary, before graduating from

25

Lafayette High School. From there, she attended the University of Kentucky, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration upon graduation. Andrea is a proud member of the Lexington Catholic Football Program, and this is her twelfth season working with the team.

/ JUSTIN SEALAND // Assistant Coach Justin Sealand is one of the two new coaches on the Lexington Catholic staff this season (Marc Logan being the other). He will mainly be helping coach the receivers, but will also help out several other offensive positions. Coach Sealand has previously coached high school in Mississippi and Tennessee, before finding his way to Lexington. He attended Berkmar High School in Lilburn, Georgia, population 12,000 (in 2010 census) where he played football, basketball, and participated in track. After high school, Coach Sealand attended Rhodes College in Memphis, where he played football

and lettered all four years playing three different positions, as well as being named Team Captain. He also earned Academic All-Conference recognition three of those years, and received his Bachelors in Psychology from Rhodes. Justin went on to study at the University of Mississippi after graduation, where he earned a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. He will be putting those degrees to good use at Lexington Catholic, teaching Honors Algebra II on top of his coaching duties. Justin’s wife, Kristen, is a Lexington Catholic Alum, and teaches at Mary Queen.

/ PATRICK SCHWENDEMAN // Assistant Coach Coach Patrick Schwendeman graduated from Lexington Catholic in 2006, and decided to immediately return to his alma mater as an assistant coach. This will be his fourth season on the sidelines of LC, where he is the tight ends coach and helps with the Freshman team. As a player with the Knights, Patrick was a member of the 2005 KHSAA State Championship team, and was selected as Most Valuable Player of the Championship game. Catholic defeated Bowling Green, 49-21 to win the Class AAA Championship under Bob Sphire, the first state title in the history of the program. Patrick played safety and tight end for Coach Sphire, and set single season and career

27

records for interceptions. Of his ten interceptions, he returned three for touchdowns, and 238 total return yards for an average of almost 24 yards per interception. Coach Schwendeman recently graduated from the University of Kentucky, and is continuing his education in pursuit of a Masters in Education at Georgetown College.

/ HEATHER MATTOCKS-GREENE // Athletic Trainer, Certified Sprains. Bruises. Torn ligaments. Cuts. Broken bones. Dislocated joints. Concussions. Possibly no one on the Lexington Catholic football staff has a harder job than Heather Mattocks-Greene. Not only dealing with all the injuries and daily status of 90 players, but also knowing that when a player shows up at her door, it’s usually not just to say “Hello.” She is the authority on each player’s health, and whether or not he can play or is relegated to the sidelines. And she has the unenviable job of delivering that bad news to our boys and their families. But she also has the task of rehabbing them back to 100% healthy, and seeing them succeed

in their chosen sport. Heather is beginning her third season with the LC football team. She is an Athletic Trainer,Certified (ATC), receiving her certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association. She has been an athletic trainer with the Lexington Clinic for thirteen years, and also worked at the Supervisor Team Member Evaluation Center at Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Georgetown, where she is the Sports Medicine Supervisor. Mrs. Mattocks-Greene is a Lexington native, and graduate of the University of Kentucky. She has been married to Guy Greene for 7 years, and has two step-children; Zack, 16, and Lauren, 10.

/ Dr. DAVID DOME // Team Doctor You may not recognize him walking the sidelines at a Lexington Catholic football game, but Dr. David Dome is an important part of keeping, and returning our boys to fully healthy and playing the sport they love. If a parent has to see him, they know it’s probably due to a serious injury. But they also know that their son is in excellent hands, and will be fully healthy once Dr. Dome is finished with him. Dr. Dome is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery, and provides services in general orthopedics and sports medicine, among others. His professional interests include sports medicine and arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle. He began his affiliation with the

31

Lexington Clinic in 2000, following a fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Lipscomb Clinic in Nashville. His ties to Central Kentucky are strong, having received his MD at the University of Kentucky and doing his undergrad work at Centre College in Danville. Along with taking care of our Knights, Dr. Dome is also been the team physician for the Lexington Legends, and outside of his practice, he lectures on shoulder injuries and is active in research efforts to improve treatment of the shoulder. He also is a reviewer for the Journal of Athletic Training, and a member of American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. 2011 OFFICIAL MEDIA GUIDE
