Blohm+Voss Collaborates with Zaha Hadid Architects on Line of Unique Circle Yachts Technical innovations have placed Blohm+Voss at the forefront

of the yacht market. In more recent years, the brand has been behind some of the most prestigious and innovative vessels, and in 2013, collaborated with Zaha Hadid Architects on the Unique Circle Yachts by Zaha Hadid Architects for Blohm+Voss, which incorporates ZHA’s 128m master prototype introduced at their London exhibit and Blohm+Voss’ practical aspects. Their collaboration encompasses five individual 90m yachts that creatively explore the design philosophies of the master prototype within the technical requirements of a fully engineered yacht design. The overall design is informed by fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research shaping the design of the hull. The exoskeleton structure of the upper section is an interwoven network of supports that vary in thickness and lend a natural aesthetic to the yacht’s external appearance, evoking the organic structural systems of natural marine formations and connecting the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals. Whereas traditional yacht designs adhere to a strict horizontal order, this exoskeleton creates an intense connectivity between the various decks and elements of the design. The fluid design language of the master prototype has been applied to the five subsequent 90m variations of the Unique Circle Yachts, creating a design with the highest correlation between the various options. Dr. Herbert Aly, CEO and Managing Partner of Blohm+Voss says: “On an aesthetic level, a superyacht is a great design task as everything 6 |

is customized down to the last detail. A superyacht is by definition an exercise in total design, where every detail is looked at with attention and refinement. In the past, in the era of steam liners, there has been an attempt of utilizing ship building elements in architecture. Zaha Hadid and her team have taken this ethos and created a bold new vision and a new benchmark in the design of superyachts.” Zaha Hadid Architects and Blohm+Voss have transformed yacht design; creating an innovative concept and developing this vision into a fully seaworthy prototype that offers dynamic new possibilities for naval architecture. ■

78-Meter SuperYacht N

ew York based Yacht/ Architecture/ Design Studio Impossible Productions Ink LLC have just revealed this truly unique 78 Meter SuperYacht for the one percent; set apart from other vessels through her truly contemporary exterior styling, yet still retaining a clear classical elegance. Her lines are not only unlike any others on the market, but she also has two key features not found on others of her type: five pools, and a generous helicopter storage. These amenities more and more in demand by the superrich cater to the need for increasingly open entertainment spaces and easy access. This luxury, custom-designed yacht has been created by the same design studio as the revolutionary Exposé project (with ICON Yachts).

8 |

Measuring 78 meters in length and with a beam of 13.2 meters, this luxury custom designed yacht also offers a large tender garage, more than spacious enough for any clients’ wishes, a main pool, which merges seamlessly into an infinity jacuzzi on the Main Aft Deck, and three other smaller pools located on the Aft Decks. All pools above the Main Deck feature lenticular glass bottoms, allowing for sectional rays of light to travel through the outdoor deck spaces. As a result, the Aft Decks will be incredibly light, atmospheric and lively entertainment spaces on this vessel. The ability to condition these environments through the treatment of these lenticular pools allows for a multitude of different atmospherics, depending on the clients’ wishes, from the fully private to open and party-like over all decks simultaneously.

Currently the layout offers a large Owner Suite adjacent to a private Sun Deck, along with three VIP Suites and two Guest Suites with large outdoor deck/ lounge/ pool spaces, looked after by 19 members of crew. To entertain guests this SuperYacht offers: Formal Dining Hall, Al Fresco Dining & Lounge, Indoor Lounge/ Cinema, Chefs Table & Show Kitchen and a Beach Club, Gym & Sauna. This current layout is designed to show the opportunities of this vessel, but is completely flexible, and due to sufficient volume can accommodate clients’ requirements in terms of number of guests and crew. The design studio is anticipating a full redesign of the interior spaces to create a custom one-off vessel for the client, tailored specifically to their needs and demands, to further make it truly stand out from anything currently on the market. IMPOSSIBLE PRODUCTIONS INK LLC is a New York-based design studio, lead by Alistair Gill and Veronika Schmid. Both directors are

trained architects and have worked in world-renowned yacht design and architecture offices for 15+ years before relocating and establishing IMPOSSIBLE PRODUCTIONS INK LLC in New York in 2009. Alongside their professional experience, they have both been teaching advanced architectural design at the world’s most prestigious architecture schools for the past 15 years. IMPOSSIBLE PRODUCTIONS INK is a multidisciplinary practice specializing in yacht design (exterior & interior), architecture and product design. The design studio is known for its innovative, intelligent and contemporary approach to thinking about space and challenging our perceptions of what space and design can be. Relaxation Design Methods

luxury bathroom space allows this area to become more useful as an in-home retreat, offering relaxation and soothing comfort for the mind and body. Embrace the opportunity to titillate your senses with bathroom scents, lighting, and calming colors. Accentuate with Sleek Accessories The latest trends range from personalized areas with walk-in showers, superb lighting, and greenery to Jacuzzis and deep claw-foot tubs. The list amenities can expand, of course. Consider flat screen televisions, heated flooring, and towel racks – it’s only limited to what delights you. Rejuvenating Sunlight and Scented Smell-Wells A skylight allows you to enjoy the stream of sunlight during daytime baths, and allows you to bathe under the stars at night. If you have one, take advantage of it frequently. For nighttime soaks, scented candles work nicely. Some people relax so deeply that they fall asleep – you know you’re on the right path when this happens. If fire safety is a concern, battery-operated candles also work well. They aren’t scented, but they help to create a peaceful ambiance. Essential Salts and Bath Oils Lavender bath salts provide a calming effect. They give off a relaxing aroma and contain healing properties to help calm anxious thoughts while soothing tired muscles. 10 |

Get Lost in Relaxing Sound Music adds another level to your relaxation. Soft jazz or meditative rhythms are good options. Either way, let the music soothe while the water regenerates. Silence the Cell Phone Place your cell phone on vibrate if you take it into your space. A jarring ringtone will interrupt your calming experience. While this may take time to master, it affords the opportunity to shut down from the outside world, at least temporarily. You deserve a respite, and voice mail is there to stand in the gap. Create a Reading Space A reading room compliments the intended vibe following a relaxing and refreshing bath. A great way to display books and encourage children to appreciate the art of quiet time is to offer a comfortable reading space with unique shelving creations. Consider remodeling a room in your home dedicated specifically to books. This is a fun project that, once completed, offers pleasure by providing hours of enjoyment in a relaxing space for your family. ■

Car of 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith

is no stranger to luxurious, innovative designs. Rather than stay complacent, however, the brand produced a gamechanging vehicle with the Wraith. Clientele Luxury Managing Director Erin Green gave the vehicle a test drive at the media event at the Cannon Suites Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the top luxury media outlets were present. With its detailed, high-powered design, customization, and boundary-pushing features, the Wraith clearly is the Top Luxury Car for 2014 – and the year hasn’t even started yet. Rolls-Royce calls the Wraith the most potent, technologicallyadvanced car – and one for the curious, confident, and bold. While based on the Ghost, the Wraith clearly goes above and beyond, adding far more features and engineering to what has been the best for the brand. Rolls-Royce announced this top-notch car on January 18, 2013, but its official debut doesn’t actually come until early 2014. Celebrities are already clamoring after it, most notably with boxer Floyd Mayweather, 12 |

Jr. purchasing the Wraith in advance. The Lancia Aurelia Coupe and the Maserati Ghibli supposedly inspired the Wraith. But if you’re familiar with the brand’s history, the name first emerged with a 1938 to 1939 model. At the time, RollsRoyce had the only running chassis. Beyond the name and rearhinged doors, however, the similarities end. Serbian designer Pavle Trpinac created the 2014 Wraith’s chassis, and right now, the vehicle’s considered the fastest and most luxurious car Rolls-Royce has built so far. Extravagance pervades all aspects of the car, starting with the highly-detailed interior. Phantom-grade natural-grain leather, chrome bullet tips, recessed piping, and soft wool carpets elevate the four-seat spacious interior, while Rolls-Royce takes design a step further with the canadel paneling in open grain. The technicians putting together the Wraith angled the wood veneer at 55 degrees and curved it perfectly around each door. The result is a precise mirror image going through the car’s center. Customization makes a major selling point for this vehicle, and

LUXE ON THE ROAD for the interior, this extends to the 1,340 hand-sewn fiber optics in the headliner. A star-filled sky – able to be designed in a constellation pattern of your choice – results, running and controlled by the dimmer. Customization goes to the exterior, as well. Although solid color choices are available, Rolls-Royce may do a two-tone paint job in shades of your selection and further offers a choice of three exclusive wheel designs: the standard 20-inch seven spoke, the 21-inch seven spoke, and the five-spoke part polished. The appearance becomes even more dramatic and commanding with a strongly-recessed grille, twin exhausts, and frameless coach doors with stainless steel handles. Advertisements highlight the intuitive GPS and gear-changing feature, but the exterior remains unaffected. A rear deck made out of composite carbon holds the antenna, which would otherwise protrude. Outside of these innovative exterior elements, Rolls-Royce’s classic construction characterizes the Wraith. You’ll find the brand’s typical 2:1 proportions for the wheel to body height, the long rear overhang, and the self-righting wheel centers. Rolls-Royce has been quick to point out that, beyond the aesthetic elements, the Wraith is a driver’s car. Although the drive and steering are remarkably smooth and the engine nearly soundless, technological additions create a safer, more intuitive ride. Specifically, satellite-guided GPS data determines the conditions on the road ahead and then decides the best gear. As a result, the Wraith doesn’t go through unnecessary gear changes.

Technological advances enhance the inside, as well. A Wireless Car hot spot keeps passengers connected, while music or directions are just a swipe away with the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. Just slightly pinch or pull it to zoom in or out, or outline a letter or use voice controls to access contacts, record, or send notes. Rolls-Royce’s advances further go to the engine, and true to the assertions, it’s literally the most powerful in the brand’s history. A 6.6 liter, twin-turbo charged, V12 engine gives 624 bhp, with 800 Nm of torque. The driver, as a result, can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds. However, partly due to the electronicallycontrolled air suspension, driving gives the feel of a magic carpet ride. Each Wraith ultimately can be as unique as the owner wants it to be, within reason. Rolls-Royce’s configuration feature lets you be in control of the design process, allowing you to explore all stylistic possibilities. Before you purchase, the feature lets you see the car from different angles in multiple settings. Beyond Clientele Luxury’s viewing and test drive of the Wraith in Scottsdale, the vehicle has been unveiled in several locations across the globe, starting with the 2013 Geneva Motor Show earlier in 2013. Giving auto enthusiasts and luxury seekers a taste before its official debut in January 2014, the Wraith has further been seen at Harrods department store in London, the Beijing Artzone, and many more locations in the United States, Europe, and Asia. ■ | 13

World’s Finest Luxury Hotel The Saxton, Africa Experience the apex of luxury within an intimate atmosphere

at the Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas and Spa. The hotel, located in Sandton, a suburb of Johannesburg, features 20 Egoli suites, 21 villa suites, and 11 Presidential suites, as well as the Mandela Platinum Suite, a space of 3,767 square feet named after the South African president. With George Cohen as general manager, the high luxury hotel, located on six acres of landscaped gardens, remains one of the most sought-after destinations in the world for relaxation and travel, being named as one of the leading boutique hotels since 2000. Travel + Leisure listed it as Best in the World in Africa and 16th overall in the world with its Reader’s Choice Awards. Harpers & Queen, as well, named it the World’s Best Boutique Hotel. Former insurance giant Douw Steyn privately lived in the facility, but opened the hotel to the public in June 2000 with 24 suites. Steyn aimed to create an exclusive venue exceeding travelers’ expectations, and today, rooms feature large-screen televisions; VCR and DVD players with surround sound; discreet workstations with multiple telephones, fax machines, ISDN, and Wi-Fi access; mini bars with South African wines, snacks, and drinks; and an oversized bathtub, separate shower, separate toilet, and two sinks. Beyond the basic accommodations, an open plan characterizes 16 |

LUXE TRAVEL each space, equipped with a bath and dressing room. As candles create a warm aura, the décor, with a warm beige foundation, incorporates African art accents and brown lattice shutters in front of large bay windows. Guests receive a view of the garden or pool area. The Saxon’s overall interior design brings together African and contemporary influences. A timelessly styled staircase goes around a central glass dome, which allows natural light to enter and further enhance the décor. A boutique, piano lounge, smoking library, and dining room round out the modern touches. As the Saxon is known as a highly-respected patron of the arts, collections of the best African contemporary art and handicrafts make a strong drawing point for visitors. The curated selection covers established and emerging artists from Africa, Europe, and the East. An acclaimed collection amassed under a leading art curator focuses on both history and understanding of the artists’ work. Sketches, etchings, collages, mixed media, oil on canvas, wood cuts, and many more pieces from Dean Simon, Titia Ballot, Hannes Harrs, Sandile Zulu, and several other artists can be viewed in the hotel’s galleries. As of April 2013, the hotel’s former Saxon Restaurant and Terrace was rebranded as Five Hundred, a dining establishment led by celebrated executive chef David Higgs. The 40-seat restaurant opens for breakfast, high tea, dinner, and Sunday brunch. Higgs’ vision considers the full experience of food, from utilizing locally grown ingredients to the artistic aspects of food preparation, and takes

influence from both contemporary world and African cuisines. Now considered the “most exceptional dining experience in Johannesburg,” Five Hundred made changes to its six-course tasting menu in August 2013. Ruinart champagne now accompanies every course, which themselves come from the finest and freshest ingredients: an organic garden for produce and locally-sourced crayfish, foie gras, and beluga caviar, with accommodations for specific dietary requirements. A free-standing 13,000 square foot spa, expands the opportunities for relaxation, with services for the face, body, and beauty, as well as a fully supervised, up-to-date gymnasium. Throughout a guest’s stay, superior customer service enhances the luxurious experience at the Saxon Hotel. While staff members are ready to make accommodations, guests have the opportunity to request a private butler, who attends to each individual’s every need. During a vacation, this may be assisting with travel to Sandton for shopping, room service, or making dinner reservations. Guests may further request private transfers to and from the airport in luxury cars. With beautiful décor, spacious rooms, and artistic, culinary, and relaxation attractions, the Saxon Boutique Hotel presents one of the most luxurious, yet still intimate, experiences in the world. Rates begin at $981 per night (per the South African Rand to U.S. dollar exchange rate) and include breakfast and tax. ■ | 17

Treehotel, Sweden

Treehotel, Sweden

There’s more to experiencing the tranquility of nature than taking a camping trip. Treehotel, in Harads near the Lule River, aims to place travelers right in the middle of nature in a serene, luxurious environment. Should Treehotel’s accommodations appeal to you, all stays start at Britta’s Pensionat, before travelers take a brief walk through nature to their treeroom. From there, each space provides a picturesque view of the surrounding forest and river. Beyond the view, however, Treehotel strives to make as minimal of an impact as possible on the surroundings. The rooms, four to six meters above the ground and designed by leading Scandinavian architects, are sustainably constructed and effectively conserve energy. Specifically, each has an eco outdoor wood floor, warmed by under-floor heating; uses green hydro electric power; and has water efficient sinks and a combustion toilet instead of a standard sewage system. Each room offers a high standard of accommodations for relaxing and renewal, while all meals are served in a 1930s to ‘50s setting at Britta’s. | 19

Deer Valley, Utah

Deer Valley, Utah

A winter vacation to a ski resort seems unremarkable – until you experience Deer Valley’s revolutionary service. Opening in 1981 in Park City, Utah, this resort combines all the activities skiers of all levels can enjoy with five-star hotel service. From a purely activity standpoint, the resort – for skis only, not snowboarding – offers a wide range of options for enjoying the outdoors: 21 chairlifts, 100 ski runs, six bowls, 11 restaurants, three elegant lodges, and 2,026 acres for skiing, with 300 inches of snow per year. While luxury accommodations enhance each stay, activities cover all ages; if you’re looking to bring children along, consider signing them up for the Ski School and Children’s Center. Deer Valley continues to receive accolades for the experience it provides. In 2013, for instance, SKI Magazine listed it No. 1 for Guest Service, Family Programs, Dining, On-Mountain Food, Lodging, and Grooming. In warmer weather, the resort is open from June 14 through early September. Its winter season begins in December and lasts until the middle of April.

Ice Hotel, Sweden

When you think of a winter vacation, you likely associate it with escaping someplace warm – or, enjoying the slopes at a luxurious ski resort. But what about simply enjoying the natural sights? ICEHOTEL, located in Jukkasjarvi in Northern Sweden, offers just this, while providing a truly unique experience. Yearly, this hotel sees 50,000 visitors in winter from all over the world. Covering 5,500 square meters, spaces allow travelers to experience the Northern Lights, as well as the many activities 200km north of the Arctic Circle. What’s particularly unique about ICEHOTEL is the design. Essentially constructed newly each year, the structure is made out of 1,000 tons of Torne River ice and an additional 30,000 tons of a snow-ice combination for strength. 100 people, including artists who design the rooms, put the structure together in November and December. Before that, 5,000 tons of ice are harvested and stored over the summer, and once the season’s over, the hotel melts back into the river. During its December through April season, travelers get to experience some of the most beautiful, innovative rooms across the globe. Not only is the hotel’s impact on the environment minimal, but rooms often display hand-carved art, have a spacious feel, or give a great view of the Northern Lights at night. ■ 20 |

Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig

Marchesa There’s a Certain Timelessness

24 |

hile Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, both former models, met at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London in the 1990s, their line Marchesa wasn’t established until 2004. Prior to starting the luxury couture line, Chapman graduated from the Wimbledon School of Art in 2001 and began her fashion career as a costume designer. Craig graduated from Brighton Art College, with a concentration on print and embroidery design. Their combined skills, complementing each other, came together to design elegant, detailed dresses inspired by Milanese marchesa Luisa Casati. Marchesa started receiving attention after actress Renée Zellweger wore one of their designs. Since that point, several A-list stars of all ages – from the latest teen pop sensations to established actresses like Penelope Cruz, Halle Berry, Eva Longoria, and Sandra Bullock – have worn Marchesa’s styles to award ceremonies and other major events. There’s a certain timelessness put into each dress. Even the latest trends showcased in their FW13 collection, from sheer materials to peplums, appear elegant, rather than a style of the moment. As the brand continues to garner attention, its next area of expansion looks to be fragrances. ■ | 25

LUXE FASHION So, if you’re looking to be fashion-forward, how do you wear the men’s clutch? As a starting point, consider an Italian leather piece in a dark shade – ideally, brown or black – with few details and minimal hardware. No matter if you select a zipper, envelope, or wristlet style, the clutch must communicate “business” while being versatile enough for casual uses.

Men’s Fashion-Forward Prints, Colors, and Bags

Giorgio Armani Monkstrap Loafers with Croc Print Detailing Menswear brands have experimented with color-blocking over the past few seasons, and eggplant, in this regards, fits right in. As a sort of statement piece, consider a high-quality knit, such as the Brunello Cucinelli Tipped V-Neck Sweater, or a tailored blazer, such as one from Paul Smith’s wool suit collection, and pair it with other neutral or cool-colored pieces.

With Gucci introducing all-over floral suits for men and Dolce & Gabbana a few eye-popping blazers, you might as well revel in the trend by staying away from the demure and gravitating toward a print that commands attention.

ne of America’s 10 largest homes sits majestic and tranquil in the mountains of mildweather Alabama. The crown jewel of the 27-acre estate is the 50,000 + square-foot mansion. It is the realization of the owners’ dream and was inspired by historic French and Italian castles of Europe. It was architecturally designed with the grand scope and symmetry of Versailles, but with many of the internal walls removed to create breathetaking, light-filled spaces arranged for extravagant entertaining and inspired, aesthetic daily living and contemplation. It took 4 years to complete construction with artisans and artists from Europe taking residence to handcraft the stucco, marble, limestone and decorative features. The hand-painted dome of the grand foyer was the work of an English artist. The chariot race depicted in the library was hand painted by Italian artist Scagliola. The exquisite decorative filigree found throughout the home was created by IFAC (known for their restorative work on Buckingham Palace and in many palaces

belonging to monarchs around the world). The attention to detail and the quality of the mansion will not disappoint. All doors and windows are mahogany. All fixtures and hardware throughout the home are Cheryl Wagner. The custom rugs were made by Lacey Champion. All custom draperies, light fixtures, and rugs will remain with the home. Hancock Park

PRICE: $10,600,000 LOCATION: 455 Lorraine Blvd, Hancock Park, California SQUARE FEET: 9,329 BEDROOMS: 6 Hilton & Hyland | The Altman Brothers Josh and Matthew Altman

38 |

455 Lorraine Boulevard has long been considered a Los Angeles landmark. Known as Los Tiempos or the Dorothy Chandler Estate, the property just went on the market, listed by wellknown real estate team The Altman Brothers. Over the years, the property’s been known for its residents, architecture, guests, events, and location, with the most prominent being Dorothy Chandler. While Chandler’s known these days for music hall the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, she was a lifelong resident of Lorraine Blvd. Chandler’s philanthropic efforts, including saving the Hollywood Bowl in 1950, garnered her a great amount of attention. In 1964, Times described her work as “perhaps the most impressive display of virtuoso money-raising and civic citizenship in the history of U.S. womanhood.”

While the landmark estate exemplifies classic American Beaux Arts architecture, an academic neoclassical-influenced style seen from 1880 to 1920, the estate itself features an elaborate music room and nearly an acre of grounds. It’s said that Chandler organized her philanthropic efforts here, and as a result, the property was registered as a Historic Cultural Monument in 2004. The estate is prominently featured in Windsor Square, a residential development that expanded since its beginning in 1911. At the time, George A.J. Howard aimed to create a beautiful tranquil park setting for upscale family homes. The area’s expensive deed minimum — at the time, $12,550 per home – resulted in well-known architects, such as Paul Williams and A.C. Martin, developing homes for the area just east of Hancock Park. Los Angeles elite have owned property in Windsor Square, including oil magnate John Paul Getty, whose Irving Blvd property is now the mayor’s residence.

The City of Los Angeles designated the area Historic Preservation Overlay Zone on September 29, 2004. Since then, the Dorothy Chandler Estate went through a significant five-year renovation by the current owners. Upgrades include a Creston control system, new plumbing system (with soft water system and filter), new drainage, new sewer line, updated electrical system, new roofs and copper gutters, handmade, carved custom cabinetry, 400-year old French limestone floors in the kitchen, security cameras, a new alarm system, new swimming pool with Ozone system, new landscaping, new irrigation system, outdoor lighting, and countless other major improvements. Offered at: $10,600,000. Contact The Altman Brothers at 323.791.9398 for more information on this property. ■ | 39

Once in a long while you come upon a modern property so unique that it literally takes your breath away. “West Wind, the magnificent residence created by New York architect Toshiko Mori, former architecture department chair at Harvard University, is situated on two acres of prime land on north Casey Key, an eight-mile island with fewer than 400 single family homes, a hidden gem just south of Sarasota. The modern glass dwelling, built by master builder Michael K. Walker and Associates, is an impressive rectangular structure elevated on concrete-driven pilings to capture water views of both the Gulf of Mexico and Little Sarasota Bay. The dramatic entry staircase at the ground level is located beneath a central atrium, with a partial glass floor above to bring natural light from

TOP PROPERTIES the large skylight covering the atrium. Illustrious architect James Carpenter designed a dichroic glass prism, which diffuses daylight from clerestory windows into a rainbow spectrum of colors that shift with the viewing angle to reflect subtle nuances in the center of the house during daylight. The ambience is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring. An historic two-bedroom guest house was remodeled and historically served as barracks for the U.S. Coast Guard. As you meander through the winding paths of the botanical gardens, with some 60-plus varieties of palms, native plants, and fruit trees, you approach the secluded pool and pavilion with a large covered patio, and the boardwalk to the expansive dock and Little Sarasota Bay beyond. The third structure, a

pool pavilion, contains its own living area and is perfect for extended stay of guests or family. Truly a work of art in architecture not to be missed by the most discerning of modern enthusiasts, West Wind offers something quite extraordinary. Casey Key is located between the historic walking town of Venice with its European-feel of boutiques and restaurants, and downtown Sarasota, where cultural amenities offer world class symphony, opera, numerous theatres, St. Armands Circle for shopping, the Ringling Museum, Mote Aquarium, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and more. Frank Konigseder

Liberty Coach Leading the Luxury Coach Industry

hen one associates an image of traveling on the road in luxury, Liberty Coach is practically inescapable. The family-owned company, founded in 1968 and incorporated in 1972, has sought out high-quality motor coach construction since inception and has since turned into an industry innovator in regards to style, interior design, and technology. Frank X. Konigseder, the company’s Vice President, began as a mechanical engineer. “I basically got into the sales position and engineering position because of being a family-owned business,” he told us. “You pretty much do what’s needed to be done.” Parents Frank and Jeanne Konigseder started the company. What makes a Liberty Coach so unique? Quality and elegance pervade the inside and outside, from reliable operation to the selected interior fabrics, custom cabinetry, and technology and remote-control systems for dimming the lights to raising and lowering the blinds. New motor homes fetch from $1.95 million to $2.2 million, while used ones go from $350,000 to $1.6 million. These days, Liberty Coach designs begin with a Prevost bus shell, and the company builds everything else. Interiors of tiled bathrooms and Tempur-Pedic mattresses have been compared to five-star hotel rooms, but the company’s first project was, in fact, a Greyhound bus with 2.5 million miles on it. 60 |

“The designs for the interiors are created by my brother Kurt Konigseder and the interior appointment for design is done by his wife, Kim,” Konigseder said. “We started utilizing the Prevost shell in 1978, and have been exclusive with Prevost since that time. Prior to that, we were using used Greyhound bus chassis.” Konigseder opened the company’s sales and service facility in Stuart, Fla., in 2001. The location’s particularly ideal for customers east of the Mississippi River who travel through the Southeast. As well, after partnering with coach makers for decades, Liberty Coach opened its own plant in North Chicago. “I opened up our dealership here in Stuart, Florida in October 2001, and we have been very, very successful coming through a very, very difficult economy, to say the least, from 2008 to 2010,” he explained. “That’s something that I and my family are very proud of.” For the 2013 line of motor coaches, the company partnered with Dean Loucks, who created a range of custom paint jobs. “The partnership with Dean Loucks came about many years ago,” he began. “It was about 20-plus years ago, and he and I got together, and he has done specialty projects during those years: If we needed a large mural done on the side of the coach, or needed a complete coach painted for a specific purpose, such as a coach that we built for a wine company by the name of Brassfield in California – that was a complete wine vineyard that was painted on the side of the coach.” Talking about their more recent partnership, he went onto add: “And, for 2011, actually, we got together, and I was looking for Liberty Coach to step out of the box, if you will, from the normal Prevost paint schemes, since Prevost had been painting the coaches utilizing their designs and the designs that we had also come up with in 1978,” he said. “And, everything was looking the same. No matter who was the coach converter, our competition, ourselves, whatever, it all looked the same coming down the road. So I wanted to step out of that box and do something completely different. And then Dean and I, again in 2011, decided that we could put something together exclusively, and at the current production rate that we are at, which is between 14 to 16 units a year, he can paint all of those for us, and each one of them different and have their own theme to them.” Each features a beautiful, unique exterior design that varies from coach to coach. Konigseder has several plans for Liberty Coach’s future. “We believe that the marketplace is going to come back in some fashion in the next few years, so we intend on increasing our production to accommodate that,” he stated. We are always trying to step outside of that box and make something more interesting and desirable for our current customer base and people we desire to attract.” ■

Thomas D. Mangelson

World’s Top Nature Photographer

homas D. Mangelson, known as one of the world’s top nature photographers, attributes his success and love of nature to his father, Harold Mangelson. As a child, he accompanied his father to watch migrating flocks of ducks, geese, and cranes at Platte River in Nebraska, learning in the process the key qualities for nature photography: patience, waiting for the right moment, and understanding how animals behave. While Mangelson started studying business at the University of Nebraska, he later transferred to Doane College, where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Biology. His interests and educational background led to post-graduate studies in zoology and wildlife biology at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. Mangelson’s big career break came in 1974, when he worked as a cinematographer and had the chance to shoot whooping cranes for National Geographic. His footage resulted in the Emmy-nominated television program Flight of the Whooping Crane. This wouldn’t be his last time filming the species. Mangelson later went to produce and photograph the lifecycle of the sandhill crane for the PBS Nature and BBC Natural World film Cranes of the Grey Wind. Throughout his lengthy career, Mangelson’s photography has been showcased in magazines, on television, in museums, and in books, including National Geographic, Life, Audubon, National Wildlife, Smithsonian, Natural History, Newsweek, Wildlife Art, American Photo, The Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN’s World News, and ABC’s World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Vital Signs: Images of Biodiversity, opened at the San Diego Natural History Museum in 1997 and since shown at other U.S. and Canadian locations, included his work. Mangelson’s photographs have further been seen at the Natural History Museum in London, the Joslyn

Art Museum in Omaha, and the Natural Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. As well, his work was featured in the following books: Images of Nature: The Photographs of Thomas D. Mangelsen, written by noted biologist Charles Craighead; Polar Dance: Born of the North Wind, written by Fred Bruemmer, Spirit of the Rockies: The Mountain Lions of Jackson Hole, by author Cara Shea Blessley; and The Natural World, with a foreword by Dr. Jane Goodall. Outside of photography, Mangelson co-founded the Cougar Fund, is on the international advisory council for the Jane Goodall Institute, is a board ambassador for the Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance, and helped establish the Fellow of The International League of Conservation Photographers. ■ | 63

Extraordinary People 2014

Geoffrey JW Kent Abercrombie & Kent

nspiration for Abercrombie & Kent dates back to Geoffrey JW Kent’s childhood in Africa. Now the company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Kent was born while his parents were on safari in Northern Rhodesia (now present-day Zambia) and spent his early years on their farm in Kenya’s Aberdare Highlands and at the Duke of York School in Nairobi. His catalyst for exploration began with a journey at 16, in which he went on a two-month trek alone from Nairobi to Cape Town, South Africa by motorbike – a 5,000-mile distance. Time in the service after attending the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst compounded this early influence; Kent served in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Malta, though hearing damage truncated his distinguished military career. Once returning to Kenya, Kent and his parents founded the

64 |

company as a luxury safari outfitter. After they retired, Kent then worked to turn Abercrombie & Kent into the international brand it has since become. Part of that involved partnering with Jorie Ford Butler, of Oak Brook, Ill, to expand. With Kent as the current Chairman and CEO and Jorie Butler Kent as the Vice Chairman, both continue to seek out global travel destinations to surprise, impress, and thrill clients. Abercrombie & Kent’s ultimate mission has been making the most faraway places across the globe seem accessible. Known as the first travel company to bring comforts and amenities to even the most remote destinations, Abercrombie & Kent now offers hundreds of small group escorted journeys and tailor-made independent travel excursions to more than 100 countries on seven continents. Outside of Africa, the company takes travelers to Australia, the South Pacific, China and East Asia, India, Europe, Egypt and the Middle East, South and Central America, the western United States and Canada, and even Antarctica. Attentiveness goes into every step of Abercrombie & Kent’s journeys, from the initial consultation through transportation, accommodations, and even the trip back home. Over the years, many A-list and well-known celebrities have travelled with Abercrombie & Kent, including James Brolin, Kristin Davis, Bill Gates, John Grisham, Tom Hanks, Dr. Henry Kissinger, Goldie Hawn, Lauren Hutton, Sharon Lawrence, Liam Neeson, Rachael Ray, Diane Sawyer, Jane Seymour, Barbara Walters, Denzel Washington, and Oprah Winfrey. Outside of his company, Kent previously served as chairman of the World Travel & Tourism Council, a global forum for the world’s business leaders, which includes Chairs and Chief Executives from 100 prominent travel and tourism companies. For Abercrombie & Kent’s 50th anniversary in 2012, Kent was inducted into the British Travel and Hospitality Industry Hall of Fame. In addition to building one of the world’s top luxury travel companies, Kent is a successful polo player. He was the captain of the Abercrombie & Kent U.S. team for more than 20 years and twice won the U.S. Open, U.S. Gold Cup, and the World Cup. Previously, he served as captain and patron of the Windsor Park Polo Team. Both Kent and Butler Kent have a passion for wildlife preservation, and in 1982, they founded Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to protecting the ecosystem and wildlife while supporting indigenous communities. Guests of Abercrombie & Kent, through the philanthropic organization, have a chance to give back to the places they visit. ■

Kofi Natei Nartey

TV Host, Luxury Homes Specialist and Director of the Sports and Entertainment Division for The Agency in Beverly Hills

hese days, Kofi Natei Nartey is known for his presence on HGTV’s “Selling LA!” but outside of reality television, he successfully combines his real-estate knowledge and entertainment- industry experience as the Luxury Homes Specialist and Director of the Sports and Entertainment Division for The Agency in Beverly Hills. To Trulia, Nartey admitted he has always liked architecture and working with people, so a career in real estate made sense to pursue, and he has remained in the industry for 10 years. Specializing in luxury real estate, he has sold his clients’ homes for tens of millions in the Southern California market. Before getting to this point in his career, Nartey attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he also played football. Later, he went on to earn an MBA in the Presidential and Key Executive Program at Pepperdine University. Since deciding to pursue real estate, he served as Director of Luxury Properties at his previous firm and has strived to elevate the standards for real- estate professionals. In doing so, Nartey has become something along the lines of a professional business consultant and motivational speaker, rather than simply being an agent. His negotiation, marketing, and sales abilities have grabbed attention, and he has gone onto train hundreds of realestate professionals and be a guest speaker at several local and national real- estate conferences. While Nartey has clearly gotten to a top spot in the real- estate industry, his career in entertainment is also notable. Along with

playing sports professionally, he has appeared in several national commercials, television shows, and films. You might have caught him in True Blood, Modern Family, Touch, Psych, Fast and Furious 4, and Kick-Ass. The combined experience resulted in a greater understanding of the entertainment world. Not only has Nartey built several contacts among athletes, actors, and other celebrities, he’s sold properties to prominent stars, including Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Laz Alonso of Avatar and Deception, actress Neve Campbell, former Miss USA and current Real Housewife Kenya Moore, and Matt Flynn of the Oakland Raiders, among others. Although the stars themselves like getting featured on Selling LA!, where Nartey is a regularly featured agent, he understands the specific needs of celebrities. In an interview with Black Enterprise, he described this as extending from specific features like screening rooms for film professionals to heightened privacy, working with a celebrity’s full team of managers, agents, and assistants, and flexibility. “My clients appreciate my command of the real- estate industry, and my ability to bring a level of calm to what can be a highly emotional transaction. Also, I am extremely responsive to my clients’ needs,” he explained during his interview. Outside of television and entertainment, Nartey maintains a media presence. So far, this has included contributing to the Los Angeles Times’ “Hot Properties” video blog and being featured in the Wall Street Journal, Fox Business News, Trulia, and Zillow. Right now, his mantra of “Focus and Finish” has kept his realestate career in Southern California’s luxury market flourishing. Clients’ needs remain a strong focus, as does building and inspiring a strong team of agents to become a top sports and entertainment broker. ■ | 65

Dramatic spaces illuminated by skylights and walls of glass evoke the height of International Style, while a simple, dark material palette of raw steel, hardwood and crisp white walls provides a unified backdrop in this stunning remodel of an existing house in the Capitol Hill neighborhood by renowned architect, Tom Kundig. Bringing light into the home and creating a stronger connection to the outdoors were important aspects of the renovation, and in addition to extensive skylights, the rear of the house was transformed with the addition of a 10’x10’ custom designed jalousie window, and large sliding and pivoting windows and doors which afford a living experience that is at once clean and modern, yet organic and sculptural. A custom designed “kuruma” functions as a rolling office that reflects a modern interpretation of a traditional wheeled storage chest. The lower level features a complete MIL unit that has a private entrance and is ideal for use as a self-contained home office, staff or guest lodging or as an autonomous rental, making this exceptional work of residential art a highly practical and adaptable choice for modern in-city living.

The Studio House stands as architect Tom Kundig’s breakthrough project – one that brought him in contact with a client and patron who shares and supports his vision of purity in the interplay of light with massing, and who was excited to experiment with raw materials in creating an interactive dwelling that was “rooted in the past, yet predictive of the future.” To this end, intentionally rustic and proven materials, such as uncoated structural steel and site-formed concrete are celebrated for the strength and connection to the elemental that they provide. In contrast, the spaces are carefully edited, adhering to the disciplined, modernist line that has come to define Kundig’s work. Moira Holley and Scott Wasner are honored to represent this architectural masterpiece.
